This paper considers the ability of counting and positioning multi-targets by using a mobile UWB radar device. After a background subtraction process, distinguishing between clutters and human body signals, the position of targets will be computed using weighted Gaussian mixture methods. While computer vision offers many advantages, it has limited performance in poor visibility conditions (e.g., at night, haze, fog or smoke). UWB radar can provide a complementary technology for detecting and tracking humans, particularly in poor visibility or through-wall conditions. As we know, for 2D measurement, one method is the use of at least two receiver antennas. Another method is the use of one mobile radar receiver. This paper tried to investigate the position detection of the stationary human body using the movement of one UWB radar module.

Transient signals generally have short duration and variable length with time-varying and non-stationary characteristics. Thus frame-based pattern matching method is useful for classification of transient signals. In this paper, we propose a new method for classification of underwater transient signals using a Gaussian mixture model(GMM). We carried out classification experiments for various underwater transient signals depending upon the types of noise, signal-to-noise ratio, and number of mixtures in the GMM. Experimental results have verified that the proposed method works quite well for classification of underwater transient signals.
This paper proposes an efficient global covariance-based principal component analysis (GCPCA) for speaker identification. Principal component analysis (PCA) is a feature extraction method which reduces the dimension of the feature vectors and the correlation among the feature vectors by projecting the original feature space into a small subspace through a transformation. However, it requires a larger amount of training data when performing PCA to find the eigenvalue and eigenvector matrix using the full covariance matrix by each speaker. The proposed method first calculates the global covariance matrix using training data of all speakers. It then finds the eigenvalue matrix and the corresponding eigenvector matrix from the global covariance matrix. Compared to conventional PCA and Gaussian mixture model (GMM) methods, the proposed method shows better performance while requiring less storage space and complexity in speaker identification.
Object segmentation is a challenging task in image processing and computer vision. In this paper, we present a visual attention based segmentation method to segment small sized interesting objects in natural images. Different from the traditional methods, we first search the region of interest by using our novel saliency-based method, which is mainly based on band-pass filtering, to obtain the appropriate frequency. Secondly, we applied the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) to locate the object region. By incorporating the visual attention analysis into object segmentation, our proposed approach is able to narrow the search region for object segmentation, so that the accuracy is increased and the computational complexity is reduced. The experimental results indicate that our proposed approach is efficient for object segmentation in natural images, especially for small objects. Our proposed method significantly outperforms traditional GMM based segmentation.

Gait Recognition is a new technique to identify the people by the way they walk. Human gait is a spatio-temporal phenomenon that typifies the motion characteristics of an individual. The proposed method makes a simple but efficient attempt to gait recognition. For each video file, spatial silhouettes of a walker are extracted by an improved background subtraction procedure using Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM). Here GMM is used as a parametric probability density function represented as a weighted sum of Gaussian component densities. Then, the relevant features are extracted from the silhouette tracked from the given video file using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) method. The Fisher Linear Discriminant Analysis (FLDA) classifier is used in the classification of dimensional reduced image derived by the PCA method for gait recognition. Although gait images can be easily acquired, the gait recognition is affected by clothes, shoes, carrying status and specific physical condition of an individual. To overcome this problem, it is combined with footprint as a multimodal biometric system. The minutiae is extracted from the footprint and then fused with silhouette image using the Discrete Stationary Wavelet Transform (DSWT). The experimental result shows that the efficiency of proposed fusion algorithm works well and attains better result while comparing with other fusion schemes.
A problem of separating signals from noises is considered, when they are randomly mixed in the observation. It is assumed that the noise follows a Gaussian distribution and the signal follows a Gamma distribution, thus the underlying distribution of an observation will be a mixture of Gaussian and Gamma distributions. The parameters of the mixture model will be estimated from the EM algorithm. Then the signals and noises will be classified by a fixed threshold approach based on multiple testing using positive false discovery rate and Bayes error. The proposed method is applied to a real optical emission spectroscopy data for the quantitative analysis of inclusions. A simulation is carried out to compare the performance with the existing method using 3 sigma rule.

For the quantitative analysis of inclusion using OES data, separating of noise and inclusion is needed. In previous methods assuming that noises come from a normal distribution, intensity levels beyond a specific threshold are determined as inclusions. However, it is not possible to classify inclusions in low intensity region using this method, even though every inclusion is an element of some chemical compound. In this paper, we assume that distribution of OES data is a Gaussian mixture and estimate the parameters of the mixture model using EM algorithm. Then, we calculate mixing ratio of noise and inclusion using these parameters to separate noise and inclusion.
In this paper, we proposed the principal component analysis (PCA) fuzzy mixture model for speaker identification. A PCA fuzzy mixture model is derived from the combination of the PCA and the fuzzy version of mixture model with diagonal covariance matrices. In this method, the feature vectors are first transformed by each speaker's PCA transformation matrix to reduce the correlation among the elements. Then, the fuzzy mixture model for speaker is obtained from these transformed feature vectors with reduced dimensions. The orthogonal Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) can be derived as a special case of PCA fuzzy mixture model. In our experiments, with having the number of mixtures equal, the proposed method requires less training time and less storage as well as shows better speaker identification rate compared to the conventional GMM. Also, the proposed one shows equal or better identification performance than the orthogonal GMM does.

Object recognition is one of the key technologies of the monitoring system for the prevention of various intelligent crimes. The height is one of the physical information of a person, and it may be important information for identification of the person. In this paper, a method which can detect pedestrians from CCTV images and estimate the height of the detected objects, is proposed. In this method, GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) method was used to separate the moving object from the background and the pedestrian was detected using the conditions such as the width-height ratio and the size of the candidate objects. The proposed method was applied to the CCTV video, and the height of the pedestrian at far-distance, middle- distance, near-distance was estimated for the same person, and the accuracy was evaluated. Experimental results showed that the proposed method can estimate the height of the pedestrian as the accuracy of 97% for the short-range, 98% for the medium-range, and more than 97% for the far-range. The image sizes for the same pedestrian are different as the position of him in the image, it is shown that the proposed algorithm can estimate the height of pedestrian for various position effectively.
In this paper, we propose a method for detecting the number of clusters. This method can improve the performance of a gaussian mixture model function in conventional markov random field method by using the tensor voting. The key point of the proposed method is that extracts the number of the center through the continuity of saliency map of the input data of the tensor voting token. At first, we separate the foreground and background region candidate in a given natural images. After that, we extract the appropriate cluster number for each separate candidate regions by applying the tensor voting. We can make accurate modeling a gaussian mixture model by using a detected number of cluster. We can return the result of natural binary text image by calculating the unary term and the pairwise term of markov random field. After the experiment, we can confirm that the proposed method returns the optimal cluster number and text binarization results are improved.
