  • In this paper, we propose a novel method for the cross-correlation based double-talk detection (DTD), which employing the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) in the frequency domain. The proposed algorithm transforms the cross correlation coefficient used in the time domain into 16 channels in the frequency domain using the discrete fourier transform (DFT). The channels are then selected into seven feature vectors for GMM and we identify three different regions such as far-end, double-talk and near-end speech using the likelihood comparison based on those feature vectors. The presented DTD algorithm detects efficiently the double-talk regions without Voice Activity Detector which has been used in conventional cross correlation based double-talk detection. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated under various conditions and yields better results compared with the conventional schemes. especially, show the robustness against detection errors resulting from the background noises or echo path change which one of the key issues in practical DTD.

  • For the analysis of multiunit extracellular neural signals as multiple spike trains, neural spike sorting is essential. Existing algorithms for the spike sorting have been unsatisfactory when the signal-to-noise ratio(SNR) is low, especially for implementation of fully-automated systems. We present a novel method that shows satisfactory performance even under low SNR, and compare its performance with a recent method based on principal component analysis(PCA) and fuzzy c-means(FCM) clustering algorithm. Our system consists of a spike detector that shows high performance under low SNR, a feature extractor that utilizes projection pursuit based on negentropy maximization, and an unsupervised classifier based on Gaussian mixture model. It is shown that the proposed feature extractor gives better performance compared to the PCA, and the proposed combination of spike detector, feature extraction, and unsupervised classification yields much better performance than the PCA-FCM, in that the realization of fully-automated unsupervised spike sorting becomes more feasible.

  • In this paper, we apply a context awareness based on Gaussian mixture model (GMM) to a sound reinforcement for hearing impaired. In our approach, the harmful sound amplified through the sound reinforcement algorithm according to context awareness based on GMM which is constructed as Mel-frequency cepstral coefficients (MFCC) feature vector from sound data. According to the experimental results, the proposed approach is found to be effective in the various acoustic environments.

  • We propose an effective voice-pishing detection algorithm based on the 3GPP2 selectable mode vocoder (SMV). The detection of voice pishing is performed based on a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) using decoding parameters of the SMV directly extracted from the decoding process of the transmitted speech information in the mobile phone. The experimental results indicate that SMV decoding parameters are effective in discriminating between general voice and phisher's voice and the performance is significantly acceptable when the proposed technique is applied.

  • In this paper, we propose the gaussian mixture model based pattern classification algorithm of forearm electromyogram. We define the motion of 1-degree of freedom as holding and unfolding hand considering a daily life for patient with prosthetic hand. For the extraction of precise features from the EMG signals, we use the difference absolute mean value(DAMV) and the mean absolute value(MAV) to consider amplitude characteristic of EMG signals. We also propose the D_DAMV and D_MAV in order to classify the amplitude characteristic of EMG signals more precisely. In this paper, we implemented a test targeting four adult male and identified the accuracy of EMG pattern classification of two motions which are holding and unfolding hand.

  • In this paper, we propose a neuro-fuzzy modeling to improve the performance using the hierarchical clustering and Gaussian Mixture Model(GMM). The hierarchical clustering algorithm has a property of producing unique parameters for the given data because it does not use the object function to perform the clustering. After optimizing the obtained parameters using the GMM, we apply them as initial parameters for Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System. Here, the number of fuzzy rules becomes to the cluster numbers. From this, we can improve the performance index and reduce the number of rules simultaneously. The proposed method is verified by applying to a neuro-fuzzy modeling for Box-Jenkins s gas furnace data and Sugeno's nonlinear system, which yields better results than previous oiles.

  • Images are unavoidably contaminated with different types of noise during the processes of image acquisition and transmission. The main forms of noise are impulse noise (is also called salt and pepper noise) and Gaussian noise. In this paper, an effective method of removing mixed noise from images is proposed. In general, different types of denoising methods are designed for different types of noise; for example, the median filter displays good performance in removing impulse noise, and the wavelet denoising algorithm displays good performance in removing Gaussian noise. However, images are affected by more than one type of noise in many cases. To reduce both impulse noise and Gaussian noise, this paper proposes a denoising method that combines adaptive median filtering (AMF) based on impulse noise detection with the wavelet threshold denoising method based on a Gaussian mixture model (GMM). The simulation results show that the proposed method achieves much better denoising performance than the median filter or the wavelet denoising method for images contaminated with mixed noise.

  • Vision-based navigation of unmaned aerial vehicle is a significant technology that can reinforce the vulnerability of the widely used GPS/INS integrated navigation system. However, the existing image matching algorithms are not suitable for matching the aerial image with the database. For the reason, this paper proposes particle filters using Gaussian mixture models to deal with matching between aerial image and database for vision-based navigation. The particle filters estimate the position of the aircraft by comparing the correspondences of aerial image and database under the assumption of Gaussian mixture model. Finally, Monte Carlo simulation is presented to demonstrate performance of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we proposed the feature selection algorithm for multi-class genre classification. In our proposed algorithm, we developed GMM separation score based on Gaussian mixture model for measuring separability between two genres. Additionally, we improved feature subset selection algorithm based on sequential forward selection for multi-class genre classification. Instead of setting criterion as entire genre separability measures, we set criterion as worst genre separability measure for each sequential selection step. In order to assess the performance proposed algorithm, we extracted various features which represent characteristics such as timbre, rhythm, pitch and so on. Then, we investigate classification performance by GMM classifier and k-NN classifier for selected features using conventional algorithm and proposed algorithm. Proposed algorithm showed improved performance in classification accuracy up to 10 percent for classification experiments of low dimension feature vector especially.

  • Due to the additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN), images are often corrupted. In recent days, Bayesian estimation techniques to recover noisy images in the wavelet domain have been studied. The probability density function (PDF) of an image in wavelet domain can be described using highly-sharp head and long-tailed shapes. If a priori probability density function having the above properties would be applied well adaptively, better results could be obtained. There were some frequently proposed PDFs such as Gaussian, Laplace distributions, and so on. These functions model the wavelet coefficients satisfactorily and have its own of characteristics. In this paper, mixture distributions of Gaussian and Laplace distribution are proposed, which attempt to corporate these distributions' merits. Such mixture model will be used to remove the noise in images by adopting Maximum a Posteriori (MAP) estimation method. With respect to visual quality, numerical performance and computational complexity, the proposed technique gained better results.
