  • Fatigue crack propagation tests for the brake disc cast iron were conducted for investigating fatigue crack propagation rate(da/dN), crack propagation path and fracture toughness($K_c$) of the material. The threshold stress intensity factor range, ${\Delta}K_{th}$, was found to be about $6MPa{\sqrt{m}}$ at the stress ratio of R = 0.1. Also, fracture toughness value was determined to be $24.7MPa{\sqrt{m}}$. Irregular fatigue fracture surfaces were observed, indicating that fatigue crack growth occurred at the interface between randomly scattered flak graphite and ferrite, where the interfacial strength was relatively weak.

  • In order to study the infuence of Sb addition on the compacted vermicular graphite cast iron(C/V) and gray cast iron(GC), these specimen which had different Sb content(0-0, 1wt.%) were prepared. these specimen were tested for microstructure and mechanical properties. The result from this study are as follows. For C/V and GC, the microstructure of graphite appeared to be finer with increasing Sb content more than 0.06wt.% Ferrite disappeared from the matrix with addition of Sb more than 0.06wt.% in GC and more than 0.08wt.% in C/V. The size of the eutectic cell in GC was 4.5 to 7 times larger than that in C/V, but the decreasing tendancy of its size was more remarkable in GC than in C/V with increasing Sb content. The abrasion speed corresponding to the maximum amount of abrasion in the nabrasion test was found to be 1.37m/sec. GC sample weared 3.6 to 21 times faster than those of C/V did. the amount of abrasion demeased remarkably with Sb addition, and the abrasion rate was constant with Sb content over 0.04wt.%

  • Surface rolling is one of the micro plastic processes which yields local deformation of surface, and improves surface roughness, hardness and fatigue strength. With the use of gray cast iron (GC 30) as material for experiment, the changes in surface roughness were investigated. A number of previous theses were refered to the effects of surface rolling for this study. With the use of steel ball of excellent in surface roughness and hardness, and with the applied force 20Kgf, surface rolling was performed. The summary of the experiment is as follows: (1) With the fixed applied force 20Kgf and the ball of 8.726mm in diameter, surface roughness was found to be the most excellent. (2) Increase in hardness was most prominent in the first rolling, but less effective in the succeeding rolling. (3) Reduction on diameter was affected by the previous process before rolling, and about 70 to 90% of reduction was made in the first rolling.

  • Cracks on the cylinder block of diesel engines will often happen due to cyclic load and thermal stress. According to the Classification Societies' rules welding reparis of cylinder block made of cast irons are generally not permitted. However such welding repairs became inevitable taking enormous cost and time for their renewal into consideration. In this study repair welding methods for the clinder blocks made of gray cast irons were reviewed and the tests of their welds were carried out in order to purpose the repair welding meth-ods of packing seat and o-ring seat of cylinder block and apply them to the practice. The following conclusions are botained :1 The tensile strength of weld of cast iron more than that of base metal can be obtained by means of preheating keeping temperature above $100^{\circ}C$ between welding pass-es preventing slag inclusion peening and cramping weld metal by studs. 2. The suspected crack by a magnetic particle test due to different magnetic permeability can be identified which are not associated with a mechanical discotinuity.

  • In this study, the variation of surface roughness was tested in surface grinding for the three working materials SM45C, heat-treated SM45C, and gray cat iron. IT was performed for the various grinding wheels with two grain size #60, #100, and three grade I, O, R and various grinding depths and feeds, The fractural grinding depths which were obtained when the grinding wheels were destructed in surface grinding works, were examined and compared with the calculated value sug-gested in this study, The results showed that the surface roughness was decreased by decreasing grinding depth, and feed, and increasing grain size and grades. The fracture grinding depths were increased by increasing grain size, grade and feed.

  • Solidification simulation of gray cast iron sheave product was conducted with the consideration of graphite precipitation during solidification, and of casting processes such as post-inoculation method, treatment and rate, the result of which was aimed to be adopted in the field. In risering design(I), shrinkage cavities were predicted to occur in the part below the risers and center part of the product. While the former defect was considered to be due to the solidification behaviour of riser neck, the latter was due to the feeding channel. In design(II), the length of the riser neck was reduced and one top open riser was attached in the center of the product to prevent the formation of shrinkage cavities, whereby defect-free product was produced.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the difference in cutting characteristics of cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools in the similar application range via turning test of various conditions. The cermet and carbide tools in the range of ISO P10 grade were developed using optimum compositions with a view to obtaining a high toughness and hardness by PM process. First mechanical properties were characterized on these tools. Experimental results of wear behaviour and resistance to fracturing were presented and discussed in the turning of gray cast iron and alloy steels by cermet, carbide and coated carbide tools. The coated carbide tool shows similar cutting performance compared to the cermet, while the cermet has better combination of wear resistance and toughness of high speed (V=500m/min) cutting in comparison with carbide and coated carbide tools, and also shows a potentiality for cast iron cutting. Fe adhesive behaviour on the tools and surface roughness of workpieces were explained by chemical affinity between tools and workpieces.

  • The advantages of Thermal sprayed coatings as a replacement for cast iron liners are reduced weight, better heat transfer and reduced cost. One of the most important performance attributes of a cylinder bore coating is its wear resistance, since it must survive the abrasive sliding of both the piston rings and the piston skirt. In this study, composite powders were prepared by ball milling of Al-13Si-3Mg(wt%) alloy with SiC particles. The concentrations of SiC were 40 and 60wt%. The composite powders were sprayed using Metco-9MB plasma torch. Plasma sprayed coatings were heat-treated at 500℃ for 3 hours. The wear resistances of the plasma sprayed coatings were found to improve with heat treatment and superior to the commercially available G.C.I.(gray cast iron). AlSiMg-40SiC heat-treated coatings showed the best wear resistance in this study.

  • In this study, to improve the interfacial bond strength of cast iron-aluminum dissimilar materials, graphite was removed to a certain depth from the cast iron surface through de-graphitization heat treatment. As the heat treatment time increased, the depth at which graphite was removed increased, showing a linear relationship between the heat treatment time and depth. Aluminum was filled to a certain depth on the de-graphitized cast iron surface through die-casting method, and no intermetallic compounds were formed on the cast iron-aluminum interface. The interfacial bonding strength showed a value of 90 MPa regardless of the heat treatment time, which is very high compared to the 12MPa bonding strength of the material without de-graphitization heat treatment. This result is thought to be due to the mechanical bonding of the undercut structure as the liquid aluminum, penetrated by the high pressure die-casting process, solidified in the de-graphitized region of the cast iron.
