In this study MD simulations have been performed to observe the behavior of a grain boundary in an a-Fe plate under 2-dimensional loading. In MD simulation the acceleration of every molecule can be achieved from the potential energy and the force interacting between each molecule and the integration of the motion equation by using Verlet method gives the displacement of each molecule. Initially four a-Fe rectangular plates having different misorientation angles of grain boundary were modeled by using the Johnson potential and Morse potential We compared the potential energy of the grain boundary system with that of the perfect structure model. Also we could obtain the width of the grain boundary by investigating the local potential energy distribution. The tensile loading for each grain boundary models was applied and the behavior of grin boundary was studied. From this study it was clarified that in the case using Johnson potential the obvious fracture mechanism occurs along the grain boundary in the case of Morse potential the diffusion of the grain boundary appears instead of the grain boundary fracture.
Hihg-toughened ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia ceramics with irregular grain shape and undulated grain boundary was prepared by ceria doping. Irregularity of grain shapes was increased with the amount of doped ceria. But in case of the large amount of doped ceria grain boundary was migrated to the reverse direction of DIGM. Ceria-stabilized zirconia ceramics annealed at 1650$^{\circ}C$ for 2h after twice dippings into cerium nitrate solu-tion of 0.2M and sintering at 1500$^{\circ}C$ for 2h showed the highest grain boundary length with a value of 23.6$\mu\textrm{m}$ Ceria concentration difference between convex and concave sides in irregular grains was observed over 1 mol% but not observed in normal grains, Specimens with normal grain shape showed intergranular fracture mode whereas the specimens with irregular grain shape showed transgranular fracture mode.
Post weld heat treatment (PWHT) is carried out to increase the fracture toughness in heat affected zone(HAZ) and remove the residual stress. There occur some problems such as toughness decreement and stress relief cracking(SRC) in the coarse grained HAZ subjected to the effect of tempering treatment. Especially, embitterment of structure directly relates to the mode of fracture and is appeared as the difference of fracture surface, that is, grain boundary failure. Therefore, in this paper, PWHT was carried out under the stress of 0, 10, 20 and $30kg/cm^2$ to simulate residual stress in HAZ welded by heat input of 10, 30 and 40KJ/cm. Applied stress in weld HAZ during PWHT assisted precipitin of over saturated alloying element in the structure, and grain boundary failure according to welding heat input didn't almost appear at the heat input of 10 KJ/cm, but it appeared from being the applied stress of $30kg/cm^2$ at $30KJ/cm and 20kg/mm^2$ at 40KJ/cm.

Using the Gleeble test, the effects of [Mn/S] ratios and the presence of sulfides on the high-temperature fracture morphology of heavy-section steel castings were analysed via the observations of the microstructures. The specimens for which the [Mn/S] ratio was in the range of 60~80 showed a ductile fracture morphology with an area reduction of more than 60%, while some specimens with similar [Mn/S] ratios showed a brittle fracture morphology with an area reduction of 0.0% due to the liquidation of sulfides at the grain boundary. The fracture morphology was classified into three types in the Gleeble high-temperature tensile test specimens. The first type showed dimple formation at the grain boundary, the formation of globular MnS sulfides, and plastic deformation of sulfides at an elevated temperature, indicating a needle-point type of ductile fracture with area reductions of 96.0~97.8%. The second type was a knife-edge type brittle fracture with an area reduction of 0.0% due to the film-type liquidation of sulfides at the grain boundary, band-type liquidation, and the liquidation of a terraced nipple pattern. The third type was the typical ductile fracture with an area reduction of 31.3~81.0%, in accordance with the mixture of dimples with in the grains and terraced nipple pattern at the grain boundary.
Effect of the grain boundary phases in Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics on the fracture tonghness has been investigated. The Si$_3$N$_4$-Y$_2$O$_3$-SiO$_2$, (YS) and Si$_3$N$_4$-Y$_2$O$_3$-Al$_2$O$_3$(YA) systems were Can/HIP treated at 1750$^{\circ}C$ and then heat-treated at 1800∼2000$^{\circ}C$. The fracture toughness of the YA system, the grain boundary phase was only glass phase after heat-treatement, was increased. That of the YS system, however, the grain boundary phase was changed from crystalline and glass to glass phase after the heat -treatement above 1900$^{\circ}C$, was abruptly decreased. The reason of the sudden drop of the fracture toughness of the YS system was believed that the change of the grain boundary phases from crystalline and glass to glass phase effected un the fracture behavior.
SiAlON glasses are silicates or alumino-silicates, containing Mg, Ca, Y or rare earth (RE) ions as modifiers, in which nitrogen atoms substitute for oxygen atoms in the glass network. These glasses are found as intergranular films and at triple point junctions in silicon nitride ceramics and these grain boundary phases affect their fracture behaviour. This paper provides an overview of the preparation of M-SiAlON glasses and outlines the effects of composition on properties. As nitrogen substitutes for oxygen in SiAlON glasses, increases are observed in glass transition temperatures, viscosities, elastic moduli and microhardness. These property changes are compared with known effects of grain boundary glass chemistry in silicon nitride ceramics. Oxide sintering additives provide conditions for liquid phase sintering, reacting with surface silica on the $Si_3N_4$ particles and some of the nitride to form SiAlON liquid phases which on cooling remain as intergranular glasses. Thermal expansion mismatch between the grain boundary glass and the silicon nitride causes residual stresses in the material which can be determined from bulk SiAlON glass properties. The tensile residual stresses in the glass phase increase with increasing Y:Al ratio and this correlates with increasing fracture toughness as a result of easier debonding at the glass/${\beta}-Si_3N_4$ interface.
The aim of this study was to investigate the change in compressive strength, freacture behavior and degradation of piezoelectric properties with compressive cyclic loading in Pb(Zr, Ti)O3 of tetragonal, morphotropic phase boundary and rhombohedral composition. The highest compressive strength was found in rhombohedral composition. After poling treatment the strength increased by 8.4% and 6.5% in tetragonal and morphotropic phase boundary compositions respectively while changed little in rhombohedral. The increase of compressive strength after poling treatment is believed to be due to the internal stress around grain boundary by domain alginment toward electric field direction in the microstructures having tetragonality and the occurrence of domain switching to the direction perpendicular to electrical field during fracture. Fracture mode relatively change from transgranular to intergranular was observed in the large grain sized tetragonal and morphotropic phase boundary compositions before and after poling but the transgranular fracture mode always remained in the rhombohedral composition. From the X-ray diffractometer analysis the domains parallel to the electric field direction is known to undergo rearrangement during the cyclic loading into random direction that is responsible for the degradation of piezoelectric property.
Through the observation of wear scar of two ceramic materials, microstructural wear mechanisms was investigated. As for the $Al_2O_3$-5 vol% SiC nanocomposite, the grain boundary fracture was suppressed by the presence of SiC nano-particles. The intragranular SiC particles have inhibited the extension of plastic deformation through the whole grain. Part of plastic deformation was accommodated around SiC particles, which made a cavity at the interface between SiC and matrix alumina. On the other hand, gas-pressure sintered silicon nitride showed extensive grain boundary fracture due to the thermal fatigue. The lamination of wear scar was initiated by the dissolution of grain boundary phase. These two extreme cases showed the importance of microstructures in wear behavior.
In this study, electron microscopy, Fractography and $J_{IC}$ test have been used to investigate the fracture behaviour in the scope of aging temperature which 7075 Al-alloy can have high strength. Conclusions obtained on this study are as followed. 1) When the 7075 Al-alloy was aged for 24hrs at $120^{\circ}C$, it's mechanical properties was excellent but fracture toughness decrement resulted from intergranular fracture was emerged. 2) The state of aged for 24hrs at $100^{\circ}C$, had the highest fracture toughess. 3) We could infer that intergranular fracture occurred because preferrential precpitated precipitates in the grain boundary growed in the form of colinear along the grain boundary.

For pure Molybdenum carburized in mixed gases of argon and carbon monoxide, microstructural observations were carried out. X-ray diffraction analysis for carburized specimens revealed that brittle ${\alpha}-Mo_2C$- layer hardly formed in the case of low carbon monoxide concentration. Fracture strength of the specimen carburized at 1673 K for 16 h is about 550 MPa higher than that of the un-carburized specimen. SEM observation revealed that with increasing carburizing temperature, the region demonstrating a transgranular fracture mode progressed towards the center of specimen. This result means that the grain boundaries were strengthened by the grain boundary diffusion of carbon and the strength of grain boundaries exceeded that of grain itself.
