The tribological characteristics of dental metal alloys and zirconia were studied by carrying out a friction and wear performance test. In this study, a pin-on-disk-type tester was used and dead weight was employed as the normal load applied to the test specimen. The friction coefficient of dental metal alloys was investigated in terms of their weight and sliding velocity. Microscopic observations were carried out on worn surfaces of specimens. The results indicated that among all metal alloys, Super-A had the highest friction coefficient. Super-A had the lowest amount of wear among all metal alloys, and the amount of wear increased in the following order: Crown & Bridge, Porcelain, and Partial. Crown & Bridge had the best friction coefficient, but the hardness of Crown & Bridge was lower than that of Porcelain and Partial. Experimental measurement results indicated that the disk weight before and after the experiment was the same.
In order to investigate the internal adaptability and cytotoxicity for porcelain fused to metal Ni-Cr alloy, two commercial alloys (Generic Gold-R alloy, Aalba Dent- Valloy)were employed and compared with new developed beryllium free Ni-Cr alloy (KIST-K alloy). After cementation of each crown to abutment die before and after ceramic bonding respectively, dies were mounted to epoxy resin and the internal space was measured between crown and die of each point on sagittal section. The results were as follows: 1) The results show that the space between the crown and the die was largest at the incisal edge, followed by the shoulder or the bevel and chamfer. The least was to be in the axial surface. 2) There were no significant difference in the adaptability of the compared alloys. 3) On day 2 of the experiment the cell multiplication was slightly inhibited by R and K alloys. However, observations taken at day 4 and 7 showed normal cell multiplication process compared to control group. 4) Alloy V exhibited the most severe cell toxicity among the alloys tested on day 2. By day 4 and 7 it showed a decrease level in toxicity, however it did not exhibit normal cell growth as compared to control group.
A total of 200 patients, ranging in age from 20 to 60 years, were selected for the study. Each had at least one tooth which was restored with complete cast gold crown and a nonrestored contralateral tooth with no clinical evidence of caries and periodontal disease. The gingival tissues adjacent to the crowned and nonrestored teeth were examined to determine the evaluation of the severity of inflammation and probed to determine individual pocket depth. The findings are listed here. 1. The average sulcus bleeding index of the gingival tissues adjacent to crowned teeth was 1.99. The average sulcus bleeding index of the gingival tissues adjacent to nonrestored teeth was 0.67. 2. The average gingival sulcus depth adjacent to crowned teeth was 2.19mm. The average gingival sulcus depth adjacent to non restored teeth was 1.68mm. 3. No difference could be found between the average gingival sulcus bleeding index and average gingival sulcus depth of male and those of female. 4. The difference between sulcus bleeding index of the gingival tissues adjacent to crowned teeth and sulcus bleeding index of the gingival tissues adjacent to nonrestored teeth increased with increased age of the cast crown.
A surface plasmon resonance (SPR) imaging system was constructed and used to detect the hexahistidine-ubiquitin-tagged human parathyroid hormone fragment (His$\sub$6/-Ub-hPTHF(1-34)) expressed in Escherichia coli. The hexahistidine-specific antibody was immobilized on a thin gold film coated with ProLinker$\^$TM/ B, a novel calixcrown derivative with a bifunctional coupling property that permits efficient immobilizaton of capture proteins on solid matrices. The soluble and insoluble fractions of an E. coli cell lysate were spotted onto the antibody-coated gold chip, which was then washed with buffer (pH 7.4) solution and dried. SPR imaging measurements were carried out to detect the expressed His$\sub$6/-Ub-hPTHF(1-34). There was no discernible protein image in the uninduced cell lysate, indicating that non-specific binding of contaminant proteins did not occur on the gold chip surface. It is expected that the approach used here to detect affinity-tagged recombinant proteins using an SPR imaging technique could be used as a powerful tool for the analyses of a number of proteins in a high-throughput mode.
Dental caries, one of the most frequent dental disease, become larger because it can be thought as a simple disease. Further more, it can progress to unexpected root canal therapy with fabrication of crown that needs reduction of tooth structure. Base is required in a large caries and ZOE, ZPC, glass ionomer are used frequently as base material. They, with restorative material, can affect the longevity of the restoration. In this study, we assume that the mandibular 1st molar has deep class I cavity. So, installing the 3 base material, 3 kinds of fillings were restored over the base as follows; 1) amalgam only, 2) amalgam with ZPC, 3) amalgam with ZOE, 4) amalgam with GI cement, 5) gold inlay with ZPC, 6) gold inlay with GI cement, 7) composite resin only, 8) composite resin with GI cement. After develop the 3-dimensional model for finite element analysis, we observe the distribution of stress and temperature with force of 500N to apical direction at 3 point on occlusal surface and temperature of 55 degree, 15 degree on entire surface. The analyzed results were as follow : 1. Principal stress produced at the interface of base, dentin, cavity wall was smallest in case of using GI cement as base material under the amalgam. 2. Principal stress produced at the interface of base, dentin, cavity wall was smaller in case of using GI cement as a base material than ZPC under gold inlay. 3. Composite resin-filled tooth showed stress distributed over entire tooth structure. In other words, there was little concentration of stress. 4. ZOE was the most effective base material against hot stimuli under the amalgam and GI cement was the next. In case of gold inlay, GI cement was more effective than ZPC. 5. Composite resin has the small coefficient of thermal conductivity. So, composite resin filling is the most effective insulating material.

The dental structure substituted by restorative materials may produce discomfort resulting from hot or cold stimuli. To investigate the effects of this stimuli on the human teeth, thermal analysis was carried out by calculation of general heat conduction equation in a modeled tooth using numerical method. The method has been applied to axisymmetric and two-dimensional model, analyzing the effects of constant temperature $4^{\circ}C\;and\;60^{\circ}C$. That thermal shock was provided for 2 seconds and 4 seconds, respectively and recovered to normal condition of $20^{\circ}C$ until 10 seconds. The thermal behavior of tooth covered with a crown of gold or stainless steel was compared with that of tooth without crown. At the same time, the effects of restorative materials(amalgam, gold and zinc oxide-eugenol(ZOE)) on the temperature of PDJ(pulpo-dentinal junction) has been studied. The geometry used for thermal analysis so far has been limited to two-dimensional as well as axisymmetric tooth models. But the general restorative tooth forms a cross shaped cavity which is no longer two-dimensional and axisymmetric. Therefore, in this study, the three-dimensional model was developed to investigate the effect of shape and size of cavity. This three-dimensional model might be used for further research to investigate the effects of restorative materials and cavity design on the thermal behavior of the real shaped tooth. The results were as follows; 1. When cold temperature of $4^{\circ}C$ was applied to the surface of the restored teeth with amalgam for 2 seconds and recovered to ambient temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, the PDJ temperature decreased rapidly to $29^{\circ}C$ until 3 seconds and reached to $25^{\circ}C$ after 9 seconds. This temperature decreased rather slowly with stainless steel crown, but kept similar temperature within $1^{\circ}C$ differences. Using the gold as a restorative material, the PDJ temperature decreased very fast due to the high thermal conductivity and reached near to $25^{\circ}C$ but the temperature after 9 seconds was similar to that in the teeth without crown. The effects of coldness could be attenuated with the ZOE situated under the cavity. The low thermal conductivity caused a delay in temperature decrease and keeps $4^{\circ}C$ higher than the temperature of other conditions after 9 seconds. 2. The elapse time of cold stimuli was increased also until 4 seconds and recovered to $20^{\circ}C$ after 4 seconds to 9 seconds. The temperature after 9 seconds was about $2-3^{\circ}C$ lower than the temperature of 2 seconds stimuli, but in case of gold restoration, the high thermal conductivity of gold caused the minimum temperature of $21^{\circ}C$ after 5 seconds and got warm to $23^{\circ}C$ after 9 seconds. 3. The effects of hot stimuli was also investigated with the temperature of $60^{\circ}C$. For 2 seconds stimuli, the temperature increased to $40^{\circ}C$ from the initial temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ after 3 seconds of stimuli and decreased to $30^{\circ}C$ after 9 seconds in the teeth without crown. This temperature was sensitive to surface temperature in the teeth with gold restoration. It increased rapidly to $41^{\circ}C$ from the initial temperature of $35^{\circ}C$ after 2 seconds and decreased to $28^{\circ}C$ after 9 seconds, which showed $13^{\circ}C$ temperature variations for 9 seconds upon the surface temperature. This temperature variations were only in the range of $5^{\circ}C$ by using ZOE in the bottom of cavity and showed maximum temperature of $37^{\circ}C$ after 3 seconds of stimuli.
Purpose: The aim of this research was to establish the effect and variation in differing convergence angle and length of abutment on the retention of full veneer casted gold crown. Materials and methods: Two different length,5 mm and 10 mm in height with convergence angles of 5, 10, 15 and 25 degrees crowns were fabricated. Cementation was done using cements; zinc phosphate cement (Fleck's zinc phosphate cement), resin-modified glass ionomer cement (Vitremer) and resin cement (Panavia 21). These were tested for tensile force at the point of separation by using Instron Universal Testing Machine. Statistical analysis was done by SAS 6.04 package. Results: In all cements the mean retention decreased with significant difference on increase of convergence angle (P<.05). Increase in every 5 degree-convergence angel the retention rate decreased with resin-modified glass ionomer cement of 15.9% and resin cement of 14.8%. With zinc phosphate cement, there was largest decreasing rate of mean retention of 25.5% between convergence angles from 5 degree to 10 degree. When the crown length increased from 5 mm to 10 mm, the retention increased with the significant difference in the same convergence angle and in all types of cement used (P<.05). Conclusion: The retention was strongly dependent on geometric factors of abutment. Much care is required in choosing cements for an optimal retention in abutments with different convergence angles and crown lengths.

A 9-year old boy visited Department of Pediatric dentistry, Chonbuk National University Hospital due to unstable occlusion. He had permanent 1st molars destructed severely by dental caries and lost vertical stop. He could not occlude in the same position on closing of the jaw since he could not find his centric occlusion. The treatment plan was made, which was oral rehabilitation with crown restorations on permanent 1st molars based on clinical and radiographic examinations and centric relation of the jaw. Treatment plan consisted of endodontic treatment, crown lengthening and restoration of the occlusal vertical dimension (OVD) with gold crown by 3mm-increase of OVD. After endodontic and periodontal treatments, temporary crowns made of acrylic resin were set for assessment of tolerance to an increased OVD. After a month for tolerance, final prosthetics were made and set temporarily. In a month, gold crowns were set finally. Immediately after setting, the patient showed anterior open bite, but at the appointment after 4 months, he showed normal overjet, overbite and stable occlusion.

In case of implant-tooth connected prosthesis, a natural tooth tends to intrude. There are several mechanisms that explain an intrusion phenomenon. So it is reco mmended not to connect an implant with a natural tooth. A 68-year-old female had upper left $2^{nd}$ premolar and $2^{nd}$ molar extracted and underwent implant surgery on the missing area. We made an implant prosthesis and treated upper left $1^{st}$ molar with a gold crown. 2.5 year later, the patient complained about loose proximal contact and food impaction between upper left $1^{st}$ molar and $2^{nd}$ molar. Mesial side of upper left $2^{nd}$ molar implant prosthesis was soldered so that proximal contact became tight again. But after 7 months, about 2 mm intrusion of upper left $1^{st}$ molar occurred, and the patient felt periodontally originated pain on intruded upper left $1^{st}$ molar. After the gold crown on upper left $1^{st}$ molar was removed, extrusion occurred and pain was relived.
Purpose : The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of amount of cantilever in intra-crown according to implant fixture position on mechanical strength of internal conical joint type implant. Materials and Methods : Internal conical joint type implant fixture, abutment screw, abutment was connected and gold alloy prostheses were fabricated and cemented on abutment. For fatigue fracture test, the specimens were loaded to the 350 N, 2,000,000 cycle on 3, 4, 5, and 6 mm off-center of gold alloy prostheses. The fracture pattern of implant component was observed. Results : No fatigue fracture found on 3 and 4 mm group. But initial crack pattern found on 3 specimens of 4 mm group. Fatigue fracture found on all specimens of 5 mm group. But complete fracture was not observed. One specimen of 6 mm group fracture completely. Implant fixture fracture wax not observed. Conclusion : The mechanical failure of implant prostheses increased with the loading area farther from center of implant fixture. To reduce mechanical problem of internal joint type implant, surgical and prosthetic consideration is needed.
