  • The stony corals known from Korean waters are 24 species , 15 genera, 7 families in 5 suborders, of which 7 species are newly recorded to the Korean scleractinian fauna ; Montipora trabeculata, Oulangia stokesiana miltoni, Goniocorella dumosa, Dendrophyllia arbuscula, D.boschmai cyathohelioides, D. micranthus, and Rhizopsammia minuta mutsuensis. They were collected from 35 localities of southern Korea from 1969 to 1986. For the geographical analysis, the coastal waters of Koarea are divided into four regions ; the Yellow Sea, the Korea Strait, the Cheju Island area and the East Sea (Sea of Japan) . These are based on the species diversity , the geographical distribution form, and the community coefficient, Korean scleractinians consists of 8 temperate zone forms(33.3%, Te) and 16 tropical forms(66.7%, Tr) . Concerning the distribution in each region, 3 spp. (2 Te, 1 Tr) occur in the Yellow Sea, 9 Spp. (5 Te, 4 Tr) in the Korea Strait, 16 spp.(4 Te, 12 Tr) in the Cheju Island area and 5 spp. (2 Te, 3 Tr) in the East Sea. The communicty coefficient between the Korea strait and the East Sea is the highest (0.596), and that between the Yellow Sea and the Cheju Island area is the lowest(0).

  • In the early stage of industrial development, most of software companies were agglomerated at the CBD(Central Business Districts) in Seoul. However, the spatial distribution pattern of Korean Software industry has been changed according to the propagation of broadband, the change in rents, the governmental policy for industrial districts. In this research, using the software year book at 1997 and 2007, the emerging new pattern was analyzed using spatial clustering analysis. As a results of research, the spatial distribution was expanded in morphological changes. However, it was found that there was not a significant difference in a degree of accumulation. In the aspect of behavioral movement of companies, they tend to be relocated from the CBD to urban fringes and their movement is related to the product life cycle in selecting the clustered place.

  • This study analyzes the time-space variability for the weekly passenger flow of the Seoul Subway system based on the dynamic visualization methods. For the purpose, we utilize one-week T-card transaction databases. By applying data mining algorithms, we extract passenger data for edge flows, on/off passengers at each subway station per minute interval time. It is practically intractable to analyze such spatio-temporal passenger flows by general statistical techniques. We employ dynamic visualization methods to analyze intuitively and to grasp effectively characteristics of the diurnal passenger flows on the Seoul Metropolitan Subway system during one week. As the result, we found that substantial differences exist on the spatio-temporal distribution patterns among days as well as between weekdays and weekend. We also investigates the time-space variability among eight major centers, and we found wide differences in their spatio-temporal distribution patterns.

  • This study is an attempt to grasp the spatial patterns and characteristics in the freight flows based on freight quantity data in 1997. The spatial background for the study is the Capital Region, which plays an important role in regional economics and industrial development. The methodology in the research used factor analysis to produce a functional region. The study selected three categories of freight that account for more than 60 percent of freight flows, chemical industrial goods, light industrial goods, and metal machinery industrial goods. The target analysis unit is divided into 36 zones. The common characteristic of the three categories is that they are concentrated at one specific region than are dispersed regionally. And in particular, the remarkable feature is that the central region of the study is Seoul. Usually the eminent regions of nows were made where environment of distribution facilities is good but these were made in a less than good environment. I think a reason is that facilities were uneven distribution.

  • This paper is a research that investigated the distribution and status of coastal sand dunes spread along the shoreline of Ongjin-gun, Jung-gu in Incheon and evaluated their conservation status. In Incheon, the length of coastline along the West Sea shoreline is 1,053km. thus leading to an assumption that coastal sand dunes are dispersed their as many as other regional local government. However, there are no enough basic data on the distribution, characteristics, and the management status of other areas besides the 5 places on the list by the Ministry of Environment. Considering this fact, this paper additionally drew 21 coastal sand dunes in the shoreline of Incheon, including the 5 places on the list by the Ministry of Environment, through the standard of coastal sandhill selection. The additionally selected aimed to propose how to develop basic materials on the conservation status of coastal sandhills in Incheon through characteristic analysis by sandhill and qualitative evaluation.

  • In this study, a soil moisture estimation model was proposed using the ground observation data of soil moisture, precipitation, surface temperature, MODIS NDVI and artificial neural networks. The model was calibrated and verified on the Yongdam dam watershed which has reliable ground soil moisture networks. The test statistics of calibration sites, Jucheon, Bugui, Sangjeon, showed that the correlation coefficients between observations and estimations are about 0.9353 and RMSE is about 1.4957%. Also that of the verification site, Cheoncheon2, showed that the correlation coefficient is about 0.8215 and RMSE is about 4.2077%. The soil moisture estimation model was applied to estimate the spatial distribution of soil moisture in the Yongdam dam watershed and results showed improved spatial soil moisture distribution since the model used satellite information of NDVI and artificial neural networks which can represent the nonlinear relationships between data well. The model should be useful to estimate wide range soil moisture information.

  • The aim of this study is to investigate distribution characteristics of incised meander cutoff in Gyeonggi and Gangwon Provinces of Central Korea. The density of meander cutoff is highest in the mountain rivers including Naerin and Dongdae flowing on Jeongseon-gun and Inje-gun of Gangwon Province. Most of meander cutoff process has been occurred repeatedly during the Quaternary period, especially concentrated in the period of climatic change between glacial and interglacial stages. In the aspect of the lithology, the density of cutoff is highest in sedimentary rock, but lowest in igneous rock. As for geological structure, its frequency is high at $11{\sim}20km$ westerly away from the Taebaek Mountains, at subsequent channel, lower part of resequent channel, and channels crossing the fault line. The relation between distance from the Taebaek Mountains and altitude is very obvious at the western side of the Taebaek Mountains. The values of altitude, height from riverbed, and stream order are highest at sedimentary rock and lowest at volcanic rock.

  • The purpose of the study is to examine the characteristic of recreation forest that has been rapidly developed and increased since late 1980's. Also, the process and spatial distribution of recreation forest is analyzed. For the analyses of the characteristic of recreation forest, the concept of recreation forest that has been researched and published is explored and examined. To explain the process and spatial distribution, recreation forest used by people at present is studied in terms of time and space. It is concluded that the characteristic of recreation forest serve as nature oriented forest as well as functions as recreational space and educational place on nature. The recreation forest also produces wood far economic purpose and gives owners economic benefit. Also the study leads us to the conclusion that the process of recreation forest is related to changes in leisure activity caused by shorter working hours and tourist behavior. Finally, from this study, we can conclude that natural and social conditions have an effect on spatial distribution as an important variable.

  • This study attempts to analyze the spatial clustering of survived and closed coffee shops based on the land price and land use for each coffee shop location. The locational characteristics of survived and closed coffee shops for each cluster type are identified through various locational properties such as transport factors (physical accessibility), shop properties (franchise information, newly open/closed business experience), and spatial density (kernel density estimation). To this end, we categorize the clusters of survived and closed coffee shops into three types (general locational distribution type, commercialization type of residential area and location type of commercial center), and then analyze their locational characteristics. As the result, we found that the locations of newly open and closed coffee shops show different distribution characteristics, even though they are classified into the same type due to the double sidedness of new open and closed locations. The results of this study can be provided as basic data for planning the location of coffee shop as well as regional commercial district.
