We use B band CCD images to investigate the surface brightness distributions and dynamical properties of 29 Galactic globular clusters. Model fits suggest that 22 clusters show King type surface brightness profiles, while 7 clusters are characterized by power law cusp profiles. For the King type clusters, concentration parameters $(c=log(r_{t}/r_{c}))$ range from 1.20 to 2.10, and core radii are 0.4 to 1.9 pc. The mean value of power law slopes of 7 cuspy clusters was estimated as ${alpha}=1.011{\pm}0.065$. Total masses of King type globular clusters are in the range of $1.7{ imes}10^4M_{odot}$ to $1.0{\times}106M_{\odot}$ with a mean of $1.7{\times}10^5M_{\odot}$. A significant positive correlation between mass and mass-to-light ratio of King type globular clusters has been confirmed with a Pearson's correlation coefficient r = 0.52 and a confidence level of 99%. Our data also confirm a linear relation between total mass and absolute magnitude of King type globular clusters.
We present the properties of globular cluster systems for 10 early-type galaxies in low density environments obtained using deep images from the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Using the ACS Virgo Cluster Survey as a counterpart in high-density environments, we investigate the role of environment in determining the properties of their globular cluster systems. We detect a strong colour bimodality of globular cluster systems in half of our galaxy sample. It is found that there is a strong correlation between the colour and richness of globular cluster populations and their host galaxy luminosities: the less bright galaxies possess bluer and fewer globular clusters as also seen in rich cluster environments. However, the mean colour of globular clusters in our field sample are slightly bluer than those in cluster environments at a given galaxy luminosity, and the colour of the red population has a steeper slope with absolute luminosity. By employing the YEPS simple stellar population model, the colour offset corresponds to metallicity difference of $\Delta$[F e/H ] ~ 0.15 - 1.20 or an age difference of $\Delta$age ~ 2 Gyr on average, implying that GCs in field galaxies appear to be either less metal-rich or younger than those in cluster galaxies. Although we have found that galaxy environment has a subtle effect on the formation and metal enrichment of GC systems, host galaxy mass is the primary factor that determines the stellar populations of GCs and the galaxy itself.
The $CO_2$ welding with 100% $CO_2$ shielding gas is commonly used because of its cost and efficiency. Arc phenomena of the $CO_2$ welding is influenced by various factors such as chemical compositions of welding wire, shielding gas, welding condition and welding power source etc. In this study, arc phenomena is investigated by using two type of FCW(titania type, semi-metal type). Then, the welding quality and optimum welding condition can be selected. From this study, the following results were obtained; 1) In low current range(140A), FCW up to welding voltage(22V) resulted in a typical short circuit transfer. 2) In high current range(320A), the arc stability in titania FCW of a typical globular transfer is better than that of semi-metal FCW.

M104 (NGC 4594, the Sombrero) is an intriguing disk galaxy classified as an elliptical galaxy nowadays. It hosts a luminous bulge and a massive disk, but it is still mysterious how M104 acquired such peculiar structures. Globular clusters are an useful tracer to investigate the formation history of early-type galaxies. In this study we present a wide field imaging study of the globular clusters in M104. Using wide ($1^{\circ}{\times}1^{\circ}$) and deep ugi images of M104 obtained with the CFHT/MegaCam observations, we detect a large number of globular clusters. The color distribution of these globular clusters shows that there are two subpopulations: a metal-poor system and a metal-rich system. The radial number density of the metal-poor globular clusters shows a long tail reaching R ~ 30' (~ 80 kpc), indicating clearly the existence of a giant metal-poor halo in M104. This result is consistent with the previous studies on the dual halos of massive early-type galaxies. We will discuss implications of these results in relation with the formation history of M104.

M85 is a merger remnant galaxy in the Virgo Cluster, showing complex merging features. Globular clusters in M85 are a good tracer of its merging history. To investigate globular cluster system of M85, we obtain deep and wide field images of M85 in ugi filters covering one square degree using CFHT/MegaCam. We discover about 1,000 globular cluster candidates in these images. The color distribution of the globular cluster candidates within r < 5' from M85 does not show a clear bimodality and blue globular cluster candidates are more than red ones. These features are different from those in massive early-type galaxies. The spatial distribution of the globular cluster candidates is elongated along the faint stellar light of M85. We also investigate the spatial distribution of sub-populations of the globular cluster candidates with different color and brightness and estimate their ages based on their color. We discuss these results in relation with the formation history of M85.
Cores of globular clusters are an ideal place for close encounters between stars. The outcome of tidal capture can be stellar mergers, close binaries between normal stars (W UMa type), cataclysmic variables composed of white dwarf and normal star pairs, or low-mass X-ray binaries consisting of a neutron star and a normal star pairs. Stellar mergers can be the origin of blue stragglers in dense globular clusters although they are hard to observe. Low mass X-ray binaries would eventually become binary pulsars with short pulse periods after the neutron stars accrete sufficient amount of matter from the companion. However, large number of recently discovered, isolated millisecond pulsars (as opposed to binary pulsars) in globular clusters may imply that they do not have to gain angular speeds during the X-ray binary phase. We propose that these isolated millisecond pulsars may have formed through the disruptive encounters, which lead to the formation of accretion disk without Roche lobe filling companion, between a neutron star and a main-sequence star. Based on recently developed multicomponent models for the dynamical evolution of globular clusters, we compute the expected numbers of various systems formed by tidal capture as a function of time.

M85 is a nearby merger remnant galaxy located at the northern part of the Virgo Cluster. Because of its remarkable merging features, it is an interesting object to investigate its formation history. Globular clusters are a great tracer of the formation history of early-type galaxies, so that we study the globular cluster system of M85. It has been already found that there are "intermediate-color" globular clusters as well as blue and red ones based on the photometric survey using CFHT/Megacam. For follow-up research, we obtain the spectra of 21 globular clusters in the central region of M85 using Gemini-N/GMOS. We estimate their ages and metallicities based on the strength of Lick indices. We detect the intermediate-age population (~ 2 Gyr) with solar metallicities, comprising about 50% of the observed globular clusters, as well as old and metal-poor population. It suggests that M85 experienced a major merging event around 2 Gyr ago. We discuss these results regarding to the formation history of M85.
The four dimensional classification of globular dusters with the parameters, Z, Y, age and HB type is presented defining two new parameters. $(B-V)_{1/2}\;and\;S_{3/2}$ which are shown to be tightly correlated with Kinman's spectral types and the helium abundances obtained from the R-method, respectively. The Z- and Y- abundances are derived from $(B-V)_{1/2}\;and\;S_{3/2}$, respectively, and the latter parameters determine the age class of clusters with help of Dickens' HB type, which is a function of Z. Y and age. For the examined forty two globular clusters the computed range at Z and Y are $1.5{\times}10^{-4}{\leq}Z{\leq}4.5{\times}10^{-2}\;and\;0.23<Y{\leq}0.41$. The age difference between the oldest (HB type 1) and the youngest (HB type 7) clusters is roughly estimated to be $2-4{\times}10^9$ years. Using these four parameters the known anomalous C-M diagrams seem to be reasonably interpreted without taking into account some complicate parameters such as unusually overabundant heavy elements, mass loss and mass spread, etc. The four dimensional scheme strongly suggests the slow successive collapses of the proto-Galaxy rather than a single fast collapse, and by this slow collapse model the inversion of chemical abundance gradient in the Galaxy can be explained. It is also shown that the clump position along the RGB near the HB level removes down to the fainter magnitude as the Z(Y)- abundance increases (decreases).
This study was undertaken to understand the formation mechanism of the hard spots in high strength brass. To investigate the behavior of the hard spots in the isothermal liquid state with varying silicon content, the rapidly quenched specimens were obtained by suctioning the melt into the silica tube and water quenching. To examine the growth process of the hard spots with holding time, the unidirectional solidification technique was used. The results of this study are summarized as follows: 1) With the addition of Fe in order to get the effects of grain refinement in high strength brass, the two different type of Fe-rich phases are occurred, which are defined as dendritic and globular phase. The chemical composition of the globular phase was different from that of the dendritic phase in that the globular phase contained Si. 2) With increasing Si content, the Fe-rich phase had a tendency to form globular phase. 3) As the holding time increased in the liquid state, globular was also prone to coalesce. The further growth of globular phase to large size was due to reducing the interfacial energy. 4) The primary phase of copper alloy was nucleated preferentially on the dendritic phase. It was noticeable that the dendritic phase acted as a grain refiner. However, the agglomerate (hard spots) which was composed of the globular phase decreased the mechanical properties of high strength brass. 5) Once the hard spots formed in the high strength brass casting, it was very difficult to remove them. This is due to the fact that their meting temperature is higher than the pouring temperature of high strength brass.
The color distribution functions (CDFs) of globular clusters (GCs) in individual early-type galaxies show great diversity in their morphology. Based on the conventional "linear" relationship between colors and metallicities of GCs, the inferred GC metallicity distribution functions and thus their formation histories should be as diverse as they appear. In contrast, an alternative scenario rooted in the "nonlinear" nature of the color-to-metallicity transformation finds the various CDFs pointing systematically to a simple picture, i.e., such a high degree of variety stems predominately from only one parameter, the mean metallicity of GCs. The simulated CDFs of GCs aimed to reproduce 67 massive early-type galaxies from the ACS Virgo & Fornax Cluster Survey show that over 70% of the CDFs concur fully with the nonlinearity scenario. We discuss our new findings in terms of early-type galaxy formation in the cluster environment.
