  • Oxidized-PAN fiber reinforced composite(OFRP), carbon fiber reinforced composite(CFRP), aramid fiber reinforced composite(AFRP), and glass fiber reinforced composite(GFRP) were fabricated with phenolic resin matrix by hot press molding. We tested the friction coefficient and wear rate varying with fiber weight fraction and observed the effect of fibers according to characteristics of individual reinforcement. When the amount of aramid fiber was 45wt%, average friction coefficient was maximum value of 0.353~0.383, where as, when the amount of pitch based carbon fiber was 45wt%, average friction coefficient was the lowest value of 0.164~0.190. The wear rate of AFRP and CFRP was low, but that of GFRP and OFRP increases drastically in the case of increasing of fiber weight fraction. Wear diagram of OFRP was unstable, but that of CFRP and AFRP was a bit stable. Through very unstable diagram of GFRP, we found that friction stability of GFRP was the lowest.

  • Objectives: The aim of this study is to identify concentration characteristics of indoor and outdoor airborne total fiber particles and asbestos in Gyeongnam Provinces. Methods: This study investigated concentration characteristics of indoor fiber particles from 748 schools and 38 public facilities as well as outdoor particles from 11 sites through PCM (phase contrast microscope). SEM/EDX (scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive using X-ray analysis) was used to obtain physicochemical information of asbestos fiber particles. The study identified asbestos rate in the 15 samples from indoor and outdoor airborne total fiber particles. Results: 1. The average indoor airborne concentrations of total fiber particles were $0.0011{\pm}0007$ f/cc in schools and $0.0015{\pm}0007$ f/cc in public facilities by PCM. Over 90% of the fiber particles were identified as single fibers. 2. The average outdoor airborne concentrations of total fiber particles were $0.0007{\pm}0002$ f/cc, and they were lower than those of indoor airborne concentrations. 3. The results showed that the form of asbestiform was diverse as skein of thread like form and long needle, which was relatively narrower than that of glass fiber and rock wool. 4. The results of SEM/EDX analysis of 15 areas where total fiber particle was relatively high showed that the form was rather similar to that of asbestos, but chemical composition was proven to be non-asbestos. Conclusions: The concentration of indoor and outdoor airborne total fiber particles of Gyeongnam Provinces satisfied the IAQ (Indoor air quality) level of 0.01 f/cc and asbestos was not found in most of the samples by SEM/EDX.

  • The mechanical properties of polypropylene (PP) composites, especially the effects of the filler shapes on the modulus were studied. The experimental results were investigated and compared with the theoretical approaches proposed by Lee and Paul and based on Eshelby's principle, which three dimensional ellipsoids were filled as filler and analyzed in terms of aspect ratio, ${\rho}_\alpha=a_1/a_3$ and ${\rho}_\beta=a_1/a_2$. The shapes of fillers were observed by SEM and aspect ratios were statistically calculated. Young's moduli in the longitudinal and transverse directions for barium sulfate whose shape was sphere ($\rho_\alpha=\rho_\beta=1$) had the same values, as predicted values. The modulus in the $x_1$ direction for a glass fibers increased as the filler content increased, while the modulus in the $x_3$ direction was increased relatively small. Furthermore, mica was also used to investigate the effects of the primary and secondary aspect ratios on the mechanical properties.

  • By using the spectroscopic ellipsometry, we have measured and analyzed the optical characteristics of P $r^3$$^{+}$-doped selenide glasses of Ge-Sb-Se system, a strong candidate material for U band fiber amplifiers. The ellipsometric spectra measured in the transparent wavelengths range of the material were all fitted to a model consisting of ambient/roughness/thin fil $m_strate structures to obtain simultaneously the optical properties such as refractive index, in terms of Sellmeier parameters and film structure of P $r^3$$^{+}$-doped selenide glasses. Repeated measurements on different positions in both polished faces rendered to verify positional dependence of measured spectre-ellipsometric data. Hence, the model made possible the analysis of the optical characteristics of the glasses. Even though surface roughness was mainly responsible for the position dependencies, the averaged refractive indexes were as precise as to reflect the minute compositional change tantamount to 1 mol%. The measured refractive indexes are useful for design of core and clad compositions of single-mode selenide optical fibers.

  • The high-density fiber composite manufacturing method by the extrusion molding method has the characteristic that continuous production is possible, and the product is molded through a mold forming a specific cross-section. OPC is used as a defect material, an appropriate amount of SiO2 is supplied for CaO reaction activity, and high density and high strength are expressed through steam and autoclave curing. However, due to the use of organic reinforcing fibers, the flame duration exceeds the regulations during the non-combustible performance test, making it difficult to secure performance. In this study, the product was produced by mixing alkali-resistant organic fiber and fly ash having voids as a binder by replacing the existing polypropylene fiber. appeared to be possible.

  • Composite material-due to low density-causes weight savings, which results in lower fuel consumption of transport vehicles. The aim of the research was to change the existing base-plate of the aluminum airplane container with the composite sandwich plate in order to reduce the weight of the containers of cargo aircrafts. The newly constructed sandwich plate consists of aluminum honeycomb core and composite face-sheets. The face-sheets consist of glass or carbon or hybrid fiber layers. The orientations of the fibers in the face-sheets were 0°, 90° and ±45°. Multi-objective optimization method was elaborated for the newly constructed sandwich plates. Based on the design aim, the importance of the objective functions (weight and cost of sandwich plates) was the same (50%). During the optimization nine design constraints were considered: stiffness, deflection, facing stress, core shear stress, skin stress, plate buckling, shear crimping, skin wrinkling, intracell buckling. The design variables were core thickness and number of layers of the face-sheets. During the optimization both the Weighted Normalized Method of the Excel Solver and the Genetic Algorithm Solver of Matlab software were applied. The mechanical properties of composite face-sheets were calculated by Laminator software according to the Classical Lamination Plate Theory and Tsai-Hill failure criteria. The main added-value of the study is that the multi-objective optimization method was elaborated for the newly constructed sandwich structures. It was confirmed that the optimal new composite sandwich construction-due to weight savings and lower fuel consumption of cargo aircrafts - is more advantageous than conventional all-aluminum container.

  • This paper is a basic study to evaluate the possibility of earthquake-resistant reinforcement by reinforcing engineered cementitious composite in masonry members. In order to examine the performance according to the fiber mixing rate of the engineered cementitious composite, a test specimen was prepared according to the formulation design, and flow ability, compressive strength, flexural strength, length change rate, and direct tensile strain were measured. In addition, non-reinforced masonry members, masonry members reinforced with engineered cementitious composite, and masonry members in which glass fibers and wire mesh were separately reinforced with engineered cementitious composites were manufactured, and flexural strength and maximum displacement were measured. All specimens reinforced with engineered cementitious composite showed more than 16 times the effect of maximal strength compared to that of no reinforcement, and as a result of examining the crack shape, the energy dissipation ability was excellent, confirming the possibility of seismic reinforcement.

  • This research has the purpose to examine the potential of shell, a byproduct of maritime products to be utilized as alternative environment-friendly construction material by mixing and applying it with residual soit which is used as burial or filling material to recycle it. To that end, the research looked into the mechanical characteristics of shell through cyclic triaxial test by mixing it with residual soil. With the mixing ratios of shell of 5 groups set at 5.0%, 10.0%, 20.0%, 40.0% and 60.0%, the mixture soils was processed through a series of cyclic triaxial tests. And it was shown that liquefation resistance has limitation in the mixed soils with shell substitute content ratios exceeding 20.0%. To increase the liquefaction resistance of the mixed soil, this research has shown that addition of moderate amount of glass fibers would suffice.

  • This research presents the experimental and theoretical evaluations on circular steel-fiber-reinforced-concrete (SFRC) columns reinforced by glass-fiber-reinforced-polymer (GFRP) rebar under the axial compressive loading. Test programs were designed to investigate and compare the effect of different parameters on the structural behavior of columns by performing tests. Theses variables included conventional concrete (CC), fiber concrete (FC), steel/GFRP longitudinal rebars, and transversal rebars configurations. A total of 16 specimens were constructed and categorized into four groups in terms of different rebar-concrete configurations, including GFRP-rebar-reinforced-CC columns (GRCC), GFRP-rebar-reinforced-FC columns (GRFC), steel-rebar-reinforced-CC columns (SRCC) and steel-rebar- reinforced-FC columns (SRFC). Experimental observations displayed that failure modes and cracking patterns of four groups of columns were similar, especially in pre-peak branches of load-deflection curves. Although the average ultimate axial load of columns with longitudinal GFRP rebars was obtained by 17.9% less than the average ultimate axial load of columns with longitudinal steel rebars, the average axial ductility index (DI) of them was gained by 10.2% higher than their counterpart columns. Adding steel fibers (SFs) into concrete led to the increases of 7.7% and 6.7% of the axial peak load and the DI of columns than their counterpart columns with CC. The volumetric ratio had greater efficiency on peak loads and DIs of columns than the type of transversal reinforcement. A simple analytical equation was proposed to predict the axial compressive capacity of columns by considering the axial involvement of longitudinal GFRP rebars, volumetric ratio, and steel spiral/hoop rebar. There was a good correlation between test results and predictions of the proposed equation.

  • A high-performance reactive powder concrete (RPC) has been readied alongside river sand, with 1.25 mm particle size when under the condition of 80C steam curing. As a heat and sound insulation, expanded perlite aggregate (EPA) provides economic advantages in building. Concrete containing EPA is examined in terms of cement types (CEM II 32.5R and CEM I 42.5R), doses (0, 2%, 4% and 6%) as well as replacement rates in this research study. The compressive and density of concrete were used in the testing. At the end of the 28-day period, destructive and nondestructive tests were performed on cube specimens of 150 mm150 mm150 mm. The concrete density is not decreased with the addition of more perlite (from 45 to 60 percent), since the enlarged perlite has a very low barrier to crushing. To get a homogenous and fluid concrete mix, longer mixing times for all the mix components are necessary due to the higher amount of perlite. As a result, it is not suggested to use greater volumes of this aggregate in RPC. In the presence of de-icing salt, the lightweight RPC exhibits excellent freeze-thaw resistance (mass is less than 0.2 kg/m2). The addition of perlite strengthens the aggregate-matrix contact, but there is no apparent ITZ. An increased compressive strength was seen in concretes containing expanded perlite powder and steel fibers with good performance.
