Construction industry is one of the largest markets for composite materials. Composite materials are mostly utilized as surface coatings or concrete reinforcements, and they can hardly be found as a load bearing member in buildings. The three-dimensional composite structures with considerable bending, compressive and shear strengths are capable to be used as construction load bearing members. However, these composites cannot compete with other materials due to higher manufacturing costs. If the cost issue is resolved or their excellent performance is taken into consideration to overcome disadvantages related to economic-competitive challenges, these 3D composites can significantly reduce the construction time and result in lighter and safer buildings. Sandwich composite panels reinforced with 3D woven glass fabrics are amongst composites with highest bending strength. The current study investigates the possibility of utilizing these composite materials to construct ceilings and their application as slabs. One-to-one scale experimental loading of these composite panels shows a remarkable bending strength. Simulation results using ABAQUS software, also indicate that theoretical predictions of bending behavior of these panels are in good agreement with the observed experimental results.

Touch panels are widely used in the modern display industry as the cover glass of smart mobile phones and tablet PCs. Glass cutting machines are commonly used to cut the panels into their proper sizes. Vibration of these glass cutting machines is assumed to be the main factor leading to the creation of burrs, notches, cracks, scratches and chips on the cut surfaces, eventually causing defects of the cover glass. In this study, the vibrations of a glass cutting machine used for the shearing of cover glass components were analyzed through an experiment and a computer simulation. The structural properties leading to vibration were also analyzed in an effort to determine design alterations which can suppress these vibrations. Moreover, each design alteration was applied to a computer simulation model to determine the effect of different alteration on suppressing vibration. The results show that simple design alterations can substantially suppress vibrations of glass cutting machines.
Effects of chemical compositions on the sintering behavior of the lead borosilicate glass developed for barrier ribs of plasma display panels were investigated in this study. Formation of pores during sintering of the glass was noted and their formation mechanism was investigated using XPS, TG/DTA, and XRD. The results indicated that pores are formed by the oxygen released from Pb-oxides during sintering.
In lighting system where several large-area organic light-emitting diode (OLED) lighting panels are involved, panel aging may appear differently from each other, resulting in a falling-off in lighting quality. To achieve uniform light output across large-area OLED lighting panels, we have employed an optical feedback circuit. Light output from each OLED panel is monitored by the optical feedback circuit that consists of a photodiode, I-V converter, 10-bit analogdigital converter (ADC), and comparator. A photodiode generates current by detecting OLED light from one side of the glass substrate (i.e., edge emission). Namely, the target luminance from the emission area (bottom emission) of OLED panels is monitored by current generated from the photodiode mounted on a glass edge. To this end, we need to establish a mapping table between the ADC value and the luminance of bottom emission. The reference ADC value corresponds to the target luminance of OLED panels. If the ADC value is lower or higher than the reference one (i.e., when the luminance of OLED panel is lower or higher than its target luminance), a micro controller unit (MCU) adjusts the pulse width modulation (PWM) used for the control of the power supplied to OLED panels in such a way that the ADC value obtained from optical feedback is the same as the reference one. As such, the target luminance of each individual OLED panel is unchanged. With the optical feedback circuit included in the lighting system, we have observed only 2% difference in relative intensity of neighboring OLED panels.

This paper presents the impact damage behavior of filament wound composite vessels and the effect of surface protective materials on their impact resistance. Using an instrumented impact testing machine, a series of impact tests was performed on the base panels and the protected panels (panels with surface protective materials of rubber, kevlar/epoxy or glass/epoxy laminates) that were cut from the full scale vessel. And the impact damage parameters were used to identify the effect of protective materials on the damage resistance of composite vessels. Damage resistance of the composite vessels was considerably affected by the protective materials regardless of the shape of the indenters. Among the protective materials, glass/epoxy laminates was the most effective mean for improving the damage resistance of composite vessels.
Single sound absorbers such as porous materials, panels, and Helmholts resonators have limited performance with some extents of frequency region. For example, porous materials do not attenuate low frequency sounds, while panels do not absorb high frequency sounds. Composite absorption structure with coverings, porous materials, and air gaps are an alternative for wide band sound absorption. Slits, panels, perforated panels are those materials for coverings, glass wool, mineral wool, polyester, and polyurethane are frequently used porous materials. Air gap between the porous material and background surface is one of major factors which governs the absorption characteristics of composite absorption structures, especially in the low frequency area. Calculations and measurements show that the absorption coefficients of composite absorption structure, in mid and low frequency bands, are getting higher with increased air gaps. Perforated panels rather than slits and panels are good coverings with higher number as far as absorption coefficient is concerned. Perforated panels with porous materials and 37 cm of air gaps in background have high absorption coefficients for all frequency bands, above 0.7 to 1.0. All measurements are performed in reverberation chamber, Mokpo National University, according to ISO 354 and ISO 3382.
For reliability evaluation of AC-PDP, one of the most important factor is sealing property. In this paper, the reliability evaluation test method of the commercialized sealing glass frit in AC-PDP was studied. 6 inch AC-PDP panels were tested for evaluation of sealing glass frit by vibration shock test, thermal shock test, non -destructive X-ray inspection, residual stress inspection and residual gas detection. These test methods are proposed as a standard for testing the reliability of sealing glass frit. The main failure mode of sealing glass frit in AC-PDP seems to be the crack propagation from thermal cycling rather than mechanical factor.

Evacuated powder insulations have long been known to have better thermal performance than existing commercially available insulators, such as fiber glass and CFC-blown foam. To make a composite powder panel, a series of individually evacuated panels was encapsulated in a rigid closed cell foam matrix. The panels were encapsulated in a thin glass sheet barrier to preserve the vacuum. The thermal conductivity of the individual panel was found to be $0.0062W/m^{\circ}K$ by experiment and the polyurethane foam above had a thermal conductivity of $0.024W/m^{\circ}K$. In this study, numerical analysis using finite element method was carried out to investigate insulation performance of rigid foam/evacuated powder composite panel with respect to panel geometries such as panel pitch, panel aspect ratio and panel area ratio. Numerical analysis has indicated that more optimal vacuum panel geometries, much lower overall thermal conductivities can be achieved.

The structural stiffness, strength and stability on the bodyshell and floor structures of the Korean Low Floor Bus composed of laminate, sandwich panels and metal reinforced frame were evaluated. The laminate composite panel and facesheet of sandwich panel were made of WR580/NF4000 glass fabric/epoxy laminate, while aluminum honeycomb or balsa was applied to the core materials of the sandwich panel. A finite element analysis was used to verify the basic design requirements of the bodyshell and the floor structure. The use of aluminum reinforced frame and honeycomb core was beneficial for weight saving and structural performance. The symmetry of the outer and inner facesheet thickness of sandwich panels did not affect the structural integrity. The structural strength of the panels was evaluated using Von-Mises criterion for metal structures and total laminate approach criterion for composite structures. All stress component of the bodyshell and floor structures were safely located below the failure stresses. The total laminate approach is recommended to predict the failure of hybrid sandwich composite structures at the stage of the basic design.
Transparent plasma display can be realized by developing the synthetic chemistry of appropriate nanophosphors and generating nanophosphor-based transparent luminescent layers. For this goal, red-emitting $Y(V_{0.5},\;P_{0.5})O_4$:Eu nanophosphors were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal route at $200^{\circ}C$ for 48 h and the resulting nanophosphors were subsequently annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ at an ambient atmosphere. The crystallographic structure, morphology, and emission property of the as-synthesized and annealed nanophosphors were compared. Choosing 2-methoxyethanol as a dispersion medium and applying a standard sonication, well-dispersed nanophosphor solutions could be prepared. Using these dispersions, visible transparent nanophosphor layers were spin-deposited on glass substrates. By combining $Y(V_{0.5},\;P_{0.5})O_4$:Eu nanophosphor layer/glass substrate as a rear plate with a front plate used in a conventional plasma display panels (PDPs), mini-sized transparent red-emitting PDPs were constructed. Transmittance and luminance properties of two transparent test panels using as-synthesized versus $800^{\circ}C$-annealed nanophosphors were characterized and compared.
