An Effective Route Selection Scheme with Considering Traffic Density in VANET

  • A geographical routing protocol is typically utilized for a route selection of VANET. Even if it is conceptually well adapted into VANET, message delivery tends to be unreliable with frequent network partitions, which mainly come from the inherent characteristics such as high mobility and irregular traffic density. In this paper, we deal with a method to enable reliable message delivery with reflecting the traffic density on routing decision. By concatenating the message delivery cost of each of inbetween junction section, $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ shortest paths are initially determined. When it is not possible to deliver the message on a junction on the 1st path, we utilize two novel ideas, that is, letting the message stay on the junction to find out a new relay node, and putting a replicated copy to reach via a detour path. By using the NS-2 network simulator, our method has been examined in terms of message delivery rate and delay. It shows that our method is much efficient than the other method in the low density environment, while it brings similar results in the high density environment.

  • Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) is the new wireless networking concept of mobile ad hoc networks in research community. Routing in vehicular is a major challenge and research area. The majority of current routing algorithms for VANETs utilize indirect metrics to select the next hop and produce optimal node path. In this paper, we propose a distance and angle based routing algorithm for VANETs, which combines a distance approach with an angle based geographical strategy for selecting the next hop, with the purpose of using direct metrics to build a optimal node route. The proposed algorithm has better performance than the previous scheme.

  • In practice, it is well known that geographical and/or location based routing is highly effective for wireless sensor network. Here, electing some landmarks on the network and forwarding data based on the landmark is one of the good approaches for a vast sensing field with holes. In the most previous works, landmarks are elected without considering the residual energy on each sensor. In this paper, we propose an Energy aware Landmark Election and Routing (ELER) protocol to establish a stable routing paths and reduce the total power consumption. The proposed protocol makes use of each sensor's energy level on electing the landmarks, which would be utilized to route a packet towards the target region using greedy forwarding method. Our simulation results illustrate that the proposed scheme can significantly reduce the power dissipation and effectively lengthen the lifetime of the network.

EZR: Expansive Search Zone Routing Protocol for Ship Ad Hoc Networks (선박 애드 혹 네트워크를 위한 확장탐색구역 경로배정 프로토콜)

  • Ships at sea cannot exchange data among them easily so far. Basically voice-oriented communication systems are the main methods, some of them utilize the HF radio systems at lower bit rates, and for higher bit rates, the Inmarsat or VSAT are adopted. None of them are used widely because of lower qualities and higher costs. There exist many technical and economical limits to have the Internet service just like on land such as the WWW service. In order to achieve the improved transmission rates of the maritime communication networks at farther sea, MANET(Mobile Ad Hoc Network) is one of the most practical models. In this paper, a new routing protocol named EZR (Expansive Search Zone Routing Protocol) is proposed, which is based on SANET (Ship Ad Hoc Network) model that has some different features from MANET and VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc Network). The search zone for the shortest path is firstly found by EZR. If no path is searched in the zone, the zone is expanded according to the rule of EZR. The zone-expanding and path-searching procedures are repeated until the path is found out. The performance of EZR is evaluated and compared with LAR protocol which is one of the most typical routing protocols based on geographical information. The simulated results show that EZR is much better than LAR at sea environments in terms of routing success rate, route optimality, and a single index of performance combined the previous two metrics.

A Routing Scheme for Multi-Classes in Multi-hop LEO Satellite Networks with Inter-Satellite Links (위성간 링크를 가지는 다중 홉 저궤도 위성망에서 멀티 클래스 지원을 위한 경로 배정 기법)

  • This paper proposes a routing scheme for multi-hop LEO satellite networks with inter-satellite links aiming for reducing the number of link handovers while keeping the efficient use of network resource. The proposed routing scheme controls the link handovers by taking account of the deterministic LEO satellite system dynamics, geographical location of a ground terminal and statistic information of call duration. The performance of the proposed routing scheme has been evaluated and compared with previous routing schemes in terms of average number of link handovers during a call, the call blocking and dropping probability, and the network utilization.

  • Compared to terrestrial RF communications, underwater acoustic communications have several limitations such as limited bandwidth, high level of fading effects, and a large underwater propagation delay. In this paper, in order to tackle those limitations of underwater communications and to make it possible to form a large underwater monitoring systems, we propose a hierarchical underwater network architecture, which consists of underwater sensors, clusterheads, underwater/surface sink nodes, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). In the proposed architecture, for the maximization of packet delivery ratio and the minimization of underwater sensor's energy consumption, a hybrid routing protocol is used. More specifically, cluster members use Tree based routing to transmit sensing data to clusterheads. AUVs on optimal trajectory movements collect the aggregated data from clusterhead and finally forward the data to the sink node. Also, in order to minimize the maximum travel distance of AUVs, an Integer Linear Programming based algorithm is employed. Performance analysis through simulations shows that the proposed architecture can achieve a higher data delivery ratio and lower energy consumption than existing routing schemes such as gradient based routing and geographical forwarding.   • In this paper we have proposed a power aware location based routing protocol for wireless ad hoc network. The existing greedy perimeter stateless routing (GPSR) has some problems which are certain node overloaded and void situation. The proposed power aware greedy perimeter stateless routing (PAGPSR) protocol gives a solution for these problems in GPSR. PAGPSR uses power aware and geographically informed neighbor selection to route a packet towards the destination. It also gives a solution for the fundamental problem in geographical routing called communication void. It considers residual energy of battery and distance to the destination for the next hope node selection. When it encounters a void it starts limited-flooding to select next hop node. To evaluate the performance of our protocol we simulated PAGPSR in ns-2. Our simulation results show that our protocol achieves longer network lifetime compared with greedy perimeter stateless routing (GPSR).

GIS Oriented Platform For Solving Real World Logistic Vehicle Routing Problem

  • Logistics optimization problems related with vehicle routing such as warehouse locating, track scheduling, customer order delivery, wastage pickup etc. are very interesting and important issues to date. Many Vehicle Routing and Scheduling Systems (VRSS) have been developed/proposed to optimize the logistics problems. But majority of them are dedicated to a particular problem and are unable to handle the real world spatial data directly. The system developed for one problem may not be suitable for others due to inter-problem constraint variations. The constraints may include geographical, environmental and road traffic nature of the working region along with other constraints related with the problem. So the developer always needs to modify the original routing algorithm in order to fulfill the purpose. In our study, we propose a general-purpose platform by combining GIS road map and Database Management System (DBMS), so that VRSS can interact with real world spatial data directly to solve different kinds of vehicle routing problems. Using the features of our developed system, the developer can frequently modify the existing algorithm or create a new one to serve the purpose.

  • A VANET (Vehicular Ad Hoc Network), a subclass of MANET (Mobile Ad Hoc Network), is an ad hoc network using wireless communication between vehicles without fixed infrastructure such as base station. VANET suffers a frequent link breakage and network topology change because of the rapid movement of vehicles and the density change of vehicles. From these characteristics of VANET, geographical routing protocols such as GPSR (Greedy Perimeter Stateless Routing) using only the information of neighbor nodes are more suitable rather than AODV and DSR that are used in existing MANETs. However, GPSR may have a transmission delay and packet loss by frequent link disconnection and continual local maxima under the low vehicle density conditions. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a DTVR (Delay Tolerant Vehicular Routing) algorithm that perform a DTN-based routing scheme if there is no 2-hop neighbor nodes for efficient routing under the low vehicle densities in VANETs. Simulation results using ns-2 reveal that the proposed DTVR protocol performs much better performance than the existing routing protocols.

Energy Efficient Routing Protocol in Wireless Sensor Networks with Hole (홀이 있는 WSN 환경에서 에너지 효율적인 라우팅 프로토콜 )

  • Energy-efficient routing protocol is an important task in a wireless sensor network that is used for monitoring and control by wirelessly collecting information obtained from sensor nodes deployed in various environments. Various routing techniques have been studied for this, but it is also necessary to consider WSN environments with specific situations and conditions. In particular, due to topographical characteristics or specific obstacles, a hole where sensor nodes are not deployed may exist in most WSN environments, which may result in inefficient routing or routing failures. In this case, the geographical routing-based hall bypass routing method using GPS functions will form the most efficient path, but sensors with GPS functions have the disadvantage of being expensive and consuming energy. Therefore, we would like to find the boundary node of the hole in a WSN environment with holes through minimal sensor function and propose hole bypass routing through boundary line formation.
