Densification, grain growth, and phase transformation of nanocrystalline ceramic powder were investigated under pressureless sintering, sinter forging, and hot pressing. A constitutive model for densification of nanocrystalline ceramic powder was proposed and implemented into a finite element program (ABAQUS). A grain growth model was also proposed by including the effect of applied stress on grain growth when phase transformation occurs. Finite element results by using the proposed models well predicted densification behavior, deformation, and grain growth of nanocrystalline titania powder during pressureless sintering, sinter forging, and hot pressing.
A metallurgical model for the prediction of prior austenite grain size considering the dissolution kinetics of M$_3$C precipitates at the heat affected zone of SA508-cl.3 was proposed. The isothermal kinetics of grain growth and dissolution were respectively described by well-known equation, $dD/dT=M({\Delta}F_{eff})^M$ and Whelan's analytical model. The isothermal grain growth experiments were carried out for measure the kinetic parameters of grain growth. The precipitates of the base metal and the specimens exposed to thermal cycle were examined by TEM-carbon extraction replica method. The model was assessed by the comparison of BUE simulation experiments and showed good consistencies. However, there was no difference between the model considering and ignoring $M_3C$ precipitates. It seems considered that pinning force exerted by $M_3C$ Precipitates was lower than driving force for grain growth due to large size and small fraction of precipitates, and mobility of grain boundary was low in the lower temperature range.
In order to fabricate complex-shaped polycrystalline ceramics by sintering, organic binders are usually pre-mixed with ceramic powders to enhance the formability during the shape forming process. These organic binders, however, must be eliminated before sintering so as to eliminate the possibilities of poor densification and unusual grain growth during sintering. The present work studies the effect of binder addition on grain growth behavior during sintering of $92(70Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-30PbTiO_3))$-8PbO(mol%) piezoelectric ceramics. The microstructures of the sintered samples were examined for various heating profiles and debinding schedules of the binder removal process. Addition of Polyvinyl butyral(PVB) binder promoted abnormal grain growth especially in incompletely debinded regions. Residual carbon appears to change the grain shape from comer-rounded to faceted and enhance abnormal grain growth.
The densification and grain growth mechanisms of $UO_{2+x}$ in $H_2$ and in $CO_2$ have been investigated. Uranium dioxide powder compacts were sintered at 1$700^{\circ}C$ in $H_2$ or at 110$0^{\circ}C$ in $CO_2$ for various times from 0.5 h to 16 h. The grain size and density of the specimens were measured. From the measured data, the mechanisms of the densification and grain growth were determined by use of available kinetic equations which express the relations between densification and grain growth. In both atmospheres, it has been found that the densification was controlled by the lattice diffusion and the grain growth by the surface diffusion of atoms around pores. It appears that the surface diffusivity as well as the lattice diffusivity increase considerably with the increase in O/U ratio in the specimen.
The sintering behavior and grain growth of ZnO in 99.0mol% ZnO-1.0mol% Bi2O3 which are the basic compositions of ZnO varistor were studied. The microstructrual observation confirmed that the final sintered density was mainly determined at the initial stage of sintering, i.e. grain rearrangement and grain growth which were induced by the penetration of eutectic melts formed at eutectic temperature(74$0^{\circ}C$). But when the liquid penetration was terminated, the grain growth did not promote further densification. Activation energy of the grain growth of ZnO in the system of 99.0mol% ZnO-1.0mol% Bi2O3 was 44.8$\pm$1.8Kcal/mol.
This work describes a method of determining material parameters included in recrystallization and grain growth models. Focus is on the recrystallization and grain growth models of Ni-Fe base superalloy, Alloy 718. High temperature compression tests at different strain, strain rate and temperature conditions were chosen to determine the material parameters of dynamic recrystallization model. The critical strain and dynamically recrystallized grain size and fraction at various process variables were quantitated with the microstructual analysis and strain-stress relationships of the compression tests. Besides, isothermal heat treatments were utilized to fit the material constants included in the grain growth model. Verification of the determined material parameters is carried out by comparing the measured data obtained from other compression tests.

Organic binders are usually pre-mixed with ceramic powders to enhance the formability during the shape forming process. These binders, however, must be eliminated before sintering in order to avoid pore formation and unusual grain growth during sintering. The present work was performed to investigate the effects of residual binder on grain growth behavior during sintering of $Pb(Mg_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})O_3-PbTiO_3$ piezoelectric ceramics. The microstructures of sintered samples were examined for various thermal processes and atmosphere at debinding. Addition of binder seems to promote abnormal grain growth especially in incompletely debinded regions and to make the grain shape change from corner-rounded to faceted.
In the sintering of YIG, abnormal grain growth phenomena were observed. This abnormal grain growth is related to the sintering temperature in this experiment. In the sintering below 1450$^{\circ}C$, the sintered body showed narrow size distribution. However, in the sintering at 1450$^{\circ}C$, a few grains grew rapidly with respect to other grains, and bimodal size distribution was appeared. From the observation of the microstructure, liquid phase was not observed far from the abnormally grown large grains, but only near the large grains. This means that the abnormal grain growth was caused by the nonuniform distribution of liquid phase which promote the grains growth. Because the growth rate of grains near the liquid phase is much higher than that of the other grains, a few grains grow rapidly. This nonuniform distribution of liquid phase was thought to be due to the nonuniform mixing of the calcined powders. This abnormal grain growth was suppressed by enhancement of the compositional uniformity by multiple calcination.
A combined stochastic diffusion and mean-field model is developed for a systematic study of the grain growth in a pure single-phase polycrystalline material. A corresponding Fokker-Planck continuity equation is formulated, and the interplay/competition of stochastic and curvature-driven mechanisms is investigated. Finite difference results show that the stochastic diffusion coefficient has a strong effect on the growth of small grains in the early stage in both two-dimensional columnar and three-dimensional grain systems, and the corresponding growth exponents are ~0.33 and ~0.25, respectively. With the increase in grain size, the deterministic curvature-driven mechanism becomes dominant and the growth exponent is close to 0.5. The transition ranges between these two mechanisms are about 2-26 and 2-15 nm with boundary energy of 0.01-1 J $m^{-2}$ in two- and three-dimensional systems, respectively. The grain size distribution of a three-dimensional system changes dramatically with increasing time, while it changes a little in a two-dimensional system. The grain size distribution from the combined model is consistent with experimental data available.
