  • Mass and radius of a neutron star in low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB) can be estimated simultaneously when the observed light curve and spectrum show the photospheric radius expansion feature. This method has been applied to 4U 1746-37 and the mass and radius were found to be unusually small in comparison with typical neutron stars. We re-estimate the mass and radius of this target by considering that the observed light curve and spectrum can be affected by other X-ray sources because this LMXB belongs to a very crowded globular cluster NGC 6441. The new estimation increases the mass and radius but they do not reach the typical values yet.

  • We present the preliminary results on the formation of star clusters by cloud-cloud collision. For this purpose, we perform sub-parsec scale, radiation-hydrodynamic simulations of giant molecular clouds using a sink particle algorithm. The simulations include photo-ionization, direct radiation pressure, and non-thermal radiation pressure from infrared and Lyman alpha photons. We confirm that radiation feedback from massive stars suppresses accretion onto sink particles. We examine the collision-induced star formation and discuss the possibility on the formation of a globular cluster.

  • To investigate inclusions(oxides) which cause some trouble in the quality of the metal and a steel-making process, samples were manufactured. The molten irons were deoxidized using Al deoxidizer, and the morphology of the deoxidation products and the process of deoxidation were investigated by optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer(EDS). The reactions between Fe melt and Al deoxidizer formed deoxidation product, and those reaction may accelerates the reduction of oxide in Fe melt. According to the results of SEM analysis after deoxidizing treatment, it was found that deoxidation products had spherical cluster shape when 1% Al was added and dendritic shape with $2{\sim}3%$ A1 addition. The deoxidation products were globular, dendritic, polygonal(square) and cluster shape.

  • This is a presentation of the paper published as Kimm et al. 2016, ApJ, 823, 52. We investigate the formation of metal-poor globular clusters (GCs) at the center of two dark matter halos with $Mhalo{\sim}4{\times}107Msun$ at z>10 using cosmological radiation-hydrodynamics simulations. We find that very compact (${\leq}1$ pc) and massive (${\sim}6{\times}105Msun$) clusters form rapidly when pristine gas collapses isothermally with the aid of efficient $Ly{\alpha}$ emission during the transition from molecular-cooling halos to atomic-cooling halos. Because the local free-fall time of dense star-forming gas is very short (${\ll}1Myr$), a large fraction of the collapsed gas is turned into stars before stellar feedback processes blow out the gas and shut down star formation. Although the early stage of star formation is limited to a small region of the central star-forming disk, we find that the disk quickly fragments due to metal enrichment from supernovae. Sub-clusters formed in the fragmented clouds eventually merge with the main cluster at the center. The simulated clusters closely resemble the local GCs in mass and size but show a metallicity spread that is much wider than found in the local GCs. We discuss a role of pre-enrichment by Pop III and II stars as a potential solution to the latter issue. Although not without shortcomings, it is encouraging that a naive blind (not tuned) cosmological simulation presents a possible channel for the formation of at least some massive GCs.

  • The presence of multiple stellar populations is now well established in most globular clusters (GCs) in the Milky Way. The origin of this phenomenon, however, is yet to be understood. In this respect, the study of NGC 2808, an intriguing GC which hosts subpopulations with extreme helium abundances, would help to resolve this problem. In order to investigate chemical abundance patterns among different subpopulations in this GC, we have performed low-resolution spectroscopy for the red-giant-branch (RGB) stars and measured CN & CH bands, and Ca line strength. We have identified at least three subpopulations from the CN abundance distribution. This GC shows CN-CH anti-correlation following the general trend among "normal" GCs. In addition, we have cross-matched our results with the high-resolution data in literature, and found a tight correlation between CN strength and sodium abundance. However, CN is anticorrelated with oxygen abundance, as expected from the well known N(&Na)-O anticorrelation. In this talk, we will discuss the implication of these results.

  • We present a spectroscopic study of the globular clusters (GCs) in the giant elliptical galaxy (gE) M86 in the Virgo galaxy cluster. Using the spectra obtained from the Multi-Object Spectroscopy (MOS) mode of Faint Object Camera and Spectrograph (FOCAS) on the Subaru Telescope, we measured the radial velocities of 25 GCs, the metallicities of 16 GCs, and the ages of 8 GCs in M86. The mean velocity and the vocity dispersion of the GCs are < ${\upsilon}_p$ > = -354 ${\pm}$ 80 km/s and ${\sigma}_p$ = 292 ${\pm}$ 32km/s, respectively. The M86 GC system shows some rotation with a large uncertainty and the velocity dispersion of the blue GC system is 60 km/s larger than that of the red GC system. The mean metallicity and age of M86 GCs are <[Fe/H]> = -1.13 ${\pm}$ 0.47 and = 9.7 ${\pm}$ 4.0 Gyr, respectively. We found one GC younger than 5 Gyr. We discuss the spectroscopic results of the M86 GC system in comparison with the GC systems in other gEs.

  • We have performed a spectroscopic study of globular cluster (GC) system associated with the Virgo cD galaxy M87 using the Subaru/FOCAS MOS mode. We derive ages, metallicities and abundance ratios from the GC spectra using Simple Stellar Population (SSP) models. The metallicity distribution function (MDF) obtained empirically based on Milky Way GCs is consistent with the MDF derived from SSP models. A comparison with a meta-analysis using literature data sample of 15 other GC systems shows good agreement with our results. The properties of GCs acquired from the spectra will be used to test the recent theoretical prediction of a significant inflection along the colour-metallicity relations (Yoon et al. 2006). If confirmed, the non-linearity of the relations would shed new light on the interpretation of the GC colour bimodality. The robustness of our results is being tested against the choice of a SSP model, measurement errors and sample selection towards the goal of better understanding the formation history of GCs and host galaxy.

  • We present a set of fiducial sequences of horizontal-branch stars in bright Galactic globular clusters, which have previously been observed in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). We derive fiducial lines on color-magnitude diagrams in multiple color indices (g - r, g - i, g - z, and u - g), after rejecting foreground and background objects as well as RR Lyrae variables utilizing these color indices. We compare our fiducial sequences with model predictions from Yonsei-Yale evolutionary tracks and BaSel spectral libraries, and find a satisfactory agreement between them in terms of their color-magnitude relations, except in u - g. We also compare theoretical models to color-magnitude diagrams of two open clusters (M67 and NGC 6791). Based on our best available cluster distance and reddening, we find that the mass of red clump (RC) stars in NGC 6791 is about a factor of two smaller than an earlier estimate from the application of asteroseismic scaling relations for solar-like oscillations. The smaller RC mass implies an enhanced mass loss along the red giant branch, which is in accordance with other compelling evidences found in this metal-rich system. Our estimated luminosity of RC stars in NGC 6791 is about 0.2 mag fainter than in earlier investigations based on solar-metallicity calibrations, and results in ~10% reduction in the RC-based distance estimation, when applied to metal-rich systems such as in the Galactic bulge.
