Influence of Occupational Stress and Burnout on Turnover Intention of Caregivers in Geriatric Hospitals (노인병원 간병인의 직무 스트레스와 소진이 이직의도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was identify the influences of occupational stress and burnout on turnover intention of caregivers in geriatric hospitals. Methods: The data were collected from 176 caregivers working at three geriatric hospitals located in Gyeonggi province. A self-reported questionnaires was used to assess the level of occupational stress, burnout and turnover intention. The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple regression by SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: The turnover intention was positively correlated with occupational stress(r=.438, p<.01) and burnout(r=.418, p<.01). The influencing factors of turnover intention were occupational stress(${\beta}$=.290, p<.001), burnout(${\beta}$=.253, p=.001) and education level(${\beta}$=.182, p=.006). Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that it is necessary to develop stress management program so that caregivers in geriatric hospitals can reduce occupational stress and burnout.

Factors Affecting Burnout of Caregivers in Geriatric Hospitals (노인요양병원 간병인의 소진에 대한 영향요인)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to identify the factors affecting burnout of caregivers in geriatric hospitals. Methods: Data were collected from 266 formal caregivers working at Korean geriatric hospitals using self-report questionnaires between May 16 and June 30, 2016. The measured variables were burnout, emotional labor, job stress, job satisfaction, and self-efficacy experienced by caregivers. T-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients, and multiple regression were employed for data analysis. Results: The results indicated that emotional labor and job stress significantly influenced burnout of caregivers in geriatric hospitals; the explanatory power of the model was 27.3%. Conclusion: Based on the study results, we suggest further investigation of factors influencing burnout, and the development of strategies to prevent burnout by reducing emotional labor and job stress experienced by caregivers.

  • Nowadays, Korean society is quickly transforming into an aging society. There are lots of problems resulting from old aged society. First of all, in the case of medical service, it is an urgent task to find out what is the most proper care for the elderly in order to reduce medical expenses. It can be said that the geriatric hospital has to be designed to give adequate medical service to the elderly. However, it is hard to find out what the differences is between the general hospital and the geriatric hospital. Especially, the plan of the patient room has to reflect thoughtful consideration relating to characteristics of the elderly due to the fact that there is a close connection between the patient room and residence. Therefore this study aims to suggest the guideline and the plan of the patient room for the elderly.

Relationship between Knowledge, Stress, and Nursing Performance about Care for Delirium in Geriatric Hospital Nurses (노인요양병원 간호사의 섬망에 대한 지식, 섬망간호스트레스 및 섬망간호수행간의 관계)

  • Purpose. The purpose of this study was to investigate knowledge, stress and nursing performance about care for delirium in geriatric hospital nurses. Methods. For this study, data were collected from 242 nurses employed at geriatric hospitals with the capacity of more than 100 beds which were located in A, P and Y cites. Frequency analysis, t-test and one-way ANOVA were utilized to analyze the data and Scheffe test was used to conduct post-hoc tests. Results. Nurses showed significant differences in the level of Knowledge, as well as terminal care performance by marital status, nursing experience. A significant relationship was found between knowledge, stress and Delirium care performance. Conclusion. This study found nurses perform delirium care with a high level of stress but with insuffiecient understanding, and thus, showed great needs for related training. Such findings can be useful to develop educational programs to improve knowledge on delirium and plans to reduce stress from delirium for geriatric hospital nurses.

Nursing Performance and Innovative Behavior as Factors Affecting the Self-leadership of Geriatric Hospital Nurses (요양병원 간호사의 셀프리더십이 간호업무수행과 혁신행동에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to identify the effects of nursing performance and innovative behavior on the self-leadership of geriatric hospital nurses. Methods : The participants in this study were 206 nurses working in geriatric hospitals in Busan, Ulsan and Yangsan City. Data were collected from October to November, 2015. A structured questionnaire was used for the data collection, and the data were analyzed with the SPSS/WIN program. Results : Nursing performance and innovative behavior positively correlated with self-leadership. The most significant predictors of self-leadership were nursing performance and innovative behavior. Conclusions : These findings suggest that nursing performance and innovative behavior were linked to self-leadership. The results of this study can be used to help develop self-leadership programs.

  • Dentist-patient communication has long been recognized as an important part of dental care. It has many positive outcomes, including reducing patient dental anxiety and increasing patient satisfaction and patient compliance. Above all, the need to communicate through conversation with dentist must be perceived as a basic dental patient's need for good clinical outcomes. In the future, increasing geriatric dental patients will pose challenges to dental profession. Factors influencing dentist-geriatric patient communication should be researched and relevant techniques should be shared among dentists.

  • As the population of the elderly has increased and the nuclear family has become popular, the demands of long-term care services for the elderly have arisen. However, a lot of patients, who need long-term care services, are in general hospitals because existing facilities for the elderly are not sufficient in terms of both quality and quantity. In this study, it is considered a good alternative to set geriatric wards, offering long-term care services for the elderly, in general hospitals. This study shows an analysis of geriatric wards in general hospitals, especially, based on the case of N hospital, and suggests the spacial elements of geriatric wards, which is different from other wards in the aspects of space program and operating system.

50 Years of the Korean Geriatrics Society

  • The Korean Geriatrics Society was founded on October 3, 1968. Over the 50 years since then, the Society has incessantly strived to stay attuned to the aging society and to achieve an increasingly greater research impact in the field of gerontology and geriatric medicine. The Society has passed through periods of preparation for a leap forward, followed by rapid growth, expansion, and maturity. As a result, the Society has gained a firm foothold at home and abroad as a leading research society for both qualitative and quantitative achievements in geriatric medicine. At this juncture, with an ultra-aging society being just around the corner, we are celebrating its 50th anniversary and anticipating our second half-century with great enthusiasm about our mission and role as a leading geriatric research organization.

  • Objectives: This study analyzes whether the leisure activities satisfaction of elderly and older elderly patients differs with population sociology characteristics for the leisure activities services provided by geriatric hospitals, and to provide basic information to make reasonable decisions. Methods: Difference Analysis of the difference (T-test, ANOVA) in leisure activities satisfaction was conducted for the elderly and older elderly patients hospitalized in nine hospitals. Results: First, In the planning stage of leisure activity program, it is necessary to consider the tendency of men and women to prefer gender-based leisure activity service. Second, It was found that old elderly patients were more in number than elderly patients. Third, managers of geriatric hospitals in Busan and Kyungnam area should consider the needs of the patients in the planning and implementation of leisure activities and improve their leisure activity programs or develop more programs for better customer satisfaction.
