  • This study was conducted to identify the distribution characteristics of small village wetlands in Geumsan County, an inland mountain zone, and comparing with Seocheon County, a coastal plain area with different ecological environment characteristics. Using Arc-GIS (v10.1) the village wetland code was extracted to derive the possible location of the village wetland, and the final distribution of the village was obtained by performing indoor judging work based on satellite images, aerial photographs, topographical maps, Korea Land Information System (KLIS), land use level, land cover degree (division), and land use status by local surveying and indoor analyzing. Although Geumsan County (576.66km2) is more than 60% larger than Seocheon County (358.04km2), 607 villages in Geumsan County and 570 villages in Seocheon County are capable of making similar levels of 106.5% of wetlands, but only a fraction of those in Seocheon County were found to be 67.6%. The density of the village wetlands was much lower than that of Seocheon County, a coastal plain area, because there were many mountainous areas in Geumsan County, and most of the wetlands temporarily created for water supply were removed during the analysis phase of the Jeongsa Image, so the actual wetlands of the village were judged to be only two-thirds different from those of Seocheon County.

  • This study was attempted to provide a scientific basis for the problem of location selection by spatial scale for efficient promotion of projects related to green care farm complex. Location potential assessment system in local government scale consists of two major components from demand-side and supply-side consideration. The demand-side aspect considered the characteristics of potential users, while supply-side aspect used total 18 indices over 8 divisions under 3 fields. For the location potential assessment in district scale, total 8 indices under 3 major divisions were considered based on biological, physical, social, and economic environment. The application results of the location potential evaluation system in local government scale(excluding metropolitan cities) showed high location potential in southern Gyeonggi Province and near Busan Metropolitan City. As a result of applying the district-scale location potential evaluation system to Geumsan-gun, Geumsan-eup, Chubu-myeon, and Jewon-myeon have high potential. Further studies to improve the applicability of the developed indices are recommended by enhancing assessment indices, complementing base data, and reinforcing with spatial analysis.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the flora of Geumseongsan Mt. (Geumsan-gun Chungnam). The vascular plants were collected 30 different times, from July 2015 to June of 2016. The results showed that there were 483 taxa in total, included 112 families, 358 genera, 417 species, 8 subspecies, 48 varieties, 8 forms and 2 hybrids. Of these vascular plants, red-list species managed by the Ministry of Environment of Korea included 3 species, and 8 species Korea Forest Service. The endemic species to Korea were identified to 4 species. There were 29 taxa specially designated floristic regional indicator plants by the Ministry of Environment of Korea. The alien plants were identified as 42 taxa, and their naturalization ratio was 8.6%. Usage of 483 taxa were consisted of 190 taxa (39.3%) of edible plants, 162 taxa (33.5%) of pasture plants, 154 taxa (31.8%) of medicinal plants, 58 taxa (12.0%) of ornamental plants, 14 taxa (2.8%) of timber plants, 5 taxa (1.0%) of fiber plants, and 2 taxa (0.4%) of industrial plants.

  • Fourteen new records of yeasts were screened from one hundred thirty-three yeasts strains which were isolated from wild flowers in east, west and south coast near areas and inland areas, Korea. Candida silvae, Cryptococcus terrestris and Auriculibuller fuscus were newly isolated from wild flowers collected at Donghae and Andong, respectively. Candida quercitrusa, Hanseniaspora opuntiae, Sporobolomyces carnicolor, Candida saopaulonensis and Sporobolomyces phaffii were newly isolated from wild flowers in Geumsan-gun and Taean-gun in Chungcheongnam-do, respectively. Candida oleophila and Jaminaea angkoriensis were newly identified from flowers in Yesan-gun and Hannaella zeae was also newly identified from flowers of Daecheon. Hanseniaspora vineae and two other yeast strains including Pseudozyma hubeiensis were newly isolated and identified from flowers collected at Gwangju and Wando-gun, respectively. Morphological and physiological characteristics of their new recorded yeasts were investigated.

  • In this study, we examined arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal (AMF) community structure colonizing field-cultivated ginseng roots according of different ages, such as 1- to 5-year-old plant, collected from Geumsan-gun, Korea. A total of seven AMF species namely, Funnelliformis caledonium, F. moseae, Gigaspora margarita, Paraglomus laccatum, P. occultum, Rhizophagus irregularis, and Scutellospora heterogama were identified from the roots using cloning, PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism and sequence analysis of the large subunit region in rDNA. AMF species diversity in the ginseng roots decreased with the increase in root age because of the decreased species evenness. In addition, the community structures of AMF in the roots became more uniform. These results suggest that the age of ginseng affects mycorrhizal colonization and its community structure.

  • The genus Ephedrus Haliday, 1833 is a large taxon of Aphidiinae, consisting of 48 valid species in the world. This genus is considered to be important as a biological control agency, which includes solitary koinobiont parasitoids on aphids. One of its interesting characteristics is both male and female have 11-segmented antennae. In previous study, this genus was subdivided into three subgenus, Breviephedrus, Ephedrus and Fovephedrus, based on molecular and morphological characters. In this study, one Ephedrus species is firstly recorded from South Korea. Since it has been collected from Geumsan-gun in 2005 and deposited as dried specimen at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Netherland, we recently confirmed it. Description and illustrations of the E. lacertosus are provided.

  • This study was conducted to classify the vegetation structure of the Geumsan in Namhae-gun. Using the phytosociological method and DCCA ordination, the vegetation was classified into 10 communities of natural forests (Quercus serrata, Carpinus tschonoskii, Q.mongolica, Pinus densiflora, P.thunbergii, C. turczaninowii, Q. variablis, Zelkova serrata, C.laxifora and Corylopsis gotoana var. coreana) and 2 communities of plantation forests (Chamaecyparis obtusa and Cryptomeria japonica). Among the communities other than the plantation forests, the importance value of Q. serrata (45.7) was found to be the highest. According to the results of DBH analysis among the species with high importance values, Q. serrata, Q. mongolica and C. tschonoskii showed normal patterns in the size-frequency distribution, suggesting that these species will continue to hold their current dominance. The average soil pH in the communities ranged from 4.28 to 4.76. The results of DCCA ordination analysis showed that Q. serrata was evenly distributed in the high and low elevation habitats. P. thunbergii and P. densiflora communities were mainly distributed in the lowest elevation habitats on the southern slope.

  • This study aims at finding blood glucose levels in rural residents and factors influencing their glucose levels. For these purposes, the researcher surveyed 1,857 residents in a rural area, Geumsan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do between January and February 2006. Consequently, as major factors influencing fasting glucose and 2-h plasma glucose, it was indicated that insulin, C-reative protein, gamma-glutamy transferase, blood pressure levels, and age were important variables, and thus in light of this result, in order to prevent diabetes, it is very important to control obesity and blood pressure and also it is needed to establish national health management plans fur preventing and controling diabetes and its complications fur the aging society
