In ad-hoc networks, dynamically reconfigurable and temporary wireless networks, all mobile devices cooperatively maintain network connectivity with no assistance of base stations while they have limited amounts of energy that is used in different rates depending on the power level. Since every node has to perform the functions of a router, if some nodes die early due to lack of energy, it will not be possible for other nodes to communicate with each other and network lifetime will be shortened. Consequently, it is very important to develop a technique to efficiently consume the limited amounts of energy resources so that the network lifetime is maximized. In this paper, geographical localized routing is proposed to help making smarter routing decision using only local information and reduce the routing overhead. The proposed localized routing algorithm selects energy-aware neighbors considering the transmission energy and error rate over the wireless link, and the residual energy of the node, which enables nodes to achieve balanced energy-consumption and the network lifetime to prolong.

A wireless sensor network (WSN), with its constrained sensor node energy supply, needs an energy-efficient routing technique that maximises overall system performance. When rumours are routed using a random-walk routing algorithm, which is not highly scalable, spiral pathways may appear. Because humans think a straight line is the quickest route between two sites and two straight lines in a plane are likely to intersect, straight-line routing (SLR) constructs a straight path without the aid of geographic information. This protocol was developed for WSNs. As a result, sensor nodes in WSNs use less energy when using SLR. Using comprehensive simulation data, we show that our upgraded SLR systems outperform rumour routing in terms of performance and energy conservation.

Sensor networks are composed of a great number of sensor nodes with constrained battery. Disjoint multipath scheme based flooding method has a merit that efficiently construct multipath in irregular networks, but causes lots of energy consumption in networks. Flooding method is not a suitable technology in wireless sensor networks with constrained battery. We introduce energy-efficient geographic routing scheme considered as an efficient, simple, and scalable routing protocol for wireless sensor networks. The geographic routing scheme on multipath generates a problem with a congestion. So we introduce the concept of multipath pipeline as a congestion avoidance strategy. But multipath pipelines have a big problem on the boundary of holes under irregular networks. We propose a novel disjoint multipath scheme as combined method with geographic routing scheme and hole detouring algorithm on multipath. A novel disjoint multipath scheme constructs disjoint multipath pipelines efficiently for reliability without a collision in irregular wireless sensor networks. Simulation results are provided to validate the claims.

Multihop data delivery in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) suffers from the fact that vehicles are highly mobile and inter-vehicle links are frequently disconnected. In such networks, for efficient multihop routing of road safety information (e.g. road accident and emergency message) to the area of interest, reliable communication and fast delivery with minimum delay are mandatory. In this paper, we propose a multihop vehicle-to-infrastructure routing protocol named Vertex-Based Predictive Greedy Routing (VPGR), which predicts a sequence of valid vertices (or junctions) from a source vehicle to fixed infrastructure (or a roadside unit) in the area of interest and, then, forwards data to the fixed infrastructure through the sequence of vertices in urban environments. The well known predictive directional greedy routing mechanism is used for data forwarding phase in VPGR. The proposed VPGR leverages the geographic position, velocity, direction and acceleration of vehicles for both the calculation of a sequence of valid vertices and the predictive directional greedy routing. Simulation results show significant performance improvement compared to conventional routing protocols in terms of packet delivery ratio, end-to-end delay and routing overhead.

There are various research challenges in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) that need to be focused until an extensive deployment of it becomes conceivable. Design and development of a scalable routing algorithm for VANETs is one of the critical issue due to frequent path disruptions caused by the vehicle's mobility. This study aims to provide a novel road-aware routing protocol for vehicular networks named as Two-level hierarchical Hybrid Road-Aware (THERA) routing for vehicular ad hoc networks. The proposed protocol is designed explicitly for inter-vehicle communication. In THERA, roads are distributed into non-overlapping road segments to reduce the routing overhead. Unlike other protocols, discovery process does not flood the network with packet broadcasts. Instead, THERA uses the concept of Gateway Vehicles (GV) for the discovery process. In addition, a route between source and destination is flexible to changing topology, as THERA only requires road segment ID and destination ID for the communication. Furthermore, Road-Aware routing reduces the traffic congestion, bypasses the single point of failure, and facilitates the network management. Finally yet importantly, this paper also proposes a probabilistical model to estimate a path duration for each road segment using the highway mobility model. The flexibility of the proposed protocol is evaluated by performing extensive simulations in NS3. We have used SUMO simulator to generate real time vehicular traffic on the roads of Gangnam, South Korea. Comparative analysis of the results confirm that routing overhead for maintaining the network topology is smaller than few previously proposed routing algorithms.

V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) is a special kind of VANET (Vehicular Ad-hoc Network), which has high mobility and frequent topology changes and causes the link breakage problem. To resolve this problem, geographic routing protocols such as greedy forwarding are proposed. However, the greedy forwarding approach selects the node closest to the destination node as the transfer node within the transmission range so that it may cause many problems owing to many intersections and many changes in vehicular traffic in urban areas. The paper proposes a greedy perimeter urban routing (GPUR) algorithm considering the presence of 2-hop neighbor nodes and the road characteristics. Simulation results using ns-2 reveal that the proposed GPUR algorithm significantly reduces the routing error problem and the probability of local maximum than the existing routing protocols.

With the prevalence of multimedia applications and the potential commercial usage of Mobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) in group communications, Quality of Service (QoS) support became a key requirement. Recently, some researchers studied QoS multicast issues in MANETs. Most of the existing QoS multicast routing protocols are designed with flat topology and small networks in mind. In this paper, we investigate the scalability problem of these routing protocols. In particular, a Position-Based QoS Multicast Routing Protocol (PBQMRP) has been developed. PBQMRP builds a source multicast tree guided by the geographic information of the mobile nodes, which helps in achieving more efficient multicast delivery. This protocol depends on the location information of the multicast members which is obtained using a location service algorithm. A virtual backbone structure has been proposed to perform this location service with minimum overhead and this structure is utilized to provide efficient packet transmissions in a dynamic mobile Ad hoc network environment. The performance of PBQMRP is evaluated by performing both quantitative analysis and extensive simulations. The results show that the used virtual clustering is very useful in improving scalability and outperforms other clustering schemes. Compared to On-Demand Multicast Routing Protocol (ODMRP), PBQMRP achieves competing packet delivery ratio and significantly lower control overhead.

This paper proposes the UIGRP, which can tackle the problem of the network disconnection and packet transmission delay caused by turning vehicles frequently in an urban intersection. The UIGRP was designed as follows. First, it calculates the direction of vehicles using the moving direction of vehicles and the location of a destination. Second, it makes the RSU measure the density of an urban intersection. Third, the TGF Algorithm in the UIGRP decides the data transmission paths by setting as an intermediate node, not only the vehicle that is moving in the direction where a destination node is located, but also the node that has the highest density. The TGF algorithm using a moving direction and density minimizes or removes the occurrence of local maximum problems that the existing Greedy Forwarding algorithm has. Therefore, the simulation result shows that UIGRP decreases the occurrence of local maximum problems by 3 and 1 times, and the packet transmission time by 6.12 and 2.04(ms), and increases the success rate of packet transmission by 15 and 3%, compared to the existing GPSR and GPUR.

Greedy routing which is easy to apply to geographic wireless sensor networks is frequently used. Greedy routing works well in dense networks whereas in sparse networks it may fail. When greedy routing fails, it needs a recovery algorithm to get out of the communication void. However, additional recovery algorithm causes problems that increase both the amount of packet transmission and energy consumption. Communication void is a condition where all neighbor nodes are further away from the destination than the node currently holding a packet and it therefore cannot forward a packet using greedy forwarding. Therefore we propose a VODUA(Virtually Ordered Distance Upgrade Algorithm) as a novel idea to improve and solve the problem of void. In VODUA, nodes exchange routing graphs that indicate information of connection among the nodes and if there exist a stuck node that cannot forward packets, it is terminated using Distance Cost(DC). In this study, we indicate that packets reach successfully their destination while avoiding void through upgrading of DC. We designed the VODUA algorithm to find valid routes through faster delivery and less energy consumption without requirement for an additional recovery algorithm. Moreover, by using VODUA, a network can be adapted rapidly to node's failure or topological change. This is because the algorithm utilizes information of single hop instead of topological information of entire network. Simulation results show that VODUA can deliver packets from source node to destination with shorter time and less hops than other pre-existing algorithms like GPSR and DUA.

Vehicular network is one of the most important subjects for researchers in recent years. Anycast routing protocols have many applications in vehicular ad hoc networks. The aim of an anycast protocol is sending packets to at least one of the receivers among candidate receivers. Studies done on anycast protocols over vehicular networks, however, have capability of implementation on some applications; they are partial, and application specific. No need to say that the lack of a comprehensive study, having a strong analytical background, is felt. Mathematical modeling in vehicular networks is difficult because the topology of these networks is dynamic. In this paper, it has been demonstrated that vehicular networks can be modeled based on time-expanded networks. The focus of this article is on geographical anycast. Three different scenarios were proposed including sending geographic anycast packet to exactly-one-destination, to at-least-one-destination, and to K-anycast destination, which can cover important applications of geographical anycast routing protocols. As the proposed model is of MILP type, a decentralized heuristic algorithm was presented. The evaluation process of this study includes the production of numerical results by Branch and Bound algorithm in general algebraic modeling system (GAMS) software and simulation of the proposed protocol in OMNET++ simulator. The comprehension of the result of proposed protocol and model shows that the applicability of this proposed protocol and its reactive conformity with the presented models based on presented metrics.
