Objectives: The purpose of this article was to assess epidemiological characteristics and recommendations for strengthening national response and preparedness after MERS-CoV outbreak in Korea, 2015. Methods: The author reviewed epidemiological reports and policy recommendations on MERS-CoV outbreak in Korea, 2015. Results: There was no evidence that genetical difference between the MERS viruses in the Republic of Korea and recent viruses in the Middle East. From the index case to last laboratory-confirmed case, there were 186 laboratory-confirmed cases that included 36 deaths(19.4%), all of whom appear epidemiologically linked to the index cases or subsequent secondary, tertiary, and quaternary cases. This outbreak spread to hospitals through nosocomial transmission. At least, three large clusters were investigated. However, there was at least one case of community transmission of MERS-CoV. Several factors had contributed to the MERS outbreak in Korea, 2015 that including epidemiological characteristics, and infrastructure of national healthcare system for preventing and controlling emerging infectious diseases. Conclusions: It is very important that to share experiences and identify underlying causes of this outbreak for prevention and control of emerging infectious disease in the future; including epidemiology, clinical features, and public health response and preparedness.
Alstroemeria plants are widely cultivated in many countries especially in Western Europe and North America and popularity has increased in recently due to its long-base life, large variety of colors and low energy requirement during cultivation period. So far, more than 60 species have been released on the commercial market in the world. To meet the demand of consumer and develop the elite Alstroemeria cultivars, conventional breeding including cross-hybridization and selection as well as mutation breeding were used. However, as other important ornamental plants such as lily, rose, carnation and orchids accepted the biotechnological methods, this newly-born approach should be applied and developed an optimized the genetic transformation system. Then, this biotechnological approach can be fused with the conventional breeding methods and thus can be contributed to the production of elite Alstroemeria plants containing agriculturally good genetic traits which are useful for the both farmers and consumers in the future. In this paper, we reviewed the botanical and genetical features of Alstroemeria plants and its biotechnological approaches in the last decades.

Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) is an economically important disease of swine that occurs all over the swine industry worldwide. It was first observed in the Unite States in 1987 then in Europe in 1990. It has been described in Japan and in Korea in 1993. PRRS virus is divided into two distinct types, North American and European, genetically. Based on our limited knowledge there has been no report on the existence of European PRRSV. But according to the government's Korea Customs Service there has been many importations of breeding pigs from Europe. These seem to make an estimate that European PRRSV could be introduced in Korea by inflow of European breeding pigs. We first detected the European PRRSV could be introduced in Korean pig farms by using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Further, it is also identified that there are not only North American PRRSV antibody but also a European PRRSV antibody. According to the genetical and serological experiment results, the presence of established North American PRRSV in Korea is due to the use of live vaccines made of North American PRRSV strain as well field virus infection, and the European PRRSV is possibly introduced from imported breeding stock.

To elucidate the molecular genetical properties of the canine parvoviruses isolated from the diseased puppies in the regions of Kyunggi and Chungnam provinces, the replicative form (RF) DNA of four field isolates were compared with those of two attenuated vaccine strains and a reference strains of CPV by restriction endonuclease analysis (REA). REA by Hinf I showed that three CPV isolates except CPV-V15 had an identical banding pattern with two vaccine strains, one standard strain and feline panleukopenia virus (FPLV). In CPV-V15 strain the fourth fragment of DNA with 800 bp was deleted. REA by Bgl II and Pst I indicated that CPV-V15 and FPLV had a bigger second fragment than those of the other strains of CPV. Meanwhile REA by Bam HI revealed that all the field isolates and vaccine strains used in this experiment showed similar banding patterns.

In this study gene encoding structural proteins of a CPV isolate was cloned and sequenced to elucidate the molecular genetical properties of the canine parvoviruses isolated from the field. Six recombinant plasmids of pEP3, p1471, p2070, pEP069, pEP338 and p14711p were constructed from the map positions 22 to 98 of RF DNA to clone the VP1 and VP2 genes of CPV-V20. Sequentialy the gene comprising 3780 nucleotides were sequenced by dideoxy chain termination method. When nucleotide sequence of gene encoding the structural proteins of CPV-V20 was compared with those of other strains, CPV-N, CPV-d and CPV-780929 published previously, DNA, homologies to CPV-V20 were 99.87% with CPV-N, 99.73% with CPV-d, 96.85% with CPV-780929 and 98.4% with FPLV-Carl, respectively. The DNA sequence data of CPV-V20 showed seven point mutations and also deletion of 135 nucleotides from the nucleotide position 4745 to 4879 located in the 3'-noncoding region of CPV-N.
Since the existing cave type classification has no variety but was limited to the structural, genetical and dimensional classification, we need the new cave type classification. When we analyze the theoretical background of cluster analysis, the cave type can be classified in consideration of diverse variables depending on the selection of variables to use and the usability of such classification is very high. With the practical consideration on the internal environment of cave and surrounding environment, three classifications are available; first, numerical classification by the dimension and form of cave; second, classification by the use of land out of the cave and geographic features; third, classification by the feature of location related to the surrounding areas of cave.

Autophagy is a process of eliminating damaged or unnecessary proteins and organelles, thereby maintaining intracellular homeostasis. Deregulation of autophagy is associated with several diseases including cancer. Contradictory dual roles of autophagy have been well established in cancer. Cytoprotective mechanism of autophagy has been extensively investigated for overcoming resistance to cancer therapies including radiotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and chemotherapy. Selective autophagy inhibitors that directly target autophagic process have been developed for cancer treatment. Efficacies of autophagy inhibitors have been tested in various pre-clinical cancer animal models. Combination therapies of autophagy inhibitors with chemotherapeutics are being evaluated in clinal trials. In this review, we will focus on genetical and pharmacological perturbations of autophagy-related proteins in different steps of autophagic process and their therapeutic benefits. We will also summarize combination therapies of autophagy inhibitors with chemotherapies and their outcomes in pre-clinical and clinical studies. Understanding of current knowledge of development, progress, and application of cytoprotective autophagy inhibitors in combination therapies will open new possibilities for overcoming drug resistance and improving clinical outcomes.

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder(ADHD) is the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in child psychiatry. The etiology or ADHD is not completely understood, but involved in genetical and/or neurocognitive deficits. This article reviews the current state of the literature pertaining to the neurodevelopmental aspects of ADHD. Although the neurodevelopment of ADHD remains unclear, emerging evidence documents its genetic and neurobiologic underpinnings. A pathophysiology of ADHD has not been fully characterized, although genetic, neurobiologic, neuroimaging, and neuropsychological studies of ADHD consistently implicates dysfunction in the fronto-subcortical network and abnormality in the dopaminergic and noradnergic systems. Furthermore some suggests that the timing of aberrant brain development in ADHD could be in early gestation and genetic and/or early environmental influences on brain development in ADHD are fixed, nonprogressive. Although many studies provide evidences for the important or psychosocial or environmental adversities in ADHD, they may be not specific predictors of ADHD but nonspecific triggers of an underlying predisposition or modifiers of the course of disorder.

The genus Ganoderma is typical wood-rotting fungi and its fruiting body has been used as an important herb in oriental medicine. Recent research discovered antitumor components from Ganoderma lncidum. Various Ganoderma species are being cultivated in Korea. However, taxonomic system of the genus Ganoderma has been based mainly on the macromorphology of fruiting bodies and the ultrastructural characteristics of basidiospores. Since there are similar characteristics in Ganoderma mycelia grown on the same artificial media, it is suggested that the compatibility of the fungi by di-mon mating be used as an aid to determine the identity of species in addition to the conventional characterization. In this study, we examined physiological and genetical properties such as growth temperature, pH, compatibility and enzyme or protein patterns of laccase, esterase and cellular proteins of G. lucidum RZ, G. tsugae and Ganoderma species cultivated in Korea by electrophoresis for characterization of the isolates. We found that compatibility test and isozyme patterns of laccase and esterase of the mycelia could be used for the differentiation of the isolates. These results showed that Ganoderma species cultivated in Korea is genetically similar to G. lucidum but physiologically closer to G. tsugae than to G. lucidum.
This report is to observe the amino acid composition at silk fibroins among varieties by using paper chromatography method and to study how they may concern with the genetical problem and the biochemical synthesis of the fibroin in silkgland. The results reached are as follows: 1. The amino acid composition of silk fibroin among varieties were observed as similar with each other on the paper chromatogram pictures. 2. In spite of the results of the amino acid composition analysis was similar with other workers results, there was some difference among varieties in numerical analysis. 3. The amino acid composition was considered to concern somewhat with the genetic problem of silkworm. 4. Some nutritive amino acids are considered to related with the worm growth more than the silk fibroin. 5. The paper chromatography of this report showed an unknown amino acid which was not found before in specific species silk fibroin and it is imagined as Hydroxyproline in view of other worker's graphy result. 6. The biochemical synthesis mechanism of silk fibroin in the silk gland, neither Stepwise process nor Template, could stand with the results of this paper satisfactory one side.
