  • Recently, in Korea, problems related with unstability of slope or sinkhole in urban area due to erosion of compacted granite soil which was used as a backfill or embankment material have been treated as important issues. Small hole might develop inside of backfill area due to erosion of not only weathered granite soil but also clay, silt, fine sand size particles when underground water flows. Once erosion starts in a soil mass, erosion rate increases gradually to cause rapid destruction. In this study, a rotating cylinder test (RCT) was performed to evaluate the hydraulic resistance characteristics of compacted weathered granite soil under various relative densities and preconsolidation pressures. Meanwhile, an image analysis method was introduced to analyze radius of irregularly eroded sample. It was found that image analysis is an effective means of minimizing the error in calculating a critical shear stress and threshold shear stress on the irregularly eroded sample. Furthermore, in general, hydraulic resistance capacity increases with the increase of relative density and preconsolidation pressure.

  • To investigate the unsaturated characteristics of the Boeun granite weathered soil, matric suction and volumetric water content were measured in both drying and wetting paths using Automated Soil-Water Characteristics Curve Apparatus. Based on the measured results, Soil-Water Characteristics Curve was estimated by van Genuchten (1980) model. The relationship between effective degree of saturation and matric suction showed the non-linear curve with S-shape and the hysteresis phenomenon occurred during drying and wetting paths. Suction Stress Characteristics Curve was estimated by the Lu and Likos (2006) model. The suction stress in drying path was constantly maintained and that in wetting path tended to increase when the effective degree of saturation was low. But the suction stress in drying path was larger than that in wetting path at the same degree of saturation when the effective degree of saturation became larger. Meanwhile, Hydraulic Conductivity Function was evaluated by the van Genuchten (1980) model which is one of the parameter estimation methods. The unsaturated hydraulic conductivity decreased with increasing the matric suction, and the decreasing velocity regarding to the matric suction in drying path was larger than that in wetting path.

  • In this paper, a method reasonably predicting soil water characteristic curve of domestic weathered granite soils was suggested, based on the test results obtained through experiments. In other words, a method to estimate the parameters of Fredlund and Xing's equation using an ANN (artificial neural network) was proposed. The particle size distribution, compacted water content and void ratio were used as input data in the ANN model for predicting the parameters, since it was found that these basic soil properties affect the parameters obtained from the test results and the fitting results of SWCC. The network model proposed in this study to obtain the parameters of Fredlund and Xing's SWCC equation produced reliable predictions, and the precision of the prediction results from the proposed method was high, in comparison with the prediction results of other methods.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the reaction mechanism of soil and bacteria solution by various mixing ratios. For this purpose, in order to understand the reaction mechanisms of microorganisms and weathered granite soil, the tests were carried out under various mixing ratios additives such as soil, bacteria solution, $Ca(OH)_2$ and fixture. The test results from this study are summarized as follows. Firstly, the reaction between the bacteria solution and fixture produced a precipitate called vaterite, a type of silicate and calcium carbonate. Secondly, as a result of SEM analysis, the resulting precipitates generated from the test results using the specimens with various mixing ratios except SW condition and the irregular spherical microscopic shapes were formed in the size of $150{\mu}m$ to $20{\mu}m$. In addition, it can be seen that the bacteria solution and the fixture reacted between the granules to form an adsorbent material layer on the surface, and the microorganisms had a biological solidifying effect when the pores are combined into hard particles. Finally, The XRD analysis of the sediment resulting from the reaction between the microorganism and the deposit control agent confirmed the presence of a type of calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) vaterite, which affects soil strength formation, as well as silicate($SiO_2$).

  • In order to evaluate the shear characteristics of undisturbed weathered granite soil which is a typical residual soil in Korea, the mechanical properties are first investigated and discussed by carrying out a series of direct shear test and then dilatancy correction is performed by using Taylor’s correction equation. In this study, specimens are sampled at Pungam(-3, -8, -13m below ground surface), Kwangju and Iksan(-5m below ground surface), Jeonbuk. The test results are summarized as follows: 1) Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is not linear under the low confining pressure. 2) The value of cohesion is smaller than usually determined value in low pressure region. 3) The value of strength parameter c and ø which are corrected by Taylor’s correction equation is a little bit small.

  • The lower ground of structure, in which the strip loads, such as earth dams and embankments , are signiificantly working on , is required to be interpreted as a state of plane strain where the strain of intermediated principal stress direction is put '0' . The plane strain state is frquently observed in actural soil engineering case. For those case, drained stress-strain and strength behavior of Iksan weathered granite soil prepared in cubical specimens with cross-anisotropic fabric was studied by conventional triaxial compression, plane strain and cubial triaxial tests with independent control of the three principal stress. All specimens were loaded under conditions of principl stress directions fixed and aligned with the directions of the material axes. As a result of research , when a ground condition is analyzed under plane strain state, the shear strength obtained from the conventional triaxial compression test can be understimated.

  • The strength parameters of two different type of disturbed weathered soils were investigated by the triaxial tests in this study. Soil samples include granite soils from two different sites and non-granite soils from six sampling sites. The results of this study indicate that the triaxial tests could be employed for determining the strength parameters for disturbed soil samples. When additional parameters are obtained by further experiments, they could be utilized in various engineering design practices.

  • The shear strength of weathered granite soils under unsaturated condition was evaluated by $K_0$ consolidated triaxial tests. Various matric suctions in the unsaturated triaxial tests were applied using suction-controlled triaxial test apparatus for weathered granite soils obtained in Daegu. Soil water characteristic curve (SWCC) laboratory tests for drying and wetting procedure were performed and van Genuchten curves were fitted by experimental results. The contribution of matric suction in unsaturated soils is directly correlated to effective stress and evaluated from SWCCs. The effective stresses were estimated from these SWCCs and the relationship between effective stress and unsaturated shear strength was determined. In the effective stress description, the unsaturated shear strength with respect to various suctions indicates unique relationship and almost the same as that of the saturated envelope.

  • This paper presents the results of experimental investigation on the effect of degree of saturation of soil on the pullout behavior of a geogrid. Different test variables were taken into account while performing the experiment including the soil physical conditions based on water content and external loading applied. The soil used was locally available weathered granite soil. The tests included variations in saturation of about 90%, 80%, 70% and 45% (optimum moisture content). The pullout tests were performed according to ASTM standard D 6706-01. The results indicate that increasing the degree of saturation in the soil decreases the pull-out capacity, which in turn decreases the interface friction angle and interaction coefficient. The decrease in the pullout interface coefficient was observed to be around 12.50% to 33.33% depending on the normal load and degree of saturation of the soil. The test results demonstrated the detrimental effect of increasing the degree of saturation within the reinforce soil on the pullout behavior of reinforcement, thus on the internal stability. The practical inferences of the outcomes are analyzed in detail.

  • The aims of this study are to evaluate the application on the stress-strain behavior of granite Soil using Lade's double work hardening constitutive model based on the theories of elasticity and plasticity. From two different sites of construction work, two disturbed and compacted weathered granite samples which are different in partical size and degree of weathering respectively were obtained. The specimen employed were sampled at Iksan and Pochon in order to predict the constitutive model. Using the computer program based on the regression analysis, 11 soil parameters for the model were determined from the simple tests such as an isotropic compression-expansion test and a series of drained conventional triaxial tests. In conclusion, it is shown that Lade's double work hardening model gives the good applicability for processing of stress-strain, work-hardening, work-softening and soil dilatancy. Therefore, this model in its present form is applicable to the compacted decomposed granite soil.
