Dynamic properties are pivotal in soil analysis, yet their experimental determination is hampered by complex methodologies and the need for costly equipment. This study aims to predict dynamic soil properties using static properties that are relatively easier to obtain, employing machine learning techniques. The static properties considered include soil cohesion, friction angle, water content, specific gravity, and compressional strength. In contrast, the dynamic properties of interest are the velocities of compressional and shear waves. Data for this study are sourced from 26 boreholes, as detailed in a geotechnical investigation report database, comprising a total of 130 data points. An importance analysis, grounded in the random forest algorithm, is conducted to evaluate the significance of each dynamic property. This analysis informs the prediction of dynamic properties, prioritizing those static properties identified as most influential. The efficacy of these predictions is quantified using the coefficient of determination, which indicated exceptionally high reliability, with values reaching 0.99 in both training and testing phases when all input properties are considered. The conventional method is used for predicting dynamic properties through Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and compared the outcomes with this technique. The error ratio has decreased by approximately 0.95, thereby validating its reliability. This research marks a significant advancement in the indirect estimation of the relationship between static and dynamic soil properties through the application of machine learning techniques.
Magnetic method is rapid, cheap and simple geophysical exploration technique, and has wide range of applications such as resources prospecting, geological structure investigation and even geotechnical and environmental problems. Especially, aeromagnetics gives fundamental and useful geoscientific data fnr not only assessment of potential resources, but also national land planning. Magnetic method, perhaps the oldest geophysical technique, was relatively early introduced into Korea. Documents during Japanese occupation says that magnetic method was used for exploring metallic ore deposits and hot spring, and that a geomagnetic observatory was operated. From mid 1950's, after Korean War, magnetic explorations for natural resources such as metallic ore, uranium, coal, and groundwater were intensively executed for industrialization. Apache aeromagnetic survey project during $1958{\sim}1959$ and its ground follow-up surveys are typical and important cases in those days. Magnetic survey techniques were rapidly advanced during 1970's and 1980's with improvements of instruments, growth of geophysical manpower, and availability of computers. The national aeromagnetic mapping project by KIGAM in 1981 showed the improved technical capability of those days. Decline of mining industry since mid 1980's moved the exploration objects from traditional resources to new ones such as groundwater and geothermal resources, and applications to investigation of geological structure were revived. Recently appeared applications such as natural hazard assessment, and engineering and environmental studies increased the magnetic method's utility in the realm of exploration.
This study evaluates the usefulness and capability of surface electrical resistivity technique for identifying the weak zones or subsurface cavities in karst area with limestone formation. Weak zones or cavities near surface can be potentially dangerous and several problems are associated with collapse of roads or buildings accompanied by subsidence phenomena. In this paper, both two and three dimensional resistivity investigation were conducted to investigate subsidence along a road in Yongweol-ri, Muan-gun, South Korea. The results of the resistivity survey using dipole-dipole array provide a clear view of the weathered regolith, the distribution of weak zones or cavities and bedrock. Several low resistivity areas were identified and subsequent drilling led to the discovery of several weak zone or clay-filled underground cavities. The drilling results show excellent correlation with the resistivity images. It is illustrated, the ability of electrical technique to produce high resolution images of subsurface, which are useful for subsidence assessment. Also the results of this study have demonstrated that two and three dimensional electrical resistivity surveys are useful for delineating the subsidence area. Based on resistivity imaging, the map of hazardous zone has been developed.
In this study, the Singal fault zone in the Gyeonggi massif is identified in the Kiheung area. Geotechnical investigations were carried out to locate and characterize of the Singal fault zone in the Kiheung reservoir area. The N-S striking Shingal fault is known to be a Riedel-type strike-slip fault within the Choogaryung rift. Along the fault zone, 62 bore holes were drilled and electrical resistivity survey of about 11km, and vibroseis seismic refraction and reflection survey of about 500m were done. From the result of investigations, it is found that the fault zone, consisting mainly of gouge and breccia, has maximum width of 300 meters with anastomosing geometry of secondary fractures developed subparallel to the fault zone. We interpret these geometric features to be the result of structural development of flower-structure type at the restraining band of strike-slip fault. However, there are uncertainties of this interpretation because there are virtually no outcrops in the area. Further investigation to understand geometric features and linkage style of the fault zone.
Seabed may undergo large excess pore water pressure in the case of long duration of high wave loading. This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. Thus, it is necessary to develop a numerical technique which can precisely evaluate the dynamic response of seabed due to wave action. In this study, a new numerical technique named mixed model (2D NIT & FLIP models) was proposed. The dynamic wave pressure and water flow velocity acting on the boundary between seabed and the wave field was estimated using 2D-NIT model. This result was used as input data in FLIP program for investigation of dynamic response of seabed. To secure the reliability of the mixed model, the numerical analysis results of the mixed model were compared with Yamamoto's solution and Chang's experiment results. The comparison results indicated that there were some differences between them, but the general trend of the effective stress increment and the excess pore water pressure along the depth of seabed was similar to each other. Thus, this study clearly supports the plausibility of the numerical analysis of the mixed model.

For the bearing capacity evaluation, dynamic pile tests instead of static pile tests have been commonly used in embedded piles, which are known to have low noise and low vibration construction method. The objective of this study is to analyze the bearing capacity and penetration behaviors of embedded piles, which are constructed in different ground conditions, by using force and velocity signals obtained in the final blows during construction of embedded piles. For the dynamic pile analyses, the CAse Pile Wave Analysis Program (CAPWAP) and Wave Equation Analysis of Piles (WEAP) have been commonly used. In this study, the CAPWAP and WEAP are used for the analyses of the dynamic pile tests, which are conducted on embedded piles. The input values, output values, and force-velocity graphs of CAPWAP determined by analyzing the measured force-velocity signals are investigated. In addition, similar force-velocity singals are obtained from the WEAP by analyzing the input values of the WEAP. Considering the subsurface investigation results around the pile tips, if the N-value increases exponentially along the depth, toe quake value should be small, and therefore large bearing capacity is identified. On the contrary, if the N-value increases linearly, the bearing capacity is small because of large toe quake value. Furthermore, the stiffness of hammer cushion and pile cushion, which is difficult to find correct values, is recommended lower than 500 kN/mm. This study demonstrates that the results of WEAP may be similar to those of CAPWAP and the WEAP can be used to estimate the bearing capacity of embedded piles.
An investigation of a void and a loose layer of the ground is essential in order to prevent the losses of life and properties caused by subsidence and sinkage of the ground. Recently, studies on the ground penetrating radar survey have been actively conducted in order to estimate the void and the loose layer of the ground. However, an error can be committed by contrarily predicting a dense ground and a loose layer because the ground penetrating radar estimates an interface depth between geo-materials that have different electrical impedances. In this study, a loose ground depth is estimated using the characteristics of the reflected electromagnetic wave obtained from the ground penetrating radar survey. To gather the signals according to the loose ground depths, the ground penetrating radar survey is conducted on a field which underwent a huge ground settlement. In addition, the dynamic cone penetration test is performed to verify the result of the loose ground depth estimation from the ground penetrating radar survey. From the analysis of the reflection characteristics of the electromagnetic wave, a phase of an electromagnetic wave reflected from a denser soil layer is found to be identical with that of the first measured signal. On the other hand, a phase of an electromagnetic wave reflected from the loose soil layer is found to be opposed to that of the first detected signal. The comparison between the dynamic cone penetration index and electromagnetic signals by the ground penetrating radar shows that the estimated depth of the loose or dense layer is perfectly matched with a high reliability. The ground penetrating radar survey and the signal analysis performed in this study can be used not only for the survey of interface depth between the discontinuity layers but also for the estimation of the loose layer.
Abstract The stabilization by lime or Portland cement has long been the most commonly used methods for clay soil. But it wart the purpose of this reserch to define the effectiveness malt content on unconfined compressive strength of limeflay mixture and cementrlay mixture. From result of a laboratary investigation, saInt content in sample soil was not concernd with variation of PH value. PH value of lime 10% mixture and of cement 10% mixture were near 12.4, 11.6 respectively. In case of more than 7 curing days, PH value and Ca++ion concentration were decreased with increasing curing time. Also the result of X-ray difflection analysib for stabilized soil by admixture 10% in 90 curing days showed that the diffrection intensity of Tobermorite and Ettringite and other reaction products was smaller in the case of addition of salt 8% than malt 0% in stabilized soil. When lime-soil mixture and cement-boil mixture were cured in 2$0^{\circ}C$ and 5$^{\circ}C$, 2$0^{\circ}C$ cured mizture produced significantly higher compressive strength than 5t cured mixture and air dry curing sample produced higher than cured sample in water. The addition of salt 2~4% in conjuntion with lime or cement may accelerate strenth gain or not prevent front However, the addition of salt 8% prevent from strength gams.
In this study the occurrence and mineralogical characteristics of clay minerals from the Munhyun-dong landslide area in Pusan city were examined by XRD, SEM, and chemical analyses. Several types of clay minerals such as halloysite, vermiculite, mica/vermiculite interstratified mineral, vermiculite/smectite interstratified mineral, kaolinite and illite are found abundantly in the area. The occurrence of clay minerals suggest that they have been formed by weathering of andesite which is the bedrock of the area. It is believed that halloysite was formed in the early stage of weathering, and vermiculite, mica/vermiculite interstratified mineral and mica/vermiculite interstratified mineral were formed in the middle stage, and finally, kaolinite was formed. The clay minerals occurring in the central part of the landsliding area and within the slip surface are dominated by expandable minerals such as halloysite, vermiculite and vermiculite/smectite interstratified mineral. These clay minerals expand by absorbing water and effectively decrease the shear resistance of the rock mass, and therefore, they could be an important factor for the landslide. The analyses of geology and mineralogical characteristics of the area suggest that the landslide was caused by combination of various factors including steep slope, heavy rainfall, abundant joints, alteration of the rocks, and occurrence of expandable clay minerals. The result of this study suggests that the investigation for the prevention of possible landslide must include the examination of clay mineralogy as well as the site geology.
A geotechnical research including observation of the movement of wall-structure, monitoring of groundwater, non-destructive geophysical investigation was conducted to workout a countermeasure to conserve the Muryong Royal Tomb which is the most extinguishable cultural property of the Baekje dynasty. Movement of the structure of Muryong Royal Tomb generally arises to the front chamber and its amplitude in a rainy season is twice of that in the dry season. It represents serious problem concerned about structural safety of the royal tomb in the rainy season. Movement of wall-structure is caused due to the rain infiltration through cracks in the quicklime layer within the soil mound on the top of the royal tomb and the change of the temperature inside of the tomb. Cracks found around the Muryong Royal Tomb are mostly spread in NW and SE of the tomb structure and it harmonizes with the direction of movement of wall-structure of the Muryong Royal Tomb. Counter-plans for safety and prevention of water-leakage that obstruct the movement of wall structures towards the direction of south are very important for the conservation of Muryong Royal Tomb. After getting rid of the cause of structural change by the restoration of the front chamber of the Muryong Royal Tomb, it needs to reinforce the quicklime layer for prevention of waterleak.
