  • The purpose of this study was to propose a method for the effective management of toothbrush contamination. Toothbrush microbial contamination was analyzed according to the duration of toothbrush use, frequency of toothbrush use per day, and toothbrush storage location. We also analyzed the microbial reduction effect of vinegar, antimicrobial mouth rinse, bamboo salt, and baking soda, which are sterilization materials that can be easily used every day. We collected 45 toothbrushes from university dormitories from May to June 2018. To determine the degree of microbiological contamination with general bacteria, coliform bacteria, and Staphylococcus aureus, bristle samples were cultured at $36^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours using 3M$^{TM}$ Petrifilm plates and then measured based on Petrifilm evaluation criteria. Toothbrush microorganisms were analyzed according to the duration of use, frequency of use per day, storage location, and effect of each sterilization material. General bacteria, coliforms, and S. aureus contamination increased with frequency and duration of use (p<0.05). In particular, S. aureus showed a statistically significant increase to 36.15 CFU/ml after 1 month, 504.23 CFU/ml after 2 months, and 2,386.67 CFU/ml after 3 months (p<0.05). We found that 1% vinegar was the most effective substance for reducing general bacteria, coliforms, and S. aureus. In addition, 1% antimicrobial mouth rinse solution applied for 5 minutes was the most effective in reducing S. aureus. It is crucial to recognize the importance of toothbrush care and store toothbrushes in a dry place and replace them periodically. We recommend use of vinegar and antimicrobial mouth rinse solution to disinfect toothbrushes. These should be applied as a 1% solution for at least 1 minute. Proper care of toothbrushes is important in maintaining oral health as well as overall health. Instructions on toothbrush care should be given when teaching children or adults how to brush teeth.

  • This study aimed to compare the elimination effect of dental plaque between general toothbrushes and chewing toothbrushes, so as to investigate whether the chewing toothbrushes have the practicality as the alternatives of general toothbrushes and their utilities in the real life. The study subjects were 30 healthy adults in their 20s who maintained the good dental condition over 16 teeth without systemic diseases, and the decline rates of dental plaque index after usages of general and chewing toothbrushes were calculated. Upon the comparisons of dental plaque decline rates before and after the usages of general and chewing toothbrushes, PHI index was declined from 7.02 to 1.91 in case of the general toothbrush demonstrating dental plaque decline by 72.79%, while it was declined from 6.72 to 4.08 in the chewing toothbrush demonstrating decline by 39.29%. Currently, a variety of dental care items are available in the Korean market, hence, various studies are required on the dental care items so as for the people to properly choose the items.

  • The Toothbrush radio relic associated with the merging cluster 1RXS J060303.3 is presumed to be produced by relativistic electrons accelerated at merger-driven shocks. Since the shock Mach number inferred from the observed radio spectral index, Mradio ≈ 2.8, is larger than that estimated from X-ray observations, MX ≲ 1.5, we consider the re-acceleration model in which a weak shock of Ms ≈ 1.2 - 1.5 sweeps through the intracluster plasma with a preshock population of relativistic electrons. We find the models with a power-law momentum spectrum with the slope, s ≈ 4.6, and the cutoff Lorentz factor, γe,c ≈ 7-8×104 can reproduce reasonably well the observed profiles of radio uxes and integrated radio spectrum of the head portion of the Toothbrush relic. This study confirms the strong connection between the ubiquitous presence of fossil relativistic plasma originated from AGNs and the shock-acceleration model of radio relics in the intracluster medium.

  • To improve oral hygiene management, the effects of toothbrush training on general oral hygiene based on the simplified oral hygiene index(S-OHI) and degree of knowledge about toothbrushing were examined. Pre-and post-training changes in the S-OHI (lower score = better oral health status) showed a significant decrease in score in all variables (gender, age, marital status, occupation, and level of education).Pre- and post-training changes in the degree of knowledge about toothbrushing showed a significant increase. Negative correlations between the S-OHI, oral health status, and degree of knowledge about toothbrushing and the S-OHI and the Decayed, Missing, Filled (DMF) index (the better the oral cavity environment, the lower the DMF index) were observed. Positive effects of repeated toothbrush training on the maintenance of healthy oral cavity environment and continuous oral health management were observed, as reflected by the correct toothbrushing-related knowledge and skills.
