To analyze the aerosol dynamics in severe accidents of LMFBR, a new computer code entitled MCAD (Multicomponent Aerosol Dynamics) has been developed. The code can treat two component aerosol system using relative collision probability of each particles as sequences of accident scenarios. Coagulation and removal mechanisms incorporating Brownian diffusion and gravitational sedimentation are included in this model. In order to see the effect of particle geometry, the code makes use of the concept of density correction factor and shape factors. The code is verified using the experimental result of NSPP-300 series and compared to other code. At present, it fits the result of experiment well and agrees to the existing code. The input variables included are very uncertain. Hence, it requires uncertainty and sensitivity analysis as a supplement to code development. In this analysis, 14 variables are selected to analyze. The input variables are compounded by experimental design method and Latin hypercube sampling. Their results are applied to Response surface method to see the degree of regression. The stepwise regression method gives an insight to which variables are significant as time elapse and their reasonable ranges. Using Monte Carlo Method to the regression model of LHS, the confidence level of the results of MCAD and their variables is improved.

The construction project of the Kijang research reactor (KJRR), which is the second research reactor in Korea, has been launched. The KJRR was designed to use, for the first time, U-Mo fuel. Plate-type U-7 wt.% Mo/Al-5 wt.% Si, referred to as U-7Mo/Ale5Si, dispersion fuel with a uranium loading of $8.0gU/cm^3$, was selected to achieve higher fuel efficiency and performance than are possible when using $U_3Si_2/Al$ dispersion fuel. To qualify the U-Mo fuel in terms of plate geometry, the first miniplates [HANARO Miniplate (HAMP-1)], containing U-7Mo/Al-5Si dispersion fuel ($8gU/cm^3$), were fabricated at the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and recently irradiated at HANARO. The PIE (Post-irradiation Examination) results of the HAMP-1 irradiation test were analyzed in depth in order to verify the safe in-pile performance of the U-7Mo/Al-5Si dispersion fuel under the KJRR irradiation conditions. Nondestructive analyses included visual inspection, gamma spectrometric mapping, and two-dimensional measurements of the plate thickness and oxide thickness. Destructive PIE work was also carried out, focusing on characterization of the microstructural behavior using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Electron probe microanalysis was also used to measure the elemental concentrations in the interaction layer formed between the U-Mo kernels and the matrix. A blistering threshold test and a bending test were performed on the irradiated HAMP-1 miniplates that were saved from the destructive tests. Swelling evaluation of the U-Mo fuel was also conducted using two methods: plate thickness measurement and meat thickness measurement.
This study presented the evaluation of the stamp forming process for L-shape CF/PEKK thermoplastic composite using the finite element model. The formability of three different trimming allowances has been examined for representative product geometry. The results showed that those manufactured by high trimming allowance showed more excellent formability in those areas. Moreover, the effects of the trimming allowances on the stress, thickness, wrinkle distributions of thermoplastic composites fabricated with the stamp forming process were evaluated. The comparison of the simulation and experimental results for the thickness and wrinkle distributions proved the accuracy of the stamp forming model. The crystallinity of the composite was performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The void content of the composite was evaluated by matrix digestion. Then, the fabricated structure was characterized and achieved high quality in crystallinity and void content. Consequently, the presented FEM modeling shows excellent potential for application in the aircraft product design process. This pragmatic approach could efficiently offer a valuable solution for the thermoplastic composite manufacturing field.

Thin-walled tubes have been widely used as energy absorbing devices because they are light and have high energy-absorption efficiency. However, the downside is that conventional thin-walled tubes usually exhibit an excessive initial peak crushing force (IPCF) and a large fluctuation in the load-displacement curve, and thus lack stability as energy absorbing devices. Corrugated tubes were introduced to reduce IPCF and to increase the stability of collision energy-absorbing devices. Since the performance of corrugated tubes is highly influence by geometry, design optimization methods can be utilized to optimize the performance of corrugated tubes. In this paper, we utilize shape design optimization based on an adaptive surrogate model for crashworthiness analysis. The amplitude and wavelength of the corrugation, as well as curvature changes in the features, are the design variables. A morphing methodology is adopted to perform shape design parameterization. Through numerical examples, we compare optimal design results based on the adaptive surrogate model, with optimal results based on conventional surrogate models, and we show that direct optimal design methods produce more efficient results.

Evaporative humidification using a humidifying element is widely used for humidification of a building or a data center. The performance of a humidifying element is commonly expressed as humidification efficiency, which is used independent of air temperature, humidity and water temperature. In this study, a series of tests were conducted at two air conditions (data center and commercial building) using two different humidifying elements (cellulose/PET and Glasdek) changing the frontal air velocity and water temperature. Results showed that the measured humidification efficiency was dependent on the air condition and water temperature. In fact, even dehumidification occurred at the inlet of the humidifying element at the air condition of commercial building. The reason was due to the inlet water temperature, which was lower than the dew point air temperature. As the difference between the inlet water and the dew point air temperature increased, the humidification efficiency decreased. This suggest that proper thermal model should account for the inlet region, where the amount of moisture transfer may be different from the other part of the humidification element. A simple analysis on the thermal performance of the cellulose/PET humidification element showed that the Sherwood number was adequately predicted, whereas the friction factor was ovepredicted, probably due to the simplification of the channel geometry and the neglection of the water film on the element surface.

Take-overs occur in autonomous vehicles at levels 3 and 4 based on SAE. For safe take-over, it is necessary to set the time required for diverse drivers to complete take-over in various road conditions. In this study, take-over time and stabilization characteristics were measured to secure safety of take-over in autonomous vehicle. To this end, a virtual driving simulator was used to set up situations similar to those on real expressways. Fifty drivers with various sexes and ages participated in the experiment where changes in traffic volume and geometry were applied to measure change in takeover time and stabilization characteristics according to various road conditions. Experimental results show that the average take-over time was 2.3 seconds and the standard deviation was 0.1 second. As a result of analysis of stabilization characteristics, there was no difference in take-over stabilization time due to the difference of traffic volume, and there was a significant difference by curvature changes.
The performance of drip irrigation devices depends on flow uniformity related to the function of pressure compensation. The flow uniformity can be secured when the internal fluid pressures at the positions of the flow holes are maintained uniformly. The pressure compensation effect of the drip irrigation devices can be optimized with the combination of soft silicon and labyrinth structures. However, for a drip irrigation devices composed of only hard labyrinth structures, the flow rate is changed largely with the length and the internal geometry of the labyrinth structure. Although a drip irrigation devices with only hard labyrinth structures can be fabricated simply, the changes of flow rates with internal fluid pressures are much larger than those of the drip irrigation devices with soft silicon. Because the drip irrigation devices with only labyrinth structures can be utilized widely through the optimization of the fluid pressure, the length of the structures, and the cross-sectional area of them, the study on the optimization can play an important role for enhancing the performance of the drip irrigation devices. In this study, experimental and numerical studies for investigating the performance of the drip irrigation devices had been conducted. In the experiments and numerical calculations(CFD), the variable parameters were the lengths of the labyrinth structures(#1~#8) and the fluid pressures(0.5~3.0 bar).
There have been many applications to observe Earth using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) since it could acquire Earth observation data without reference to weathers or local times. However researches about digital map generation using SAR have hardly been performed due to complex raw data processing. In this study, we suggested feasibility of producing digital map using SAR stereo images. We collected two sets, which include an ascending and a descending orbit acquisitions respectively, of KOMPSAT-5 stereo dataset. In order to suggest the feasibility of digital map generation from SAR stereo images, we performed 1) rational polynomial coefficient transformation from radar geometry, 2) digital resititution using KOMPSAT-5 stereo images, and 3) validation using digital-map-derived reference points and check points. As the results of two models, root mean squared errors of XY and Z direction were less than 1m for each model. We discussed that KOMPSAT-5 stereo image could generated 1:25,000 digital map which meets a standard of the digital map. The proposed results would contribute to generate and update digital maps for inaccessible areas and wherever weather conditions are unstable such as North Korea or Polar region.

Weather is an important factor affecting roadway transportation in many aspects such as traffic flow, driver 's driving patterns, and crashes. This study focuses on the relationship between weather and road surface condition and develops a model to estimate the road surface condition using machine learning. A road surface sensor was attached to the probe vehicle to collect road surface condition classified into three categories as 'dry', 'moist' and 'wet'. Road geometry information (curvature, gradient), traffic information (link speed), weather information (rainfall, humidity, temperature, wind speed) are utilized as variables to estimate the road surface condition. A variety of machine learning algorithms examined for predicting the road surface condition, and a two - stage classification model based on 'Random forest' which has the highest accuracy was constructed. 14 days of data were used to train the model and 2 days of data were used to test the accuracy of the model. As a result, a road surface state prediction model with 81.74% accuracy was constructed. The result of this study shows the possibility of estimating the road surface condition using the existing weather and traffic information without installing new equipment or sensors.
Rapid variations in the geometry (i.e., thickness) of the refractor and low velocities affect greatly the imaging of the reflectors of land seismic data. Conventional solutions to obtain the weathering models utilizes first break picking method, which requires time consuming steps and causes the human error in picking the first arrivals. A new interferometric approach (interferometric refraction statics, IRS) which utilizes the first arrival signal (S/N enhanced by refraction convolution stack) instead of first break picking, is tested in this study to the synthetic data from the velocity structure provided by surface geophysics (refraction, MASW) and borehole geophysics (tomography, SPS logging) for the Cheongju granitic bodies. The results of IRS approach are found to be better than the ones from conventional first break picking in terms of continuities and horizontal resolution of the reflectors. The unresolved long-wavelength statics in brute stack are much removed by IRS weathering correction and the overlying refractors (the base of shallow weathering zone) are incidentally delineated in the refraction convolution stack.
