A Study on the Film Performance by Physical Properties of Gelatin(Glue) in Dancheong (젤라틴(아교)의 물성에 따른 단청 도막의 성능비교 연구)

  • This study aims to investigate the film performance by physical properties of glue and gelatin in traditional paint(Dancheong). To do this, homemade, commercial glue and gelatin was selected and evaluated water reaction and weatherproof. The result, the highest gel strength, gelatin was better than acrylic acid ester resin, when compared with hygroscopic property and adhesive property. And that was better than in any others, when compared with water-proofing.

  • Animal glue is a traditional material that was used widely as an adhesive in cultural artifacts, such as Buddhist paintings, dancheong (traditional multicolored paintwork on wooden buildings), mother-of-pearl inlay, and so on. Spectroscopic methods, such as infrared spectroscopy, have been used for the analysis of animal glue. However, such methods do not yield sufficient information about the constituents of the glue. Because pyrolysis/GC/MS analysis is able to estimate the components of a material through the examination of its pyrolyzed products, it is useful for the analysis of polymeric material. In this study, pyrolysis/GC/MS analysis was used to determine the chemical composition of animal glue. The appropriate conditions for analyzing animal glue were established by examining pyrolysis temperature, quantity of the sample, and the repeatability of the method. Some products of pyrolysis were identified. We also analyzed commercial gelatin and animal glue using the established method and found almost no differences in chromatograms among the samples. The results will be used as supporting data to confirm the use of animal glue in cultural artifacts and to replace traditional animal glue by commercial gelatin.

A Study on Adhesion Characteristics and Physical Properties of Animal Glue Added Genipin (제니핀을 첨가한 아교의 접착 특성과 물성 변화 연구)

  • In this study, gelatin binding ability was increased by adding cross linking agent to improve adhesive characteristic of animal glue. Animal glue added genipin measured gel strength and viscosity, the structural analysis, the color retention degree, elution degree, and rupture strength. And the water resistance and ultraviolet light resistance with the addition of genipin were compared. As a result of the study, the gel strength and viscosity increased with the amount of genipin. As a result of the structural analysis, in gelatin, the absorption peak of the triple structure of collagen structurally stabilized was observed. As a result of the color retention degree, the film was observed because of the lowered brightness. The amount of elution glue was increased with addition of genipin at $50^{\circ}C$ distilled water condition and rupture strength has increased with the amount of genipin. In the water resistance and light fastness, there was no appearance before and after deterioration due to the addition of genipin. Based on the results of this study, it confirmed the adhesive characteristics of animal glue added genipin and examined the experimental method applicable for animal glue. After the addition of genipin, flexibility, re-solving, adhesive force, and curing speed, which are unique characteristics of glue, can be improved without disappearing, so it is expected that it will be applicable to production of animal glue and conservation of cultural heritage when homogeneous glue is secured.

CONDITIONS FOR ALASKA POLLACK AND FILE FISH SKIN GLUE PROCESSING AND THE QUALITY OF PRODUCT (명태피 및 말쥐치피를 이용한 피교의 최적가공조건과 품질에 대하여)

  • The purpose of this study is to complish a method of fish glue malting with residual products such as fish head and skin discarded from sea food processing. Using the skins of Alaska pollack and file fish from fillet packers, the optimum conditions of skin glue processing were investigated and physical and chemical properties of the product were also determined. The yields of Alaska pollack, Thelagra calcogramma, skin and file fish, Novodon modestus, skin to the total body weight were $4.6\%\;and\;5.0\%$ respectively. The optimum conditions for a $49.3\%$n yield Alaska pollack skin glue processing were considered the extraction of previously tinted in $0.1\%$ calcium hydroxide solution for 3 hours with the additional water as much as 3 times of sample weight at $70^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours under the controlled pH 5.0. The conditions for file fish skin glue were similar to those of Alaska pollack except the addition of five times of water to the weight of sample skin needed for extraction. The content of crude protein of Alaska pollack and file fish skin glue were $98.0\%\;and\;96.0\%$ respectively. The contents of crude ash and crude lipid were not different from that of chemical grade gelatin. Relative viscosity, melting point, gelation temperature and jelly strength of Alaska pollack skin glue marked 5.84, $21.8^{\circ}C,\;7.1^{\circ}C\;and\;10.0g$ respectively and those of file fish skin glue showed $5.79,\;25.0^{\circ}C,\;7.4^{\circ}C\;and\;11.6g$ respectively.The color and turbidity of Alaska pollack skin glue are slightly superior to those of file fish skin glue. It is supposed that the extract residue of skin glue is valuable for use the animal feeds by the results of amino acid composition. And the ratio of each amino acid content to the total amino acid of Alaska pollack and file fish skin glue is similar to that of chemical grade gelatin.

CONDITIONS FOR CONGER EEL AND HAGFISH SKIN GLUE PROCESSING AND THE QUALITY OF PRODUCT (붕장어피 및 먹장어피를 이용한 피교의 가공조건에 제품의 성상)

  • Using the skins of conger eel, Astroconger myriaster, and hagfish, Eptatretus burzeri, from fillet manufactory, the optimum conditions of skin glue processing were investigated and physical ana chemical properties of the product were also determined. The yields of conger eel and hagfish skin to the total body weight were $10.6\%$ and $11.4\%$, respectively. The optimum processing conditions for conger eel skin glue were the extraction of skins which were previously tinted with $0.3\%$ calcium hydroxide solution for one hour, in water at pH 5.5 and $60^{\circ}C$ for four hours. The additional water was six times sample weight. In case of the hagfish skin glue, the liming time with $0.3\%$ calcium hydroxide solution was suitable for three hours, and the skins were extracted with water as much as nine times sample weight at pH 5.0 and $60^{\circ}C$ for three hours. The contents of crude protein of conger eel and hagfish skin glue were $91.5\%$ and $90.2\%$, respectively. The content of crude lipid was slightly higher than that of chemical grade gelatin. Relative viscosity, melting point, gelation temperature and jelly strength of conger eel skin glue were 13.6, $15.2^{\circ}C$, $6.2^{\circ}C$ and 13.0g respectively and those of hagfish skin glue were 12.9, $14.8^{\circ}C$, $4.3^{\circ}C$ and 23.3g respectively. The turbidity of conger eel skin glue and hagfish skin glue were slightly superior to those of dry glue.

  • Artists have been used animal glues for a long time as binding and sizing materials of paintings in many countries including Korea. Since animal glues as a binding material lose their own adhesive strength by aging, pigment particles or pigment layers are easily detached from painting surface. Restaurators prefer to use animal glues for consolidation of pigment particles or pigment layers because artists use animal glues as a binder for their painting works. It is widely known that animal glues have different characteristics such as viscosity, stability on water etc. But there are still a few requirements to consider their stabilities for the restoration of paintings. Therefore, this study was aimed to evaluate of stability and efficiency of animal glue applications. The efficiency of animal glue application was decreased with increasing the concentration of animal glue solution. This result means the simple tendency, but does not representative data for other animal glues made from same raw materials. In most cases, the surface and mechanical characteristics of animal glues are dependent on some factors, like viscosity and concentration of animal glue solution.

  • In order to improve the usability of glue, a traditional adhesive material, and the gelation process of seaweed extract carrageenan, a liquid adhesive for wood preservation was prepared by mixing the two materials. The prepared wood adhesive was mixed with a 15 wt% aqueous solution of glue, λ-carrageenan, an antibacterial agent, an antifoaming agent, and the maximum adhesive strength of 1.80 Mpa was confirmed. As a result of comparison, the adhesive strength was superior to that of 5 different types of traditional natural adhesive ingredients (aqueous solution) and 1 type of polyvinyl acetate-based adhesive.

A Study on Characteristics of Animal Glue depending on Pretreatment and Evaluation Condition (아교 전처리 및 평가 조건에 따른 특성연구)

  • Animal glue is a natural adhesive made from processed skins or bones of animals. It is widely used in wooden crafts, papercrafts, dancheong painting, and pictures. Accurate evaluation of the quality of animal glues during production and use is difficult because there is no formal method for testing the glue's properties during pretreatment and measurement conditions. Thus, in this study, a series of tests were carried out by changing the conditions of swelling, temperature, and concentration of animal glue and gelatin sold on the market. Twelve types of animal glues were evaluated, having a viscosity range of 12.67 cP to 29.43 cP. The results showed that the physical characteristics of the glues were stable when allowed to swell for six h in distilled water(23℃). When 10%(by weight in distilled water) of the animal glue was measured in the reflective mode of a spectrophotometer, the optical characteristics of the glues were stable. Powdered animal glues have a medium brightness and middle-high chroma. Relative to powdered glues, stick animal glues have a low brightness and a medium chroma. Based on the results of this study, it is expected that the data can be assembled into a form so that animal glue workers can use it as a reference for the preparation of evaluation standards for testing the characteristics of animal glues.

Study on Jeonyak in the Bibliography (문헌에 수록된 전약(煎藥)에 관한 연구)

  • This study was aimed at research on Jeonyak (煎藥) appearing in the bibliography. It was during the Goryeo Dynasty that Jeonyak was first mentioned in literature. At this time, Jeonyak was served for consumption during Palgwanhoe. The ingredients and recipes of Jeonyak were listed for the first time in Suunjapbang, a book written by Kim Yu during the Joseon Dynasty. Since then, they have been found in various books and materials. During the Joseon Dynasty, Jeonyak was made in Neuiwon, a medical administrative organization in the palace, and administered as a seasonal food on Dongji Day in the winter. The king gave various to his guests or subjects as special gifts. As a result, Jeonyak became well known to many people and even to those in foreign countries. Jeonyak is a Korean traditional medicated diet food made from decocted beef-feet, bone stock, and other spices, including jujube paste, honey, ginger, pepper, clove, and cinnamon. Jeonyak has a long 800-year history, and its ingredients and recipes have changed only gradually. Milk was a major ingredient of Jeonyak during the Goryeo Dynasty, but glue and gelatin were added in the Joseon Dynasty. Since then, recipes have mainly used gelatin made from beef-feet, skin, beef-bone, and so on. In conclusion, Jeonyak has an 800-year history as a special medicated diet food (藥膳) served seasonally on Dongji Day in the winter.

Selective Bronchial Occlusion for Treatment of Intractable Pneumothorax with Emphysematous Lung (폐기종과 지속적인 공기누출을 동반한 기흉의 기관지 색전술 - 2례 보고 -)

  • The intractable pneumothorax with continuous air leakage, emphysematous lung and high operative risk treated by selective bronchial occlusion has been seldomly reported abroad. The bronchus responsible for air leakage was occluded with such materials as fibrin glue, gelatin sponge and oxidized regenerated cellulose(surgicel). We performed selective bronchial occlusion by flexible fiberoptic bronchoscopy with gelfoam in two cases. There was no complication after the procedure; therefore, we report the treatment for intractable pneumo- thorax by bronchoscopy with gelfoam packing.
