David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly: Postmodern Other, (Post-)Imperialist Melancholy and Western Masculinity in Crisis (포스트모던 제국의 우울증-데이빗 헨리 황의 『엠. 버터플라이』)

  • This article discusses David Henry Hwang's M. Butterfly as a suggestive text for examining Western masculinity in crisis in the post-imperialist age, in which territorial imperialism is no longer valid. Previous scholarship on M. Butterfly has centered around the interlocking dynamics of imperialism, racism and sexism. Such critical attentions focus on how Hwang deconstructs racialized significations of the East and the West. In these discussions, the issue of gender is often addressed merely as a trope to represent the power relations between the East and the West. As such, gender as well as sexuality is highlighted as the very source of subversion of the power relations. My discussion departs from a critique of the gendered trope of the East and the West, highlighting a postmodern agent, the allegedly feminized character Song Lining: a Chinese actor who passes for a woman for political purposes in postcolonial China. Remaining an "inappropriate/d other" in the gendered imperialist discourse, Song becomes an emergent subject, who is capable of playing gender ambiguity for reclaiming a devalued identity, that of homosexual Asian man. Discussing how the central character Rene Gallimard's masculine identity is constructed in a cross-cultural space and how it evolves, I also argue that Gallimard's melancholic death signifies a historical unsustainability of imperialist masculinity in the postmodern/postcolonial age since World War II.

Male Gender Role and Adjustment of Korean Men (남성 성역할이 우리나라 남성들의 적응에 미치는 영향)

  • The goal of this study was to examine the effects of male gender role on the adjustment of Korean men. In study 1 Korean Male gender Role Scale was developed. A 52-item scale was constructed based on the responses of 432 college-aged and middle-aged men to theoretically-derived preliminary items. Five factors were extracted: achievement orientation, the initiative, task orientation, responsibility for family and friendship with male friends. Study 2 examined the relationship between male gender role and several adjustment variables. Correlational analyses indicated that in the college men self-esteem and career identity were positively correlated with the initiative and friendship with male friends was positively correlated with life satisfaction. College men's depression level was negatively correlated with the initiative and task orientation. Among the middle-aged men, self-esteem was also positively correlated with the initiative and task orientation. But responsibility for family was positively correlated with depression and job dissatisfaction in the middle-aged men. In both groups satisfaction with male gender role was positively correlated with self-esteem and life satisfaction but negatively correlated with depression. Finally, limitations of this study and direction of future research were discussed.

Analysis of Korean Gamers' Personality Patterns with respect to the Victim/Attacker of the Misogyny and the Misandry in Game Playing (게임 내 이성 혐오 가해자와 피해자의 성격 패턴 분석)

  • As female gamers are rapidly increasing, the misogyny and the misandry in game playing situation are also increasing. Recent #Gamergate and GodGunbae incident exhibit that such discriminative/hate behaviour in game playing can be developed into real physical threat or crime. In this paper, we investigate and analyze young Korean game players on how the attackers group, victims group, and gender-issue-indifferent group behave differently in game playing through survey. We found that male gamers had high hostile sexism against female gamers especially on females' game attitude and streotyped hatred with respect to the gender ${\times}$ group interaction. In big-5 personality test, however, it is not clear if attackers and victims had a noticeable different personality patterns. In result, we verify that there exist gender stereotype and high hostile sexism among young Korean gamers. Active gender-equality education on their adolescent period is necessary to avoid such destructive hatred in game playing.

Differences in Driver Anger as a Function of Gender, Driving Experience, and Actor-Observer Perspective: A Driving Simulation Study (성별과 운전경력에 따른 행위자-관찰자 관점에서의 운전분노 차이: 운전 시뮬레이션 연구)

  • This driving simulation study examined relative differences in driving anger as the functions of drivers' gender and driving experiences, and actor-observer perspectives when they were exposed in two anger-provoking driving scenarios(cutting-in and sudden stop). The results showed the followings. First, neither drivers' gender nor driving experience, when they were considered independently of the driving situation types and actor-observer perspectives, yielded significant difference in driving anger. Second, actor-observer effect on driving anger was observed only in the cutting-in condition where other driver's intension was emphasized. Third, the female drivers of low driving experience tended to show the strongest tendency of actor-observer bias in the cutting-in condition. These results suggested that the levels of driving anger as the functions of drivers' gender and driving experience can be differed by types of driving situation as well as perspectives of drivers' interpreting the situations.

Parental, Occupational Role Reconstruction and Psychological Well-being among Middle and Old Aged Japanese Married Men and Women (중·노년기 부모 및 직업역할 재구조화와 심리적 안녕감: 일본 기혼남녀를 중심으로)

  • The purposes of this study were: (a) to examine the relationship between parental/occupational role reconstruction and psychological well-being in middle and old age, (b) to investigate the psychological factors to affect parental/occupational roles reconstruction. The role reconstruction was measured as the extent to obsess with parental and occupational role in transition. Mail survey was conducted on 378 Japanese married men and women in ages between 50 and 69. As results, the hypothetical pathway was identified in women as follows. The obsession with parental and occupational roles raised parental and occupational role loss anxiety. And both of role loss anxiety lower psychological well-being. For men, obsessed with the occupational role was significantly influenced by autonomy, gender role attitude, social support network. For women, gender role attitude significantly influenced on occupational and parental role obsession, and social support networks had significant impact on parental role obsession. Results of this study were discussed in terms of the importance of role reconstruction in middle and old age, gender difference in role reconstruction according to gender role socialization.

A Research on Gender-role Identity, Gender Discriminative Consciousness and Attitudes toward Military Service of Korean College Students (한국 대학생의 성역할정체감과 성차별의식 및 군대에 대한 태도에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this research is to analyze male oriented military culture and gender discrimination. It examined whether the experience of military service would affect the attitude of Korean college students, gender role identity, and sexism by classifying 317 college students into three groups; males who have completed military service, males who haven't completed military service, and a female group. Research results are as follows: First, in general military experience did not enhance awareness of gender identity nor affect attitudes toward gender discrimination, but significantly enhanced masculinity in some males who completed military service was a major factor in strengthening masculinity and benevolent sexism. Second, males who completed military service and women had a more positive view of the military than males who had yet to serve in the military. Third, regardless of military experience and gender, military experience was perceived to enhance benevolent sexism towards women. Fourth, all three groups showed a strikingly positive correlation in hostile sexism and benevolent sexism. However, they did not show a significant difference in the correlation of groups. Tough these results indicate that deep-rooted gender discrimination in Korean society is enhanced by military experience, it also confirms the significance and impact of the reality of the military ideology.

  • 'gender' means sex in a social sense and 'sex'is more close to the concept of that discussed in biological light. 'Gender is more adequate word in expressing gender equality of both sexes than 'sex'that gives us discriminating impression and implies tout we should actualize equality between both sexes in all field of social activities. Though more and more women have been advanced into the job that was once regarded as a men only-area and the concrete list of iou for men and women has been changed in the process of job structure transition, women stiff take full charge of all kind of houseworks so they're still under the double torture of housework and their job. Most of the job in which men used to engaged in the past is now mechanized. and we can't deny that modern technology triggered women's participation in public affairs by helping them to lead comfortable family life without any assistant or trustee for housework. Under these trend of our times, we made an attempt to look into design mainly from the standpoint of women by raising the issue of correlation between women's labor in society and houseworks in the hope that current design and changes into one that can rejects women's position and allows them independent choice in the field involved with our real life.

Mediating Effects of Rejection Sensitivity on the Effects of Pathological Narcissism on Dating Violence: Focusing on Gender Difference (성인 남녀의 병리적 자기애가 데이트폭력 가해에 미치는 영향에서 거부민감성의 매개효과: 성차를 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the mediating effects of rejection sensitivity in pathological narcissism and dating violence, and to verify whether there is a gender difference in each variable, further examining the gender difference in the mediating pathways. The participants of this study were 381 men and women in 20s living across the country, and online self-report surveys was conducted regarding their experiences of pathological narcissism, rejection sensitivity, and four types of dating violence. As a result of verifying gender differences, it was found that women had a higher vulnerability to narcissism, rejection sensitivity and committed more psychological violence, sexual violence, and controlling behavior than men. As a result of the mediation analysis, it was found that rejection sensitivity partial mediated the effect of pathological narcissism on psychological violence and control behavior, but it showed a complete mediation effect on sexual violence. And there was no mediating effect of rejection sensitivity between pathological narcissism and physical violence. As a result of measuring the moderating effect of gender in this mediating pathways, the moderated mediating effect of gender was verified in the effect of naricissistic grandiosity and narcissistic vulnerability on control behavior through rejection sensitivity. These results show that pathological narcissism promotes psychological and sexual violence in both men and women, and rejection sensitivity acts as a mediator in this process. In addition, the effect of pathological narcissism on the control behaviors through rejection sensitivity was significantly higher in women than in men, indicating that there are gender differences in the mediated pathways. Finally, the implications and limitations of this study and suggestions for follow-up studies were discussed.

The effectiveness, gender identity, satisfaction of life of female leaders in Government, and the organizational culture regarding gender equality (여성 공무원 리더의 효율성, 성 정체성, 삶의 만족도와 조직의 성차별 문화)

  • This survey research examined the effectiveness, gender identity and the satisfaction of life of female leaders in government, in relation to the organizational culture regarding gender discrimination. The respondents were high -ranking (above 5th grade) male (N=154) and female (N=150) leaders in government and the supervisors (N= 139) of the female leaders. The results demonstrated that the effectiveness of female leaders was rated lower as she helped her junior females at work more as a mentor, while she was rated as being more effective as her leadership style became more relationship-oriented. The satisfaction of life of female leaders was higher as she engaged more in mentoring to the junior females and as she had more positive gender identity. However, life satisfaction became lower as the organizational culture became more discriminating toward females. The discriminating organizational culture was also correlated negatively with the interpersonal relationship between females(especially the relationship with the female seniors). These results are indicating that the behaviors, the effectiveness ratings and the satisfaction of life of female leaders in Government are restricted by the gender -discriminating organizational culture and the cultural stereotypes of the members in the organization.

The Structural Relationship among Personal Belief in a Just World, Presence of Meaning in Life, Self-Control, and Aggression in College Students: Multigroup Analysis across Gender (대학생의 개인적 공정세상신념, 삶의 의미 발견, 자기통제력, 공격성의 구조적 관계: 성별 간 다집단 분석)

  • This study examined the structural relationship among personal belief in a just world, presence of meaning in life, self-control, and aggression in college students. For this research, self-reported data from 427 college students were analyzed by gender, using structural equation modeling. Results indicated that personal belief in a just world predicted aggression regardless of gender. The mediating effect of self-control was non-significant among both women and men groups. The mediating effect of presence of meaning in life and self-control was significant among only women. It means that personal belief in a just world predicted presence of meaning in life and self-control, which consequently contributed to aggression among women. It is noteworthy that this study examined the concrete mechanism to reduce aggression by gender. Based on these findings, intervention strategies were discussed.
