Difference Limen for Just Noticeable Change of Booming Sensation in Frequency (차량 부밍소음의 청감 변화 인지를 위한 주파수 역치)

  • Among many auditory feelings for the vehicle interior noise, booming is considered as the most important nuisance to the passenger and developer. Because the main source of booming noise is a power train system including engine, in general, it consists of tonal components related to fundamental engine rotation and its harmonics including the firing frequency. Therefore, it is demanded to extract the effective tonal components only by using pitch extraction algorithm based on the place theory enable to find aurally relevant tonal components. However, there is a difference between booming sensation and pitch perception according to frequency change of tonal component. In this study, subjective listening test using a tracking method was performed to find the difference limen for just noticeable change of booming sensation in frequency. 20 Koreans and 10 Japanese were participated in this test and the results obtained from Koreans and Japanese were compared with each other. Finally, 5Hz was determined as the difference limen for just noticeable change of booming sensation in frequency, and by applying this value to booming analysis using pitch concept, it was confirmed that the degree of prediction of booming sensation was improved.

Development of Optimum Management System for Irrigation Facilities (수리시설물 최적관리 시스템 개발)

  • For the efficient operation and maintenance( 0 & M), irrigation facilities were graded on the basis of their indices related to the 0 & M condition and the characteristics of reservoirs managed by Farmland Improvement Association(FIA) were examined. The results obtained are summarized as follows : 1. Characteristics of reservoirs include effective storage capacity, irrigation area, basin area, height and length of bank. Each characteristic is scored by the principle component analysis method. Variables which compose one index are categorized on the basis of their unit and each variable is scored so that the score of each unit sums to 100 for each index. 2. The Optimum MAnagement System of Irrigation Facilities(OMASIF) for Pyoungtaek area was developed by connecting general data of the irrigation facilities to image data. The database system is divided into three tables; LookUp Table, Facility Table, and Image Table. Image Table is again divided into five sub-tables, Image Table, Construction Cost Table, Acreage Table, 0 & M Cost Table, and Specification Table. 3. The evaluating criteria for the 0 & M of irrigation facilities can be established using the OMASIF. Irrigation facilities evaluated as poor state by the criteria should be repaired.

Development of float off Operation Design for Mdlti Semi-submersible Barges with Symmetrical Stability Casings (반 잠수식 복수부선의 진수설계)

  • This paper presents the design concept and operation results of float-off for FSO (340,000 DWT Class, ELF AMENAM KPONO Project) built on the ground, without dry dock facilities. It was the first attempt to build FSO, completely, on the ground and launch it using DBU (Double Barge Unit, which was connected by rigid frame structure.) The major characteristics of FSO, which are similar to general VLCC type hull, including topside structure, weigh 51,000 metric ton. In order to have sufficient stability during the deck immersion of DBU, while passing through a minimum water plane area zone, proper trim control was completed with LMC (Load Master Computer). The major features of the monitoring system include calculation for transverse bending moment, shear force, local strength check of each connector, based on component stress, and deformation check during the load-out and float-off. Another major concern during the operation was to avoid damages at the bottom and sides of FSO, due to motion & movement after free-floating; therefore, adequate clearances between DBU and FSO were to be provided, and guide posts were installed to prevent side damage of the DBU casings. This paper also presents various measures that indecate the connector bending moment, damage stability analysis, and mooring of DBU during float off.

Automatic Reading System for On-off Type DNA Chip

  • In this study we propose an automatic reading system for diagnostic DNA chips. We define a general specification for an automatic reading system and propose a possible implementation method. The proposed system performs the whole reading process automatically without any user intervention, covering image acquisition, image analysis, and report generation. We applied the system for the automatic report generation of a commercialized DNA chip for cervical cancer detection. The fluorescence image of the hybridization result was acquired with a $GenePix^{TM}$ scanner using its library running in HTML pages. The processing of the acquired image and the report generation were executed by a component object module programmed with Microsoft Visual C++ 6.0. To generate the report document, we made an HWP 2002 document template with marker strings that were supposed to be searched and replaced with the corresponding information such as patient information and diagnosis results. The proposed system generates the report document by reading the template and changing the marker strings with the resultant contents. The system is expected to facilitate the usage of a diagnostic DNA chip for mass screening by the automation of a conventional manual reading process, shortening its processing time, and quantifying the reading criteria.

Impact of Perceived Cancer Risk on the Cancer Screening Rate in the General Korean Population: Results from the Korean Health Panel Survey Data

  • Objective: To investigate the relationship between the perception of cancer risk and likelihood of having undergone cancer screening. Materials and Methods: We used data from the Korean Health Panel Survey from December 2011 onward. Of 3,390 patients who visited a hospital during the previous year, we included data from 2,466 individuals; 924 samples were excluded due to missing data. Logistic regression analysis and the chi square test were used to investigate the association between perceived cancer risk and the likelihood of having undergone cancer screening. Results: For patients who perceived their risk of developing cancer during the next 10 years to be 30-40%, the odds ratio was increased 1.65 fold (95%CI: 1.223, 2.234) compared with those who perceived their risk to be almost zero. Although the difference was not statistically significant, perceiving cancer risk as either extremely low or extremely high appears to be associated with a reduced likelihood of having undergone cancer screening, resulting in an inverted U-shaped relationship. Conclusions: Physicians and researchers should be aware of the importance of the affective component of risk perception. Policies addressing the influence of cancer risk perception should be implemented in South Korea and worldwide.

Defining the Nature of Online Chat in Relation to Speech and Writing

  • Style is considered a pivotal construct in sociolinguistic variation studies. While previous studies have examined style in traditional forms of language such as speech, very little research has examined new and emerging styles such as computer-mediated discourse. Thus, the present study attempts to investigate style in the online communication mode of chat. In so doing, the study compares text-based online chat with speech and writing. Online chat has been previously described as a hybrid form of language that is close to speech. Here, the exact nature of online chat is elucidated by focusing on contraction use. Differential acquisition of stylistic variation is also examined according to English learning background. The empirical component consists of data from Korean speakers of English. Data is taken from a written summary, an oral interview, and a text-based online chat session. A multivariate analysis was conducted. Results indicate that online chat is indeed a hybrid form that is difficult to delineate from speech and writing. Text-based online chat shows a somewhat similar rate of contraction to speech, which confirms its hybridity.. Lastly, some implications of the study are given in terms of the learning and acquisition of style in general and in online contextual modes.

  • The flow in a microchannel is usually characterized as a low Reynolds number (Re) so that good mixing is quite difficult to be achieved. In this regard, we developed a novel chaotic micromixer, named Barrier Embedded Kenics Micromixer (BEKM). In the BEKM, the higher level of chaotic mixing can be achieved by combining two general chaotic mixing mechanisms: (i) splitting/reorientation by helical elements inside the microchannel and (ii) stretching/folding via periodically located barriers on the channel wall. The fully three-dimensional geometry of BEKM was realized by a micro-stereolithography technology, in this study, along with a Kenics micromixer and a circular T-pipe. Mixing performances of three micromixers were experimentally characterized in terms of an average mixing color intensity of phenolphthalein. Experimental results show that BEKM has better mixing performance than other two micromixers. Chaotic mixing mechanism, proposed in this study, could be integrated as a mixing component with Micro-Total-Analysis-System, Lab-on-a-chip and so on.

  • Brain Korea(BK) 21 is a plan launched in 2000 to strengthen the competitiveness of research and education quality of universities in Korea. In this paper, we evaluate BK21 plan using both ACSI and SEM in terms of the satisfaction level of graduate students in various dimension. The results of our study indicate that in general BK21 has a significant impact on the satisfaction of the graduate students involved in BK21. It turns out that the scholarship is the only one component which is positively related to the students' satisfaction while the industry-university cooperation system and the international conference attendance and Journal publication have negative relationship with satisfaction. In addition, it appears that those who graduated from other college and participate in BK21 tend to be more satisfied than those who admitted to the graduate program from the same college. Our study results imply that some strategies for BK21 need to be modified and effectively implemented in order to increase the number of applicant of good quality and level up the satisfaction level of the graduate students in Korea.

  • Sparse coding or independent component analysis (ICA) which is a holistic representation, was successfully applied to elucidate early auditor${\gamma}$ processing and to the task of sound classification. In contrast, parts-based representation is an alternative way o) understanding object recognition in brain. In this thesis we employ the non-negative matrix factorization (NMF) which learns parts-based representation in the task of sound classification. Methods of feature extraction from the spectro-temporal sounds using the NMF in the absence or presence of noise, are explained. Experimental results show that NMF-based features improve the performance of sound classification over ICA-based features.

Design of Hot Heading Process and Evaluation of Mechanical Properties of Alloy718 Coupling Bolt for Gas Turbine (가스터빈용 Alloy718 커플링볼트의 열간 헤딩 공정설계 및 기계적 특성 평가)

  • Alloy718 is the nickel-base super alloy well used as gas turbine components under severe operating conditions because of its high strength at high temperature and excellent creep resistance. In this study, a coupling bolt for the gas turbine component is manufactured by hot heading process instead of whole machining in order to improve the mechanical properties. Die shape for the hot heading has been designed by general design rule of hot forging and also optimal process condition has been investigated by finite element method. The initial billet temperature and the punch speed have been determined by $1150^{\circ}C$ and 600mm/s on the basis of finite element analysis, respectively. The coupling bolt has been manufactured by 200ton screw press and evaluated by experiment in order to investigate the mechanical properties. As a result of experiment, the mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength and creep behavior have been superior to those manufactured by machining.
