The current study developed light-weighted mixed soil that can solve problems related with soft soil such as ground subsidence, sliding and lateral displacement of ground. By reducing weight of reclaimed soil through mixing phosphogypsum and recycled EPS beads with the weathered granite soil. A series of geotechnical laboratory tests including physical index test, compaction test, CBR test, and direct shear test were performed and engineering properties were reviewed in order to assess applicability of the light-weighted mixed soil for roads and abutment and various back-filling materials at the reclamation area. Based on the laboratory test results, it was found that the maximum dry unit weight of the light-weighted soil ranges $14.32{\sim}15.79kN/m^3$ and the optimum water content ranges 21.91~24.23%, which means there is 11~19.3% weight decrease effect when comparing with general weathered granite soil. Also it was found that the corrected CBR value ranges 10.4~18.4% satisfying the domestic regulations on road subgrade and back-filling material. In addition, as for shear strength parameter, cohesion ranges 10.79~18.64 kPa and internal frictional angle ranges $35.4{\sim}37.2^{\circ}$, which are similar with those of general construction soil and back-filling material used in Korea. So it can be concluded that light-weighted mixed soil with phosphogypsum can be used effectively for soft reclamation ground as actual filling material and back-filling material. From the current study, it was found that light-weighted mixed soil with phosphogypsum has not only weight reduction effect, but also has no special problems in shear strength and bearing capacity. Therefore, it is expected that phosphogypsum can be recycled in bulk as road subgrade and back-filling material at the reclamation area.
Groundwater sampling was performed at 38 wells where they are located in the areas with high uranium and radon (marked as A and B, respectively) concentrations, which were based on the previous research results. In-situ parameters (temperature, pH, EC, Eh, DO) and natural radionuclides (uranium and radon) were analyzed to figure out the characteristics of groundwater environments. In-situ data did not show any relations to natural radionuclide data, which could be caused by groundwater mixing, depths of wells, and geological settings, etc. But the highest radon well presented relatively low temperature value and the highest uranium well presented relatively low pH values The highest uranium concentration ranging $1.14{\sim}188.19{\mu}g/L$ showed in the area of A region consisted of Jurassic two-mica granite. The areas of Jurassic biotite granite and Cretaceous granite in the A region have the uranium concentrations ranging $0.10{\sim}49.78{\mu}g/L$ and $0.36{\sim}3.01{\mu}g/L$, respectively. The uranium values from between wells of community water systems (CWSs) penetrating fractured bed-rock aquifers and personal boreholes settled in shallow aquifers near the wells of CWSs show big differences. It implies that the groundwaters of the two areas have evolved from different water-rock interaction paths that may caused by various types of wells having different aquifers. High radon activities in the area of B region composed of Precambrian gneiss showed ranging from 6,770 to 64,688 pCi/L. Even though the wells are located in the same geological settings, their rodon concentration presented different according to depth and distance.
The current practice in construction of reinforced earth retaining walls is to use a granular soil for the backfill material. When the material is available in site, the construetion cost can be remarkably reduced. As the weathered granite soils are abundant and widely distributed throughout the Korean peninsula: whether they are suitable or not as the backfill material is considered to be the most important key in economic construction of the wall. This paper investigates the grain size distribution of the weathered soils which locate at many places throughout the nation and then examines limitation of their use based on the specifications of different countries. The variaton of shear strength with both different fine contents and saturation is also investigated. It is known that the grain size distribution of most weathered soils are not satisfied with the general requirement. However their use is possible in wide range when the backfill keeps in unsaturated condition using good drainage facilities and 1 or pervious reinforcements.

In this study, flowable backfill made with weathered granite soil is tested to provide basic engineering properties that can be used as design input to overcome settlement problems in road pavement due to low stiffness of backfill which is generated by porosity of the soil. For design purpose, a proper mixing ratio is developed first. Then several test methods including FF/RC, PMT and LDWT including axial compression test are adapted for checking stiffness and measuring axial strength of the material separately that can be used for design values.
The arm of this study is to determine harmful radioactive gas($Rn^{222}$)-concentrations in soils and to suggest the anormalous regions of $Rn^{222}$-concentration in Taejeon area. The range of $Rn^{222}$-concentration in the soils (45 samples) of the survey area is 100 to 2, 475 (pCi/L) and mean$\pm$$\sigma$ of those values is 489$\pm$ 505 (pCi/L). The 2% (4 samples) of soil-gas samples (45 ones) collected In the survey area is corresponded to high rusk level, 53% (24 samples) to medium one and 43% (19 samples) to low one. Especially. The $Rn^{222}$-concentration is relatively higher in schistose granite region than in other rock Mts (two-mica granite and biotite ganite) in the survey area. The $Rn^{222}$-concentration is propotional to the uranium contents in the soils. The soil hardness among the various factors is correlative with $Rn^{222}$-concentrations. To prevent the damage from $Rn^{222}$-concentrations, It is necessary to close the cracks of underground structure and to consider methods reducing $Rn^{222}$-concentration for the anormalous regions.

In the trackbed design using elastic multi-layer model, the stress-dependent resilient modulus is an important input parameter, which reflects substructure performance under repeated traffic loading. The resilient moduli of crushed stone and weathered granite soil were developed using nonlinear dynamic stiffness, which can be measured by in-situ and laboratory seismic tests. The prediction models of resilient modulus varying with the deviatoric or bulk stress were proposed (Park et al., 2008). To investigate the performance of the prediction models proposed herein, the elastic response of the test trackbed near PyeongTaek, Korea was evaluated using a 3-D nonlinear elastic computer program (GEOTRACK) and compared with measured elastic vertical displacement during the passages of freight and passenger trains. The material types of the test sub-ballasts are crushed stone and weathered granite soil, respectively. The calculated vertical displacements within the sub-ballasts are within the order of 1mm, and agree well with measured values with the reasonable margin. The prediction models are thus concluded to work properly in the preliminary investigation. The prediction models proposed for resilient modulus were verified by the comparison of the calculated vertical displacements with measured ones during train passages.

The interest in the dynamic properties of soils has increased strongly because of earthquake, heavy traffic, and foundations undergo high amplitude of vibrations. Most of soils in Korean peninsula are composed of granite soils, especially the decomposed mudstone soils are widely spread in Pohang areas, Kyong-buk province. Therefore, it Is very important to investigate the dynamic properties of these types of soils. The most important soil parameters under dynamic loadings are shear modulus and material dampings. Furthermore, few definitive data exist that can evaluate the behavior of unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils under dynamic loading conditions. The investigations described in this paper is designed to identify the shear modulus and damping ratio due to a surface tension for the unsaturated decomposed mudstone soils ulder low and high strain amplitude, For this purpose, the resonant column test and the cyclic triaxial test were performed. Test results and data have shown that the optimum degree of saturation under low and strain amplitude is 32 ∼ 37% which is higher than that of decomposed granite due to the amount of fine particles as well as the type and proportion of chief rock-forming minerals.

The purpose of the study for the development of the technologies of water quality monitoring and contamination protection at water resource aquifer is to secure the groundwater as potable water resources. The results of water analysis as a basis of potable water criteria showed that 30 groundwater samples among 138 samples of small water supply system (21.7%) were exceeded the water criteria. The concentrations of Cl, $NO_3$ and Na for granite area are higher than those of gneiss and metasedimentary rocks of Ogcheon belt area and they are caused by the high vulnerability of groundwater at granite region where the residential area and cultivated land are concentrated. The spatial distribution of components indicated the close relationships between water quality and geology, land use, and topography. The multivariate statistical results showed that the water samples are divided into three groups by geology.
Recently, construction of the reinforced earth structures, which adopts reinforcing materials of geosynthetic, is rapidly increasing due to its good economic advantages, beautiful appearance, and convenient construction. Nonetheless, the most important factor of interpretation and design of the reinforced earth structures, which is assessment ways of friction features between earth and geosynthetic, has not been standardized yet. It has great difference of interpretation and design methods which suggested to the design engineer. This study is to present the way how to assess more reasonably friction features between geogrid and weathered granite soil through the pullout test. Based on a large-scale pullout test of geogrid, the maximum shear stress, interface fricton angle, and friction efficiency are presented with consideration of various test condition.
