  • The antioxidant activities and flavonoid contents of the mulberry leaves and the ginko leaves teas were investigated. The antioxidant activities were examined by FRAP and DPPH radical scavenging assays, and total phenolic content and the flavonoid contents by HPLC were also determined. The ginko leaves tea showed the highest antioxidant activities and antioxidant contents, while the wild mulberry leaves tea showed the lowest. The antioxidant activities of the mixture tea of wild mulberry leaves and ginko leaves were increased more than the wild mulberry leaves tea. The flavonoid contents of the leaves(ginko, wild mulberry and mixture) powders were higher than those of infusion teas. Compared with wild mulberry tea, the mixture tea showed a little increase of flavonoid contents. The total phenolic contents and the flavonoid contents of the teas showed good correlations with their antioxidant activities, such as FRAP and DPPH radical scavenging activities(${\geq}0.8727$). The antioxidant capacities of wild mulberry leaves tea could be enhanced by the addition of the ginko leaves.

  • Sasang Constitutional Medicine, which argues that physiology, pathology, diagnosis, medical cure depend on individual's constitution, is different from a previous traditional oriental medicine. Recently the idea of fitted medicine, made by concepts based on genome project, is similar to constitution of Sasang Constitutional Medine in that both of them take the individual difference Into consideration. Sasang Constitutional Medicine is able to contribute to explanation of function of genes, because the same food acts differently on individual's constitution in Sasang Constitutional Medicine In 'Dongmu Yugo Yaksungga(동무유고 약성가)' it is said that A lotus, adlay, ginko nut, chest nut open stomach-Qi of Taeumin, help to digest, and give a better appetite. But this is different from the explanations of a previous traditional oriental medicine. All of them help to digest of Taeumin, but a adlay, ginko nut, chest nut distinguishing clearness-unclearness(淸濁) and spouting unclearness(濁)-Qi, has commonness of promoting digestion. But in the early days, a ginko nut is thought to be helpful to digest, the latter days, it is used for Mahwangjungchuntang which cures breast-stomachache(胸腹痛)and asthma(喘氣 哮喘病); It shows the change of recognition.

  • Hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury (HIRI) is linked with high mortality rate. Several agents have been developed so far to reduce the risk of HIRI. In this study, we investigated the effects of combined treatment of Ginko biloba leaves extract and vitamin C (GLEVC) on hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury. To explore the protective effects of GLEVC on HIRI rats model were tested. After the development of HIRI by using clamping method rats were then randomly divided into four groups. Different doses of GLEVC were administered in HIRI rat model. The level of ALT, AST, SOD and MDA content in serum were detected in HIRI groups. Moreover, the activity of SOD, content of MDA, and GSH in hepatic tissue were also examined. Bcl-2 and Bax protein expression were detected by immunohistochemical staining method. Compared with sham group, GLEVC has the protective effect on the HIRI-induced model. Level of ALT, AST, and MDA in blood were significantly lower in GLEVC group compared with HIRI-induced group. Moreover, SOD activity and GSH were increased in GLEVC group whereas MDA content was reduced by GLEVC treatment. Furthermore, HIRI-induced Bax protein was reduced upon GLEVC treatment, whereas Bcl-2 protein expression was enhanced. These results demonstrate that GLEVC treatment may provide potential ameliorative therapy by reducing damaged signaling mechanism in hepatic ischemia/reperfusion injury model.

  • This study measured the vitality of Pinus densiflora and Ginko biloba and analyzed the differences of vitality levels among trees based on artificial management. Research has shown that the mean value of cambial electrical resistance (CER) on Pinus densiflora was $14.9K{\Omega}$(between $8.5{\sim}37.5K{\Omega}$), and for Ginko biloba it was $13.5K{\Omega}$ (between 6.4 and $40.5K{\Omega}$). For the purpose of artificial management, over 50% of trees were covered up with soil and about 40% of trees were not protected by fence to enable growth spaces. It was seen that the CER of trees covered up with soil was significantly higher than that of trees which were not covered up with soil. These results indicate that it is necessary to remove the soil covering for effective management of monumental trees.

  • Amentoflavone, naturally occurring biflavonoid, isolated from the leaves of Ginko biloba, selectively inhibited human seceretory phospholipase $A_2$. This compound potently and irreversibly inhibited human group IIA in a dose dependent manner with an $IC_50$ about $3\;{\mu}M$. Amentoflavone inhibited phospholipase $A_2$ by a noncompetitive manner with the apparent Ki value of $1{\times}10^{-5}M$. In addition, the inhibitory activity of amentoflavone is rather specific against group IIA phospholipase $A_2$ than group IB phospholipase $A_2$. Furthermore, this compound strong inhibit histamine release from $A_{23187}$ treated rat peritoneal mast cells. These results indicate naturally occurring biflavonoid represents a novel anti-inflammatory agent.
