THE BUSINESS STRATEGY INNOVATIONS OF THE TOP DESIGN FIRMS IN GLOBAL DESIGN & ENGINEERING MARKET

  • The dynamic nature of the A/E/C industry, rapidly changing global market environments, and lowest cost competitive bidding make it difficult to survive in global design markets. To understand the global design markets, a case study has been undertaken. The top 150 global design firms represented in the ENR (Engineering News Record) from 1995 to 2003 are classified into three groups for the case study. First group is the firms which advanced in rank from 1995. Second group is the firms which maintained its rank from 1994 until 2003. Third group is the firms which went down in rank from 1995 until 2003. However, finding key factors and changing business strategies of successful top design firms are the fundamental goals in this paper. After examinations of case studies, this paper concludes and suggests that professionalization, M&A strategies, patrons of the government, and academic support are needed to be successful in the global design & engineering industry.

  • 본 연구는 ENR지를 통해 파악할 수 있는 선진 설계회사들이 급변하는 세계 설계 및 엔지니어링 시장에서 환경변화에 어떤 방식으로 대응하여 성공하고 있는지를 파악함으로써 최근 어려움을 겪고 있는 국내 설계 및 엔지니어링 업체들에게 향후 생존과 성장을 위한 시사점을 도출할 목적으로 이루어졌다. 분석결과 순위가 올라가거나 유지한 기업들의 특징은 시장과 상품에 대해 사업구조 전략적 측면에서 전문화를 추구하였으며 M&A나 전략적 제휴를 통하여 급변하는 산업 환경에 능동적으로 적응하였기 때문에 성공한 것으로 나타났다. 국내 엔지니어링 기업이 해외에서 성공하기 위해서는 기업 입장에서 시장과 상품에 대한 전략적 특화가 필요하며 정부는 정책상의 해외진출 전략수립과 지원, 학계와 연구소는 핵심 기술육성을 위한 산 $\cdot$$\cdot$ 연 연구의 활성화가 절실히 필요하다.

Global Construction Competitiveness Evaluation in 2016

  • Korea's domestic construction market and overseas construction order environment are experiencing a decreasing trend, and this trend is expected to continue. Therefore, domestic construction companies are seeking to enter the global construction market. This study analyzes the global construction market and the global competitiveness for global construction companies and provides the results. To this end, this study has developed a model to evaluate the global construction competitiveness level and to evaluated global construction competitiveness in 2016. The evaluation of global construction competitiveness was analyzed based on the competitiveness of construction infrastructure by country, and the evaluation results of competitiveness of construction companies. These assessments were based on 20 detailed international statistics (ENR, Global Insight, Compass, etc.). The evaluation results are as follows. First, in regard to the comprehensive global construction competitiveness by country, America ranked first among 20 countries, followed by China. European countries like Spain, Germany and the Netherlands ranked third to fifth, respectively. Korea ranked sixth, one rank higher than that of the previous year. America and European countries remain strong. Second, in regard to the comprehensive building infrastructure competitiveness by country, America ranked first followed by Germany. Korea ranked twelfth, which is the same rank as that of the previous year. When it comes to stability in the construction market, China ranked first and Korea eighth. For construction systems, Sweden ranked first and Korea thirteenth, and for infrastructure, Japan ranked first and Korea tenth. Third, according to the construction company's capability evaluation by country, America ranked first followed by China. Korea ranked fourth, two ranks higher than that of the previous year because of its building competitiveness (fifth → fourth) and design competitiveness (eleventh → eighth) which has improved. When it comes to building competitiveness, China ranked first and Korea fourth. For design competitiveness, America ranked first and Korea eighth, and for price competitiveness, India ranked first and Korea seventh. However, Korea is still in the middle of the pack rank among the 20 countries considered when it comes to design competitiveness. It is ranked eleventh for design productivity and thirteenth for foreign sales against the total sales (internationalization). Thus, Korea needs to improve technical power and tap into new markets for improved competitiveness, including increased productivity. To do so, more R&D investment is required.

A Study of Global Manufacturing Education and Training for Chinese Company Manager

  • Global economic recession, global market reduction, and the deteriorating economic recession are forcing the industry to reconsider the business plan and strategy related to supply chain regardless of the size of the companies. During the economic recession caused by financial anxiety, development of international collaborative producer is the key theme for a manufacturing industry to get over the situation. Especially, development of high-skilled people who are capable of handling global manufacturing management is the key factor in China which shifted from a world factory to a world market. In this background, we started the international project of global manufacturing education and training for Chinese company managers from 2009. In this paper, based on the research conducted by the universities and companies in China, a design of global manufacturing education and training is proposed. This presented design is based on the theory of Japanese production strategy and investigation of actual conditions for Chinese companies and the research methodology of business management practice with efficiency and productive for international level management organization. The effectiveness of the education design is evaluated by applying the international education and training project of Aoyama Gakuin Human Innovation Consulting Inc. and Vigor Management Technology Association.

Aircraft derivative design optimization considering global sensitivity and uncertainty of analysis models

  • Aircraft manufacturing companies have to consider multiple derivatives to satisfy various market requirements. They modify or extend an existing aircraft to meet new market demands while keeping the development time and cost to a minimum. Many researchers have studied the derivative design process, but these research efforts consider baseline and derivative designs together, while using the whole set of design variables. Therefore, an efficient process that can reduce cost and time for aircraft derivative design is needed. In this research, a more efficient design process is proposed which obtains global changes from local changes in aircraft design in order to develop aircraft derivatives efficiently. Sensitivity analysis was introduced to remove unnecessary design variables that have a low impact on the objective function. This prevented wasting computational effort and time on low priority variables for design requirements and objectives. Additionally, uncertainty from the fidelity of analysis tools was considered in design optimization to increase the probability of optimization results. The Reliability Based Design Optimization (RBDO) and Possibility Based Design Optimization (PBDO) methods were proposed to handle the uncertainty in aircraft conceptual design optimization. In this paper, Collaborative Optimization (CO) based framework with RBDO and PBDO was implemented to consider uncertainty. The proposed method was applied for civil jet aircraft derivative design that increases cruise range and the number of passengers. The proposed process provided deterministic design optimization, RBDO, and PBDO results for given requirements.

Exploring market uncertainty in early ship design

  • To decrease Europe's harmful emissions, the European Union aims to substantially increase its offshore wind energy capacity. To further develop offshore wind energy, investment in ever-larger construction vessels is necessary. However, this market is characterised by seemingly unpredictable growth of market demand, turbine capacity and distance from shore. Currently it is difficult to deal with such market uncertainty within the ship design process. This research aims to develop a method that is able to deal with market uncertainty in early ship design by increasing knowledge when design freedom is still high. The method uses uncertainty modelling prior to the requirement definition stage by performing global research into the market, and during the concept design stage by iteratively co-evolving the vessel design and business case in parallel. The method consists of three parts; simulating an expected market from data, modelling multiple vessel designs, and an uncertainty model that evaluates the performance of the vessels in the market. The case study into offshore wind foundation installation vessels showed that the method can provide valuable insight into the effect of ship parameters like main dimensions, crane size and ship speed on the performance in an uncertain market. These results were used to create a value robust design, which is capable of handling uncertainty without changes to the vessel. The developed method thus provides a way to deal with market uncertainty in the early ship design process.

  • Since 2009 of global financial crisis, shipbuilding industry has undergone hard times seriously. After such a long depression, the latest global shipping market index shows that the economic recovery of global shipbuilding market is underway. Especially, nations with enormous resources are going to increase their productivity or expanding their shipyards to accommodate a large amount of orders expected in the near future. However, few commercial projects have been carried out for the practical shipyard layout designs even though those can be good commercial opportunities for shipbuilding engineers. Shipbuilding starts with a shipyard construction with a large scale investment initially. Shipyard design and the equipment layout problem, which is directly linked to the productivity of ship production, is an important issue in the production planning of mass production of ships. In many cases, shipbuilding yard design has relied on the experience of the internal engineer, resulting in sporadic and poorly organized processes. Consequently, economic losses and the trial and error involved in such a design process are inevitable problems. The starting point of shipyard construction is to design a shipyard layout. Four kinds of engineering parts required for the shipyard layout design and construction. Those are civil engineering, building engineering, utility engineering and production layout engineering. Among these parts, production layout engineering is most important because its result is used as a foundation of the other engineering parts, and also, determines the shipyard capacity in the shipyard lifecycle. In this paper, the background of shipbuilding industry is explained in terms of engineering works for the recognition of the macro trend. Nextly, preliminary design methods and related case study is introduced briefly by referencing the previous research. Lastly, the designed work of layout design is validated using the computer simulation technology.

국내 토목산업의 설계-시공 균형발전 방안 도출에 관한 연구 (Strategies for Balancing the Competitiveness between Engineering and Construction in the Korean Infrastructure Industry)

  • 최근 해외건설시장에서는 산업설비 분야를 중심으로 기획, 설계, 구매조달, 시공을 통합하는 EPC(Engineering, Procurement, & Construction) 형태의 발주물량이 증가하고 있으며, 토목산업 분야에서도 점차 Design-Build 발주사례가 증가하고 있다. 이러한 발주환경의 변화에 따라 프로젝트종합관리, 기본설계 등 건설엔지니어링의 중요성이 대두되고 있으나, 아직까지 국내 건설산업은 시공 위주의 산업구조에서 벗어나지 못하고 있다. 따라서 본 연구는 국내 토목산업의 엔지니어링 역량을 제고하고, 장기적으로는 설계-시공 균형발전을 위한 산업 차원의 발전방안을 제시하는데 목적을 두고 진행되었다. 이를 위해 우선 국내외 건설산업 현황을 분석하였으며, 국내 건설업체들의 인식수준 및 니즈 파악을 위한 설문조사와 발전방안의 실효성 검토를 위한 전문가 심층면담을 순차적으로 진행하였다. 본 연구에서 도출한 국내 토목산업의 설계-시공 균형발전 방안은 1) 토목설계업 관리체계 효율화, 2) 토목설계업 관련 제도 선진화, 3) 고부가가치 우수인력 육성, 4) 엔지니어링조합 및 컨소시엄 구성, 5) 해외건설 협력기구 조직 및 운영으로 구분하여 제시되었다.

국내 건설산업 해외 진출을 위한 핵심역량 도출 - 설계 / 시공 역량 차이를 중심으로 - (A Study on Core Competencies to increase Global Competitiveness for the Korean Construction Industry - Focusing on Discrepancies Between Construction and Design Competencies -)

  • 국내 건설 및 엔지니어링 산업은 국내 SOC 예산의 감소, 복지에 대한 관심의 증가, 건설산업에 대한 국민적 피로도가 상승함에 따라 많은 어려움을 겪고 있는 상황이다. 반면, IMF 위기를 전후로 주춤하였던 건설산업의 해외진출은 누적수주액 5000억불을 달성하는 괄목할 만한 외형적인 성장을 이루었다. 이러한 어려운 국내 시장상황과 상대적 해외 시장의 활황으로 인하여 많은 건설관련 업체들은 해외 진출을 위한 부단한 노력을 기울이고 있다. 해외건설시장은 외형적인 성장에도 불구하고, 대기업 위주의 진출, 시공/엔지니어링의 불균형, 등 여러가지 문제점을 가지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 해외건설 진출을 위한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 해외진출에 필요한 실질적인 역량 강화 대안의 도출을 시도하였으며, 특히 시공/엔지니어링 간의 요구역량 차이의 분석을 시도하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 국내 외 거시적 미시적 현황분석 및 문헌조사를 통해 해외 진출을 위한 핵심역량을 도출하는데 있다. 또한, 도출된 핵심역량을 실무자 중심의 설문을 기반으로 역량별 중요도와 현재 보유 역량의 정도를 파악하는 IPA 분석 및 GAP분석을 통하여 해외진출 핵심역량요소에 대한 심층적 분석을 시도하였다. 실무자 설문 분석 결과 우선강화역량 부분에서는 시공 분야와 엔지니어링 분야는 그 우선순위의 차이는 존재하나, 필요한 해외 진출 역량의 종류나 실천과제에 있어서의 확연한 차이를 보이지 않고 있으며 이는 해외시장에서 엔지니어링과 시공사의 업무범위가 점점 넓어지고 있다는 의미로 해석된다. 하지만 중장기 적 역량강화 부분에서는 엔지니어링 분야는 자금조달 및 사업관리 영역에 집중되는 모습을 보여주었고, 시공 분야 기존 기술분야에서 탈피할 수 있는 역량을 강화할 필요가 있는 것으로 분석되었다. 이는 글로벌 해외건설 시장에서의 설계/시공의 업역간의 통합화 움직임을 반증한다고 추정할 수 있을 것이다.

모바일 쇼핑 앱 리뷰를 이용한 시장 포지셔닝 분석 (A Market Positioning Analysis using Mobile Shopping App Reviews)

  • 최근 모바일 쇼핑 시장의 거래액 규모는 해마다 기하급수적으로 증가하고 있으며, 기업들은 모바일 애플리케이션의 어떤 특성들이 자사의 매출을 증대시킬 수 있는지에 대해 관심이 있다. 그러므로 본 논문에서는 텍스트 마이닝을 이용하여 사용자들이 많이 쓰는 모바일 쇼핑 애플리케이션의 리뷰에서 자주 쓰는 명사를 추출하고 내용분석을 통해 평가 항목들을 도출한다. 그리고 도출된 평가항목에 레퍼토리 그리드 기법을 적용하여 모바일 쇼핑 애플리케이션을 평가하고 시장 포지셔닝을 실시한다. 이를 통해 모바일 쇼핑 애플리케이션의 어떤 특성이 이용자들의 서비스 선호도에 영향을 미치는지 분석한다.
