  • Leakage and Bragg condition of optical waveguides with blazed grating profile are evaluated in detail by using novel and rigorous modal transmission-line theory (MTLT) based on eigenvalue problem. The blazed waveguides classified as symmetric, sawtooth and asymmetric gratings occur leaky-wave stop-band at Bragg conditions and anomalies based on Rayleigh condition near Bragg conditions. Furthermore, DFB properties of blazed waveguides at Bragg conditions are analyzed by applying longitudinal equivalent transmission-line with characteristic impedance of periodic grating. The numerical results show that the reflected power of DFB waveguides is maximized at Bragg conditions in which leaky-wave stop-bands occur.

  • We have investigated the ultimate limits of nonuniform grating couplers (NGCs) for optimized fiber coupling to silicon waveguides, compared to uniform grating couplers (UGCs). Simple grating coupler schemes, which can be fabricated in etching steps of the conventional complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers without forming any additional overlay structure, have been simulated numerically and demonstrated experimentally. Optimum values of the grating period, fill factor, and groove number for ultimate coupling efficiency of the NGCs are determined from finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulation, and confirmed with experimentally demonstrated devices by comparison to those for the UGCs. Our simulated results indicate that maximum coupling efficiency of NGCs is possible when the minimum pattern size is below 50 nm, but the experimental value for the maximum coupling efficiency is limited by the attainable fabrication tolerance in a practical device process.

  • In this paper we proposed a new Bragg grating waveguide in order to improve reflectivity and to achieve compactness. Bragg gratings with various thicknesses were engraved in the middle of the core layer with a length of 3 mm. For the sake of cost-effectiveness, the $3^{rd}$ order Bragg grating waveguides were fabricated via conventional photolithography. The maximum reflectivities for the fixed width waveguide of $6{\mu}m$ with the 0.1 and $0.3{\mu}m$-thick Bragg gratings were, -13.14 and -6.25 dB, respectively, and the Bragg wavelengths were 1562.28, 1564.10 nm, respectively. A slight increase in the Bragg grating thickness can result in a remarkable reduction in the length of the Bragg grating waveguide with a fixed reflectivity.

  • Computer code was developed to design waveguide gratings based on coupled-mode equations and the transfer matrix formalism. The experimental set-up has been constructed for inscribing Bragg gratings in planar waveguides with a phase mask and uv laser beam, which enables alignment and packaging of grating devices as well as in-situ performance measurements. Bragg grating has been fabricated on silica planar waveguides with 0.75% Germanium concentration and its transmittance spectrum was measured to have 95% reflectance at the peak wavelength. Optical losses as the function of the misalignment were measured and their usage is described.

  • Submicron gratings are fabricated holographically on thin film single mode and multimode waveguides. Thin film waveguides are made by spin-coating polyurethane solution on the substrates of microscope slide glass and Corning 7059 glass. In order to characterize thin film waveguides, the refract사e index and the thickness of thin films are measured by using the m-line spectroscopy. The fabricated gratings are tested as a grating coupler, a mode converter, and a beam splitter. Also chirped gratings are fabricated to observe beam expansion phenomena and thus the possibility of the wavelength demultiplexing.

  • In this paper, four apodization functions are proposed for silicon-on-insulator (SOI) strip waveguides with sidewall-corrugated gratings. The effects of apodization functions on the full width at half maximum (FWHM), the side-lobe level, and the reflectivity of the reflection spectrum are studied using the coupled-mode theory (CMT) and the transfer-matrix method (TMM). The results show that applying proposed apodization functions creates very good filtering characteristics. Among investigated apodized waveguides, the apodization functions of Polynomial and z-power have the best performance in reducing side-lobes, where the side-lobe oscillations are entirely removed. Four functions are also used for precise adjustment of the bandwidth. Simulation results show that the minimum and maximum values of the FWHM are 0.74 nm and 8.48 nm respectively. In some investigated functions, changing the apodization parameters decreases the reflectivity which is compensated by increasing the grating length.

  • This paper describes a low-loss, compact, 40-channel arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) which utilizes a monolithically integrated spot-size converter (SSC) for lowering the coupling loss between silica waveguides and standard single-mode fibers. The SSC is a simple waveguide structure that is tapered in both the vertical and horizontal directions. The vertically tapered structure was realized using a shadow-mask etching technique. By employing this technique, the fabricated, 40-channel, 100 GHz-spaced AWG with silica waveguides of 1.5% relative index-contrast showed an insertion-loss figure of 2.8 dB without degrading other optical performance.

  • We have studied the effects of interface on polarization dependence of waveguide and designed the polarization independent 2-dimensional waveguides on InP for arrayed waveguide grating. To figure out the effects of interface on polarization dependence, we have solved the 1-dimensional wave equation using a transfer matrix method. It is shown that the birefringence becomes stronger as the number of interfaces increases. In order to design polarization independent 2-dimensional waveguides, we have used effective index method. The structures considered are ridge type, raised strip type, and buried type waveguide. In the cases of ridge and raised strip type, conventional effective index method was used. In the case of buried type corrected effective index method was used. We have determined the height and width of waveguides such that the waveguides become polarization independent.

  • For demonstrating widely tunable external cavity lasers operating for near-infrared (NIR) wavelength, a flexible polymer waveguide with an imbedded Bragg grating is incorporated. Due to the superior flexibility of the polymer material, the reflection wavelength of the Bragg grating is widely tunable by imposing tensile and compressive strains on the flexible Bragg grating. A third-order Bragg grating is formed on the device for facilitating the fabrication method. With a superluminescent laser diode as a gain medium of ECL, the tunable laser exhibited output power of -3 dBm and a tuning range of 32 nm.
