Milli-structure components are classified as a component group whose size is between macro and micro scales, that is, about less than 20mm and larger than 1mm. The bending of these components of thin sheets has a typical phenomenon of bulk deformation because of the forming size. The recent trend towards miniaturization causes an increased demand for parts with very small dimensions. The conceptual miniature bending process enables the production of such parts with high productivity and accuracy. The stress values of the flow curve decrease with miniaturization, which means that coarse grained materials show a higher resistance against deformation, when the grain size is in the range of the sheet thickness. In this paper, a new numerical approach is proposed to simulate intergranular milli-structure in forming by the finite element method. The grain element and grain boundary element are introduced to simulate the milli-structure of strip in the bending. The grain element is used to analyze the deformation of individual grain while the grain boundary element is for the investigation on the movement of the grain boundary. Also, the result of the finite element analysis is confirmed by a series of milli-sized forming experiments.
A combined stochastic diffusion and mean-field model is developed for a systematic study of the grain growth in a pure single-phase polycrystalline material. A corresponding Fokker-Planck continuity equation is formulated, and the interplay/competition of stochastic and curvature-driven mechanisms is investigated. Finite difference results show that the stochastic diffusion coefficient has a strong effect on the growth of small grains in the early stage in both two-dimensional columnar and three-dimensional grain systems, and the corresponding growth exponents are ~0.33 and ~0.25, respectively. With the increase in grain size, the deterministic curvature-driven mechanism becomes dominant and the growth exponent is close to 0.5. The transition ranges between these two mechanisms are about 2-26 and 2-15 nm with boundary energy of 0.01-1 J $m^{-2}$ in two- and three-dimensional systems, respectively. The grain size distribution of a three-dimensional system changes dramatically with increasing time, while it changes a little in a two-dimensional system. The grain size distribution from the combined model is consistent with experimental data available.

We developed the breeding materials with diverse grain size and shape in japonica rice. Grain size and shape are important factors affecting consumer preference and choice. However, most of Korean japonica rice cultivars have small, short, and round grain. To diversify the grain size and shape of japonica rice, we conducted the breeding program using donor parents, Jizi1560 and Jizi1581. Jizi1560 and Jizi1581 are japonica germplasm with extremely large grain. Four crosses between the each donor parents and high yielding japonica rice cultivars, Deuraechan and Boramchan, were constructed and then anther culture method was applied. We obtained 290 doubled-haploid (DH) lines with appropriated morphological traits and selected 91 DH lines with diverse grain size and shape. The grain related-traits of the selected DH lines showed a higher diversity when compared with 319 cultivars developed by NICS (264 japonica, 13 black, and 32 Tongil type cultivars). We designated the selected DH lines, four parents, and Daeripbyeo 1, large grain japonica cultivar, as the breeding materials for further analysis. The breeding materials were classified into five groups, A to E, based on the grain-related traits. Group A (including Jizi1581) and Group B (including Daeripbyeo 1) showed similar grain width, whereas Group A exhibited longer grain length and heavier grain weight. Group C (including Deuraechan and Boramchan) showed shorter and rounder grain shape and smaller grain size than any other groups. Group D including solely Jizi1560 had extremely large grain, such as the longest grain length, width, and thickness and heaviest grain weight. Group E including only two DH lines had long and slender grain shape, so that showed the highest ratio of length to width. The grain size and shape of the breeding materials exhibited beyond the characteristics of previously developed Korean japonica cultivars. The breeding materials will be applied in the breeding programs to diversify the grain size and shape of japonica rice.

In this work, an air-bending test using magnesium alloy ZK60 sheet was carried out at the various temperatures from room temperature to $300^{\circ}C$ in order to investigate the effect of grain size on the spring-back characteristic. It was found out from experiments that the amount of spring-back was nearly zero at all temperature range when the specimens with grain sizes of 14.66 and $60.71{\mu}m$ were bent by $90^{\circ}$. On the other hand, the spring-back amount dramatically increased at room temperature and phenomenon of spring-go was observed at high temperature when the specimen with submicro grain size of $0.98{\mu}m$ was bent by $90^{\circ}$. From this kind of different spring-back characteristics according to the grain size, it was confirmed that the grain size of material is one of the important factors which have an effect on the spring-back.

Rice is 34% of the world's population used as a staple food. But the world population is increasing. Food security is not well protected. Improving cultivar development can address food security. Quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping is a statistical analysis using both phenotypic and genotypic dates. The purpose of QTL mapping is to determine a gene. Increasing grain size is a way to increase yield in rice. Grain size-related genes were mapped using CNDH population obtained by cross-breeding Cheongcheong (Indica) and Nagdong (Japonica) through anther culture. Grain harvested from experimental field of Kyungpook National University in Gunwi in 2021. Genes related to grain length were detected between RM5964-RM12285, RM20924-RM20967 in chromosome 1, 7. LOD score is 5.88 and 5.6. Genes related to grain width was detected between RM289-RM18130 in chromosome 5. LOD score is 4.57. Genes related to grain length/width ratio were detected between RM5459-RM3482, RM5699-RM1211 and RM3838-RM3381 in chromosome 1, 2, 5. LOD score is 3.75, 3.14 and 3.41. 4 genes was detected in chromosome 1 and 2 genes was detected in chromosome 2 and 7 genes was detected in chromosome 5. 2 genes related to grain shape and quality were detected. 4 genes related to grain length were detected. 4 genes related to grain size were detected. 1 gene related to grain size and weight was detected. 2 genes related to grain length and weight were detected. By finding the gene related to grain size, it provides food to people threatened by food security and solves the food shortage.
This paper presents a geostatistical methodology to model local uncertainty in spatial estimation of sediment grain size with high-resolution remote sensing imagery. Within a multi-Gaussian framework, the IKONOS imagery is used as local means both to estimate the grain size values and to model local uncertainty at unsample locations. A conditional cumulative distribution function (ccdf) at any locations is defined by mean and variance values which can be estimated by multi-Gaussian kriging with local means. Two ccdf statistics including condition variance and interquartile range are used here as measures of local uncertainty and are compared through a cross validation analysis. In addition to local uncertainty measures, the probabilities of not exceeding or exceeding any grain size value at any locations are retrieved and mapped from the local ccdf models. A case study of Baramarae beach, Korea is carried out to illustrate the potential of geostatistical uncertainty modeling.

Hydraulic conductivity of unconsolidated media can be determined by aquifer tests, laboratory tests and empirical equations based on grain size analysis. Commonly, the different methods give different hydraulic conductivities. Grain size measurements were done to determine hydraulic conductivity, using 184 soil samples collected from eight boreholes in a riverbank filtration area, Daesan-Myeon, Changwon City, Korea, Pumping tests were conducted at the riverbank filtration area. The average hydraulic conductivity by the empirical relations from grain size measurements comes out around $10^{-2}m/s$, 22 to 55 times higher than by the pumping test analyses. The hydraulic conductivity obtained from the empirical equations is interpreted to have a relationship with steady-state condition while that obtained from the pumping tests is interpreted to have a relationship with unsteady-state condition. Thus, hydraulic conductivity obtained from various methods should be critically analyzed for reasonable management of groundwater development.
A finite element analysis is performed to predict the recrystallized volume fraction and the mean grain size in hot compression of Al-5wt%Mg alloy. In the analysis, a modeling equation of flow stress is assumed as a function of strain, strain rate, and temperature. And the influence of above varibles on flow stress is quantified by using Zener-Hollomon Parameter. In the modeling equation, effects of strain hardening and dynamic recrystallization on microstructure of Al-5wt%Mg alloy are investigated. The predicted results of recrystallized volume fraction and mean grain size are in good agreement with those of microstructures obtained from hot compression tests.
The purpose of the present study is to investigate the microstructural effect on the R-curve behavior in three aluminas with different grain size distributions by analyzing the bridging stress distribution. The crack opening displacement (COD) according to the distance behind the stationary crack tip was measured using an in situ SEM fracture method. The measured COD values in the fine-grained alumina agreed well with Wiederhorn's sollution while they deviated from Wiederhorn's solution in the two coarse-grained aluminas because of the increase of the crack closure due to the grain interface bridging in the crack wake. A numerical fitting procedure was conducted by the introduction of the power-law relation and the current theoretical model together with the measured COD's in order to obtain the bridging stress distribution. The results indicated that the bridging stress function and the R-curve computed by the current model were consistent with those computed by the power-law relation providing a reliable evidence for the bridging stress analysis of the current model. The strain-softening exponent in the power-law relation n, was calculated to be in the range from 2 to 3 and was closely related to the grain size distribution. Thus it was concluded from the current theoretical model that the grain size distribution affected greatly the bridging stress distribution thereby resulting in the quantitative analysis of microfracture of polycrystalline aluminas through correlating the local-fracture-cont-rolling microstructure.

PURPOSE. This study aimed to identify the effects of the sintering conditions of dental zirconia on the grain size and translucency. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Ten specimens of each of two commercial brands of zirconia (Lava and KaVo) were made and sintered under five different conditions. Microwave sintering (MS) and conventional sintering (CS) methods were used to fabricate zirconia specimens. The dwelling time was 20 minutes for MS and 20 minutes, 2, 10, and 40 hours for CS. The density and the grain size of the sintered zirconia blocks were measured. Total transmission measurements were taken using a spectrophotometer. Two-way analysis of variance model was used for the analysis and performed at a type-one error rate of 0.05. RESULTS. There was no significant difference in density between brands and sintering conditions. The mean grain size increased according to sintering conditions as follows: MS-20 min, CS-20 min, CS-2 hr, CS-10 hr, and CS-40 hr for both brands. The mean grain size ranged from 347-1,512 nm for Lava and 373-1,481 nm for KaVo. The mean light transmittance values of Lava and KaVo were 28.39-34.48% and 28.09-30.50%, respectively. CONCLUSION. Different sintering conditions resulted in differences in grain size and light transmittance. To obtain more translucent dental zirconia restorations, shorter sintering times should be considered.
