Glass fiber reinforced PET matrix composite was manufactured by rapid press consolidation technique as functions of temperature, pressure and time in pre-heating, consolidation and solidification stages. The optimal manufacturing conditions for this composite were discussed based on the void content, tensile, interlaminar shear and impact properties. In addition, the levels of crystallinity with various manufacturing conditions were measured using differential scanning calorimetry to investigate the mechanical properties of this composite material as a function of crystallinity. Among many processing parameters, the mold temperature and the cooling rate after forming were found to be the most critical factors in determining the level of crystallinity and mechanical properties. The level of crystallinity affects the tensile properties to some degree. However, impact properties are affected much more. It also affects the degree of ductility, which determines the impact energy of this material.
An interlaboratory wear testing was performed in order to understand the friction behaviors and the wear mechanisms of the sintered composites. The specimens were the sintered bronze matrix composites having various contents of friction additives, friction control agents and reinforcements. The variation of the wear characteristics according to the constituents of the composites as well as the wear conditions was investigated by SEM, EPMA, OM, the hardness testing and the measurement of friction. The specimen having glass fiber as the matrix reinforcement showed a remarkable increase in wear resistance as increasing the content of glass fiber. Graphite particles in the composites exhibited the lubricating effect and also resulted in the lowering strength of the matrix. Addition of Mo powder to the composites led to the deterioration of wear properties at the room temperature, however, an enhanced wear properties were obtained in the containing Mo at an elevated temperature.
In this paper, we present modeling and simulation of microlens formation by means of a deep X-ray lithography followed by a thermal treatment of a PMMA (Polymethylmethacrylate) sheet. According to this modeling, X-ray irradiation causes the decrease of molecular weight of PMMA, which in turn decreases the glass transition temperature and consequently causes a net volume increase during the thermal cycle resulting in a swollen microlens. In this modeling, the free volume theory including the relaxation process during the cooling process was considered. The simulation results indicate that the modeling in this study is able to predict the fabricated microlens shapes and the variation pattern of the maximum heights of microlens which depends on the conditions of the thermal treatment. The prediction model could be applied to optimization of microlens fabrication process and to designing a micro mold insert for micromolding processes.
This paper reports on a flexible flap valve actuated by electromagnetic force under a constant pressure source. The flexible flap valve consists of the three main components: a flexible flap with a steel disk embedded in PDMS, an electromagnetic actuator and two glass plates with inlet and outlet. Sealing lip structures for improving the valve characteristics are added on the outlet of the bottom glass substrate. The flap valve is fabricated by the spin-coating process, the EDM process, SU-8 mold process and oxygen plasma treatment. The dimension of an assembled flap valve is $12mm{\times}20mm{\times}28mm$. The stroke volume of the flap valve is measured for various pressures and open times. When the input voltage of 30 V is applied for 0.33 s, the minimum stroke volume of the flap valve is 70 ${\mu}L$ at 50 kPa.
Three dimensional thermal cycle analysis of the plunger is carried out in repeated forming process of the TV glass, which is continued work of two dimensional analysis where an efficient method has been proposed. The plunger undergoes temperature fluctuation during a cycle due to the repeated contact and separation from the glass, which attains a cyclic steady state having same temperature history at every cycle. Straightforward analysis of this problem brings about more than 90 cycles to get reasonable solution. An exponential function fitting method is proposed, which finds exponential function to best approximate temperature values of 3 consecutive cycles, and new cycle is restarted with the fitted value at infinite time. Number of cases are analyzed using the proposed method and compared to the result of straightforward repetition, from which one finds that the method always reaches nearly convergent solution within $9{\sim}12$ cycles, but turns around afterwards without further convergence. Two step use is found most efficient, in which the exponential fitting is carried out fer the first 12 cycles, followed by simple repetition, which shows fast convergence expending only 6 additional cycles to get the accuracy within 2 error. This reduces the computation cycle remarkably from 90 to 18, which is 80% reduction. From the parametric studies, one reveals that the overall thermal behavior of the plunger in terms of cooling parameters and time is similar to that of 2 dimensional analysis.
Various types suspension insulators made of toughness glass or porcelain are used in the power transmission. And, Insulators are continually subject to mechanical and electrical stresses which depend on the characteristics of the line. The main factor that influence the increase in reliability of insulators. In operation is the capacity of the design to withstand the certain load over a long time, the mechanical strength of the insulators. This paper describes the results of a study on the stress analysis of suspension insulator based on the finite element analysis using NASTRAN. And, the mechanical strength was evaluated through such as kinds of pin type.
To overcome the disadvantages of conventional excavation technology, various trenchless (or excavation free, or no-dig) repair-reinforcement technologies have been developed and tried. But trenchless technologies so fat developed have some brawbacks such as high cost and inconvenience of operation. In this study, a repairing-reinforcing process for underground pipes with glass fiber fabric polymer composites using VARTM(Vacuum Assisted Resin Transfer Molding) has been developed. The developed process requires shorter operation time and lower cost with smaller and simpler operating equipments than those of the conventional trenchless technologies. For the reliable operation of the developed method, a simple method to apply pressure and vacuum to the reinforcement was devised and flexible mold technology was tried. Also, resin filling and cure status during RTM process were monitored with a commercial dielectrometry cure monitoring system, LACOMCURE. From the investigation, it has been found that the developed repairing-reinforcing technology with appropriate process variables and on-line cure monitoring has many advantages over conventional methods.
A custom micro-PIV optics assembly has been used to measure the flow fold inside a T-junction of a microchannel. The micro-PIV system consists of microscope objectives of various magnifications, a dichroic cube, and an 8-bit CCD camera. Fluorescent particles of diameters 620 nm have been used with a Nd:YAG laser and color filters. A programmable syringe pump with Teflon tubings were used to inject particle-seeded distilled water into the channel at flow rates of 2.0, 4.0, 6.0 mL/hr. The micro-channels are fabricated with PDMS with a silicon mold, then O$_{2}$ -ion bonded onto a slide glass. Results show differences in flow characteristics and resolution according to fluid injection rates, and magnifications, respectively. The results include PIV data with vector-to-vector distances of 2 $\mu$m with 32 pixel-square interrogation windows at 50$\%$ overlap.
