  • The increases of industrial and technological development and human activities have disturbed the balance of natural nitrogen (N) circulation. These phenomena have induced that large amounts of N are to be present in excess in air, soil and water environment. We investigated the effects of excess of reactive nitrogen ($N_r$) compounds on soil and water environment ecosystems through literature and case studies, and suggested the strategy of mitigating the acidification in soil and water ecosystems. $N_r$ moves to air, soil and water media, can be converted to different types, and interacts with other chemical compounds. As an efficient N management plan, the evaluation (application of monitoring and safety index) and the chemical restoration (research and development) of the acidification in soil and water environment ecosystems are required to minimize the effects of $N_r$ as well as policies to regulate the various emission sources and amounts of $N_r$.

  • In order to apply Kriging methods for geostatistics of spatial data, an estimation of spatial coherency functions is required priorly based on the spatial distance between measurement points. In the study, the typical coherency functions, such as semi-variogram, homeogram, and covariance function, were estimated using the national geoid model. The test area consisting of 2°×2° and the Unified Control Points (UCPs) within the area were chosen as sampling measurements of the geoid. Based on the distance between the control points, a total of 100 sampling points were grouped into distinct pairs and assigned into a bin. Empirical values, which were calculated with each of the spatial coherency functions, resulted out as a wave model of a semi-variogram for the best quality of fit. Both of homeogram and covariance functions were better fitted into the exponential model. In the future, the methods of various Kriging and the functions of estimated spatial coherency need to be studied to verify the prediction accuracy and to calculate the Mean Squared Prediction Error (MSPE).

  • In this study, instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to measure the concentrations of about 30 trace elements in airborne particulate (PM2.5) samples at urban area of Daejeon city located in the southwestern region of Korea. An inspection of the measurement data indicates that the distribution patterns of trace elements could clearly distinguish the elements with their concentrations ranging over five orders of magnitude. The mean values for Lu and Dy were found to be the lowest at values of 0.01 and $0.04ng/m^3$, while those for K and Fe showed the highest value of 671 and $653ng/m^3$, respectively. The results of correlation analysis showed that PM2.5 concentrations can exhibit much more enhanced correlations with the elements of earth crustal components. The results of factor analysis further indicated that there are no more than six factors with statistical significance, which may exert dominant roles in regulating the elemental concentration levels in the study area. Enrichment factor analysis supports explicit interpretation of results found by this factor analysis.

  • Electrical resistivity and seismic refraction surveys were conducted to investigate geologic structures and geotechnical characteristics of the subsurface in Dok-do island, along with rock physical properties. The resistivity results in Seo-do island show that the fault adjacent to the fisherman's shelter is a normal fault and extended towards the NW direction. Bedded Rapilli Tuff in the downstream was more severely influenced in depth by weathering and erosion than Trachy Andesite II in the upstream area. The physical properties of the rocks illustrate that Trachyte and Trachy Andesite are hardest, Massive Tuff Breccia is next, and Tuffs are the most soft rocks in Dok-do island.

  • The InSAR (Interferometric SAR) processing steps for DEM generation consist of the coregistration of two SAR data, interferogram generation, phase filtering, phase unwrapping, phase to height conversion, and geocoding, etc. In this study, we developed the precise algorithm for phase to height conversion, including the ambiguity method taking into account Earth ellipsoid, Schw$\ddot{a}$visch method, and the refined ambiguity method suitable for the interferometric pair with non-parallel obit. From the testing with JERS-1 orbit we found that the height error by traditional ambiguity method reaches to about 40 m during phase to height conversion. The proposed methods are very useful in generating precise InSAR DEM;especially in the case of using non-parallel InSAR pair due to unstable orbit control such as JERS-1 or intentional orbit control such as Cross-InSAR pair between ERS2 and ENVISAT satellite.

  • We have a question about the changing possibility of orientation of discontinuities through the depth of under-ground. To know this, the data from Honam coalfield composed of shale, sandstone and coal and Suwon area which crops out mica schist, were analyzed the discontinuities measured by BIPS and Televiewer. In Honam coalfield the orientations of joints are changed at 30-40 m depth of underground and in Suwon area they are changed around 20 m depth. To compared the results from Honanam coalfield and Suwon area, there are different rock type and geologic structure. However, the attitude of the discontinuities are changing at 20-30 m depth of underground.

  • Real-time Aerial Monitoring System performs the rapid mapping in an emergency situation so that the geoinformation could be constructed in near real time. In this system, the position and attitude information from GPS/INS integration algorithm is used to perform the aerial triangulation(AT) without GCPs. Therefore, if we obtain Exterior Orientation(EO) estimates from AT sequentially, EO are used as the measurements in the Kalman filter. In this study, we simulate the GPS/IMS/Image data for an UAV-based aerial monitoring system and compare the GPS/INS/AT with and without from AT. Comparative analysis showed that result from the GPS/INS/AT with EO update is more accurate than without the update. However, when the vehicle turns, the position error significantly increases which need more analysis in the future.

  • We carried out studies on InSAR techniques for time-series deformation monitoring using multi-temporal SAR. The PSInSAR method using permanent scatterer is much more complicate than the SBAS because it includes many non-linear equation due to the input of wrapped phase. It is conformed the PS algorithm is very sensitive to even PSC selection. On the other hand, the SBAS method using interferogram of small baseline subset is simple but sensitive to the accuracy of unwrapped phase. The SBAS is better method for expecting not significant unwrapping error while PSInSAR is more proper method for expecting local deformation within very limited area. We used 51 ERS-1/2 SAR data during 1992-2000 over Las Vegas, USA for the comparison between PSInSAR and SBAS. Both PSInSAR and SBAS show similar ground deformation value although local deformation seems to be detected in the PSInSAR method only.

  • On board satellite magnetometer measures all possible magnetic components, such as the core and crustal components from the inner Earth, and magnetospheric, ionospheric and' its coupled components from the outer Earth. Due to its dipole and non-dipole features, separation of the respective component from the measurements is most difficult unless the comprehensive knowledge of each field characteristics and the consequent modeling methods are solidly constructed. Especially, regional long wavelength magnetic signals of the crust are strongly masked by the main field and dynamic external field and hence difficult to isolate in the satellite measurements. In particular, the un-modeled effects of the strong auroral external fields and the complicated behavior of the core field near the geomagnetic poles conspire to greatly reduce the crustal magnetic signal-to-noise ratio in the polar region relative to the rest of the Earth. We can, however, use spectral correlation theory to filter the static lithospheric and core field components from the dynamic external field effects that are closely related to the geomagnetic storms affecting ionospheric current disturbances. To help isolate regional lithospheric anomalies from core field components, the correlations between CHAMP magnetic anomalies and the pseudo-magnetic effects inferred from satellite gravity-derived crustal thickness variations can also be exploited, Isolation of long wavelengths resulted from the respective source is the key to understand and improve the models of the external magnetic components as well as of the lower crustal structures. We expect to model the external field variations that might also be affected by a sudden upheaval like tsunami by using our algorithm after isolating any internal field components.

  • Detrital zircons in iron-bearing quartzite of the Seosan Croup from southeastern part of the Cyeonggi Hassif were analysed for SHRIHP U-Pb ages. Among 42 analyses, 38 data yield concordant ages (less tan 10 % discordancy), and they concentrated at 1781~1898 Ma (n=19), $1781{\sim}1898\;Ma(n=19),\;1935{\sim}1941\;Ma(n=4),\;1996\;Ma,\;2120\;Ma\;2403{\sim}2459\;Ma(n=5)$, 2661 Ma and 3198 Ma. The data indicate that sedimentation of iron-bearing quartzite should be after ca 1.78 Ga (the youngest detrital zircon age), and argue against some of conventional idea that iron-bearing quartzite of the Seosan Group might be correlated with the Archean iron-bearing quartzite in the North China Craton.
