A drum type magnetic separator was designed and optimized by computer simulation. The separator consisted of rotating outer shell of drum, magnetic flux generator drum which was assembled with numbers of disk type magnet holders, and drum axis around which the magnet holders were fixed. NdFeB magnet blocks were inserted into the disks, and the disks were assembled layer by layer along the drum axis. Magnetic circuits of the separator were simulated on the basis of highest magnetic strength, least cost, and high yield of separation by using a Vector Field S/W employing the Opera-2D program. The separator proved a separation yield of 95% in removing fine iron-base particles, and installed at Hot Rolling Mill of Pohang Iron & Steel Co. In Korea.

Three-dimensional (3-D) electromagnetic (EM) modeling algorithm has been developed using finite element method (FEM) to acquire more efficient interpretation techniques of EM data. When FEM based on nodal elements is applied to EM problem, spurious solutions, so called 'vector parasite', are occurred due to the discontinuity of normal electric fields and may lead the completely erroneous results. Among the methods curing the spurious problem, this study adopts vector element of which basis function has the amplitude and direction. To reduce computational cost and required core memory, complex bi-conjugate gradient (CBCG) method is applied to solving complex symmetric matrix of FEM and point Jacobi method is used to accelerate convergence rate. To verify the developed 3-D EM modeling algorithm, its electric and magnetic field for a layered-earth model are compared with those of layered-earth solution. As we expected, the vector based FEM developed in this study does not cause ny vector parasite problem, while conventional nodal based FEM causes lots of errors due to the discontinuity of field variables. For testing the applicability to high frequencies 100 MHz is used as an operating frequency for the layer structure. Modeled fields calculated from developed code are also well matched with the layered-earth ones for a model with dielectric anomaly as well as conductive anomaly. In a vertical electric dipole source case, however, the discontinuity of field variables causes the conventional nodal based FEM to include a lot of errors due to the vector parasite. Even for the case, the vector based FEM gave almost the same results as the layered-earth solution. The magnetic fields induced by a dielectric anomaly at high frequencies show unique behaviors different from those by a conductive anomaly. Since our 3-D EM modeling code can reflect the effect from a dielectric anomaly as well as a conductive anomaly, it may be a groundwork not only to apply high frequency EM method to the field survey but also to analyze the fold data obtained by high frequency EM method.

In this paper, an automatic extraction of the blood flow contour from cardiac MRI is proposed. By using the GVF snake which has wider capture range than the conventional snake, and by automatically generating the initial points along the outside of the contour of the zero GVF field in the edge image of the cardiac MRI, the blood flow contour can be automatically extracted, even when the contours have boundary concavities due to the papillary muscles, without any manual initialization of the experts. Experiments are conducted on the various real cardiac MRIs including noise and papillary muscles, and the proposed method is proved to be efficient in automatic extraction of the blood contours even if they have the boundary concavities.
We present a non-photo realistic pen-ink drawing method for outlining and shading of the input image. Especially, we focus on the detailed illustration of the image of which stroke's direction is important. The pen-ink renderer is an alternative display models user can generate traditional illustration renderings of their photo realistic image. The previously proposed pen drawing methods produce feasible description in general image but it is difficult to express in detail for the sophisticated images that need to consider the direction of stroke for each image region. In order to overcome the disadvantages of the conventional method, a direction vector is extracted from a tensor field and we determine a stroke's direction in consideration of not only an edge area but also a gradient of a surrounding area in the image. For more detailed description for the sophisticated image, we generate white noises based on the light and shade of the input image and determine the direction and length of the stroke by using the tensor field for each generated white noise. The proposed method works particularly well for traditional architectural images where the direction and detailed description of the pen is important.

As one of the essential resources in the agricultural process, soil moisture has been carefully managed by predicting future changes and deficits. In recent years, statistics and machine learning based approach to predict soil moisture has been preferred in academia for its generalizability and ease of use in the field. However, little is known that machine learning based soil moisture prediction is applicable in the situation of South Korea. In this sense, this paper aims to examine 1) whether publicly available weather data generated in South Korea has sufficient quality to predict soil moisture, 2) which machine learning algorithm would perform best in the situation of South Korea, and 3) whether a single machine learning model could be generally applicable in various regions. We used various machine learning methods such as Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest (RF), Extremely Randomized Trees (ET), Gradient Boosting Machines (GBM), and Deep Feedforward Network (DFN) to predict future soil moisture in Andong, Boseong, Cheolwon, Suncheon region with open source weather data. As a result, GBM model showed the lowest prediction error in every data set we used (R squared: 0.96, RMSE: 1.8). Furthermore, GBM showed the lowest variance of prediction error between regions which indicates it has the highest generalizability.
With the improvement of computer hardware, GPUs(Graphics Processor Units) have tremendous memory bandwidth and computation power. This leads GPUs to use in general purpose computation. Especially, GPU implementation of compute-intensive physics based simulations is actively studied. In the solution of differential equations which are base of physics simulations, tridiagonal matrix systems occur repeatedly by finite-difference approximation. From the point of view of physics based simulations, fast solution of tridiagonal matrix system is important research field. We propose a fast GPU implementation for the solution of tridiagonal matrix systems. In this paper, we implement the cyclic reduction(also known as odd-even reduction) algorithm which is a popular choice for vector processors. We obtained a considerable performance improvement for solving tridiagonal matrix systems over Thomas method and conjugate gradient method. Thomas method is well known as a method for solving tridiagonal matrix systems on CPU and conjugate gradient method has shown good results on GPU. We experimented our proposed method by applying it to heat conduction, advection-diffusion, and shallow water simulations. The results of these simulations have shown a remarkable performance of over 35 frame-per-second on the 1024x1024 grid.
Without scrutinizing reflection, the plasma comprising a coronal loop is usually regarded to reside within a flux rope. This picture seems to have been adopted from laboratory plasma pinches, in which a plasma of high density and pressure is confined in the vicinity of the flux rope axis by magnetic tension and magnetic pressure of the concave inward magnetic field. Such a configuration, in which the plasma pressure gradient and the field line curvature vector are almost parallel, however, is known to be vulnerable to ballooning instabilities (to which belong interchange instabilities as a subset). In coronal loops, however, ideal MHD (magnetohydrodynamic) ballooning instabilities are impeded by a very small field line curvature and the line-tying condition. We, therefore, focus on non-ideal (resistive) effects in this study. The footpoints of coronal loops are constantly under random motions of convective scales, which twist individual loop strands quite randomly. The loop strands with the axial current of the same direction tend to coalesce by magnetic reconnection. In this reconnection process, the plasma in the loop system is redistributed in such a way that a smaller potential energy of the system is attained. We have performed numerical MHD simulations to investigate the plasma redistribution in coalescence of many small flux ropes. Our results clearly show that the redistributed plasma is more accumulated between flux ropes rather than near the magnetic axes of flux ropes. The Joule heating, however, creates a different temperature distribution than the density distribution. Our study may give a hint of which part of magnetic field we are looking to in an observation.

Blur is an important type of image distortion. How to evaluate the quality of blurred image accurately and efficiently is a research hotspot in the field of image processing in recent years. Inspired by the multi-scale perceptual characteristics of the human visual system (HVS), this paper presents a no-reference image blur/sharpness assessment method based on multi-scale local features in the spatial domain. First, considering various content has different sensitivity to blur distortion, the image is divided into smooth, edge, and texture regions in blocks. Then, the Gaussian scale space of the image is constructed, and the categorized contrast features between the original image and the Gaussian scale space images are calculated to express the blur degree of different image contents. To simulate the impact of viewing distance on blur distortion, the distribution characteristics of local maximum gradient of multi-resolution images were also calculated in the spatial domain. Finally, the image blur assessment model is obtained by fusing all features and learning the mapping from features to quality scores by support vector regression (SVR). Performance of the proposed method is evaluated on four synthetically blurred databases and one real blurred database. The experimental results demonstrate that our method can produce quality scores more consistent with subjective evaluations than other methods, especially for real burred images.

This article suggests the machine learning model, i.e., classifier, for predicting the production quality of free-machining 303-series stainless steel(STS303) small rolling wire rods according to the operating condition of the manufacturing process. For the development of the classifier, manufacturing data for 37 operating variables were collected from the manufacturing execution system(MES) of Company S, and the 12 types of derived variables were generated based on literature review and interviews with field experts. This research was performed with data preprocessing, exploratory data analysis, feature selection, machine learning modeling, and the evaluation of alternative models. In the preprocessing stage, missing values and outliers are removed, and oversampling using SMOTE(Synthetic oversampling technique) to resolve data imbalance. Features are selected by variable importance of LASSO(Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator) regression, extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost), and random forest models. Finally, logistic regression, support vector machine(SVM), random forest, and XGBoost are developed as a classifier to predict the adequate or defective products with new operating conditions. The optimal hyper-parameters for each model are investigated by the grid search and random search methods based on k-fold cross-validation. As a result of the experiment, XGBoost showed relatively high predictive performance compared to other models with an accuracy of 0.9929, specificity of 0.9372, F1-score of 0.9963, and logarithmic loss of 0.0209. The classifier developed in this study is expected to improve productivity by enabling effective management of the manufacturing process for the STS303 small rolling wire rods.

This paper proposes detection of view reversal in a stereo video using depth map and motion vector information. We obtain a depth map by using a stereo matching and divide the input image into foreground and background. Next, we obtain a motion vector field by using a motion estimation. In general, an occluded region is in background when foreground goes toward the adjacent background or the background goes toward the adjacent foreground. But, we will face with the change of foreground and background because their depths also change when view reversal occurs. Therefore, we can detect the view reversal in stereo videos by using the observation that the foreground goes toward the adjacent background or the background goes toward the adjacent foreground. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves good detection rate when the background region is sufficiently occluded by the moving foreground.
