  • With the world in financial recession, the general trend of global trade is declining. As a result, the world leading shipbuilding industries are confronted with an even more difficult task of mitigating various risks associated with the industries. How well the three shipbuilding industries, Japan, Korea and China, can adapt and manage the risks will be crucial. As the youngest of the top three, the Chinese industry faces greater risks. As it happens to share many factors with that of South Korea in 2004-2005, it is necessary to review and evaluate the risk management plan used by South Korea. This paper presents an evaluation of the risk management plan for shipbuilding industry in South Korea during 2004-2005, considering the financial and political environments at that time. This will help us to structure a plan of risk management for the future.

  • As the climate crisis intensifies, the need to improve the climate resilience of developing countries is ever increasing. Hence, the international community is seeking ways to effectively conduct climate technology transfer by linking the projects with financial mechanisms. However, commercialization of climate technology in developing countries is no easy feat as comprehensive knowledge on the target country is a prerequisite for seeking a suitable technology-financial linkage measure. Hence, in-depth discussions on effective climate technology and financial linkage measures have become an important global agenda, and South Korea, as a country with long experience in climate technology transfer, and a strong ecosystem for public climate technology, should step forward to take up a leading role. Against this backdrop, this paper proposes strategies and implementation measures for linking funds from the Multilateral Development Banks (MDB) with Korea's Public Climate Technology (PCT) by examining several key areas of R&D, international cooperation, and technology commercialization.

  • Public infrastructure is crucial to promote and sustain a sustainable economic growth and a health community. A large amount of capital investment is generally required in infrastructure projects that motivate the involvement of the private sector in the delivery process. Various relationship-based procurement methods have been attempted to maximize value-for-money. In this paper, the problems and challenges that relationship-based procurement methods have been facing are explored. A particular focus is placed on the challenges for the public-private partnership (PPP) model. Possible strategies for adapting the PPP models in the post-Global Financial Crisis era are proposed and discussed. In addition, the challenges facing alliancing, which is one of the other important relationship-based procurement methods, are also examined. Views on infrastructure procurement in the future were sought from industry professionals via interviews and are reported in this paper as well.

  • Climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions has become a climate crisis that actually threatens us and is making global efforts to solve it. In response, Korea is carrying out a "Green remodeling" project to reduce carbon emissions generated in the building maintenance stage, which has the highest percentage of all carbon emissions. However, Green remodeling is carried out under emergency supervision at the construction stage, but construction supervisors are often non-professionals, and even experienced site directors have difficulty in implementing actual designs if they do not have experience in Green remodeling construction. Therefore, this study aims to derive priorities between construction and construction focus points for each construction in order to standardize the construction of Green remodeling construction works and derive objective guidelines.

  • Purpose - This study investigates the impact of equity financing on the valuation of R&D investments using a sample of firms from 33 countries from 1997 to 2018. Design/methodology/approach - I use a modified version of the valuation regression widely used in the literature. Findings - I find evidence that R&D investments are more highly valued when financed through equity. In contrast, debt financing does not affect the valuation of R&D investments. I also document that the impact of equity financing on R&D investment valuation weakens during the financial crisis. Research implications or Originality - In light of the distinctive characteristics of innovative investment, previous research investigates its relationship with financing. What remains unexamined, however, is how financing choices impact the way investors value innovative investments. This study seeks to bridge this gap in the existing body of research using a sample of firms from 33 countries from 1997 to 2018, for 22 years.

  • Facing the global crisis of climate change, waterfront areas are experiencing a significant increase in property damages and casualties. In light of the climate change era, this paper aims to identify resilience strategies against rising sea levels and associated natural disasters. A comparison and analysis of resilience plans and strategies have been conducted for five waterfront cities. In conclusion, three key points are suggested. Firstly, establishing partnerships locally and globally is an emerging trend to effectively and collaboratively address climate change. Secondly, resilience is a fundamental concept in designing social, built, and cyber infrastructure, requiring attention from stakeholders. Lastly, designing a well-operating system is critical to respond effectively when external shocks or stress occurs.

  • Since 2009 of global financial crisis, shipbuilding industry has undergone hard times seriously. After such a long depression, the latest global shipping market index shows that the economic recovery of global shipbuilding market is underway. Especially, nations with enormous resources are going to increase their productivity or expanding their shipyards to accommodate a large amount of orders expected in the near future. However, few commercial projects have been carried out for the practical shipyard layout designs even though those can be good commercial opportunities for shipbuilding engineers. Shipbuilding starts with a shipyard construction with a large scale investment initially. Shipyard design and the equipment layout problem, which is directly linked to the productivity of ship production, is an important issue in the production planning of mass production of ships. In many cases, shipbuilding yard design has relied on the experience of the internal engineer, resulting in sporadic and poorly organized processes. Consequently, economic losses and the trial and error involved in such a design process are inevitable problems. The starting point of shipyard construction is to design a shipyard layout. Four kinds of engineering parts required for the shipyard layout design and construction. Those are civil engineering, building engineering, utility engineering and production layout engineering. Among these parts, production layout engineering is most important because its result is used as a foundation of the other engineering parts, and also, determines the shipyard capacity in the shipyard lifecycle. In this paper, the background of shipbuilding industry is explained in terms of engineering works for the recognition of the macro trend. Nextly, preliminary design methods and related case study is introduced briefly by referencing the previous research. Lastly, the designed work of layout design is validated using the computer simulation technology.

  • This study analyzed the relationship between housing price, purchase price, Gini coefficient, interest rate, and the employment, considering that the change in housing price was an important factor influencing macroeconomic variables and income inequality. The panel VAR model was constructed considering the panel data, and the Granger causality, Impulse response and Variance dispersion analysis were performed. As a result, when compared to before and after the global financial crisis, it was shown that the rent price had an effect on income inequality, but in the following period, both the rent price and the selling price affected the income inequality. And that it has a large impact on inequality. In addition, the causality between income inequality and employment rate, interest rate, and tax rate was confirmed. Therefore, it is expected that it will be a desirable policy to mitigate income inequality considering the influence of policy variables for economic activation including government real estate policy.
