Orientation Control and Dielectric Properties of Sol-gel Deposited (Ba,Sr)TiO3 Thin Films for Room-temperature Tunable Element Applications

  • The effects of the mole concentrations of precursor solution on the microstructure and dielectric properties of sol-gel deposited $Ba_{0.85}$S $r_{0.15}$Ti $O_3$(BST) thin films have been investigated. The films were of single perovskite phase with strong (100) preferred orientation when grown on LaNi0$_3$ buffered Pt/Ti/ $SiO_2$Si substrates using a diluted precursor solution. Variation of the precursor solution concentration resulted in a different microstructure and, in turn, affected the tunability of the sol-gel deposited films. It was observed that leakage currents increased asymmetrically for the negative and positive bias voltage with decreasing thickness. Overall results suggest that those BST films have acceptable properties f3r applications as room-temperature tunable elements.

Optical Properties of Lead Zirconate Thin Films by Sol-gel Method (SoI-gel법으로 제작된 lead zirconate 박막의 광학적 특성)

  • We investigated the optical properties of lead zirconate($PbZrO_3$, PZ) thin films. The PZ films for the measurement of optical properties were prepared on ITO glass by sol-gel method. By post annealing, with annealing temperature $T=700^{\circ}C$, the pyrochlore phase of as-deposited specimen was transformed into the perovskite phase. The surface of films were plat, transmittance were from 60 to 80% at 480~2000nm, and refractive index were from 2.1 to 1.9 at 480~1000nm.

Interrelation between Physicochemical Properties of Milled Rice and Retrogradation of Rice Bread during COld Storage (쌀의 이화학적 특성과 저장 쌀빵의 노화성과의 관계)

  • The interrelation between physicochemical properties of milled rice and retrogradation of rice bread during cold storage was examined to compare the varietal difference in maintenance of rice bread quality. Twelve rice materials showed big varietal difference on physicochemical properties of rice starch such as amylose content(0.0~29.2%), gel consistency(20~98mm), and alkali digestion value(2.0~7.0). Rice bread made from milled rice of Jungwonbyeo, AC 27 and IRAT 177 exhibited soft texture and late retrogradation of rice bread during cold storage(4$^{\circ}C$). The amylose content of milled rice was closely associated with gel consistency negatively and with springiness of rice bread positively. The retrogradation of rice bread texture during cold storage was correlated with gel consistency of rice flour positively and with alkali digestion value of milled rice negatively.

  • In this paper, $TiO_2$ thin films were fabricated by Sol-Gel method and their electrical conductivity and humidity sensing properties have been investigated. The structure of Sol can be changed by controlling for hydrolysis condition. The uniform surface of thin films was confirmed by SEM. The electrical conductivity of thin films decreased with increasing heat treatment temperature. The humidity sensing properties of thin films were good in high humidity and low frequency regions.

  • $Mg_4Nb_2O_9$ (MN) ceramics have been prepared by a sol-gel method. The powder characteristics, phase evolution, and microwave dielectric properties of the MN were investigated in various processing conditions such as sol-gel compositions, calcination, and sintering temperatures. A Qxfo value of 111,717 GHz with a ${\varepsilon}_r$ of 10.59 and a ${\tau}_f$ of $+1.736\;ppm/^{\circ}C$ was obtained after sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 5 h.

  • [ $TiO_2-Nb_2O_5$ ] sol was prepared using sol-gel method. Crystalline properties of gel powder changed from rutile phase to anatase phase with increasing $Nb_2O_5$ additives at $800^{\circ}C$, while they retained rutile phase regardless of $Nb_2O_5$ additives at $900^{\circ}C,\;1,000^{\circ}C$. They retained amorphous phase from $50^{\circ}C\;to\;400^{\circ}C$, retained anatase phase from $500^{\circ}C\;to\;600^{\circ}C$ and had rutile phase over $700^{\circ}C$ at 1mole% $Nb_2O_5$ additive. After $TiO_2-Nb_2O_5$ sol retained low viscosity with normal chain structure for a long time, its viscosity increased fast with network structure. DTA properties of gel powder had endothermic reaction due to evaporation of propanol and water about $78^{\circ}C$, had exothermic reaction due to propanol combustion about $290^{\circ}C$ and had exothermic reaction due to changing of $TiO_2$ phase about $640^{\circ}C$.

Soft polymeric materials near the transition from liquid to solid state

  • Soft polymeric materials have gained importance in recent years, namely in food, pharmaceuticals, photographic media, adhesives, vibration dampeners and superabsorbers (to name a few), but also as inter-mediates for selforganization of molecules or supramolecules into long range order. Many of these soft materials are close to their gel point, i.e. they are liquids just before reaching their gel point or they are solids which have barely passed the gel point. New rheological methods need to be developed for the understanding of these soft materials; the typical liquid properties (viscosity) and typical solid properties (modulus) are not applicable since they diverge at the gel point. This will be discussed in the following. Fortunately, chemical gelation experiments with model polymers has given insight into the behavior at the gel point (Winter and Mours, 1997). This knowledge of the critical gel provides us with a reference state when working with soft polymeric materials. Chemical gels will serve as model materials for the exploration of physical gels. A novel method for detecting the gel point has been proposed: the instant of liquid-to-solid transition(gel point) is marked by the crossover of the normalized dynamic moduli G'/cos($n_c$$\pi$/2) and G"/sin($n_c$$\pi$/2).>/2).

Effects of Ultrasonic Irradiation on Physical Properties of Silica/PEG Hybrids

  • The effect of ultrasonic radiation is reported for silica-poly(ethylene glycol) system prepared without the solvent using sol-gel processing by varying various parameters such as ultrasonic irradiation time, PEG content and HCl/TEOS molar ratio. The property of sonogel is compared with classic gel which has been prepared with ethanol as a solvent by traditional sol-gel processing. SEM, BET, DTA-TGA, density and Vickers hardness measurements are carried out for analyzing the samples. The gelation time is found strongly dependent on radiation time, PEG content and pH value, and has been discussed on the basis of existing theories. The $SiO_2-10$ & 20 wt% PEG sonogel exhibited superior optical, physical and gel properties as compared to the classic gel, hence, found suitable for device applications. The ultrasonic radiation increased the density and surface area, and also reduced the pore size which is well supported by the shift in the peak of DTA curve. The DTA thermogram was found similar to that of pure silica gel.

Synthesis of Silica Aerogel at Ambient Pressure and Characterization (II) (실리카 에어로겔의 상압합성 및 특성연구(II))

  • Low-density silica gel monolith was synthesized at ambient pressure by surface modification with TMCS and sub-sequent heat treatment. The mechanical thermal and optical properties of gel were studied. Compressive strength and modulus of compression of 350$^{\circ}C$-heated gel with the density of 0.24g/cm3 were 250kPa and 0.2MPa respectively. The thermal conductivity of silica gels synthesized at ambient pressure exhibited 0.02 W/m$.$K for the density of 0.24g/cm3 which is similar to that of the gel via supercritical drying and their main thermal transfer mechanism is considered to be solid and radiation conduction at room temperature. Ambient-dried silica gels were transparent blue showing about 60% of transmittance in the wavelength of 1500-2100nm and typical absorption bands of existing bonds under heat treatment at 350$^{\circ}C$. Medium scale monolity(${\Phi}$=50mm) at ambient pressure could be successfully prepared through total 5-month process period.

Properties of Gel-like Compounds Containing Flammable Solvents (Gel형 인화성 용제 Compound의 특성)

  • Gel-like compounds containing flammable solvents were prepared to use fur cleaning agents in field of innovative industries and general purposes. And experiments were conducted to improve the defects of liquified flammable solvents from the view point of safety and health hazards. Flammable solvents used in this study were several single component flammable solvents(turpentine oil, N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP), d-limonene) and multi component flammable solvent(gasoline and ethanol). For gelation of flammable solvents, commercially Known as Aerosil(equation omitted) 200 fumed silica and triethanolamine(TEA) were used as gelation agent dispersant. The analyses on properties of gel-like compounds was studied by gelation and viscosity test pH test, volatility test and differential scanning calorimetry(DSC) measurement. The experimental results indicate that gel-like compounds containing flammable solvents have pH stability, high viscosity, volatile organic compounds(VOC) control by the decrease of volatility and odor component generation, fluidity control etc. From the experimental values, it can be predicted that the safety in the working place is improved by manufacturing flammable solvents into gel-like compounds.
