It is understood that drum speed of threshers and the moisture content of paddy grains to be threshed, respectively, have a signific:mt effect upon rice recoveries. Threshing under an increased drum speed would give a high performance rate, which is the general practice in custom work threshing in association with the use of semiauto-t hreshers. In the connection, however, it may result in the promotion of grain cracks and brokens of the rice product after milling. No reference or determination for an opti mum drum speed of the thresher is made available for various grain moisture contents at the time of the threshing operation and for different rice varieties especially for the Tongil rice varieties. This study was Conducted to find out and determine effects of the drum speeds on grain losses. The grain loss was quantified in terms of recovery rates of rice grains after treatments. Samples of each of all treatments were taken from the grain sampling plate placed in the grain conveyor of threshers. The grain sample plate was specially provided for this experiment. The brown-rice, milling, and head-rice recJveries were tes ted in the laboratory mill, respectively. Two rice varieties, Akibare and Suweon 251, each with five levels of different moist\ulcornerure contents at harvest and six levels of different drum speeds of threshers, were selected and used for treatments in this experiment. Two conditions of materials were tested in the thresher. One condition was to thresh the experimental material immediately after cutting, referred to as the wet-material thr eshing in this study. The other was to thresh the experimental :material, dried to contain about 15-16 percent of the grain moisture under the shocking operation. This is referred to as the dry-material threshing in this study. In additioon, field measurements for the grain moistures and drum-sdeeds under actual operation practices of the traditional field threshing, were conducted with a view to comparing with results of the experimental treatments. The results of the study may be summarized as follows: 1. For threshing treatments of Japonica-type rice variety (Akibare) , the effect of drum speeds and levels of grain moisture at cutting upon brown-rice, milling, and head-rice recoveries were found statistically significant. No significant difference in these recovery rates was noticed regardless of whether the material was threshed right after cutting or after drying by the shocking operation. 2. For the Tongil-sister rice variety(Suweon 251), milling recovery for the varied drum-speed and the grain~moisture level at cutting was found statististically significant. Th milling recovery was much significant when associated with the wet-material thres\ulcornerhing compared to the dry-material threshing. 3. The optimum peripheral velocity to be maintained at the edge of teeth on the thr\ulcorneresher drum was determined and may be recommanded as that of about 12 to 13 meters per second in view of the maximum recovery rate of the milled rice. 4. The effect of the drum speed on the qualitative loss of the milled rice was much greater in the case of the Tongil variety than Japonica. This effect was also greater by the wet-material threshing than by the dry-material threshing. Therefore, to apply the wet-material threshing operation for the Tongil variety, in particular, it should be very important to introduce the kind of threshing technology which would maintain the drum speed at optimum. 5. A field survey for the actual drum speed of threshing operations for 50 threshers indicated that average peripheral velccity was 12.76m/sec., and that the range was from 10.50 to 14.90m/sec. Approximately, more than 30% of the experimented and measured threshers were being operated at speeds which exceeded the optimum speed determined and assessed in this study. Accordingly, it should be highly desirable and important to take counter-measures against these threshing practices of operational overspeed.

This study was carried out to investigate the current use and the demand for Jeonju-bibimbab rice and to suggest the suitable range of bibimbab rice. We conducted a survey on varieties and rice quality of Jeonju bibimbab restaurants from April to August 2016. In a survey of 12 bibimbab restaurants in Jeonju, the restaurants showed that 83% of the 10 restaurants were using shindongjin rice variety. Characteristics of rice suitable for bibimbab were showed low stickiness, high hardness, so it should keep the shape of rice when cooked and mixed with the ingredients. and people tend to prefer a large grain of rice. Also, the rice used in bibimbab restaurants were examined the average percentages of head rice ratio 89%, protein content 6% and moisture content 14.5%. These results suggest that the quality of rice, which is suitable for bibimbab, is similar to the range of common rice. Thousand grain weight over 24g is especially preferred. In conclusion, the quality and grain size of rice preferred for bibimbab rice was the level of Shindongjin.
The concept of "adaptability to heavy nitrogen" of rice plant was reconsidered in view of productivity with Jinheung (leading local variety) and IR667 (semi tropical variety) under the field condition. The results are as follows; 1. IR667 had higher yield and leaf area index at high nitrogen level than Jinheung. 2. IR667 increased more panicles, spikelets, filled grain ratio and grain weight by increasing nitrogen. 3. IR667 showed higher productive efficiency of grain and leaf area per unit nitrogen. 4. IR667 was higher in the productive efficiency of grain per unit leaf area. 5. IR667 appeared as panicle and spikelet number type and Jinheung as grain weight type according to yield components. 6. These results indicate that IR667 has greater productive adaptability to heavy nitrogen under the field condition.
Six commercial rice varieties were cultivated at different locations in 1987 and 1988. Rice samples harvested from 8 to 20 locations for a variety each year were used to measure or observe grain appearance, amylose content and alkali digestibility, cooked rice texture using rheometer, gelatinization and viscosity of rice flour using amylograph, and eating Quality of cooked rice by sensory evaluation. Relationship between Quality characteristics showing large locational variation were analized to approach the long-term objective, rice grain Quality standardization. Percent white-center and white-belly grain of the same variety showed great variation between locations, but did not affect on 1000-grain weight, amylose content and alkali digestibility, amylogram and rheogram characteristics, and eating Quality of cooked rice. Positive correlationship were obtained between maximum viscosity and break down, and maximum viscosity and alkali digestibility. Set back was correlated negatively with maximum viscosity, break down and alkali digestibility. Rice samples having significantly lower values of maximum viscosity and break down and higher set back value at the same time showed higher ADV and lower texture palatability index (TPI) and viscousness/hardness ratio (Vi/H), and lower sensory evaluation score of cooked rice compared with those of rices having typically higher values of maximum viscosity and break down and lower set back value. When TPI, Vi/H and overall sensory eating score of cooked rices measured were divided into three categories, high, medium and low using deviation from locational mean value of a variety, many of rice samples having high TPI or high Vi/H showed medium or high in overall sensory eating score of cooked rice.

One of the problems in increasing rice production is getting lines or varieties that have high adaptability so that able to produce maximum production in a variety of environmental conditions. One strategy that can be done to get adaptive varieties is through the improvement of native varieties. This research was conducted in rain fed paddy field, Aceh province, Indonesia from June to September 2014. The texture of the soil was clay-loam with the soil pH ranged from 6.5-6.7. Five potential progenies of rice from crossing between native Indonesian rice with introduced rice varieties consist of C3, C4, S3, S5, S6 were used in this study. Besides that, one national rice variety Ciherang also used as a comparison. The plants were growth in the plot with the size of $2m{\times}1.4m$ with plant distance was $20cm{\times}20cm$. The fertilizers used in this study were Urea, NPK, and KCl. Randomized block design with 6 rice progenies/variety and 3 replications were used in this study. There were 18 experimental units and each experimental unit had 10 samples for the sources of data. The variables that were observed in this study including plant height at harvesting time, number of productive tiller, the percentage of empty grains and filled grain per panicle, weight of filled grains per hill, weight of filled grain per plot and yield potential per hectare. Analyzed were also conducted for the depth of root penetration, dry-root weight, dry-shoot weight, shoot-root weight ratio and its correlation with the weight of filled grain per hill. The research results show that there was significant difference on plant height at harvesting time, number of productive tillers, the percentage of empty grains and filled grain per panicle, weight of filled grains per hill, weight of filled grain per plot and yield potential per ha (p>0.01) among the treatments. In addition, depth root penetration, dry-root weight, dry-shoot weight, shoot-root weight ratio also had significant difference (p>0.01) among the treatment. The highest plant at harvesting time was found in S6, reaching 129.8 cm and the shortest plants was found in C3 reaching 107.5 cm. The largest number of productive tillers and the highest percentage of filled grains per panicle were found in Ciherang reaching 10.5 tillers and 80.7% respectively. Ciherang also had the heaviest weight of filled grains per hill and per plot reaching 21.1 g and 2.18 kg respectively. Whereas, S6 had the lowest number of tillers and the lowest percentage of filled grain per panicle.. The highest yield potential per ha was found in Ciherang reaching 7.79 tons. Among the progenies, S5 had the highest yield potential reaching 5 tons/Ha. The result also showed significant relationship between shoot-root weight ratio with weight of filled grains per hill. The highest value of shoot-root weight ratio (1.57) in Ciherang is thought had closed relationship with its yield potential.
Pot and paddy field tests were conducted to study red discoloration of rice var. IR 667 leaves with reference to the leading Korean native variety Jinhung and Paldal, with the following results: 1. Minor elements such as Mn, Fe, B, Al, Ca and Si had no influence on the discoloration, but a supply of various soluble nitrogen compounds completely restricted it. The more prosperous the growth of IR 667 with nitrogen, the more severe the discoloration appears when nitrogen absorptin becomes limited. 2. Chlorotic pigments extracted from both IR 667 and Jinhung were compared spectrophotometrically, and found to have different spectral peaks. IR 667 had peak closer to red than Jinhung, indicating the characteristic of the variety. IR 667 was observed to be more sensitive to nitrogen deficiency than Jinhung or the other japonica variety. 3. It was concluded that all the factors limiting nitrogen supply for IR 667 growth, such as low nitrogen application, restriction of root respiration (low temperature, poor drainage, toxic gases or substances in the root zone, etc.) and pest injuries, would result in the appearance of the so-called red discoloration, because of the reduction in nitrogen uptake. Since, the discoloration of IR 667 is varietal characteristic when grown in Korea, control of it may be beneficial cultural practice in increasing grain yield, although the increased succeptibility to pests and a drop in the rate of maturity due to relatively high nitrogen level in the leaves may result in an unexpected drop in yield. It is anticipated that further exploration conducted from practical point of view will establish the relatioknships between the extent of red discoloration, nitrogen availability and grain yield in IR 667.
The effects of air temperature on the grain filling stage of indica-japonica crosses were studied in artificial temperature-controlled cabinets, using Indica-Japonica crosses (Suweon 264, Suweon 258 and Milyang 29), Indica IR 36 and Lengkwang) and a Japonica rice (Jinheung). The optimum temperature to achieve maximum grain weight during the grain-filling stage was $26/18^{\circ}C$ for all varieties. Within the temperature range of 13 to $28^{\circ}C$, the grain filling period was shorter as the temperature was increased. At the highest temperature $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ the upper-position grains ("special spikelets") of IR 36 required 13days after flowering to reach the maximum weight, in Jinheung 23 days, in indica-japonica varieties (Suweon 264, Suweon 258, and MiIyang 29) 18 days, and in Lengkwang, 23 days. In the case of Lengkwang, at $32/24, \;29/21^{\circ}C$ and $26/18^{\circ}C$temperature range the upper-position grain also required same 23 days after flowering to reach the maximum weight. At the lowest temperature range of $17/9^{\circ}C$, Jinheung required 68 days and Lengkwang 53 days after flowering to reach maximum grain weight. The whole panicle took 10 to 15 days later than the special spikelets to reach the maximum weight. At lower-than-optimum temperature range $(l7/9^{\circ}C\;and\;20/12^{\circ}C)$, all IR 36 plant died within 15 days after flowering. In the case of indica-japonica varieties all plants died within 15 days only at $17/9^{\circ}C$. There were more chalky grains when the temperature was higher and lower than optimum. The highest and lowest temperature range produced dead rice (black and dark red rice). Lower than optimum temperature ranges $(17/9^{\circ}C\;and\;20/12^{\circ}C)$ affected grain quality (length, width and depth) at these temperature ranges, grains were shorter, narrower, and thinner than grains at the optimum temperature of $26/18^{\circ}C$. With regared and the effects of temperature on frequency of grain weight at grain filling stage of indica variety IR 36, the highest $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ and lowest $(23/15^{\circ}C)$ temperature ranges matched the frequency of grain weight curves. In Japonica variety Jinheung, at the three temperature ranges, that is, lowest $(17/9^{\circ}C)$ highest $(32/24^{\circ}C)$ and optimum $(26/18^{\circ}C)$, the frequency of grain weight curve showed very different patterns, In the case of indica-japonica variety Suweon 258, the frequency of grain weight curve was midway between that of IR 36 and Jinheung. Jinheung.

In order to reduce rice cultivation area in paddy fields and to increase domestic self-sufficiency of imported upland grain, it is necessary to increase double cropping area of upland crops in paddy field in accordance with decrease of rice consumption in Korea. The double cropping of spring potato-summer grain maize can be combined because of enough growing season in the southern plain of Korea. Spring potato, which is profitable, can be planted in the late February and harvested in the late May as the main crop. Subsequent grain maize can be planted in early June and harvested in November (maturity in the early October). Spring potato (variety Soomi) yielded $2,544kg\;10a^{-1}$ (tuber) when planted in late February, 2016. When maize was planted in June as the second cropping crop, though growth of plant decreased much, grain yield decreased slightly compared to normal planting in April or May. There was enough time to dry maize ear in the field after maturity before harvesting, which saved labor and time for grain drying, since there is no autumn planting at the double cropping of spring potato-summer grain maize. When grain maize (variety Gwangpyeongok) was planted in the early June (June $10^{th}$), average grain yield of above $860kg\;10a^{-1}$ over 2 years of 2015 and 2016 was obtained, and the annual total yield (potato tuber + maize grain) of 3,400 kg $10a^{-1}$ was obtained. The result indicates that the double cropping of spring potato-summer maize using paddy fields in southern plain of Korea, could contribute to the self-sufficiency of upland crops through the maximum production.

This study was carried out to develop rice variety integrated with rice bacterial blight resistance gene and to know the information of major agronomic traits of developed variety. Advanced backcross Lines 21 having Xa3 and Xa21 gene cross from japonica cultivar Hwanggeumnuri and indica variety IRBB21. Days after seeding and culm length of ABLs21 were 108 days (Aug. 16) and 76 cm, respectively. Ripened grain rates was 87.4 %, which was similar to the parents. 1000 grain weight of brown rice of ABLs21 was 21.4g, which was lower than the donor parent. Milled rice yield of ABLs21 was 532 kg/10a, which was smaller than recurrent parent and higher than the donor parent. Grain length/width ratio of brown rice was form of japonica with short-ellipse and glossiness of cooked rice has japonica trait. Head rice rate showed a large difference compare to the donor parent and similar to the recurrent parent. ABLs21 would be useful genetic resources for resistance breeding program against bacterial blight.
