Phase separation and low cetane number are the main barriers to the large-scale use of ethanol-diesel blend fuel on small diesel engines. In this paper, an additive package is designed on the basis of the blended fuel properties to overcome these limitations. The experiments show that the solubility of ethanol in diesel is evidently increased by adding $1{\sim}2%$ (in volume) of the additive package and the flammability of ethanol-diesel blend fuel with the additive has reached the neat diesel level under the cold start conditions. Effects of the ethanol content in diesel on fuel economy, combustion characteristics, and emission characteristics are also investigated with the ethanol blend ratios of 10%, 20% and 30%. The increase in ethanol content shows that the specific fuel consumption and the brake thermal efficiency are both gradually increased compared to neat diesel. The soot concentrations of the three blended fuels are all greatly lower than that of neat diesel. $NO_x$ emission is increased with an increase in the engine load and is reduced with the increase in the ethanol blend ratio under a high load.

Polycarbonate (PC) materials having electrical insulation properties, are thermoplastic material and are easily processed, have excellent strength and heat resistance characteristics, and also have transparent and hard characteristics. In this study, we tried to derive the ε-N curve of strain-life, which shows the relationship between the strain characteristics and the life of the material when repeated impact loads are applied to the PC plastic material. As the impact load increased to 3.0kg, 4.0kg, 5.0kg, and 6.0kg, the strain also increased linearly to 0.033, 0.041, 0.046, and 0.055. At 3.0kg of mass impact, the test piece broke with 12000 impact cycles, 8400 times at 3.5kg, 7400 times at 4.0kg, 6600 times at 4.5kg, 4700 times at 5.0kg, 3000 times at 5.5kg, and 1000 times at 6.0kg. The number of fractures exponentially decreased as the load gradually increased. Using these results, an ε-N curve for PC plastic was derived.
The electric facilities for subway stations require reliable and safe electricity in spite of their load increases rapidly. Nevertheless, Korea Electrical Safety Corporation reports that the accidents of independent electric facilities increased greatly from 4,632 cases in 1998 to 6,024 in 1999 and 6,776 cases in 2000, while the ratio of the accidents related with transformers grew gradually. As it is, it is deemed very important to minimize the spreading effects of the electric system accidents and thereby, enhance reliability of the electric supply as well as its safety. According to the fact that the electric facilities for subway stations are important for the public safety and conveniences, it should be careful to set their capacity instead of simply applying the general capacity standard to them, and thereby, improve their economy as well as prevent their accidents. With such a basic conception in mind, this study is aimed at analyzing the characteristics of the electric load in the subway stations and thereupon, suggesting some guidelines for setting of the electric facility capacity for subway stations in terms of optimal operation and safety.

Since the allowable bearing capacities of piles in weathered/fractured rock are mainly governed by settlement, the load-displacement behavior of the rock socketed pile should be well known. To predict pile head settlement at the design stage, the exact understanding of the load-transfer mechanisms is essential. Therefore, in this research, the load-transfer mechanisms of drilled shaft socketed into weathered rock was investigated. For that, 5 cast-in-place concrete piles with diameters of 1,000 mm were socketed into weathered gneiss. The static axial load tests and the load-transfer measurements were performed to examine the axial resistant behavior of the piles. A comprehensive field/laboratory testing program on weathered rock at the field test sites was also performed to describe the in situ rock mass conditions quantitatively. And then, the effect of rock mass condition on the load transfer mechanism was investigated. The side shear resistance of the pile in moderately weathered rock reached to yielding point at a few millimeter displacements, and after that, the rate of resistance increment dramatically decreased. However, that in the highly /completely weathered rock did not show the obvious yielding point, and gradually increased showing the hyperbolic pattern until with the relatively high displacement (>10 mm). The end bearing-displacement curves showed linear increase at least until with the base displacement of approximately 10 mm, regardless rock mass conditions.
This paper presents the results of an analytical study to evaluate the inelastic seismic response characteristics of multistory building structures, the effects of gravity load on the seismic responses and its implications on the earthquake resistant design. Static analyses for incremental lateral force and nonlinear dynamic analyses for earthquake motions were performed to evaluate the seismic response of example multistory building structures. Most of considerations are placed on the distribution of inelastic responses over the height of the structure. When an earthquake occurs, bending moment demand is increased considerably from the top to the bottom of multistory structures, so that differences between bending moment demands and supplies are greater in lower floos of multistory structures. As a result, for building structures designed by the current earthquake resistant design procedure, inelastic deformations for earthquake ground motions do not distribute uniformly over the height of structures and those are induced mainly in bottom floors. In addition, gravity load considerded in design procedure tends to cause much larger damages in lower floors. From the point of view of seismic responses, gravity load affects the initial yield time of griders in earlier stage of strong earthquakes and results in different inelastic responses among the plastic hinges that form in the girders of a same floor. However, gravity load moments at beam ends are gradually reduced and finally fully relaxed after a structure experiences some inelastic excursions as a ground motion is getting stronger. Reduction of gravity load moment results in much increased structural damages in lower floors building structures. The implications of the effects of gravity load for seismic design of multistory building structures are to reduce the contributions of gravity load and to increased those of seismic load in determination of flexual strength for girders and columns.
Sliding wear mechanism of a high nitrogen austenitic 18Cr-18Mn-2Mo-0.9N steel has been investigated. Dry sliding wear tests of the steel were carried out at various loads of IN-10N under a constant sliding speed condition of 0.15m/s against AISI 52100 bearing steel balls. Solution ($1050^{\circ}C$) and isothermal aging ($900^{\circ}C$) heat treatments were performed on the steel and the effect of the heat treatments on the wear was investigated. Wear rates of the solution-treated steel specimen remained low until 5N load, and then increased abruptly at loads above 5N. The rates of isothermally aged specimens were low and increased gradually with the applied load. Worn surfaces, their cross sections, and wear debris of the steel specimens were examined with a scanning electron microscopy. Phases of the heat-treated specimen and the wear debris were identified using XRD. The transformed phase underneath a sliding track was investigated and analyzed using a TEM. Effects of the phase transformation during the wear and $Cr_{2}N$ precipitates formed during the isothermal aging on the wear of the austenitic steel were discussed.
Objective: To evaluate the biodurability of the covering material in retrievable metallic stents covered with polycarbonate polyurethane. Materials and Methods: Using a peristaltic pump at a constant rate of 1ml/min, bile was recirculated from a reservoir through a long tube containing four stents. Each of these was removed from the system every two weeks and a radial tensile strength test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were performed. Each stent, removed at 2, 4, 6 and 8 weeks, was compared with a control stent not exposed to bile juice. Results: Gross examination showed that stents were intact at 2 weeks, but at 4, 6 and 8 weeks cracks were observed. The size of these increased gradually in accordance with the duration of exposure, and at 8 weeks several large holes in the polyurethane membrane were evident. With regard to radial tensile strength, extension and peak load at break were 84.47% and 10.030 N/mm, 54.90% and 6.769 N/mm, 16.55% and 2.452 N/mm, 11.21% and 1.373 N/mm at 0, 2, 4 and 6 weeks, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy at 2 weeks revealed intermittent pitting and cracking, and examination at 4, 6 and 8 weeks showed that the size of these defects was gradually increasing. Conclusion: When the polyurethane membrane was exposed to bile, biodegradation was first observed at week two and increased gradually according to the duration of exposure.
A series of model tests were performed to investigate the load transfer by soil arching in geosynthetic-reinforced and pile-supported(GRPS) embankment systems. In the model tests, model piles with isolated cap were inserted in the model container and geosynthetics was laid on the pile caps below sand fills. The settlement of soft ground was simulated by rubber form. The loads acting on pile caps and the tensile strain of geosynthetics were monitored by data logging system. At the given interval ratio of pile caps, the efficiency in GRPS embankment systems increased with increasing the height of embankment fills, then gradually converged at constant value. Also, at the given height of embankment fills, the efficiency decreased with increasing the pile spacing. The embankment loads transferred on pile cap by soil arching increased when the geosynthetics installed with piles. This illustrated that reinforcing with the geosynthetics have a good effect to restraint the movement of surrounding soft grounds. The load transfer in GRPS embankment systems was affected by the interval ratio, height of fills, properties of grounds and tensile stiffness and so on.
Recently, railroad construction has been increased all over the world and as the train is getting high-speeded, there has been a need for guaranteed safety, so that a requirement for heath monitoring techniques for destruction that generated by gradually accumulated damages is now increasing. Especially the rail is crucial part that contact with wheel directly and delivers the train's load to a sleeper. It needs a technique that can guarantee a safety by sensing the possible cracks. In this paper, when train's load applied to the rail, strain distribution that introduced to entire length of rail is monitored using optical fibre. Optical fibre is used as a medium for measuring the strain and BOCDA (Brillouin Optical Correlation Domain Analysis) system is organized for measuring the distributed variation that implied to optical fibre. Optical fibre is attached at lower flange where tension is maximized when the load of train applied to the rail and strain gauge is implied together to compare the accuracy of measurement.
On 6 healthy adult males aged 20-30 years, oxygen pulse was observed during carrying sand bags weighing 10, 20 and 30 kg on a level treadmill running with speeds of 3, 4 and 5 km/hr. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Oxygen pulse during load carrying on a level treadmill was proportionately increased with an increase of work load, average oxygen uptake per minute. Regression equation of oxygen pulse (y: $m\iota$/beat) on the average oxygen uptake (x:$\iota$/min) required for each grade of work was expressed as y=3.34x+5.99, $s_{y.x}=0.858$). 2. Oxygen pulse reached the highest value 2-5 minutes after the start of load carrying, and thereafter it decreased gradually to some extend as the load carrying was continued. Rate of decrease in the oxygen pulse was greater in lighter works. 3. In lighter works requiring less than $2.0\iota/min$ of oxygen uptake, no difference in oxygen pulse could be seen between methods of carrying even when the same amount of load was carried. In heavier works requiring more than $2.0\iota/min$ of oxygen uptake, oxygen pulse was larger in case of carrying a load by embrace, in both hands and on head than on back or on shoulder.
