  • Genetic algorithms(GA) are based on the principles of natural genetics and natural selection. The algorithm searches an optimum design point using information based on the fitness function evaluated for the population of many design points. An application of GA on optimal design of a truss structure is studied. The terminology and the operating procedures common in GA are formalized by establishing similarities between GA and genetics from biology. In using GA, (1) coding of the design variables, (2) formulation of the fitness function, (3) setting of the termination condition, and (4) establishment of the probabilities are essential. These four points are discussed in the paper.

  • This paper presents a simultaneous optimization approach of case-based reasoning (CBR) using a genetic algorithm(GA) for the prediction of stock price index. Prior research suggested many hybrid models of CBR and the GA for selecting a relevant feature subset or optimizing feature weights. Most studies, however, used the GA for improving only a part of architectural factors for the CBR system. However, the performance of CBR may be enhanced when these factors are simultaneously considered. In this study, the GA simultaneously optimizes multiple factors of the CBR system. Experimental results show that a GA approach to simultaneous optimization of CBR outperforms other conventional approaches for the prediction of stock price index.

  • Optimizing composite structures to exploit their maximum potential is a realistic application with promising returns. In this research, simultaneous maximization of the fundamental frequency and frequency separation between the first two modes by optimizing the fiber angles is considered. A high-fidelity design optimization methodology is developed by combining the high-accuracy of finite element method with iterative improvement capability of metaheuristic algorithms. Three powerful nature-inspired optimization algorithms viz. a genetic algorithm (GA), a particle swarm optimization (PSO) variant and a cuckoo search (CS) variant are used. Advanced memetic features are incorporated in the PSO and CS to form their respective variants-RPSOLC (repulsive particle swarm optimization with local search and chaotic perturbation) and CHP (co-evolutionary host-parasite). A comprehensive set of benchmark solutions on several new problems are reported. Statistical tests and comprehensive assessment of the predicted results show CHP comprehensively outperforms RPSOLC and GA, while RPSOLC has a little superiority over GA. Extensive simulations show that the on repeated trials of the same experiment, CHP has very low variability. About 50% fewer variations are seen in RPSOLC as compared to GA on repeated trials.

  • This study presents a genetic algorithm-based method fur optimizing control parameters in the pressure control of electro-hydraulic pump with variable displacement. Genetic algorithms are general-purpose optimization methods based on natural evolution and genetics and search the optimal control parameters maximizing a measure that evaluates the performance of a system. Four control gains of the PI-PD cascade controller for an electro-hydraulic pressure control system are optimized using a genetic algorithm in the experiment. Optimized gains are confirmed by inspecting the fitness distribution which represents system performance in gain spaces. It is shown that genetic algorithm is an efficient scheme in optimizing control parameters of the pressure control of electro-hydraulic pump with variable displacement.

  • Genetic algorithms (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) are the most famous optimization techniques among various modern heuristic optimization techniques. These two approaches identify the solution to a given objective function, but they employ different strategies and computational effort; therefore, a comparison of their performance is needed. This paper presents the application and performance comparison of the PSO and GA optimization techniques for a static synchronous series compensator-based controller design. The design objective is to enhance power system stability. The design problem of the FACTS-based controller is formulated as an optimization problem, and both PSO and GA optimization techniques are employed to search for the optimal controller parameters.

  • This research study presents the development and application of an Elitist Genetic Algorithm (Elitist GA) for solving the resource-constrained project scheduling problem, which is one of the most challenging problems in construction engineering. Main features of the developed algorithm are that the elitist roulette selection operator is developed to preserve the best individual solution for the next generation so as to obtain the improved solution, and that parallel schedule generation scheme is used to generate a feasible solution to the problem. The experimental results on standard problem sets indicate that the proposed algorithm not only produces reasonably good solutions to the problems over the heuristic method and other GA, but also can find the optimal and/or near optimal solutions for the large-sized problems with multiple resources within a reasonable amount of time that will be applicable to the construction industry. This paper will help researchers and/or practitioners in the construction project scheduling software area with alternative means to find the optimal schedules by utilizing the advantages of the Elitist GA.

  • This paper deals with an methodology for acquiring optimal order of rational function model in FDNE(frequency dependent network equivalents) with GA(genetic Algorithm). In order to analyze the modern power system with huge complexity, an practical and efficient equivalent model is needed which represents the system's characteristics of transient phenomenon. this paper shows developing a z domain rational function model which have the resultant coefficient from proposed GA simulation. To demonstrate this methodology, some simulations are performed with practical power system of NZ which applied with fault condition and nonlinear converter load.

  • In this paper a methodology has been proposed to compute the parameters of the multilayer earth model using a genetic algorithm(GA). The results provided by the GA constitute the indispensable data that can be used in circuital or field simulations of grounding systems. This methodology allows to proceed toward a very efficient simulation of the grounding system and an accurate calculation of potential on the ground's surface. The sets of soil resistivity used for GA are measured in Jeju area.

  • The focus of this paper is on the development and implementation of a methodology for automated design of discrete structural systems. The research is aimed at utilizing Genetic Algorithms (GA) as an automated design tool. Several key enhancements are made to the simple GA in order to increase the efficiency, reliability and accuracy of the methodology for code-based design of structures. The AISC-ASD design code is used to illustrate the design methodology. Small as well as large-scale problems are solved. Simultaneous sizing, shape and topology optimal designs of structural framed systems subjected to static and dynamic loads are considered. Comparisons with results from prior publications and solution to new problems show that the enhancements made to the GA do indeed make the design system more efficient and robust.
