CO2레이저 표면경화(表面硬化) 처리된 회주철(灰鑄鐵)의 피로특성(疲勞特性)에 관한 연구(硏究) (Study on the Fatigue Resistance of Gray Cast Iron in CO2 Laser Surface Hardening)

  • This study has been performed to investigate some effects of the power density and traverse speed of laser beam on the optical microstructure, hardness and fatigue resistance of gray cast iron treated by laser surface hardening technique. Optical micrograph has shown that the dissolution of graphite flakes and the coarsening of lath martensite tend to increase with a small amount of retained austenite as the power density increases under the condition of a given traverse speed. Hardness measurements have revealed that as the power density increases, hardness values of outermost surface layer increases from Hv=620 to Hv=647 in case of traverse speed of 2.0m/min at gray cast iron. Fatigue test has exhibited that the fatigue strength of laser surface hardened specimen is superier compared to that of untreated specimen, showing that values for the fatigue strength at $N_f=10^7$ of gray cast iron laser-surface-hardened at a low power density of $4076w/cm^2$ and a high power density of $8153w/cm^2$ under the condition of a given traverse speed of 2.0m/min are $15kg_f/mm^2$ and $20kg_f/mm^2$, respectively, whereas the fatigue strength of untreated specimen is $11kg_f/mm^2$. Under high stress-low cycle condition a noraml brittleness fracture appears, whereas a ductile fracture with beach mark is observed in the specimen tested under low stress-high cycle condition.

회주철의 진동감쇠능과 기계적 성질에 미치는 오스템퍼링처리의 영향 (Effect of Austempering Treatment on Damping Capacity and Mechanical Properties in Gray Cast Iron)

  • Gray cast iron with a high damping capacity has been used for controlling the vibration and noise in various mechanical structures. Nevertheless, its usage has been often restricted due to its poor tensile strength. Therefore, it is necessary to improve tensile strength at the expense of a loss in damping capacity. This study is aimed at finding the best combination of tensile strength and damping capacity by varying austempering time and temperature range from $320^{\circ}C$ to $380^{\circ}C$ after austenization at $900^{\circ}C$ for 1hr. The effect of austempering condition on hardness and the volume fraction of retained austenite is investigated as well. The results obtained are summarized as follows : (1) With an increase in austempering temperature, both tensile strength and hardness decrease while damping capacity improves. (2) Austempering at $350^{\circ}C$, resulting in a mixture of upper and lower bainite with partially retained austenite, exhibits the optimum combination of tensile strength and damping capacity.

GC150 회주철의 수축결함생성에 미치는 주조 및 설계공정인자들의 영향 (Effects of Processing and Designing Variables on Formation of Shrinkage Cavities in GC150 Gray Cast Iron)

  • The effect of processing and designing variables such as pouring temperature(1400 or $1500^{\circ}C$), inoculation and risering design(T and H type) on the formation of defects such as external depression, primary and secondary shrinkage cavities in GC150 gray cast iron was investigated. In T type risering design, external depression or primary shrinkage cavity due to liquid contraction was formed in all of the eight cases. Regardless of its modulus value, the riser could not function properly in T type risering design because directional solidification was not promoted toward the riser. On the other hand, the four cases of H type risering design in which thermal sleeves were set onto the risers produced defect-free castings. In both types of the risering designs, secondary shrinkage cavity caused by solidification contraction was not observed in the casting because of the expansion pressure due to graphite precipitation and the application of rigid pep-set mold. The degree of external depression or primary shrinkage cavity was reduced with lowered pouring temperature. The effect of inoculation was diminished because of the high carbon equivalent of GC 150 gray cast iron.

마찰재에 함유된 금속섬유와 마찰 특성의 연관관계 (The Effect of Metal Fibers on the Tribology of Automotive Friction Materials)

  • Friction and wear properties of brake friction materials containing different metal fibers (Al, Cu or Steel fibers) were investigated. Based on a simple experimental formulation, friction materials with the same amount of metal fibers were tested using a pad-on-disk type friction tester. Two different materials (gray cast iron and aluminum metal matrix composite (MMC)) were used for disks rubbing against the friction materials. Results front ambient temperature tests revealed that the friction material containing Cu fibers sliding against gray cast iron disk showed a distinct negative $\mu$-v (friction coefficient vs. sliding velocity) relation implying possible stick-slip generation at low speeds. The negative $\mu$- v relation was not observed when the Cu-containing friction materials were rubbed against the Al-MMC counter surface. Elevated temperature tests showed that the friction level and the intensity of friction force oscillation were strongly affected by the thermal conductivity and melting temperature of metallic ingredients of the friction couple. Friction materials slid against cast iron disks exhibited higher friction coefficients than Al-MMC (metal matrix composite) disks during high temperature tests. On the other hand, high temperature test results suggested that copper fibers in the friction material improved fade resistance and that steel fibers were not compatible with Al-MMC disks showing severe material transfer and erratic friction behavior during sliding at elevated temperatures.

  • Ductile cast iron has a good ductility and toughness than those of gray cast iron, because the shape of graphite is spheroidal. Also, it has been reported that, additional strengthening and toughening of the ductile cast iron can be obtainded from the proper combination of matrix structures by the heat treatment and addition of alloying elements. In this study the effect of special heat treatment and addition of alloying elements(Ni, Mo) on the multi-phase(ferrite-bainite-martensite) structures, strength and toughness of ductile cast iron were studied systematically. In water quenching from $770^{\circ}C$, the martensite volume(%) increased, but the ferrite volume(%) decreased with increment of Ni content. In as cast, pearlite volume(%) and hardness increased with increment of Mo and Ni contents. And with the increment of the destabilization austempering holding time, the bainite volume(%) increased but the martensite volume(%) decreased. As destabilization austempering holding time is same, bainite volume(%) decreased, martensite increased with the increment of Ni and Mo contents. The hardness and tensile strength decreased, but impact energy increased with the decrease of Ni and Mo contents, and increment of holding time of destabilization austempering treatment.

회주철의 미세구조와 인장거동 분석 및 확률론적 피로수명평가 (Microstructure, Tensile Strength and Probabilistic Fatigue Life Evaluation of Gray Cast Iron)

  • 보통회주철(GC300)에 Cr, Mo, Cu 첨가제를 넣어 고급 회주철(HCI350)을 제작하고, 미세 조직과 기계적 물성치, 피로강도의 변화를 연구하였다. 주철을 환봉형과 평판형 주물로 제작하였으며, 이들을 절단 및 연마하여 나이탈 수용액으로 에칭한 후 미세조직의 면적비율을 측정하였다. 첨가물에 의해 편상 흑연결정(flake graphite)의 크기가 감소하고 고밀 펄라이트 함량이 증가하여 인장강도, 피로강도의 향상이 확인되었다. 피로시험 결과 획득한 피로수명 데이터를 바탕으로 최우추정법이 적용된 2모수 와이블 분포를 이용하여 확률-응력-수명 곡선을 산출하였다. 확률-응력-수명곡선 산출 결과 HCI350은 GC300에 비해 피로강도는 크게 개선되었고 수명데이터의 분산성은 낮아졌으나, 피로응력완화에 따른 피로수명의 증가가 크게 나타났다. 산출된 확률-응력-수명 곡선을 이용하여 요구수명 사이클 수에 대한 허용응력 값을 정량적으로 제시함으로써 신뢰성 수명설계에 위한 기초자료를 제시하였다.

대기 플라즈마 용사 공정에 의해 제조된 철계합금-몰리브덴 혼합 코팅층의 미세조직 및 내마모성 (Correlation of Microstructure and Tribological Properties of Mo Blended Fe-Base Coatings Fabricated by Atmospheric Plasma Spraying)

  • Atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) is world-widely used process in the automotive industry as a method to provide wear resistance coatings for engine cylinder bore, using various materials. The weight of engine blocks can be considerably decreased by removing cast iron liners, which can finally result in the improvement of fuel efficiency. In this study, five kinds of powder materials, 1.2C steel powder and 1.2C steel powder mixed with 5, 10, 15, 20 wt.%. molybdenum powder, were deposited by atmospheric plasma spraying in order to investigate the effect of molybdenum on the wear resistance of coatings. Microstructural analysis showed that molybdenum splats were well distributed in 1.2C steel matrix with intimate bonding. The molybdenum added coatings showed better tribological properties than 1.2C steel coating. However, above the 15 wt.%. blending fraction, wear resistance was somewhat degraded with poor roughness of worn surface due to the brittle fracture occurred in molybdenum splats. Consequently, compared to conventional liner material, gray cast iron, 10 wt. pct. molybdenum blended 1.2C steel coating showed much better tribological properties and therefore it looks very feasible to replace gray cast iron liner.

오스템퍼 회주철의 파괴강도 특성에 관한 연구 (A Study on Characteristics of Strength and Fracture of Austempered Graphite Cast Iron)

  • The mechanical properties and fatigue crack growth rate fracture toughness of permanent mould cast austempered gray cast iron(AGI) were compared to those of sand cast AGI. Specimens prepared for tensile, impact and fatigue test were austenitized at $900^{\circ}C$ and austempered at $270^{\circ}C$, $320^{\circ}C$, $370^{\circ}C$ and $420^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The strength, impact and fatigue crack propagation behavior of permanent mold cast AGI were found to be superior to those of sand cast AGI. Maximum values in tensile strength, BHN, Charpy impact energy, were obtained at the austempering temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. Samely, the slowest fatigue crack growth rate was appeared at the austempering temperature of $270^{\circ}C$. But ductility of AGI was not improved by permanent mould casting.

법주사 철확의 부식상태 및 미세조직 분석을 통한 제작기법 연구 (A Study of Manufacturing Techniques Extracting from the Analysis of Corrosion Status and Microstructure for the Cast-Iron Pot in Bubjusa)

  • 법주사 철확의 부식상태 및 미세조직 분석을 통해 제작기법을 추정하고자 광학현미경, SEM-EDS, 미소경도계, XRD를 이용하여 자연과학적 연구를 실시하였다. 표면층의 미세조직에서는 페라이트와 일부 펄라이트 조직이 관찰되었다. 내부층에서는 펄라이트 조직과 깃털모양의 흑연이 관찰되었으며, 중간 경계층에서는 심한 부식현상이 관찰된다. 미소경도는 조직별로 217Hv~698Hv 값의 범위를 가졌으며, 이는 일반적으로 고대 철제유물에서 보이는 경도 값 범위이다. 각 층별 미세조직에 대한 성분분석 결과, 표면층이 내부층에 비해 탈탄이 많이 되었음을 알 수 있었다. 금속 부식화합물의 XRD 동정 결과, 일반적인 금속유물의 부식과정에서 만들어지는 침철석과 적철석이 동정되었다. 결론적으로 법주사의 대형 철확은 주조기술로 제작되었으며, 내부는 흑연을 포함한 회주철 조직을 보이고 있다. 또한 표면층은 사용과정에서 가열과 냉각의 반복으로 탈탄작용이 일어났다. 이러한 연구결과는 대형 철확의 제작기법을 밝히는데 중요한 비교자료로 활용될 수 있을 것이다.

고양 벽제 제철 유구 출토 철기의 분석을 통한 제철방법 연구 (A Study on Iron-manufacture Method through Analysis of Ironware excavated from Byeokje, Goyang)

  • 철기 생산 기술은 당시 사회 발전을 가늠하는 척도로서 과거의 제철 방법을 이해하기 위한 철기 유물의 미세조직과 개재물에 대한 다양한 연구가 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 고려시대로 추정되는 고양 벽제 제철 유구에서 일괄로 수습된 철제 유물의 시편을 채취하여 광학현미경과 미세경도시험기, SEM-EDS를 이용하여 미세 조직의 성분분석을 통해 제철과 제련 기술을 추론하여 보았다. 연구결과 철괴는 주철괴와 탄소강 철괴로 분류되었다. 주철괴의 경우 백주철 조직과 인(P)의 함량이 높은 회주철 조직으로 분류되었으며 회주철 내 높은 P의 함량은 석회질 등의 융제가 첨가되며 혼입된 것으로 판단된다. 따라서 주철 조직의 철괴 및 고탄소강 철괴는 제련공정을 거치지 않은 선철들로 추정된다. 또한 철기 제작에는 크게 두가지 방법이 사용된 것으로 판단된다. 첫번째는 주물에 주철을 부어 제작하는 주철괴 제작 방법이며, 두번째는 선철의 제련 공정을 통하여 생산되는 탄소강을 제작하는 방법이다. 특히 탄소강의 고른 강 조직과 적은 양의 MnS 개재물은 현대 제철 조직과 매우 유사한 특징을 지니나 고양 벽제 제철유구에서 수습된 탄소강 내 Mn의 함유에 대하여 판단하기에는 좀 더 많은 연구가 이루어져야 할 것이며, 주철의 제강공정을 통한 고탄소강의 생산 가능성도 염두에 두어야 할 것으로 사료된다.
