In Korean tilting trains, honeycomb composite panels are used for high speed and light weight. The side wall of a tilting train consists of an aluminum honeycomb coated with carbon-fiber-reinforced epoxy skin and a nomex honeycomb panel as the main structure, with glass wool inserted between the panels. In this study, based on ASTM E2249-02, we measure the intensity sound transmission loss (TL) of the honeycomb composite panels. Using mass law deviation (MLD), we estimate the sound insulation performance of the honeycomb composite panels in terms of their weight and explore the feasibility of substituting a conventional corrugated steel panel. The transmission-loss data of the honeycomb composite panels obtained in the study will be used to establish noise-reduction measures for train compartments.
The stability behaviour of symmetrically laminated rectangular composite plates with loaded ends clamped and unloaded edges simply-supported, and subjected to uniform in-plane compression is investigated. A numerical and experimental investigation is presented in this contribution. The stacking sequence of the laminated glass/epoxy composite plates is symmetric about the middle surface and consists of 8-ply [0, 90, +45, -45]s lamination. Numerical predictions were obtained through the use of the finite element method. The above plates were modelled with 8-noded isoparametric layered shell elements. The effect of the input parameters such as the degree and forms of prescribed initial imperfection and the incremental step size required for incremental loading, on the convergence of the solution is thoroughly examined. Experimental results are presented for 10 test panels. All test panels were made from glass/epoxy unidirectional prepregs and have aspect ratio of 5.088. The laminate thicknesses were found to vary from 1.054 mm to 1.066 mm. Comparison of experimental data with predicted results show good correlation and give confidence in the finite element model.

Research on decreasing the weight of composite sandwich panels is in progress. This paper reports the experimental results for the mechanical behavior of a composite sandwich panel. The skins of sandwich panels were made of glass fiber sheets and plywood matrix composites. Their interior layers consisted of glass fiber pultrusion pipes and gold foam. Experimental tests were performed to obtain the mechanical properties and complex mechanical behavior. Before fatigue tests, tensile tests and 3-point bending tests were carried out to obtain the optimal design and determine their strength and failure mechanisms in the flat-wise position. After the static test, a fatigue test were conducted at a load frequency of 5 Hz, stress ratio (R) of 0.1, and endurance limit for the S-N curve. It showed that the failure modes were related to both the core design and skin failure.

To improve the fire vulnerability of the organic insulation sandwich panel core, which is the main culprit of the large-scale fire disaster, an experiment was conducted to examine the thermal conductivity properties of the core material mixed with the organic insulation material EPS Bead and the inorganic insulation material glass wool. As the Additional ratio of glass wool increased, the thermal conductivity decreased, and it was determined that the replacement of glass wool of 3% or more had little effect on the decrease in thermal conductivity. In addition, it can be seen that the most ideal thermal conductivity is exhibited when 1% Replacement ratio of EPS and 3% glass wool are added. The core material of such organic and inorganic insulation materials is judged to be a core material that can compensate for the fire vulnerability of existing insulation materials. Therefore, in order to determine whether it is used as a core material for sandwich panels, additional studies such as fire resistance experiments and sound absorption experiments are needed in the future.
The effective glass frit composition used to absorb laser energy and to seal commercial dye-sensitized solar cell panel substrates has been previously developed using $V_2O_5-TeO_2$-based glass with 10 wt% ${\beta}$-eucryptite as a CTE controlling filler. The optimum sealing conditions are provided using a 3 mm beam, a laser power of 40 watt, a scan speed of 300 mm/s, and 200 irradiation cycles. In this study, the feasibility of the developed glass frit is investigated in terms of the sealing strength and chemical durability against the commercial iodide/triiodide electrolyte solution and fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) electrode in order to increase the solar cell lifetime. The sealing strength of the laser-sealed $V_2O_5-TeO_2$-based glass frit is $20.5{\pm}1.7MPa$, which is higher than those of thermally sealed glass frit and other reported glass frit. Furthermore, the developed glass frit is chemically stable against electrolyte solutions. The glass frit constituents are not leached out from the glass after soaking in the electrolyte solution for up to three months. During the laser sealing, the glass frit does not react with the FTO electrode; thus, the resistivity of the FTO electrode beneath the laser-sealed area remains the same.

In this paper, a machine vision system for recognizing and classifying the patterns and marks engraved by die molding or laser marking on the glass panels of computer monitors is suggested and evaluated experimentally. The vision system is equipped with a neural network and an NGC pattern classifier including searching process based on normalized grayscale correlation and adaptive binarization. This system is found to be applicable even to the cases in which the segmentation of the pattern area from the background using ordinary blob coloring technique is quite difficult. The inspection process is accomplished by the use of the NGC hypothesis and ANN verification. The proposed pattern recognition system is composed of three parts: NGC matching process and the preprocessing unit for acquiring the best quality of binary image data, a neural network-based recognition algorithm, and the learning algorithm for the neural network. Another contribution of this paper is the method of generating the training patterns from only a few typical product samples in place of real images of all types of good products.

In this paper we developed Composite-Smart-Structures(CSS) using sandwich structure composed of Glass/Epoxy laminates and Nomex honeycomb and microstrip antenna. Transmission/reflection theory shows that antenna performances can be improved due to multiple reflection by Glass/Epoxy facesheet, and honeycomb is used for air gap between antenna and facesheet. Stacked radiating patches are used for the wideband. Facesheet and honeycomb thicknesses are selected considering both wideband and high gain. Measured electrical performances show that CSS has wide bandwidth over $10\%$ and higher gain by 3.5dBi than initially designed antenna, and no doubt it has excellent mechanical performances by sandwich effect given by composite laminates and honeycomb core. The CSS concept can be extended to give a useful guide for manufacturers of structural body panels as well as antenna designers, promising innovative future communication technology.
The effect of an increasing percentage of nanofiller (glass cenosphere) with Glass/Epoxy hybrid composite curved panels modeled mathematically using the multiscale concept and subsequent numerical eigenvalues of different geometrical configurations (cylindrical, spherical, elliptical, hyperboloid and flat) predicted in this research article. The numerical model of Glass/Epoxy/Cenosphere is derived using the higher-order polynomial type of kinematic theory in association with isoparametric finite element technique. The multiscale mathematical model utilized for the customized computer code for the evaluation of the frequency data. The numerical model validation and consistency verified with experimental frequency data and convergence test including the experimental elastic properties. The experimental frequencies of the multiscale nano filler-reinforced composite are recorded through the impact hammer frequency test rig including CDAQ-9178 (National Instruments) and LABVIEW virtual programming. Finally, the nano cenosphere filler percentage and different design associated geometrical parameters on the natural frequency data of hybrid composite structural configurations are illustrated through a series of numerical examples.

As the digital TV markets rapidly growing, many manufacturers introduce large size flat screen TV units. There are two different display types available to large size models which are plasma and TFT-LCD. Since both are constructed with thin large panels that are mostly fragile to even moderate mechanical shock inputs. Some large size panels are severely resonated by the acoustic sound generated TV which deteriorates video quality. Recognizing the potential problems of large displays, accurate measurement of the panels is to be an essential task for the reliable design. Measurement of mechanical properties of a thin large crystallized panel such as TFT-LCD display with traditional material testing equipments is challenging. Since TFT-LCDs are constructed with combination of brittle glass panels, polymer sheets, and liquid crystal, their properties are not only anisotropic but also usually non-linear. Accurate measurement of the properties often requires very expensive facilities. Especially when the size of the test sample is as large as 40-inch or wider, direct measurement cost is prohibitive. Even worse, machining of the large TFT-LCD to make a smaller size specimen that could be fit into a material tester is not possible because of liquid crystal leakage. A new method fer the measurement of elastic modulus of large TFT-LCD panel is presented in this article. The suggested method provides a simple, economic, and user-friendly way fer measuring the elastic modulus of large panels with considerable level of accuracy.

In this paper, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and micro glass bubbles (GBs) have been incorporated into a polyamide6 (PA6) matrix to impart thermoelectric properties. The spaces created in the matrix by GBs allows the formation of "segregated" CNT network. The tightly bound CNT network, if controlled properly, can serve as a conductive path for electron transport, while prohibiting phonon transport, which would provide an ideal configuration for thermoelectric applications. The CNTs and GBs were dispersed in a nylon-formic acid solution using horn sonication followed by coagulation in deionized water, and nanocomposite panels were fabricated using a hot press. The performance of nanocomposite panels was evaluated from thermal and electrical conductivities and Seebeck coefficient, and a thermoelectric figure of merit as high as 0.016 was achieved.
