We predict the electromagnetic wave propagation in space environments using geometrical optics. The effective indices of the troposphere, stratosphere, and ionosphere are computed, and the reflection, refraction, and attenuation of electromagnetic waves in space environments are calculated based on the ray tracing technique and geometrical optics. The influence of the refractive index and loss of atmosphere and the incident angle of the antenna on electromagnetic wave propagation is discussed.

A hybrid method based on high-frequency asymptotic optics was developed in order to predict the RCS of flying vehicles for RCS reduction studies. In cavity return, the rays are assumed to bounce from the inlet cavity based on the laws of geometrical optics and to exit the cavity via the aperture. In other parts of a flying vehicle, the physical optics method is applied to compute the back-scattered field from the solid surface. The hybrid method was validated by considering simple models of sphere and sphere with cavity. In addition, RCS analysis of a flying vehicle was conducted using the new hybrid electromagnetic scattering method based on physical optics and geometrical optics theories.

To overcome the capture-range problem in phase-diversity phase retrieval (PDPR), a geometrical-optics initial-estimate method is proposed to avoid a local minimum and to improve the accuracy of laser-wavefront measurement. We calculate the low-order aberrations through the geometrical-optics model, which is based on the two spot images in the propagation path of the laser, and provide it as a starting guess for the PDPR algorithm. Simulations show that this improves the accuracy of wavefront recovery by 62.17% compared to other initial values, and the iteration time with our method is reduced by 28.96%. That is, this approach can solve the capture-range problem.

We propose a generic method to calculate the optical functionalities of a 3D display with a lenticular lens array. In the present work, based on the geometrical optics, it is designed considering the specifications of the display panel. For the effective simulation, we first calculate the optical functionalities of a single cylindrical lens and, by comparing with the results obtained from the conventional geometrical optics, confirm the validity of the present method. Afterwards, we obtain the full distribution of the light intensity at an optimum viewing distance by expanding the results of the single lens to the horizontal plane of the display panel. From these results, we finally confirm whether the 3D images are realized or not in the system.
A wide field-of-view (FOV) image contains more visual information than a conventional image. This study proposes a new type of hyperbolic mirror for wide FOV image acquisition. The proposed mirror consists of a hyperbolic cylindrical section and a bowl-shaped hyperbolic omnidirectional section. Using an imaging system with this mirror, it is possible to achieve a $213.8^{\circ}$ horizontal and a $126.94^{\circ}$ vertical maximum FOV. Parameters of each section of the mirror are designed to be continuous at the junction of the two parts, and the resultant image is seamless. The image-acquisition model is obtained using ray-tracing optics. To rectify the geometrical distortion of the original image due to the mirror, an image-restoration algorithm based on conformal projection is presented in this study. The performance of the proposed imaging system with the hyperbolic mirror and its image-restoration algorithm are verified by experiments.

A complete form of physical optics solution to the E-polarized diffraction by a composite of conducting and dielectric wedges is obtained by sum ov geometrical optics solution and edge-diffracted field. The diffraction coefficients of the edge-diffracted field are expressed in series of cotangent functions. The electric field patterns of the physical optics solution are plotted in figures.
We consider geometrical conditions of liquid crystals of bent-shape molecules that result in optically isotropic antiferroelectric structure that can be reversibly switched to birefringent states. An example of an ester based banana-shape substance is discussed that almost fulfills the ideal conditions and provides fast electro-optical switching with or without crossed polarizers.

Laser Lift-Off (LLO) is a process that removes a GaN or AIN thin layer from a sapphire wafer to manufacture vertical-type LEDs. It consists of a light source, an attenuator, a mask, a projection lens and a beam homogenizer. In this paper, we design an attenuator and a projection lens. We use the 'ZEMAX' optical design software for analysis of depth of focus and for a projection lens design which makes $7{\times}7mm^2$ beam size by projecting a beam on a wafer. Using the 'LightTools' lighting design software, we analyze the size and uniformity of the beam projected by the projection lens on the wafer. The performance analysis found that the size of the square-shaped beam is $6.97{\times}6.96mm^2$, with 91.8 % uniformity and ${\pm}30{\mu}m$ focus depth. In addition, this study performs dielectric coating using the 'Essential Macleod' to increase the transmittance of an attenuator. As a result, for 23 layers of thin films, the transmittance total has 10-96% at angle of incidence $45-60^{\circ}$ in S-polarization.

A complete form of physical optics solution to the diffraction of electromagnetic waves by a dielectric wedge with arbitrary dielectric constant and general wedge angle is obtained for an incident plane wave with any angle. Based on the formulation of dual integral equation in the spectral domain, the physical optics solution is constructed by sum of geometrical optics term including multiple reflection inside the wedge and the edge diffracted field, of which diffraction functions are represented in a quite simple form as series of cotangent functions weighted by the Fresnel reflection coefficients. Since diffraction patterns of physical optics are discontinous at dielectric interfaces, Part II and III of these three companion papers will be concerned with correction to the error of the physical optics approximation.
Compared visual acuity that is measured in a artificial myopia with the numerical calculation. Calculation included image's height as well as blur circle that is formed to retina. The blur circle calculated in geometrical optics model, and height of retinal image calculated by refractive power and visual acuity that is measured in a artificial myopia. Define this result as "blur ratio" about blur circle and height of retinal image, and investigated blur ratio relationship about visual acuity in a artificial myopia.
