The aim of the study is to compare the fluoride release and recharge properties of glass ionomer cements and 'alkasite'. Specimens of two glass ionomer cements (Fuji IX GP and Riva Self Cure), 'alkasite' restorative material (Cention N) and composite resin (Filtek™ Z350XT) were prepared. The fluoride release of each specimen was measured for 28 days. Thereafter, 1.23% acidulated phosphate fluoride (APF) gel was applied to experimental groups. No treatment was performed on control groups. The fluoride release was measured for additional 7 days to evaluate the fluoride recharge properties of each materials. The fluoride release was highest in Riva Self Cure, followed by Fuji IX GP, Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride release of Cention N was measured to be approximately 49% of Fuji IX GP's. After the application of 1.23% APF gel, increases in fluoride release were observed in Riva Self Cure, Fuji IX GP and Cention N (p < 0.05). Fluoride recharge was observed in Cention N as well as in glass ionomer cements. Further studies are required to evaluate the anti-cariogenic properties of Cention N at clinical conditions.
Orthodontic band cements are widely used in the fields of orthodontics, but they are commonly known as cytotoxic material. Within an oral cavity several ions and components are released from orthodontic band cements, thus causing inflammation or injury to the Periodontal tissue. Therefore, it is very important to estimate the biocompatibility of orthodontic band cements. The purpose of this study was to assess the cytotoxic effect of orthodontic band cements to HGF cells. A zinc phosphate cement, a glass ionomer, a resin modified glass ionomer, and compomer were used to evaluate three cytotoxicity assays: cell proliferation assay, MTT assay, and agar ovelay assay The results were as follows: 1. In the cell proliferation assay, Gl>ZPC, RMGI, RMGI24, GI24>compomer24, ZPC24, compomer>metal ring lined up in order of cytotoxicity 2. In the MTT assay, GI>ZPC, RMGI>GI24>ZPC24, compomer, metal ring, RMGI24, compomer24 lined up in order of cytotoxicity. 3. In the agar overlay test, GI>GI24, ZPC, ZPC24, RMGI>RMGI24, compomer, compomer24, metal ring lined up in order of cytotoxicity.
Objective: Surface characteristics of dental materials play an important role in bacterial adhesion. The purpose of this study was to investigate surface characteristics of 5 different light-cured orthodontic adhesives (1 fluoride-releasing composite, 3 non-fluoride-releasing composites, and f resin-modified glass ionomer). Methods: Surface roughness was measured using a confocal laser scanning microscope. Contact angle and surface free energy components were analyzed using the sessile drop method. Results: Surface roughness was significantly different between adhesives despite a relatively small variation (less than $0.05\;{\mu}m$). Lightbond and Monolok2 were rougher than Enlight and Transbond XT. There were also significant differences in contact angles and surface free energy components between adhesives. In particular, considerable differences in contact angles and surface free energy components were found between resin modified glass ionomer and the composites. Resin modified glass ionomer showed significantly smaller contact angles in 3 different probe liquids and had higher total surface free energy and stronger polarity, with notably stronger basic property than the composites. Conclusion: Resin modified glass ionomer may provide a more favourable environment for bacterial adhesion than composite adhesives.

The aim of this study was to compare compressive strength and microhardness of recently introduced alkasite restorative materials with glass ionomer cement and flowable composite resin. For each material, 20 samples were prepared respectively for compressive strength and Vickers microhardness test. The compressive strength was measured with universal testing machine at crosshead speed of 1 mm/min. And microhardness was measured using Vickers Micro hardness testing machine under 500 g load and 10 seconds dwelling time at 1 hour, 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, 21 days and 35 days. The compressive strength was highest in composite resin, followed by alkasite, and glass ionomer cement. In microhardness test, composite resin, which had no change throughout experimental periods, showed highest microhardness in 1 hour, 1 day, and 7 days measurement. The glass ionomer cement showed increase in microhardness for 7 days and no difference was found with composite resin after 14 days measurement. For alkasite, maximum microhardness was measured on 14 days, but showed gradual decrease.

The purpose of this study was to compare the amount of fluoride release and remineralizing effect of compomer with those of glass ionomer cement and composite resin. Composite resin($Z-100^{(R)}$) was used for negative control group(Group I), glass ionomer(Fuji II $LC^{(R)}$) for positive control group(Group IV), compomer(Dyract $AP^{(R)}$ and $F-2000^{(R)}$) for experimental group(Group II and Group III). The results obtained can be summarized as follows : 1. Glass ionomer showed the higher amount of fluoride release than compomer groups. Composite resin showed no fluoride release during test period. 2. Significant evidence of remineralization could be noticed in samples of all groups. The highest degree of remineralization was observed in glass ionomer group followed by compomer group. The least evidence of remineralization was observed in composite resin group. 3. Microhardness values of carious site was lower than control site, but Microhardness values of caries site at form away from filling materials in group II, III, IV was significantly higher than the other area. Based on the above results, compomer could be considered as one of the very attractive restorative materials in the field of pediatric dentistry.

For the purpose of comparing the bond strengths of some tooth adhesive restoration materials on primary enamel and dentin, 4 kinds (7 brands) of restorative materials including a composite resin (Z 100), a conventional glass ionomer cement (Chem-Flex), 2 brands of resin-modified glass ionomer cements (Fuji II LC-I, Vitremer), and 3 brands of compomers(Dyract AP, F2000, Compoglass) were investigated using UTM for measuring the shear bond strengths. Additionally the failure modes were examined by histologically observing the fractured surfaces of each specimen. The following results were obtained. 1. The shear bond strengths of Z 100 to the primary enamel were higher than those of other experimental materials except Fuji II LC-I, which showed significantly higher bond strength than Chem-Flex or Vitremer (P<0.05). 2. The shear bond strengths of Z 100 to the primary dentin were higher than those of other experimental materials except Dyract AP and Fuji II LC-I, both of which showed significantly higher shear strength than Chem-Flex or Vitremer (P<0.05). 3. The shear bond strengths of all restorative materials except Dyract AP showed relatively higher values to enamel surface than to dentin surface. In Dyract AP, the reverse was true significantly. 4. All materials examined showed cohesive failures except some Chem-Flex and Vitremer, which showed adhesive failures.

The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in demineralization resistance and bonding strength of light cured glass ionomer after the addition of nano hydroxyapatite in various ratios. Fuji II LC GIC (GC Co., Japan) was used as the control group and also as a base material for experimental group. HA was mixed into the RMGIC at various ratio to create a HA-LC GIC mixture, preparing six experimental groups, i.e. 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 25%, 30% HA-LC GIC. According to the results, the bonding strength increased due to the addition of HA, showing the maximum value at the 15% nano HA group (p < 0.05). Under CLSM observation after 4 days of demineralization, the HA groups were more resistant to demineralization compared to the control group. No significant difference was observed between HA groups. In analysis through SEM, the HA groups showed attachment of granular materials and decreased demineralized tooth surfaces under influence of HA particles.

The resin modified glass ionomer cements(RMGICs) have been used for years since 1989. Recently it has been developed for luting of fixed restorations. To evaluate the bond strength and marginal leakage of RMGICs for luting usage, the 80 extracted human molars which had uniform area of exposed dentin were cemented with 3 types of RMGICs(Fuji Duet, Advance, Vitremer), a conventional Glass Ionomer Cement(GIC-Fuji I), and a resin cement (Panavia 21) to base metal alloy(Ni-Cr-Be). After thermocycling the specimens were immersed in basic fuschin dye for measuring marginal leakage. The shear bond strength was measured with Instron and the maximum dye penetration was measured to 0.1mm. The types of fractured patterns were determined with stereoscope(${\times}7.5$). The results are as follows. 1. The difference between 3 RMGICs and a conventional GIC in shear bond strength was not statistically significant. It seemed that RMGICs had lower shear bond strength than resin cement. (p<0.01) 2. The mean scores of marginal leakage had no significant difference between the resin cement and 3 RMGICs but it was much higher in conventional GIC than the RMGICs (p<0.05) 3. It was determined that the manufacturer and the methods of dentin pretreatment determined the pattern of fracture surfaces and the frequency of adhesive failure between teeth and 3 RMGICs standed as in following order - Vitremer, Advance, Fuji Duet. (p<0. 01) When the fracture pattern was analyzed, it could be said that the materials and the method of dentin pretreatment have much effect on bonding states. This means that the dentin bonding agents should be improved. But the limited products in this experiment can not evaluate the physical properties of the entire RMGICs. Therefore a further study which can evaluate various RMGICs should be in progress to develope better cements.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate for the cytotoxicity of glass-ionomer cement liners(GC liningcement, Ketac-bond, Vitrebond and Fuji lining LC) on the fibroblasts cultured from human pulp. The fibroblasts were cultured in DMEM-10% FBS medium. The measurement of pH, succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) activity test and $^{51}Chromium$ release test were performed. Viable cell count and $^{14}C$-leucine incorporation rate were evaluated following culture time of 2, 4 and 6 days. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The pH in all cements was to be neutralized as time elapsed, and Fuji lining LC was the lowest pH value among them. 2. SDH activity was more inhibited in GC lining cement and Vitrebond than Ketac-bond and Fuji lining LC with the setting process, and GC lining cement and Ketac-bond were reduced after 5 minute's setting and then elevated as time elapsed. 3. In SDH activity test following exposure time, the activity in Vitrebond, GC lining cement and Fuji lining LC was inhibited with increased exposure time, but it was fairly constant in Ketac-bond. 4. Overall the liquid component was more inhibited than the powder component of glass-ionomer cement in SDH activity test. 5. In $^{51}Cr$-release test, Fuji lining LC was the most released of all the cements tested and followed by : Vitrebond, Ketac-bond, GC lining cement. 6. In viable cell count, the number of cells increased as the culture day proceeded in Ketac-bond, but they decreased in GC lining cement. Fuji lining LC was only observed after 2 days culture and there was not observed the whole culture days in Vitrebond. 7. In $^{14}C$-leucine incorporation rate test, protein synthesis was decreased with the number of culture days in GC lining cement, Vitrebond and Fuji lining LC, but it was followed that of control in Ketacbond.
The shade of restorative materials is very important for successful restoration esthetically harmonized with the natural tooth. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the color stability and the opacity change of conventional chemical setting and visible light curing glass-ionomer cements for restorative esthetic filling. Specimens of each brand (GC Fuji II and Fuji II LC) were uniformly prepared and divided into three groups: In group l(control group), the specimens received no surface treatment; in group 2, the specimens were coated with varnish and the excess gently blown off; and in group 3. the specimens were coated with light-cured bonding resin and irradiated by a visible light curing unit for 20 seconds on both sides. All specimens were stored in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ and checked after for 24 hours. 2 months. 4 months, 6 months. and 8 months. The color characteristics($L^*,\;a^*,\;b^*$) and the opacity(Y%) of all the samples were measured by a spectrocolorimeter and the total color differences(${\Delta}E^*$) and opacity changes(${\Delta}Y%$) were computed. The following results were obtained : 1. The total tolor differences in all groups increased with time. 2. The total color differences of the LC groups after immersion for 8 months in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were lower than those of GC groups(p<0.01), and the total color differences of the varnish or the light-cured bonding resin coated groups were lower than those of the control group with glass-ionomer cements which had no surface treatment(p<0.01). 3. In all groups the translucency decreased with time. 4. In the control group and the varnish coating group. the opacity changes of the GC groups were lower than those of the LC groups(p<0.01) and in the light-cured bonding resin coated group, there was no significant difference between the GC group and the LC group. 5. The opacity changes of the varnish or the light-cured bonding resin coated groups were lower than those of the control group(p<0.01). These results suggest that color change and opacity of conventional chemical setting and light cured glass-ionomer cement were increased with time, and the color changes and the opacity changes of a control group after immersion for 8 months in distilled water at $37^{\circ}C$ were greater than those of the varnish or the light-cured bonding resin coated groups.
