A new yield criterion for metal powder compaction based on continuum mechanics has been proposed. It includes three parameters to characterize the geometrical hardening of powder compact and strain hardening of incompressible metal matrix. The elasto-plastic finite element method to describe compaction of metal powders has been formulated using the new yield criterion. The values of parameters in the yield criterion can be determined using cold isostatic pressing(CIP). The finite element method can simulate compaction behavior of various copper powders.

In the laser surface hardening process the geometrical parameters, especially the depth, of the hardened layer are utilized to assess the integrity of the hardening layer quality. Monitoring of this geometrical parameter ofr on-line process control as well as for on-line quality evaluation, however, is an extremely difficult problem because the hardening layer is formed beneath a material surface. Moreover, the uncertainties in monitoring the depth can be raised by the inevitable use of a surface coating to enhance the processing efficiency and the insufficient knowledge on the effects of coating materials and its thicknesses. The paper describes the extimation results using neural network to estimate the hardening layer depth from measured surface temperanture and process variables (laser beam power and feeding velocity) under various situations. To evaluate the effec- tiveness of the measured temperature in estimating the harding layer depth, estimation was performed with or without temperature informations. Also to investigate the effects of coating thickness variations in the real industry situations, in which the coating thickness cannot be controlled uniform with good precision, estimation was done over only uniformly coated specimen or various thickness-coated specimens. A series of hardening experiments were performed to find the relationships between the hardening layer depth, temperature and process variables. The estimation results show the temperature informations greatly improve the estimation accuracy over various thickness-coated specimens.

In laser surface hardening processes, the geometrical parameters such as the depth and the width of a hardened layer can be utilized to assess the hardened layer quality. However, accurate monitoring of the geometrical parameters for on-line process control as well as for on-line quality evaluation is very difficult because the hardened layer is formed beneath a material surface and is not visible. Therefore, temperature monitoring of a point of specimen surface has most frequently been used as a process monitoring method. But, a hardened layer depends on the temperature distribution and the thermal history of a specimen during laser surface hardening processing. So, this paper describes the estimation results of the geometric parameters using multi-point surface temperature monitoring. A series of hardening experiments were performed to find the relationships between the geometric parameters and the measured temperature. Estimation results using a neural network show the enhanced effectiveness of multi-point surface temperature monitoring compared to one-point monitoring.
Heat flow equation and FEM have been used to calculate the hardening section of material in laser transformation hardening. SCM440 used as the diesel engine piston of vessel has been hardened by a $CO_2$ laser with the wavelength of $10.6{\mu}m$. The specimens were inclined from 0 to 70 degree to investigate the characteristics of laser hardening. The geometrical factor of heat flow equation affects the size of hardening area. The case width decreased with increasing travel speed and the case width increased with increasing inclined angle. Maximum case depth was achieved about 1.0mm and maximum hardness of laser hardened area was of 2.8 times than that of base metal. Experimental data show good agreement with the theoretical calculations for given laser hardening conditions.
In this study, effect of various material hardening models based on Holloman's isotropic, Ziegler's linear kinematic, non-linear kinematic and mixture of the isotropic and nonlinear kinematic hardening laws on springback prediction of titanium alloy (Ti-3Al-2.5V) in a tube rotary draw bending (RDB) process was investigated with presenting the keynotes for a comprehensive step by step ABAQUS simulation. Influence of mandrel on quality of the final product including springback, wall-thinning and cross-section deformation of the tube was investigated, too. Material parameters of the hardening models were obtained based on information of a uniaxial test. In particular, in the case of combined iso-nonlinear kinematic hardening the material constants were calibrated by a simple approach based on half-cycle data instead of several stabilized cycles ones. Moreover, effect of some material and geometrical parameters on springback was carried out. The results showed that using the various hardening laws separately cannot describe the material hardening behavior correctly. Therefore, it is concluded that combining the hardening laws is a good idea to have accurate springback prediction. Totally the results are useful for predicting and controlling springback and cross-section deformation in metal forming processes.

This paper studies nonlinear free vibration characteristics of nonlocal magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) nanobeams resting on nonlinear elastic substrate having geometrical imperfection by considering piezoelectric reinforcement scheme. The piezoelectric reinforcement can cause an enhanced vibration behavior of smart nanobeams under magnetic field. All of previously reported studies on MEE nanobeams ignore the influences of geometric imperfections which are very substantial due to the reason that a nanobeam cannot be always perfect. Nonlinear governing equations of a smart nanobeam are derived based on classical beam theory and an analytical trend is provided to obtained nonlinear vibration frequency. This research shows that changing the volume fraction of piezoelectric constituent in the material has a great influence on vibration behavior of smart nanobeam under electric and magnetic fields. Also, it can be seen that nonlinear vibration behaviors of smart nanobeam are dependent on the magnitude of exerted electric voltage, magnetic potential, hardening elastic foundation and geometrical imperfection.
Taking into account the geometrical and material nonlinearities, an ultimate behavior of reinforced concrete cooling tower shell in hyperbolic configuration is presented. The design wind pressures suggested in the guidelines of the US (ACI) and Germany (VGB), with or without the effect of internal suction, are employed in the analysis to examine the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of each design wind pressure. The geometrical nonlinearity is incorporated by the Green-Lagrange strain tensor. The nonlinear features of concrete, such as the nonlinear stress-strain relation in compression, the tensile cracking with the smeared crack model, an effect of tension stiffening, are taken into account. The biaxial stress state in concrete is represented by an improved work-hardening plasticity model. From the perspective of quality of wind pressures, the two guidelines are determined as highly correlated each other. Through the extensive analysis on the Niederaussem cooling tower in Germany, not only the ultimate load is determined but also the mechanism of failure, distribution of cracks, damage processes, stress redistributions, and mean crack width are examined.
This paper is concerned with the analysis on the surface expansion of AA 2024 and AA 1100 aluminum alloys in backward extrusion process. Due to heavy surface expansion appeared usually in the backward can extrusion process, the tribological conditions along the interface between the material and the punch land are very severe. In the present study, the surface expansion is analyzed especially under various process conditions. The main goal of this study is to investigate the influence of degree of reduction in height, geometries of punch nose, friction and hardening characteristics of different aluminum alloys on the material flow and thus on the surface expansion on the working material. Two different materials are selected for investigation as model materials and they are AA 2024 and AA 1100 aluminum alloys. The geometrical parameters employed in analysis include punch corner radius and punch nose angle. The geometry of punch follows basically the recommendation of ICFG and some variations of punch geometry are adopted to obtain quantitative information on the effect of geometrical parameters on material flow. Extensive simulation has been conducted by applying the rigid-plastic finite element method to the backward can extrusion process under different geometrical, material, and interface conditions. The simulation results are summarized in terms of surface expansion at different reduction in height, deformation patterns including pressure distributions along the interface between workpiece and punch, comparison of surface expansion between two model materials, geometrical and interfacial parametric effects on surface expansion, and load-stroke relationships.
The nonlinear vibration analysis of a magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) sandwich plate is conducted experimentally. Experiments have been performed in order to construct the frequency-response curves in the vicinity of the fundamental natural frequency of an MRE sandwich plate (plate A) in either the absence or presence of a localised external magnetic field at 3 different geometrical locations, for both small and medium magnetic fields. Furthermore, experiments have also been conducted on a pure aluminium plate (plate B) with an equal thickness to the MRE sandwich plate (plate A) in order to examine the influence of the MRE layer on the nonlinear dynamics of the system. An electrodynamic shaker was used to directly force each system and the displacement at the centre of the plate was measured. Meanwhile, permanent magnets were used to apply a localised magnetic field for the experiments where the MRE sandwich plate was subject to an external magnetic field. It was observed all the MRE systems displayed strong hardening-type nonlinear behaviour, however, with increasing magnetic field this behaviour transitioned to a weak hardening-type nonlinearity.
In this paper, the forced resonance vibration of porous functionally graded (FG) curved nanobeam is examined. In order to capture the hardening and softening mechanisms of nanostructure, the nonlocal strain gradient theory is employed to build the size-dependent model. Using the Timoshenko beam theory together with the Hamilton principle, the equations of motion for the curved nanobeam are derived. Then, Navier series are used in order to obtain the dynamical deflections of the porous FG curved nanobeam with simply-supported ends. It is found that the resonance position of the nanobeam is very sensitive to the nonlocal and strain gradient parameters, material variation, porosity coefficient, as well as geometrical conditions. The results indicate that the resonance position is postponed by increasing the strain gradient parameter, while the nonlocal parameter has the opposite effect on the results. Furthermore, increasing the opening angle or length-to-thickness ratio will result in resonance position moves to lower-load frequency.
