Methods: Knowledge of the falls targeting 350 people who work in the nurse elderly hospital, located at J city, attitudes about fall prevention activity data were collected for nurses working in the geriatric hospital. The collected data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheff's test, correlation coefficients. Results: Attitude and prevention activities of fall showed that there is a correlation. Showed that age was a significant effect on falls prevention activities age 45 years and olde and attitude. The higher the fall prevention activities were found to be low. Conclusion: In relationship between knowledge, attitudes and prevention activities regarding falls, knowledge about falls had no correlation with attitude and prevention activities and a correlation was found between attitudes and prevention activity regarding falls. Accordingly, it is required to implement training program to improve nurse's attitude to falls, and repetitive fall prevention training and education is expected to contribute to increasing the practice of fall prevention activity.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to investigate the correlation between injury and injury severity score (ISS) in geriatric traffic accident patients transported by 119 emergency medical technicians (EMTs). Methods: The subjects were 240 traffic accident patients over 65 years old transported by 119 rescue services emergency departments in Busan from January 1, 2014 to August 31, 2015. Results: ISS increased in motorcycle traffic accidents (p=.026), truck injuries (p=.005), and head and neck injury (p<.001). Vital signs were evaluated by 119 rescue EMT. ISS increased in cases of unresponsive unconsciousness (p<.001), hypotension (p=.001), and bradycardia (p<.001). The need for bleeding control and dressing by the EMTs increased ISS significantly (p=.022). Conclusion: In the initial evaluation of geriatric traffic patients, ISS can increase in motor cycle accidents and truck injuries. Due to high ISS, patients with head and neck injury, chest injury, hypotension, or tachycardia should be transferred to advanced level hospitals.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify correlations among the continence function, cognitive function, and activities of daily living(ADL) in elderly male patients with dementia in geriatric hospitals. The subjects were 64 patients aged 65 or above who were diagnosed with dementia among the hospitalized male patients in a geriatric hospital. For the subjects' cognitive function, a questionnaire developed for the Korean Mini Mental Status Examination(K-MMSE) was used. For the continence function and ADL, data were collected using a patient evaluation table. As a result, a lower level of cognitive function resulted in corresponding higher levels of dependence in all items of ADL except bathing(p<.05), and a lower level of cognitive function led to corresponding declines in the continence function(bowel control, bladder control)(p<.01). In addition, a higher level of dependence in ADL resulted in corresponding higher levels of difficulty in bowel and bladder control(p<.01). This study showed correlations among the cognitive function, ADL, and continence function of elderly men with dementia. The results of this study may be used as basic data for the management and treatment of hospitalized elderly male patients with dementia in geriatric hospitals.

  • Purpose: Increase in suicide rate for senior citizens which has become widespread in our society today. It is not a normal social phenomenon and is beyond the danger level. The contents of this study include Korean senior citizens' suicide related risk factors and warning signs, and the development of a simple Geriatric Suicide Risk Scale. Methods: This study is Methodological Research to verify reliability and validity of the Geriatric Suicide Risk Scale according to the tool development process suggested by Devellis (2012). Results: For predictive validity assessment, high suicide screening accuracy was showed with an Area under the ROC curve (AUC) of .93. For the optimal cutoff point of 11, sensitivity was 93.9%, and specificity, 75.7% which are excellence levels. Cross validity for assessment of generalization possibility showed the Area under the ROC curve (AUC) as .82 and in case of a cutoff point of 11, sensitivity was 73.7%, and specificity, 65.9%. Conclusion: When it comes to practical nursing, it is significant that the Korean Geriatric Suicide Risk Scale has high reliability and validity through adequate tool development and the tool assessment step to select degree of suicide risk of senior citizens. Also, it can be easily applied and does not take a long time to administer. Further, it can be used by health care personnel or the general public.

With respect to the general characteristics of the participants, knowledge on hand hygiene moments showed a statistically significant difference according to clinical career(p=.001), and existence of infection controller or infection control office in the nursing home(p=.038). Compliance showed differences according to clinical career(p=.023), existence of infection controller or infection control office in the nursing home(p=.033), and training experience in hand hygiene(number of times/year)(p=.035). Knowledge and compliance showed a statistically significant positive correlation(r=.90, p<.001). Conclusions: It is necessary to develop and operate an infection control education program that can improve the knowledge and awareness of hand hygiene moments and considers the individual characteristics geriatric hospitals's nursing care workers.
