In recent years, the crack accidents of earth and rockfill dams occur frequently. It is urgent to study the tensile strength and tensile failure mechanism of the gravelly soil in the core for the anti-crack design of the actual high earth core rockfill dam. Based on the self-developed uniaxial tensile test device, a series of uniaxial tensile test was carried out on gravelly soil with different gravel content. The compaction test shows a good linear relationship between the optimum water content and gravel content, and the relation curve of optimum water content versus maximum dry density can be fitting by two times polynomial. For the gravelly soil under its optimum water content and maximum dry density, as the gravel content increased from 0% to 50%, the tensile strength of specimens decreased from 122.6 kPa to 49.8 kPa linearly. The peak tensile strain and ultimate tensile strain all decrease with the increase of the gravel content. From the analysis of fracture energy, it is proved that the tensile capacity of gravelly soil decreases slightly with the increasing gravel content. In the case that the sample under the maximum dry density and the water content higher than the optimum water content, the comprehensive tensile capacity of the sample is the strongest. The relevant test results can provide support for the anti-crack design of the high earth core rockfill dam.
In this research, the effects of the gravel content on the liquefaction behavior for both of the isotropically and $K_0-anisotropically$ consolidated gravel-sand mixtures are investigated. for this purpose, the cyclic triaxial tests for the specimens with the same relative density (Dr=40%) and variations of gravel content were performed. On the other hand, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were carried out on the isotropically consolidated gravel-sand mixtures with the same void ratio (e=0.7) and from 0% to 30% gravel contents. Void ratios of gravel-sand mixtures with the same relative density (Dr=40%) are found to decrease significantly with the increase of the gravel content from 0% to about 70% and increase thereafter. But the void ratio of the sand matrix among the gravel skeleton increases with the increase of the gravel contents. Test results are as follows : for the isotropically consolidated specimen with 40% of relative density and low gavel contents (GC=0%, 20%, 40%), pore water pressure development and axial strain behavior during undrained cyclic loading show similar behavior to those of the loose sand because of high void ratio, and the specimens with high gravel content (70%) both pore pressure and strata behaviors are similar to those of dense sand. And the isotropically consolidated specimens with the same void ratio (e=0.7) and higher gravel contents show the same behavior of pore water pressure and axial strain as that of the loose sand, but for the lower gravel content this behavior shows similar behavior to that of dense sand. The liquefaction strength of the isotropically consolidated specimens with the same relative density increases with gravel content up to 70%, and the strength decreases with the increase of the gravel content at the same void ratio. Thus, it is confirmed that the liquefaction strength of the gravel-sand mixtures depends both on relative density and void ratio of the whole mixture rather than the relative density of the sand matrix filled among gravels. On the other hand, the behavior of pore water pressure and axial strain for the $K_0-anisotropically$ consolidated gravel-sand mixtures shows almost the same cyclic behavior of the sand with no stress reversal even with some stress reversal of the cyclic loading. Namely, even the stress reversal of about 10% of cyclic stress amplitude, the permanent strain with small cyclic strain increases rapidly with the number of cycles, and the initial liquefaction does not occur always with less than maximum pore water pressure ratio of 1.0. The liquefaction resistance increases with the gravel contents between 0% and 40%, but tends to decrease beyond 40% of gravel content. In conclusion, the cyclic behavior of gravel-sand mixtures depends on factors such as gravel content, void ratio, relative density and consolidation condition.

Continuous monocropping of Chinese cabbage in Gangwon highland increased gravel and sand contents due to surface soil erosion. Nutrient leaching and Chinese cabbage growth were investigated with different treatments of gravel contents and nitrogen application levels by using $0.5m^2$ Wagner pots. Gravel contents were 0, 10, 30, 50, 70, and 90%(w/w), nitrogen application levels were 60, 120, and 240 kg/ha, and manure compost application rate was 15 ton per hectare, respectively. Wagner pots were filled with loamy sand soil mixed with 5 cm-sized gravels. Fresh weight of Chinese cabbage was decreased as gravel contents in soil increased, and particularly severely decreased at 240 kg-N/ha. Yields of Chinese cabbage were remarkably decreased at the rate of 60 kg-N/ha with 30% gravel content and 120 kg-N/ha with 50% gravel content. Most of Chinese cabbages were severely wilted by heavy N application at the rate of 240 kg-N/ha in the middle of growth stages regardless of gravel contents, while about 50% of Chinese cabbage showed wilting symptom in the treatment of more than 50% of gravel contents and 120 kg-N/ha. N content in leachate increased as gravel content and N application increased. The relationship between gravel content and N contents showed linear regression: N in leachate = 0.014(gravel content) -0.039 (r = 0.961). Particularly, $NH_4-N$ contents in leachates with more than 30% gravel content and 240 kg-N/ha ranged from $139{\sim}339mg/L$. Chinese cabbage growth in loamy sand soil containing 30%, and 50% gravel contents could be adversely affected by N application at the rate of 240, and 120 kg-N/ha, respectively.
In order to clarify the influence of gravel content on the mechanical properties of gravel-mixed decompose granite soils, large-scale one-dimensional compression tests were performed. The sample used in the study was a decomposed granite soil from Shimonoseki in Yamaguchi prefecture in Japan. After adjusting the grain size of the said soils, the specimen compacted with a certain level of compaction energy was put to the test. Based on the results obtained, when gravel-mixed decomposed granite soil was compacted at the same energy level, there existed the specific gravel content at which dry density was maximum and which also produced the minimum compression index. Furthermore, from these results, an expression based on a two-phase mixture theory was proposed to quantitatively evaluate the effects of gravel content and initial dry density and the material parameters calculated through the proposed method proved to exactly estimate the actual measuring value.

This study is performed to examine the physical and mechanical properties of eco-concrete with polypropylene fiber. Test results show that the strengths are increased with increase of the content of natural gravel, excellent soil compound and polypropylene fiber. The coefficient of permeability is increased with increase of the content of the polypropylene fiber but it is decreased with increase of the content of natural gravel and excellent soil compound. The lowest coefficient of permeability is achieved by eco-concrete which it is 100 times lower than that of the control. The durability factor is increased with increase of the content of natural gravel and excellent soil compound, and decreased with increase of the content of polypropylene fiber.
In recent years, geotextile-encased gravel columns (usually called stone columns) have become a popular method to increasing soil shear strength, decreasing the settlement, acceleration of the rate of consolidation, reducing the liquefaction potential and increasing the bearing capacity of foundations. The behavior of improved loose base-soil with gravel columns under shear loading and the shear stress-horizontal displacement curves got from large scale direct shear test are of great importance in understanding the performance of this method. In the present study, by performing 36 large-scale direct shear tests on sandy base-soil with different fine-content of zero to 30% in both not improved and improved with gravel columns, the effect of the presence of gravel columns in the loose soils were investigated. The results were used to predict the shear stress-horizontal displacement curve of these samples using support vector machines (SVM). Variables such as the non-plastic fine content of base-soil (FC), the area replacement ratio of the gravel column (Arr), the geotextile encasement and the normal stress on the sample were effective factors in the shear stress-horizontal displacement curve of the samples. The training and testing data of the model showed higher power of SVM compared to multilayer perceptron (MLP) neural network in predicting shear stress-horizontal displacement curve. After ensuring the accuracy of the model evaluation, by introducing different samples to the model, the effect of different variables on the maximum shear stress of the samples was investigated. The results showed that by adding a gravel column and increasing the Arr, the friction angle (ϕ) and cohesion (c) of the samples increase. This increase is less in base-soil with more FC, and in a proportion of the same Arr, with increasing FC, internal friction angle and cohesion decreases.
Various sizes of gravels are included in the most field soils that are utilized for civil constructions. Especially, the small amounts of gravel are often included in selected soils for backfill materials, earth dams, and subbase ground. In such cases, the small amounts of mixed gravel and its shape may influence the determination of dry density of soils, which results in an inaccurate degree of compaction for soils in the field. In this study, a dry density of sand with various gravel contents (0, 10, 17, 23, 29 and 33%) and three different sizes (2.0-2.36, 3.35-4.75, 5.6-10.0 mm) was experimentally investigated for compacted or loosely packed conditions. The loosely packed sand with gravels was simulated by pouring sand into compaction mould and its density was determined. When a 33% of gravel content was mixed with sand, its dry density increased up to 15-20% for compacted specimen and 20-23% for loosely packed specimen. When a gravel content and size were the same, a dry density of compacted specimen was $0.1-0.16g/cm^3$ higher than that of loosely packed specimen. Even though the same gravel content was used, a dry density of sand with big gravels was $0.04-0.08g/cm^3$ higher than that of sand with small gravels for compacted specimen and $0.03-0.05g/cm^3$ for loosely packed specimen.

In this study, large triaxia mpression tests of sand-gravel soils were carry out to clarify the influence of fines on shear strength characteries. Two soil specimens with/without fines that is used for construction material of dam were prepared. One was reproduced with wide range of grain size and the other was removed fines below 2mm from the one. The compaction tests proposed by our center were performed to obtain relative density of the specimens, and then each specimen was adjusted two dry density. The large triaxial compression tests were carry out under CD condition. Based on the results, the sand-gravel soils with low fines content has no effect on shear strength characteries.
This paper describes the study and test for sand and gravel embankment in winter season and also contribute to the development of construction method for the practical purposes. In order to make possible sand and gravel embankment in winter season, at first, the following eriteria on work are given under the normal weather condition: 1) The maximum diameter of material shall not exceed 30cm and sand content which is the ratio of the weight of sand to gravel shall not exceed 60% 2) Spreading depth shall not exceed 60cm each layer of material shall be compacted by over 6 times passing by thell ton smooth drum type of uibratory roller and the relative density shall exceed 60% In addition to the above conditions, the following criteria are given as winter season condition. 3) Sand contsnt shall not exceed 25%, and water content shall not exceed 4% 4) Dwing construction, the air temperature should be $70^{\circ}C$ below zero at minimum and $3^{\circ}C$ below zero onthe average and all the construction work should he continued without intersuptions. With above criteria, it is come to a conclusion that the conclusion that the construction of sand and gravel embankment in winter season will be done satisfactorily without any difficulty. On the basis of these criteria an actual construction was practiced and it was proved that those criteria are applicable to actual embankment of materials.
Recent researches on the behavior of gravelly soils have been focused mainly on the relative density or on the gravel content. And some researchers presented the liquefaction behavior based on the relative density whereas others based on the gravel content of gravelly soil. However the relative densities vary with gravel content and relative density is not enough to fully express the behavior of gravelly soils. Therefore in this research state parameter which considers void ratio and effective confining pressure is introduced and Steady State Line(SSL) of gravelly soils for various gravel content are determined by undrained triaxial tests in order to express the behavior of gravelly soils. From the research the position of SSL moved downward with gravel content. And the same density of soil showed dense sand behavior or loose sand behavior depending upon the confining pressure. Especially relative density 80% of gravelly soil showed loose sand behavior under high confining pressure. However the gravelly soils with similar state parameters showed similar stress behaviors. It can bee seen that state parameter is useful tool to evaluate undrained behavior of gravelly soils. Also state parameter and undrained strength showed good correlations.
