  • This paper presents a generation rescheduling method for the enhancement of transient stability in power systems. The priority and the candidate generators for rescheduling are calculated by using the energy margin sensitivity. The generation rescheduling formulates the Lagrangian function with the fuel cost and emission such as NOx and SOx from power plants. The generation rescheduling searches for the solution that minimizes the Lagrangian function by using the Newton’s approach. While the Pareto optimum in the fuel cost and emission minimization has a drawback of finding a number of non-dominated solutions, the proposed approach can explore the non-inferior solutions of the multiobjective optimization problem more efficiently. The method proposed is applied to a 4-machine 6-bus system to demonstrate its effectiveness.

  • LPG gains many advantages of a high octane number low emissions and low cost over conventional fuel. The fuel has been naturally used in engines to save running cost but the first generation fuel feeding system was not satisfied with stringent requirement for exhaust emissions, A liquid direct injection system into a cylinder has been suggested as a next generation system to maximize a fuel economy as well as to reduce emissions. In this paper LPG sprays are compared with diesel sprays in a high pressured surrounding condition in order to understand the high pressure spray characteristics, The spray images show that LPG spray penetrates further soon after the injection then the sprays stays in a distant. it may explain the flashing effect of LPG.

  • The fuel cell is one of the promising environment-friendly energy sources for the next generation. The fuel cell provides good energy efficiency above 40% without pollution or noise. Different fuel cell types are usually distinguished by the kind of electrolyte. Among these, the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) has advantages of high power density. low operating temperature, relatively quick start-up, and rapid response to varying loads. The bipolar plate is a major component of the PEM fuel cell stack, and it takes a large portion of stack volume, weight and cost. In this study, as alternative materials for bipolar plate of PEM fuel cells, graphite composites were fabricated by compression molding and by machining. Graphite particles mixed with epoxy resin were used as the main substance to provide electric conductivity. Flow channels were fabricated by compression molding with design of experiments (DOE) to evaluate moldability. The cost for compression molding of graphite-composite bipolar plate was compared with machining cost to make the same bipolar plate.

  • A system of model price data for the fuel cost estimation of the Go-ri plant is developed. With the application of MITCOST-II computer code the levelized unit fuel costs over the entire lifetime of the plant are evaluated. It is found that the overall levelized unit fuel cost is 7.332 mills/Kwhe and that the uranium ore and enrichment service represent more than 85% of the unit cost, assuming a simple once-through fuel cycle process with no reprocessing of the spent fuel. The effects of the cost fluctuations in these fuel cycle elements and the capacity factor changes are also evaluated. The results indicate that the fuel costs are most sensitive to the variation of uranium ore price. Efforts must, therefore, be employed for the arrangement of cheap and timely supply of uranium ore in order to achieve the economic generation of nuclear power.

  • Recently, lack of power reserve margin was observed quite often. In this paper, we studied the method to secure power source for a short time, to cut the utility power peak load, and to reduce the users electricity bills. Emergency diesel generator of an office building is to be converted into a dual-fuel engine generator which is responsible for a portion of the peak load. Compared to the conventional diesel fuel generator, the proposed dual-fuel engine is able to reduce the generation power cost by dual-fuel combustion, and it also mitigates the building's utility power peak load by charging the building's peak load. If the dead resources (a group of emergency dual-fuel engine generators), as a Virtual Power Plant, are operating in peak time, we can significantly reduce future large power development costs. We investigated the current general purpose electricity bills as well as the records of the building electric power usage, and calculated diesel engine generator renovation costs, generation fuel costs, driving conditions, and savings in electricity bills. The proposed dual-fuel engine generation method reduces 18.1% of utility power peak load, and turned out to be highly attractive investment alternative which shows more than 27% of IRR, 76 million won of NPV, and 20~53 months of payback periods. The results of this study are expected to be useful to developing the policy & strategy of the energy department.

  • According to Electricity Acceleration Law of Rural Area recently, the needs for replacement of a small scale diesel power generation facility which supplied electricity to 10-50 households Remote Islands has been revealed due to high operating and maintenance cost of Diesel Power Generation. Optimization of electric power system for Small Remote Islands must be made considering the economics, reliability and stability as power sources and estimation of total construction cost of those power stations. For its purpose, an assessment of power generation options such as Photovoltaic, Fuel cell, Wind-hybrid was implemented, economic evaluation of power supply shows the Photovoltaic, Fuel Cell for few household's islands and Diesel, Wind-hybrid for more inhabited islands. Power supplied by Diesel shows the best response to increasing electric demand and system reliability even with its lower economic value. Those who are in charge of power planning have to pay attention to system reliability, stability and operating characteristics of candidate's power supply besides its economics.

  • This paper describes retail cost through scenario in the ratio of CG(Centralized Generation) and DG(Decentralized Generation) that constructs new generation capacity in the future. it is not calculated for the supply, but for demand considering an advantage of DG. In the Korea Power System, retail cost that composed of construction, T&D, fuel, maintenance and environment shows macro-trend that power system planning through penetration for DG will be more significant.

  • The performance prediction model of a solid oxide fuel cell stack has been developed using deep neural network technique, one of the machine learning methods. The machine learning has been received much interest in various fields, including energy system mo- deling. Using machine learning technique can save time and cost requried in developing an energy system model being compared to the conventional method, that is a combination of a mathematical modeling and an experimental validation. Results reveal that the mean average percent error, root mean square error, and coefficient of determination (R2) range 1.7515, 0.1342, 0.8597, repectively, in maximum. To improve the predictability of the model, the pre-processing is effective and interpolative machine learning and application is more accurate than the extrapolative cases.

  • A probabilistic production costing model based on the economic load dispatch has been developed. Objective function is composed of fuel cost which is a function of generation output and the failure cost. Coefficients of the failure cost is determined from the known equivalent generation cost. The model is compared with other existing methodolgies and the excellent results are obtained.

  • This paper represents an analysis of the economic impact of firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures in diesel engine power plants. The objects of analysis is a power plant with electricity generation capacity (300 kW). Using performance data of original diesel engines, the fuel consumption characteristics of the duel fuel engines were simulated. Then, economic assessment was carried out using the performance data and the net present value method. A special focus was given to the evaluation of fuel cost saving when firing natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil mixtures instead of the pure diesel firing case. Analyses were performed by assuming fuel price changes in the market as well as by using current prices. The analysis results showed that co-firing of natural gas/diesel and natural gas/by-product oil would provide considerable fuel cost saving, leading to meaningful economic benefits.
