The present study is aimed to evaluate forest health in a fragmented urban forest using characteristics of insect communities. Ants (Formicidae) and ground beetles (Carabidae) surveyed by pitfall trap method in the Hongneung forest located in the urban area of Seoul were compared with those in the Gwangneung forest. The Gwangneung forest is supposed to be health due to its high biodiversity and well-conserved nature. Ants of the Hongneung forest was much more abundant compared with those of the Gwangneung forest. However, ground beetles showed the opposite patterns; much more abundant in the Gwangneung forest than in the Hongneung forest. Species richness was higher in the Gwangneung forest than in the Hongneung forest, but species diversity was higher in the Hongneung forest. In the Hongneung forest, forest specialist species and generalist species were balanced, whereas few forest specialists dominated in the Gwangneung forest. This dominance decreased species diversity in those Gwangneung forest. Thus, characteristics of insect community in the Hongneung forest were greatly different with those in the Gwangneung forest.
Caballeronia sordidicola strain PAMC 26510 was isolated from Psoroma sp., a lichen material, collected from Barton Peninsula of King George Island in Antarctica. The draft genome sequence of PAMC 26510 consisted of 224 contigs and they was 7,872,143 base pairs with 59.7% G+C content. The genome included 7,580 protein coding sequences and 6 ribosomal RNA genes and 46 tRNA genes. The strain PAMC 26510 is also a metabolic generalist as we have observed in previous genomic studies in the arctic strain of Caballeronia sordidicola. The draft genomic sequences of PAMC 26510 had six CRISPR arrays on six contigs, and there were two clusters of CRISPR-associated genes that were linked with respective CRISPR arrays.

Prior research regarding the macro patterns of industry convergence has focused on the inter-industry patent network and cross-industry movements of products or services. This article provides a novel approach, according to which human resources embodying explicit and implicit knowledge and technologies are important media driving industry convergence. Drawing on GOMS data (2015-2019) and using information of university graduates' academic majors and their occupations, this article proposes an analytic strategy by which to understand the macro patterns and structural features of industry convergence. Specifically, we build unbalanced bipartite networks of major-industry (occupation) relations, and construct the measures of the industry's niche width and the measure of the average degree of convergence of majors that each industry is linked to. By crossing the two measures, we identify four groups of industries(occupations); specialist, generalist, partial convergence, and full convergence. The convergence group is composed of industries (occupations) that acquire human resources from a number of academic majors each of which plays a role of glue connecting several local industries.
Two-spotted spider mite (TSSM), Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) is one of the major pests in apple orchards. TSSM was known to show different population dynamics depending on apple cultivars. We tested the host plant preference and fitness of TSSM on the leaves of 3 apple cultivars, Fuji, Tsugaru, and Hongro. TSSM showed higher behavioral preference to Fuji than Tsugaru and Hongro, and showed a higher fecundity in Fuji. The immature development of this mite was the shortest in Fuji and longest in Hongro. Total fecundities were not significantly different among cultivars, but daily fecundity was higher and longevity was lower in Fuji. Hongro was the less preferred cultivar for TSSM, and showed the lowest fitness by life table parameters. These results could explain the possible mechanisms of differential population dynamics among apple cultivars. Further study including diverse apple cultivars currently available in Korea could help to deploy time- and cultivar- specific IPM tactics.

Wetland ecosystems act as natural freshwater purification systems, but their rich biodiversity is being threatened with the introduction of the non-native freshwater snail, Pomacea canaliculata. This study was conducted to measure the herbivory effects and growth rate of P. canaliculata on common macrophytes: Ipomoea aquatica, Ipomoea batatas, Pandanus amaryllifolius and Cucurma longa. In separate experiments, the macrophyte species were served as the snails' food as individual species and simultaneously. In the individual treatment, the growth pattern and rate were based on the snails' weight (mg/snail/day; n = 9) while the individual feeding consumption (mg/snail/day) was calculated from the leftover food. In the simultaneous treatment, the herbivory effects were evaluated as the feeding preference (%) from observations every two hours, while the total feeding consumption (mg) was calculated based on the food remaining after a 12-hour experiment (3 replicates: total n = 27). The results indicated that the growth pattern was significant for snails grazing on I. aquatica but not when other macrophyte species were eaten. The individual feeding consumption was higher when using I. aquatica than P. amaryllifolius but the growth rate for snails grazing on I. aquatica and P. amaryllifolius did not differ significantly. Meanwhile, the consumption of C. longa deterred the snails' growth rate. Although the snails consumed all the macrophytes in the individual experiment, when given the species simultaneously, the feeding preference and total feeding consumption were directed significantly more toward I. aquatica than P. amaryfollius and C. longa. We conclude that P. canaliculata is a generalist feeder given a limited choice of food but tends to show a strong feeding preference after being introduced to more food choices. These findings indicate that the introduction of P. canaliculata into wetland ecosystems may increase the herbivory effects on macrophytes, making these ecosystems vulnerable to the impact of eutrophication and biodiversity reduction.
Our study was based on the long-term surveys with respect to the major reservoirs located in the Yeongsan and Seomjin river basins. A total of 45 survey sites have been surveyed four times a year from 2008 to 2017. We identified 166 zooplankton species, including 127 rotifers, 26 cladocerans, and 13 copepods. Mean population density and species number of small reservoirs were higher than those of mid and large reservoirs. Considering outliers exceeding the 90th percentile between species occupancy and mean abundance, 10 of 11 habitat generalists were rotifers, and Bosmina longirostris was the only cladoceran. Habitat specialist consisted of three species of rotifers and emerged from one to three survey sites. According to the modularity results, it was found that the survey sites covering the entire river basins were characterized into five groups, which was similar to the classification by maximum water surface areas(MWSA). The result of the eigenvector centrality showed that the size of MWSA had a greater impact on the similarity of zooplankton community structure between reservoirs than the difference in distance between reservoirs. In the case of survey points in near dam or estuary bank of Juam and Youngsan reservoirs, modularity class were separated from other internal survey points of those. Given that the zooplankton interactions may contribute to freshwater functions more than species diversity. These topological features provide new insight into studying zooplankton distribution patterns, their organization and impacts on freshwater-associated function.
Diversity, abundance, species distributions and distributions of two strategists (specialist and geceralist) of butterflies were investigated monthly from June 1996 to Oct. 1996 by line transect method in the Chunbul-dong valley from park gate to Yangpok Sanjang. The butterfly faunas of the eight regions in Kwangwon province, Gyunggi proavince and Pusan were also studied by the same method to assess diversity and abundance of butterfly community in the study region. The 18 butterfly species in 7 families were found in this study and the 48 butterfly species in 7 families were distributed in the study area from thes study and the other researches. The 30 butterfly species reported in the other studies were not found in this study and Kaniska canace L. of them would be to decrease in density. In the study area, the common species were Artogeia melete M., Neptis sappho P. and Libythea celtis F.. The representative Korean common butterflies such as Artogeia rapae L., Colias erate E. and Papillio xuthus L. were rare. The PCA(Principal Component Analysis) ordinations indicate that habitat disturbance by human would be major factor for butterfly community and species distribution. Difference was not found in diversity according to habitat disturbance. Abundance, however, was higher in the disturbed region than the undisturbed region. Compared with the other regions, abundance was greatly lower and diversity was slightly lower than that of the other regions. Two strategists exhibited different distribution patterns. Generalists were found more commonly in the disturbed region and widely distributed in both of the disturbed region and the undisturbed region than specialists.
The effect ground-cover weeds on the occurrence of apple pests and their natural enemies was studied in an apple orchard in Ahnsung, Kyung-gi do during seasons of 1993 and 1994. The major apple pests and their parasitoids and predators were surveyed on the apple tree canopy in tow experimental plots; a weed-free lot where all weeds were removed by herbicide treatment, and a mowed plot where weeds were allowed restrictly by cutting with an asickle. Also, a sweep net sampling was taken from ground-cover weeds in the mowed plot. There were no significant differences in the abundance of mite and aphids between two plots, although mite densities tend to be lower in the mowed plot. The apple leaf miner, Phyllonorycter ringoniella, was significantly fewer in the mowed plot,. The densities of natural enemies of mites and aphids were slightly higher in the mowed plot. The parasitism of apple leaf miner in the mowed plot was 6~10% and 20~25% higher than that in the weed-free plot in 1993 and 994, respectively. Several natural enemies such as Apanteles kuwayamai (Braconidae), Orius sauteri (Anthocoridae), Chrysopa sp. (Chrysopidae), coccinellidae, and Eulophidae were collected both from weeds and the apple trees, However, potential apple pests were not observed on weeds. The development of insect community on the apple tree canopy was restricted by the pesticide spray on apple trees, while the insect community on weeds was maintained without significant destruction by pesticides spray on apple trees. Consequentely, the ground-cover weeds under apple trees affected occurrences of apple pests and their natural enemies in apple trees. te specialist natural enemies such as apple leaf miner's parasitoids dispersed from weeds to the apple canopy and affected apple leaf miner density significantly. However, generalist predators that have preys available on weeds stayed on weeds, hence their control effects for mites and aphids on the apple canopy were low.

The black soldier fly (BSF), Hermetia illucens, is a generalist detritivore that is usually exploited for recycling environmental wastes, including food remnants. These insects can also be used to produce antibiotics for medical applications. For this purpose, flies need to be mass-reared using an automatic rearing system that generates various sounds. Insects use sound as a means of communication for mating or warning against predators. Thus, extrinsic sounds may interrupt the normal physiological processes of insects. In this study, we analyzed the physiological changes due to various sound treatments at $25^{\circ}C$ and 8:16 h (L:D) photoperiod. At 95 dB, larvae were exposed to different sound frequencies (0-5,000 Hz). The treated larvae were adversely affected by the high-frequency sounds and showed significant reduction in pupation and adult emergence. Different sound intensities (0-105 dB) at 5,000 Hz caused significant changes in the pupation and survival of the adults at 85 dB or above. Under a stress sound condition (5,000 Hz, 95 dB), the BSF larvae exhibited aberrations in the expression of genes related to the immune system and digestion. These results indicate that high-frequency sound treatments at or above 85 dB act as a stress sound to BSF development.
