  • Poly(ethylene terephthalate) was annealed at different temperature and pressure of supercritical carbon dioxide $(CO_2)$ using samples quenched from the melt. Crystallization and molecular relaxation behavior due to $CO_2-annealing$ of samples were investigated using differential scanning calorimetric and dynamic mechanical measurements. The glass transition and crystallization temperatures significantly decreased with increasing temperature and pressure of $CO_2$. The dynamic mechanical measurement of samples annealed at $150^{\circ}C$ in supercritical $CO_2$ showed three relaxation peaks, corresponding to existence of different amorphous regimes such as rigid, intermediate, and mobile domains. As a result, the mobile chains were likely to facilitate crystallization in supercritical state. It also led to the decreased modulus of $CO_2-annealed$ samples with increasing pressure.

  • A synthesized model of pultrusion process considering thermally induced deformatiion was established. The model was composed of liquid resin flow model thermo-chemical analysis and linear elastic analysis. in order to verify the above-mentioned models several experiments were performed. A laboratory scale pultrusion line was established and glass/polyester composites were fabricated. the experimental results were compared with the calculated ones. The model successfully could estimate degree of cure pulling force and amount of process-induced deformation.

  • The Membrane structure has a number of problems in the application of a fireproof code based on general buildings codes. Thus, the fireproof code of membrane structure is necessary to activate the construction of the membrane structure. Because it requires a systematic classification of fire retardant and flame proof performance of membrane material. Fire retardant and flame proof tests are conducted on membrane materials mostly used in current construction to propose the fire and flame retardant performance criteria of membrane materials. Fire and flame retardant tests results, PTFE membrane material with the glass fiber fabric have a limit-combustible performance. PVDF membrane material with the polyester fabric does not ensure the fire retardant performance, but this membrane material has the flame retardant performance of a thick fabric. Also, ETFE does not ensure the fire retardant performance, but this membrane material has the flame retardant of a thin fabric.

  • Phenolin resin, prepared form phenol and formaldehyde, is one of the oldest thermosetting resins available. Phenolic resins are cured via condensation polymerization with evolution of water, which in molding process is a big problem. The use of phenolic resins in glass fiber composites is growing, primarily due to their low flame spread, low smoke generation and low smoke toxicity properties. SMC of phenolics has been rearched since the 1986. The technology challenge was to match resin viscosity, handling and cure with those for the polyester SMC to avoid any special processing for fabricators and end users. Phenolic SMC was chosen because of the ease of molding to the required shape with light- weight, thin wall structure and with excellent fire protection.

  • A nonlinear optical hyperbranched polyester (PE-Azo/Hyper) was synthesized from 4-[N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl)amino-4'-formyl] azobenzene and cyanoacetic acid by a Knoevenagel polycondensation using 4-(dimethylamino) pyridine as a base. The resulting polymer was soluble in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide and 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone and could be processed into optical quality films by spin coating. The molecular weight was determined to be $M_w$=61,800 ($M_W/M_n{=1.86}$) by gel permeation chromatography using polystyrene as a standard. No melting point was detected by differential scanning Calorimeter, indicating that this polymer presents an amorphous state. It shows a glass transition temperature of $121^{\circ}C$. The second-order nonlinear optical coefficient $d_{33}$ of the poled polymer determined by the second harmonic generation at 1064 nm was 25.4 pm/V.

  • This study was undertaken to compare by Atomic Force Microscope the effects of various finishing and polishing instruments on surface roughness of filling and veneering composite resins. Seven composite resins were studied : Silux Plus (3M Dental Products, U.S.A.), Charisma (Heraeus Kulzer, Germany), Prisma THP (L.D.Caulk, Dentsply, U.S.A.), Photoclearfil (Kuraray, Japan), Cesead (Kuraray, Japan), Thermoresin LC (GC, Japan), Artglass (Heraeus Kulzer, Germany). Samples were placed and polymerized in holes (2mm thick and 8.5mm in diameter) machined in Teflon mold under glass plate, ensuring excess of material and moulded to shape with polyester matrix strip. Except control group (Polyester matrix strip), all experimental groups were finished and polishied under manufacturer's instructions. The finishing and polishing procedure were : carbide bur (E.T carbide set 4159, Komet, Germany), diamond bur (composite resin polishing bur set, GC, Japan), aluminum-oxide disc (Sof-Lex Pop-On, 3M Dental Products, U.S.A.), diamond-particle disc (Dia-Finish, Renfert Germany), white stone bur & rubber point( composite finishing kit, EDENTA, Swiss), respectively. Each specimens were evaluated for the surface roughness with Atomic Force Microscope (AutoProbe CP, Park Scientific Instruments, U.S.A.) under contact mode and constant height mode. The results as follows : 1. Except Thermoresin LC, all experimental composite resin groups showed more rougher than control group after finishing and polishing(p<0.1). 2. A surface as smooth as control group was obtained by $Al_{2}O_{3}$ disc all filling composite resin groups except Charisma and all veneering composite resin groups except Thermoresin LC(p<0.05). 3. In case of Thermoresin LC, there were no statistically significant differences before and after finishing and polishing(p>0.1). 4. Carbide bur, diamond bur showed rough surfaces in all composite resin groups, so these were inappropriate for the final polishing instruments.

  • In this study, various unsaturated polyester (UPE) resins were prepared from the condensation polymerization of mixtures of saturated (isophthalic acid : IPA) and unsaturated (maleic anhydride : MA) dibasic acids with propylene glycol (PG), neopentyl glycol (NPG). The critical surface tension (Υ$_{c}$) for the surface characteristics of a solid were estimated by Zisman plot, and the structure-property relationship was investigated by measuring the rheology of resins. The values of Υ$_{c}$ for glass of solid were 30.5 mNㆍm$^{-1}$ for UPE resin liquids. As the content of NPG in a PG/NPG glycol mixture increased, both the contact angle and the surface tension of the UPE resin liquids were found to decrease. The dynamic viscoelasticities of UPE resins with different glycol molar ratios were also measured. Shear rate dependence of viscosity and angular frequency dependence of storage, and loss modulus tended to decrease with increasing NPG content.

  • In this study, waterborne polyurethane (WPU)/nano ZnO was synthesized from various polyester polyols, 4,4-dicyclohexylmethane diisocyanate ($H_{12}MDI$), dimethylolpropionic acid (DMPA), triethylamine (TEA) and ethylenediamine (EDA), nano ZnO. The contents of metal oxide were varied from 0 to 1.0 wt% of total solid. The effects of nano ZnO contents and ionic contents in the WPU/nano ZnO on thermal, mechanical properties were studied. The glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of WPU/nano ZnO do not show a distinct tendency with incorporation of nano ZnO and the $T_g$ of WPU/nano ZnO a little increased with increase of DMPA contents. The tensile strength and 100% modulus increase and elongation at break decreases with increase of nano ZnO contents and DMPA contents.
