GPAR{elidium (G.) amansii is a red alga widely distributed in the shallow waters around East Asian countries. We investigated the effect of G. amansii on lipid accumulation and ROS (Reactive Oxygen Species) production in 3T3-L1 cells. G. amansii extracts dose-dependently inhibited lipid formation and ROS generation in cultured cells. Our results showed that anti-adipogenic effect of G. amansii was due to the reduction in mRNA expressions of PPAR${\gamma}$(peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-${\gamma}$) and aP2 (adipocyte protein 2). G. amansii extracts significantly decreased mRNA levels of a ROS-generator, NOX4 (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate hydrogen oxidase 4), and increased the protein levels of antioxidant enzymes including SOD1/2 (superoxide dismutases), Gpx (glutathione peroxidase), and GR (glutathione reductase), which can lead to the reduction of ROS in the cell. In addition, the G. amansii extract enhanced mRNA levels of adiponectin, one of the adipokines secreted from adipocytes, and GLUT4, glucose uptake protein. Taken together, our study shows that G. amansii extract inhibited lipid accumulation and ROS production by controlling adipogenic signals and ROS regulating genes.
The methanol extracts of some marine algae were tested for investigating the effects on the formation of lipid peroxide and the activities of free radical generating enzyme in vitro in bromobenzene-treated rat. The extracts of Enteromorpha compressa, Capsosiphon fulvescens, Gelidium amansii, Hizikia fusiformis, Sargassum siliquastrum and Sargassum thunbergii which decreased the formation of lipid peroxide, inhibited the activity of xanthine and aldehyde oxidases by adding of each extracts. Phloroglucinol isolated from Ecklonia stolonifera reduced bromobenzene-induced hepatic lipid peroxidation. This compound administered daily over one week before intoxication with bromobenzene did not affect the activities of aminopyrine N-demethylase, aniline hydroxylase and glu tathione S-transferase. Epoxide hydrolase activity was decreased by bromobenzene, which was restored by pretreatment of phloroglucinol, The results suggest that the bromobenzene-induced hepatic lipid peroxidation by phloroglucinol is reduced by enhancing the activity of epoxide hydrolase.
Gracilaria verrucosa and Gelidium amansii collected from Wando, Yeosoo and Namhae districts Gracilaria sp. imported from Manila, and Ecklonia cava from Cheju island were investigated to raise the extraction yield of agar or alginic acid. The results are summarized as follows. In agar extraction from domestic seaweeds, Gelidium sp. showed 8-10% yield increase by gamma-irradiation whereas Gracilaria sp. exhibited no effect. In Manila seaweed, gamma-irradiation (1.5 Mrad) caused 25-30% increase in agar extraction and the properties of agar sample by these methods were acceptable. In alginic acid extraction from Ecklonia sp., gamma-irradiation (0.3 Mrad) showed 6% yield increase.
In this study, a biodegradable packaging film was developed using two marine algae, Gelidium amansii, and Sargassum horneri. The chemical properties and microstructure of the developed film were evaluated using field emission scanning electron microscope, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, gas chromatography-Mass spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. Furthermore, the mechanical properties and toxicity of the film were evaluated using the ISO 1924 and IEC 62321 methods, respectively. The biodegradability of the film was evaluated according to ISO 14855-1:2012 method. The film was primarily made of cellulose and had biodegradability that was about 17 times greater than that of PBS, a representative eco-friendly plastic. Moreover, the mechanical properties improved by approximately 40% compared to the seaweed-based film of the previous study. The virulence test revealed that the content of all of the toxic substances listed in IEC62321 was below the measurement limit. An egg carton that can be used in practice was manufactured in accordance with ISO 534, and its applicability was tested using the biodegradable packaging film prepared.

The species composition and distributional patterns in marine benthic algae at intertidal zone in Masan Bay were investigated seasonally throughout 2007. A total of 42 species, 5 Chlorophyta 8 Phaeophyta and 29 Rhodophyta were recorded, and dominant species were Enteromorpha linza, Ulva pertusa, Sargassum thunbergii, Gelidium amansii, G. divaricatum, Corallina pilulifera, Gracilaria textorii, and Polysiphonia morrowii during study periods. Especially the vertical distribution of dominant algal species was remarkable: U. pertusa and G. divaricatum were dominated in the upper part, E. intestinalis, E. linza, S. thunbergii and G. divaricatum were in the middle part, and U. pertusa, Undaria pinnatiffda, S. thunbergii, G. amansii, G. divaricatum and C. pilulifera mainly occurred in the low part of tidal zone. The numbers of species were different with seasons and stations; Higher number of species was 38 species in winter, whereas 28 species were the lowest in fall. The number of species was higher at stations 4 and 6 Mile the lower value was at stations 1 and 2 than other stations. The spatial distributional patterns of marine benthic algal composition at each station in dendrogram and MDS ordination were due to the differences of local topography and physical characteristics such as currents and water movements.
Benthic marine algae of Shinjido located on the southern coast of Korea have been investigated to know the floristic composition and community structure. The study was conducted from the intertidal to subtidal zones at two different locations (Kangdok and Donggori) using a line transect method from January to October, 1994. A total of 120 species of marine algae were identified, and they includes 15 green algae, 31 brown algae and 74 red algae. Of these, 87 and 104 species of marine algae occurred at Kangdok and Donggori, respectively. Algal vegetations were divided into three different zonations: the upper, the middle and the lower zones. The representative species are Enteromorpha compressa, Ulva pertusa, Porphyra suborbiculata, lshige okamurae in the upper zone; Hizikia fusiformis, Sargassum thunbergii, Gigatina intermedia, Corallina pilulifera in the middle zone; Pachymeniopsis elliptica, Gelidium amansii, Sargassum horneri in the lower zone. In terms of biomass the dominant species were U. pertusa, I. okamurae, H. fusiformis, C. thunbergii, C. pilulifera, C. amansii, C. tenella. The flora could be classified into six functional form groups such as the coarsely branched form $(36.7\%)$ the filamentous form $(27.5\%)$, the sheet form $(15.8\%)$, the thick leathery form $(10.0\%)$, the jointed calcarious form $(5.0\%)$ and the crustose form $(5.0\%)$.
Using the eight-year-working diaries($1984{\sim}1991$) of the fishing co-operative in Tonggui-ri, Cheju-do, as well as the records of consignment sale in the fish trust market as the corporate body in Aewol-up, the results have been analyzed as follows. 1. The monthly catch of Turbo cornutus was high from September through December, representing $58.2\%$ of the annual total catches. The maximum sustained yield(MSY) of this stock was estimated to be 2.5 tons. 2. The maximum sustained yields of Haliotis spp. and Sulculus sp. were estimated to be 800kg and 750kg, respectively. 3. The maximum sustained yields of Stichopus sp. and Octopus sp. were 500kg and 2, 500kg, respectively. 4. The total yield of Hizikia fusiforme has been decreasing a little and that of Gelidium sp. has been increasing. The total yield of Gelidium sp. in 1984 was about 5 times greater than that in 1990. 5. The daily catchability by divers have been high at thirties, and the individual mean working day of divers was 101 per year. 6. The consignment sale rates were $100\%$ each for Turbo cornutus, Hiziki fusiforme and Gelidium sp., $25.5\%$ and $61.1\%$ for Haliotis sp. and Stichopus sp. respectively, and $0\%$ each for Sulculus sp. and Octopus sp.

Objective: Gelidium amansii (Lamouroux) is a red alga belonging to the family Gelidaceae and is commonly found in the shallow coasts of many East Asian countries, including Korea, China, and Japan. G. amansii has traditionally been utilized as an edible alga, and has various biological activities. The objective of this study was to determine whether dietary supplementation of G. amansii could be useful for improving ruminal fermentation. Methods: As assessed by in vitro fermentation parameters such as pH, total gas, volatile fatty acid (VFA) production, gas profile (methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and ammonia), and microbial growth rate was compared to a basal diet with timothy hay. Cannulated Holstein cows were used as rumen fluid donors and 15 mL rumen fluid: buffer (1:2) was incubated for up to 72 h with four treatments with three replicates. The treatments were: control (timothy only), basal diet with 1% G. amansii extract, basal diet with 3% G. amansii extract, and basal diet with 5% G. amansii extract. Results: Overall, the results of our study indicate that G. amansii supplementation is potentially useful for improving ruminant growth performance, via increased total gas and VFA production, but does come with some undesirable effects, such as increasing pH, ammonia concentration, and methane production. In particular, real-time polymerase chain reaction indicated that the methanogenic archaea and Fibrobacter succinogenes populations were significantly reduced, while the Ruminococcus flavefaciens populations were significantly increased at 24 h, when supplemented with G. amansii extracts as compared with controls. Conclusion: More research is required to elucidate what G. amansii supplementation can do to improve growth performance, and its effect on methane production in ruminants.
Currently, there are very few studies on Korean wall paintings. Therefore, this study discusses the current conditions of wooden paintings and the characteristics of the adhesive agent in the painting layer separation. Korean land pine was chosen as the support, while white oysters shells, orpiment, red ocher, Noerok, and azurite were used as pigments. With four adhesive agents, including animal glue, Gelidium, methyl cellulose, and PVAc (caparol binder), a comparative experiment was conducted, by dividing them into two concentrations, of 0.5% and 1.5%. The temperature, humidity, and ultraviolet rays, which are contributing environmental factors in cultural assets after fixing, were artificially investigated. After deterioration, observed color difference, fixing, and the surface. Results showed that the animal glue strongly fixing all the colored layers compared to the other adhesives; however, azurite had a partial change when used outdoors. With Gelidium, which functioned similar to animal glue, the azurite was affected by the ultraviolet rays; nevertheless, despite the variations in temperature and humidity, it had the best gripping force compared to the other adhesive agents. Methyl cellulose was glossy at a high concentration, and was relatively strong against rapid changes in temperature and humidity. PVAc significantly reduced the binding force, compared to other adhesive agents.
Bio-ethanol production research using various material has been problemed for solving problems of environment pollution caused by fossil fuels. Red-algae consists of agar, carrageenan, and porphyran. If it is treated by acid, it is able to change useful bio-mass for bio-ethanol. In this study, we found an optimal condition for bio-ethanol production from acid hydrolysate in red-algae. To produce bio-ethanol, Saccharomyces cerevisiae KCCM1129 inoculated to acid hydrolysate of Gelidium amansii. The optimal condition for Gelidium amansii hydrolysis was found to be 30 min reaction at $H_2SO_4$ concentration of 1.5% and $121^{\circ}C$. At this condition, its produced to 7.04 g/L galactose and 1.94 g/L glucose. And acetic acid concentration of 2.0% in agar produced 0.75 g/L galactose. In contrast, Pachymeniopis elliptica was treated with $H_2SO_4$concentration of 1.5%, it produced 6.38 g/L galactose. And Pachymeniopis elliptica treated with acetic acid concentration of 2% produced 0.368 g/L galactose. The optimal condition of ethanol production was found to be 96 h reaction at $H_2SO_4$concentration of 1.0% and $30^{\circ}C$, which produced 3.77 g/L ethanol.
