Rockfill zones in CFRD consist typically of large granular materials, usually the maximum particle size up to several meters, which makes laboratory testing to determine the mechanical properties of rockfill difficult. Commonly, the design strength of the rockfills is obtained by scaling down the original rockfill materials and performing laboratory strength tests for the reduced size materials. The objective of the present study is to investigate the effect of particle size on the shear behavior and the strength for granular materials. A series of large-scale triaxial tests was conducted on large granular materials with the maximum particle size varying from 20 to 50mm. The test results showed that overall shear behaviors were similar between the samples with different particle sizes while there were slight differences in the magnitudes of the peak shear stress between the samples. In addition, a simulation of the granular material with the max. particle size of 20mm was performed using DEM code, $PFC^{2D}$, and compared with the test results. The deviatoric stress versus strain behaviors of experimental and numerical tests were found to be matched well up to the peak stress state.
As construction cases of structure are increasing in the soft ground, the necessity of ground improvement is also increasing. Granular pile is one of the improvement methods for soft ground and for loose sandy soil. In domestic, SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) method using sand material has been mainly used to improve soft ground, but Granular pile with crushed-stone was not used much. However, alternative material such as crushed-stone is needed to substitute for sand due to the environmental and economical problems. In this study, staged load test and consolidation test were performed in the laboratory to observe the behavior of soft ground improved by Granular pile. In order to evaluate the characteristics such as bearing capacity, drainage, md settlement, sand and crushed-stone were applied as each pile material. The test results show that crushed-stone has higher bearing capacity and less settlement than those of sand under similar fore water pressure condition. Therefore, crushed-stone is determined to be appropriate as the substitute for sand.
In an effort to protect a RBSC(reaction -bonded SiC) tube SiC films from methyltrichlorosilane(MTS) by low pressure chemical vapor deposition were deposited in hydrogen atmosphere on the RBSC(reaction-bonded SiC) substrates over a range of input gas ratio(${\alpha}=P_{H2}/P_{MTS}=Q_{H2}/Q_{MTS}$=1 to 10) and deposition temperatures(T=1050~1300$^{\circ}C$). At the temper-ature of 1250$^{\circ}C$ the growth rate of SiC films increased and then decreased with decreasing the input gas ratio. The microstructure of SiC films was changed from granular type structure exhibiting (111) preferred orientation in the high input gas ratios to faceted columnar grain structure showing (220) in the low input gas ratios. The similar microstructure change was obtained by increasing the deposition temperature. These results were closely related to a change of deposition mechanism. Double layer structure having granular type and faceted ciolumnar grain structure from the manipulation of mechanism. Double layer structure having granular type and faceted columnar grain structure from the manipulation of the input gas ratio without changing the deposition temperatue was successfully fabricated through in -site process.

The composition and the microstructure of the Zn-Cr alloys electroplated in chloride bath with EDTA were studied according to electrolysis conditions. The cathode current efficiency decreased with increasing both Cr/(Cr+Zn) ratio and current density. The Cr content of the alloy deposits increased with Cr/(Cr+Zn) ratio and current density The phase structure of Zn-Cr alloy deposits changed from η-Zn through η-Zn+${\gamma}$'-ZnCr to ${\gamma}$'-ZnCr with increasing Cr content of alloys. The surface morphology of Zn-Cr alloy deposits changed from fine needle shaped crystallites through the mixed structure of needle-shaped and granular one to the colony structure with fine granular crystallites according to the change of phase structure
In this paper, soil-structure interaction analysis has been presented for beams resting on multilayered geosynthetic-reinforced granular fill-soft soil system. The soft soil and geosynthetic reinforcements are idealized as nonlinear springs and elastic membranes, respectively. The governing differential equations are solved by finite difference technique and the results are presented in non-dimensional form. It is observed from the study that use of geosynthetic reinforcement is not very effective for maximum settlement reduction in case of very rigid beam. Similarly the reinforcements are not effective for shear force reduction if the granular fill has very high shear modulus value. However, multilayered reinforced system is very effective for bending moment and differential settlement reduction.
In this paper, a series of monotonic undrained shear tests were carried out on four kinds of sand-fine mixtures with various fines content. Two kinds of sands (Silica sand V3, V6) and fines (Iwakuni natural clay, Tottori silt) were mixed together in various proportions, while paying attention to the void ratio expressed in terms of sand structure $(F_c{\leq}F_{cth})$. The undrained shear strength of mixtures below the threshold fines content was observed so that as the plastic fines content increases, maximum deviator stress ratio decrease for dense samples while an increase is noted for loose samples. For non-plastic fines, the increase in the amount of fines leads to an increase in density of the soil, which results in an increase in strength. Then, the monotonic shear strength of the mixtures was estimated using the concept of granular void ratio. It was found that the shear strength of mixtures is greatly dependent on the skeleton structure of sand particles.
We investigated the relation between the presence of geosmin in water and the bacterial community structure within the granular activated carbon (GAC) system of water treatment plants in South Korea. GAC samples were collected in May and August of 2014 at three water treatment plants (Sungnam, Koyang, and Yeoncho in Korea). Dissolved organic carbon and geosmin were analyzed before and after GAC treatment. Geosmin was found in raw water from Sungnam and Koyang water treatment plants but not in that from Yeoncho water treatment plant. Interestingly, but not surprisingly, the 16S rRNA clone library indicated that the bacterial communities from the Sungnam and Koyang GAC systems were closely related to geosmin-degrading bacteria. Based on the phylogenetic tree and multidimensional scaling plot, bacterial clones from GAC under the influence of geosmin were clustered with Variovorax paradoxus strain DB 9b and Comamonas sp. DB mg. In other words, the presence of geosmin in water might have inevitably contributed to the growth of geosmin degraders within the respective GAC system.
The binary mixture consists of two types of granular media with different physical attributes and sizes, which can be characterized by the percentage of large granules by weight (P) and the particle size ratio (${\alpha}$). Researchers determine that two thresholds ($P_S$ and $P_L$) exist for the peak shear strength of binary mixtures, i.e., at $P{\leq}P_S$, the peak shear strength is controlled by the small granules; at $P{\leq}P_L$, the peak shear strength is controlled by the large granules; at $P_S{\leq}P{\leq}P_L$, the peak shear strength is governed by both the large and small granules. However, the thresholds of binary mixtures with different ${\alpha}$ values, and the explanation related to the inner details of binary mixtures to account for why these thresholds exist, require further confirmation. This paper considers the mechanical behavior of binary mixtures with DEM analysis. The thresholds of binary mixtures are found to be strongly related to their coordination numbers $Z_L$ for all values of ${\alpha}$, where $Z_L$ denotes the partial coordination number only between the large particles. The arrangement structure of the large particles is examined when P approaches the thresholds, and a similar arrangement structure of large particles is formed in both 2D and 3D particle systems.
The integumental secretory structure is exocrine unicellular gland located in the epidermis of goldfish, Carassius auratus, and divided into two groups, mucous and granular cells. By the histochemical studies of integumental secretions the mucos cells reacted for acidic polysaccharides, and the granular cells for neutral glycoprotein. According to concentration of the secretion the integumental mucous are gradually sulphated. The mucous cells are typical form of goblet cell located in the upper region of the epidermis, and membrane bounded vesicles of the mucous are observed several size and electron densities by the cellular differentiation. The granular cells in middle and lower epidermis are present syncitial forms occasionally, and contain electron dense granules sized $1.0{\mu}m$ which are accumulated in cytoplasmic process held the cells to the basal lamina. The precursors of the integumental secretory materials are originated from the rough endoplasmic reticulum and next transported through the Golgi apparatus as a form of membrane bounded vesicles. After accomplish this process mature secretions are extruded to integumental surface by the mechanism of merocrine secretion in response to nerve stimulations respectively.
