  • Piezoactuator using a flexure hinge mechanism is often used in the precision stages. When the total size of the hinge mechanism become small compared with the deformation of the hinge mechanism, the geometrical nonlinearity makes a considerable error in the output displacement. In this research, the incremental method based on the matrix method is developed to model the effect of the geometrical nonlinearity. Developed modeling method is applied to derive the error of output displacement of the bridge-type hinge mechanism and its results are derived with respect to the design parameters. This method can be easily used to the design optimization of the hinge mechanism and analysis results show that the geometrical nonlinearity error should be considered to achieve a high accuracy to the piezoactuators.

  • Canting is the optical alignment of mirror facets of heliostat such that the heliostat could focus the energy as a unit concentrator. Canting could improve the optical performance of heliostat and thus improves the efficiency of heliostat and ultimately improves the efficiency of the solar thermal power plant. This study discusses the effect of mirror canting, especially off-axis canting, used to compensate the sun tracking error caused by the heliostat geometrical errors. We first show that the canting could compensate the sun tracking error caused by the heliostat geometrical errors. Then we show that the proper canting time could exist, depending on the heliostat location. Finally we show how much the sun tracking performance could be improved by canting, by providing RMS sun tracking error. The limitation and caution of using canting to improve the sun tracking performance are also discussed.

  • It has been known that general velocity and force of a rigid body in space can be described in forms of a twist and a wrench by use of screws. However, the geometrical meaning of acceleration has not been clearly disclosed. It has been a normal practice to analyze or synthesize the acceleration effect of manipulator using some complex mathematical equations, which do not represent any geometrical meanings. In other words, such a technique doesn't clearly provide information about the overall acceleration state of manipulator at that instant. In this study, the geometrical meaning of acceleration of a rigid body has been investigated and thereby a geometrical procedure which can be applied to inverse acceleration analysis of a general non-redundant manipulator is presented as an application.

  • Hybrid girders can be constructed in different geometrical forms and from different materials. Selection of beam's effective constellation represents a complex process considering the variations of geometrical parameters, changes of built in material characteristics and their mutual relations, which has important effect on the behavior of the girder. This paper presents the theoretical and experimental research on behavior of the timber-steel hybrid girders' different geometrical constellation with external prestressing and in different conditions of timber moisture. These researches are based on linear elastic analysis, and further refine by using the plasticity and damage models.

  • Heliostat, as a mirror system tracking the sun's movement, is the most important subsystem determining the efficiency of solar thermal power plant. Thus the accurate sun tracking performance under the various hazardous operating condition, is required. This study presents a methodology of development of the solar ray tracing technique and the application of it in the analysis of sun tracking error due to the heliostat geometrical errors. The geometrical errors considered here are the azimuth axis tilting error and the elevation axis tilting error. We first analyze the geometry of solar ray reflected from the heliostat. Then the point on the receiver, where the solar ray reflected from the heliostat is landed, is computed and compared with the original intended point, which represents the sun tracking error. The result obtained shows that the effect of geometrical error on the sun tracking performance is varying with time(season) and the heliostat location. It also shows that the heliostat located near the solar tower has larger sun tracking error than that of the heliostat located farther.

  • The main purpose of the paper is to analyze effect of geometrical parameters of the reentry capsules such as radius of the spherical cap, shoulder radius, back shell inclination angle and overall length on the flow field characteristics. The numerical simulation with viscous flow past ARD (Atmospheric Reentry Demonstrator), Soyuz (Russian) and OREX (Orbital Reentry EXperimental) reentry capsules for freestream Mach numbers range of 2.0-5.0 is carried out by solving time-dependent, axisymmetric, compressible laminar Navier-Stokes equations. These reentry capsules appear as bell, head light and saucer in shape. The flow field features around the reentry capsules such as bow shock wave, sonic line, expansion fan and recirculating flow region are well captured by the present numerical simulations. A low pressure is observed immediately downstream of the base region of the capsule which can be attributed to fill-up in the growing space between the shock wave and the reentry module. The back shell angle and the radius of the shoulder over the capsule are having a significant effect on the wall pressure distribution. The effects of geometrical parameters of the reentry capsules will useful input for the calculation of ballistic coefficient of the reentry module.

  • It has been well known that the ductile cracking of steel would be accelerated by triaxial stress state. Recently, the characteristics of critical crack initiation of steels are quantitatively estimated using the two-parameters, that is, equivalent plastic strain and stress triaxiality, criterion. This study is paid to the fundamental clarification of the effect of geometrical heterogeneity and strength mismatching, which can elevate plastic constraint due to heterogeneous plastic straining, and loading rate on ductile crack initiation behavior. Also, the ductile crack initiation testing were conducted under static and dynamic loading using round bar specimens with circumferential notch and strength mis-matching. The result showed that the nominal strain at ductile crack initiation of circumferential notch specimens small then the round bar specimens for effect of geometrical discontinuity. Also, the nominal strain at ductile crack initiation was decreased with decrease of notch root radius of curvature.

  • Mass flow amplifier, which is an aerodynamic device, makes air flow increased by ejecting small amount of compressed air with $Coand{\breve{a}}$ effect. In this study, the flow characteristics of a mass flow amplifier were studied with various flow conditions and geometrical configurations. In order to improve the performance of mass flow amplifier, various values of clearance, diffuser angle and the aspect ratio of induced flow inlet to outlet were considered as design parameter. Furthermore, four different pressure conditions of compressed air were also considered. Numerical study was performed using the commercial CFD code, ANSYS CFX 14.5 with shear stress transport(SST) turbulent model. The results of pressure and velocity distributions were graphically depicted with different geometrical configurations and operating conditions.

  • Cylindrical shell structures buckle at service loads which are much lower than their associated theoretical buckling loads. The main source of this discrepancy is the presence of various imperfections which are created on the cylinder body during different processes as manufacturing, handling, assembling and machining. Many cylindrical shell structures are still designed against buckling based on the experimental data introduced by NASA SP-8007 as conservative lower bound curves. This study employed the numerical based Linear Buckling mode shape Imperfection (LBMI) method and modified it using a stochastic method to assess the effect of geometrical imperfections in more details on the buckling of cylindrical shells with and without the cutout. The comparison of results with those obtained from the numerical Simcple Perturbation Load Imperfection (SPLI) method for cylinders with and without cutout revealed a good correlation. The effect of two parameters of size and number of cutouts on the buckling load was investigated using the linear buckling and Modified LBMI methods. Results confirmed that in cylinders with a small cutout inserting geometrical imperfection using either SPLI or modified LBMI methods significantly reduced the value of the predicted buckling load. However, in cylinders with larger cutouts, the effect of the cutout is dominant, thus considering geometrical imperfection had a minor effect on the buckling loads predicted by both SPLI and modified LBMI methods. Furthermore, the modified LBMI method was employed to evaluate the combination effect of cutout numbers and size on the buckling load. It is shown that in small cutouts, an increasing in the cutout size up to a certain value resulted in a remarkable reduction of the buckling load, and beyond that limit, the buckling loads were constant against D/R ratios. In addition, the cutout number shows a more significant effect on decreasing the buckling load at small D/R ratios than large D/R ratios.
