  • JPEG-LS is an international standard for lossless or near-lossless image-compression algorithms. In this paper, a simple method is proposed to improve the performance of the lossless JPEG-LS algorithm. With respect to JPEG-LS and its supplementary explanation, Golomb-Rice (GR) coding is mainly used for entropy coding, but it is not used for long codewords. The proposed method replaces a set of long codewords with a set of shorter location map information. This paper shows how efficiently the location map guarantees reversibility and enhances the compression rate in terms of performance. Experiments have also been conducted to verify the efficiency of the proposed method.

  • This paper proposes a novel algorithm for hybrid lossless audio coding, which employs integer discrete cosine transform. The proposed algorithm divides the input signal into frames of a proper length, decorrelates the framed data using the integer DCT and finally entropy-codes the frame data. In particular, the adaptive Golomb-Rice coding method used for the entropy coding selects an optimal option which gives the best compression efficiency. Since the proposed algorithm uses integer operations, it significantly improves the computation speed in comparison with an algorithm using real or floating-point operations. When the coding algorithm is implemented in hardware, the system complexity as well as the power consumption is remarkably reduced. Finally, because each frame is independently coded and is byte-aligned with respect to the frame header, it is convenient to move, search, and edit the coded data.

  • This paper porposes and efficient coding scheme for remote medical communication systems, or“telemedicine systems”. These systems require a technique which is able to transfer large volume of data such as X-ray images effectively. We have already developed a hierarchical image coding and transmission scheme (HITS), which achieves an efficient transmission of medical images simply[1]. In this paper, a new coding scheme for HITS is proposed, which used hierarchical context modeling for the purpose of improving the coding efficiency. The hierarchical context modeling divides wavelet coefficients into several sets by the value of a correspondent coefficient in their higher class, or“a parent”, optimizes a Golomb-Rice (GR) code parameter in each set, and then encodes the coefficients with the parameter. Computer simulation shows that the proposed scheme is effective with simple implementation. This is due to fact that a wavelet coefficient has dependence on its parent. As a result, high speed data transmission is achieved even if the telemedicine system consists of simple personal computers.

  • Design of a linear predictor and matching of an entropy coder is the art of lossless audio coding. In this paper, we use the covariance method and the Choleskey decomposition for calculating linear prediction coefficients instead of the autocorreation method and the Levinson-Durbin recursion. These results are compared to the polynomial predictor. Both of them, the predictor which has small prediction error is selected. For the entropy coding, we use the Golomb-Rice coder using the block-based parameter estimation method and the sequential adaptation method with LOCO-land RLGR. The proposed predictor and the block-based parameter estimation have $2.2879%{\sim}0.3413%$ improved compression ratios compared to FLAC lossless audio coder which use the autocorrelation method and the Levinson-Durbin recursion. The proposed predictor and the LOCO-I adaptation method could improved by $2.2879%{\sim}0.3413%$. But the proposed predictor and the RLGR adaptation method got better results with specific signals.

  • Entropy coders as a noiseless compression method are widely used as end-point compression for images so there have been many contributions to increase of entropy coder performance and to reduction of entropy coder complexity. In this paper, we propose some entropy coders based on binary forward classification (BFC). BFC requires overhead of classification but there is no change between the amount of input information and that of classified output information, which we prove this property in this paper. And using the proved property, we propose entropy coders which are Golomb-Rice coder after BFC (BFC+GR) and arithmetic coder with BFC(BFC+A). The proposed entropy decoders do not have further complexity Son BFC. Simulation results also show better performance than other entropy coders which have similar complexity to proposed coders.

  • In this paper, we propose a new intra mode coding method using the candidate mode table. In the conventional HEVC, if the predicted most probable mode (MPM) is not same with the current prediction mode, the current prediction mode is encoded using the fixed length code (FLC). However, since a large number of modes are used in HEVC, the codeword length of FLC gets longer. In this paper, we generate the candidate mode table from neighboring blocks and encode the obtained intra mode index using Golomb-Rice code instead of FLC, when the predicted MPM is not identical to the current mode. From the experiment, we verified that the proposed method reduces the BD-rate by 0.5% on average, compared to the HEVC intra mode coding method.

  • This study addresses a low complexity and lossless frame memory compression algorithm based on block-buffer structure for efficient high resolution video processing. Our study utilizes the block-based MHT (modified Hadamard transform) for spatial decorrelation and AGR (adaptive Golomb-Rice) coding as an entropy encoding stage to achieve lossless image compression with low complexity and efficient hardware implementation. The MHT contains only adders and 1-bit shift operators. As a result of AGR not requiring additional memory space and memory access operations, AGR is effective for low complexity development. Comprehensive experiments and computational complexity analysis demonstrate that the proposed algorithm accomplishes superior compression performance relative to existing methods, and can be applied to hardware devices without image quality degradation as well as negligible modification of the existing codec structure. Moreover, the proposed method does not require the memory access operation, and thus it can reduce costs for hardware implementation and can be useful for processing high resolution video over Full HD.

  • This paper proposes a novel lossless image compression scheme composed of direction-adaptive prediction and context-based entropy coding. In the prediction stage, we analyze the directional property with respect to the current coding pixel and select an appropriate prediction pixel. In order to further reduce the prediction error, we propose a prediction error compensation technique based on the context model defined by the activities and directional properties of neighboring pixels. The proposed scheme applies a context-based Golomb-Rice coding as the entropy coding since the coding efficiency can be improved by using the conditional entropy from the viewpoint of the information theory. Experimental results indicate that the proposed lossless image compression scheme outperforms the low complexity and high efficient JPEG-LS in terms of the coding efficiency by 1.3% on average for various test images, specifically for the images with a remarkable direction the proposed scheme shows better results.

  • This paper proposes hardware architecture of HEVC (high efficiency video coding) CABAC (context-based adaptive binary arithmetic coding) binarizer. The proposed binarizer was designed and implemented as an independent module that can be integrated into HEVC CABAC encoder. It generates each bin string of each syntax element in a single cycle. It consists of controller module, TU (truncated unary binarization) module, TR (truncated Rice binarization) module, FL (fixed length binarization) module, EGK (k-th order exp-Golomb coding) module, CALR (coeff_abs_level_remaining) module, QP Delta (cu_qp_delta_abs) module, Intra Pred (intra_chroma_pred_mode) module, Inter Pred (inter_pred_idc) module, and Part Mode (part_mode) module. The proposed binarizer was designed in Verilog HDL, and it was implemented in 45 nm technology. Its operating speed, gate count, and power consumption are 200 MHz, 1,678 gates, and 50 uW, respectively.
